The best part of watching you build a home made lathe is watching you build it using a home made drill press! A true craftsman!
What I like most about this video is that you use genuine scrap wood and cut offs. So many on here say “build this (something) only using scrap wood” and then pull out immaculate cedar ply!! Well done, great video. Thank you.
Very good video. Good to see old craftsmanship being revived. In the 1930's, power tools cost almost as much as they do now and were unaffordable by many. Thus, the handyman magazines often ran articles on building your own, using various junk.

thanks! this looks great - and some extra tips and ideas there I'd not seen in other videos for drill powered lathe - like using epoxy to have a tight fitting between the threaded rod and the bearing, and making the wooden handle
I like it! First, I wanted to buy this machine, but I saw how to use drill instead. Now, I am building mine, and it will look like this one! Good size and type for amateur and hobby tool.

Вот это годное решение, я про идею фиксации вала в передней бабке, так на дрель не будут воздействовать боковые нагрузки при начальной обработке. Вполне безопасно для инструмента, я считаю.

Тут вся соль в том, что используются две абсолютно идентичные бабки со своими подшипниками, так что, по идее, можно крутить вал чем попало, - любым приводом с подходящей мощностью и числом оборотов.

I already made half of this. I use it for short pieces like tool handles and such. All i need is the other side to clamp longer pieces. Thank you for your idea.

Your entire drill stand is moving forward because you have not made any mounts under the base to stiffen it. Just as a tip ; )
You should also cut with the circle cutter slower then stay longer and do not get hot.

Unfortunately I don't have a tutorial or anything like that that I could recommend to you. The video is not bad from this point of view, you just have to improve something here and there and then you can use it. If you want to see a professional then check out Matthias Wandel :)

This is an impressive piece on how to produce something functional and useful using the most basic of resources. I thought at one point early on that he would never use either a clamp or a vice, as he relied on screw and glue, a good eye and very powerful fingers and wrists. We saw the results of previous efforts in building from scratch as he used a home-made drill press. The final example of extreme economy comes at the end when he uses a piece of wood to burn away material from the piece being turned.
The only way I can think of to get even more basic would be the use of a treadle and bow string to power the lathe !

👍That's an excellent lathe.! Well done. You could use square steel tube stock for your ways and some steel angles for the tail stock, and really make a nice permanent and accurate lathe. Going to have to try this one.👍🙂
