My parents moved from the US to the UK for almost four years between 1978-1982. The experience was so eye opening and culturally expansive for them and for me & my daughter when we visited them. I think that is why I value your utube channel. Watching you experience the UK with your “fresh” perspective is so enjoyable. Also, when you highlight the differences when you return to your home in Germany, I feel a kinship with you though the differences between the UK & USA & Germany are sometimes great, they are also similar. I can appreciate your perspective better after having lived in the UK & traveling back home. Should you ever return permanently to Germany, I would encourage you to continue your utube channel in Germany as I would be just as open & inquisitive about your perspective on Germany. I’m sure many of your current viewers would be as well. At any rate, thank you for sharing your lives with us!

The clear honesty in this account of your decision and move is refreshing. It was obvious to me that there must have been sacrifices involved, but I detected real joy in the building of your lives in the UK. Discovering this channel brought me to tears and just as importantly, to the Britain I have always longed to visit. I am 70 years young now, with some health issues, so I don’t know if I will ever be able to travel overseas. I travel in Britain with the two of you and I see the most fabulous places! I can never express what that means to me. I thank you Kirsten for persevering as you have built this channel. I remember how shy Joerg seemed initially and it is so lovely how he has blossomed-it is WONDERFUL!! Thank You both for brightening my life with each and every post. These journeys with you two brings me more joy than any words could possibly express.

Although I've lived most of my life in Canada, I've also spent extended periods in the UK and in Germany. I agree with you about the differences. German people are so well organized and efficient. It is a treat to be in a place that runs like clockwork. On the other hand, the people of the UK are very warm and friendly and they are much more relaxed and humorous about enjoying life. Both places have good qualities. Glad that you are both happy about your decision to move to the UK.

I think the fact that you lived abroad as children helped you be brave enough to leave Germany and settle in Britain as adults. So interesting to hear your stories. I knew you had lived in Egypt, but didn't realise Joerg had lived Down Under!

Thank you. That is such a lovely story, very warming to hear.
In the 1960s My father and I visited berchtesgaden, as my sister was working there. My father and I were overwhelmed by the friendly helpful people, on the streets, in the shop, biergarten, and the bed and breakfast we stayed. Such laughter we had with little language on both sides we all laughed the more. My father brought a German hat and never wore another hat for years and years. The memories will always remain as the more welcoming place I’ve ever visited in such a short time.

I can identify with this video so much. I lived in Norway twice - each time for three years - due to my husband’s job. My children were born there which was a challenge because i had no family network but you soon make friends and that really helped. The second time the opportunity came round we decided to take it again uprooting the children from their schools in the UK - believe me that was not an easy choice but I never ever regretted it. They went to an International school and made friends from all different cultures. We all have wonderful memories of this time, especially my children. My dad even conquered his fear of flying and came to stay and I’m so pleased that he experienced this beautiful country too. I would say if anyone is offered the opportunity to live abroad take it!

I just found this video today and made feel so homesick 😢. I come from a different country- Mexico 🇲🇽- to live with my English husband . I left children and grandchildren, relatives, house behind, It was like a second chance to start all over again. I don’t regret and we have thought to go back to Mexico when we retire because we rent a nice property but it’s not ours. Everything is so expensive now. However it’s a nice experience and this country is absolutely gorgeous too. God bless you !

Dear Kirsten and Joerg. Thank you for sharing your stories. My husband and I had the opportunity to live in London for 5 years and I can related to many of what you've gone through. I couldn't agree with you more that despite some inevitable downsides, It's a wonderful experience. We loved every minute living in London and took advantage of the proximity to explore many beautiful places in UK, and Europe. It is very clever and admirable of you to turn your experience into what you share with us on your UA-cam channel. Best wishes to you both in 2022 and look forward to seeing more of your adventures in UK. BTW, Kirsten, I think you have a lovely & authentic British accent, is it from your Cambridge years

I admire the way in which you came together, to weigh the pros and cons, in order to make the best decision for you as a couple. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your various tours, educational videos, and culinary adventures. I found your channel after losing my fiancé. It truly engrossed me and continues to do so as I grieve. We were both 48 when he passed, and now at 49, for what it’s worth, your content has inspired me to embark on some long-awaited adventures of my own. Even if you decide, as a couple, to return to Germany, I think you will return there more enriched and cultured having taken advantage of a once in a lifetime offer. As a history graduate with a minor in sociology, it has been a dream of mine to tour Germany, Poland, England, as well as a slew of other European countries. Needless to say, if you end up returning to Germany, I sure do hope you both continue creating such captivating content, as I am sure I am expressing the opinion of your audience majority here.😊

Happy New Year..so nice to see you both. Been a long two weeks! So glad you feel settled in our beautiful England. Also glad we get to see parts of Germany too..so beautiful there too. I moved to the US 25 years ago (to marry US hubby) thinking it would be the same as the U.K! It was a total culture shock. To be honest I have regretted the move so much and have missed my UK family and country immensely. Have had one Christmas in the U.K. in 25 years and was there about 3 years ago..I’m grateful to have met my hubby but mentally it’s been a daily struggle especially for last 16 years or so. If kids were much younger and hubby could get a job in U.K. I think we would have definitely moved back, but I keep telling myself to “bloom where I’m planted”! And to keep watching your wonderful vlogs, which truly are a blessing for so many, especially us expats. Can’t wait to travel with you in 2022. Thank you

Oh Gill, I so understand what you wrote. I left the UK in 1988 for Western Canada. My husband (now ex) is Canadian and wanted to return home. I never could have believed that I would live over 30 years in Canada and, to be honest, I have always regretted the move. I have only returned twice during this time, as well. However, my children are now grown and two out of the three are either already in the UK or moving soon. Finally, I will be returning this year. I have missed my family horribly and my heart goes out to you xox

I apologize for my english, I hope you understand the sense and found even more joy in your path because of your faith. It was good to me, and maybe for many people, to read your so honest thinkings, they bring light to our own expiriences. Thank you very much and Blessings for this new year 2022! Cheers!

    Hello Kirsten and Joerg
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love your channel! You two seem like such wonderfully kind humans. Your content is so interesting and entertaining and I thank you. I'll share just a few thoughts as I sit here reflecting on this last year.
I currently live in a small town in Ohio. I lived away, in another state for several years but I moved home as my parents were getting on in years and I wanted to be close to family again. My dear father just died on Christmas Eve and we burried him on New Years Eve on what would have been his 80th Birthday.
For me personally, I am so glad I was around these last few years and got to spend quality time with my parents. Happiness is paramount and family is everything. When I was younger I wanted to travel and live all over the world but as I'm in my fiftys now, I prefer being close to home. I still travel but home is where my heart lies. Happy New Year to you both! May it be a year filled with love, laughter and many blessings. My best, Lisa G.

So good to hear the reality of moving abroad, I am English but have lived in Australia most of my life but dream of coming to live in England for a little while. But I would miss my kids way too much and ther last couple of years would have been terrible with the pandemic, especially as Australia closed international travel until recently. We couldn't leave or come back freely.
But I do love the UK, like you say the people are so friendly and welcoming. And the countryside is beautiful.. Thank you for your lovely video, all your videos are wonderfully unique, they make me feel like I'm there too.

Only found you at the end of last year so catching up with you. I loved the video and was warmed to hear you find yourselves welcome here. My grandmother lost family in both world wars and my mother was a small child in the 2nd world war which had a profound affect on them both. Then in the 1980s we had a student exchange at school with German students. I remember my mother saying it was important to welcome them as both the English and German people suffered during the war and I was to be respectful towards them. I will never forget her words of compassion when talking about events that had happened in both countries. We have visited Germany several times and have always received a warm welcome and I’m so glad you have as well. Thank you for sharing this. X

Thank you so much! I'm so happy you had an exchange student from Germany, none of us here approve of what happened and can only make sure things like that never happen again. We once visited South Africa and went to Robben Island which had a huge impact on us because we were shown around by an amazing guy who was imprisoned at the same time as Mandela. We thought he must hate white people so much but he didn't and said forgiveness and raising awareness is so important, especially as the generations after that weren't the initiators if you know what I mean. We have to make sure to never forget the past and don't erase it so things don't happen again. Sending you so much love.xx

You are so insightful on the difference in people born in other cultures. I give it little thought until I was was able to travel outside my middle American state. My grandfather came to state of Iowa from near Howard Castle at 21 where he was a farmer worker [Whitwell on the Hill]. I do love that area, visited my relatives in 1987. Near where I grew up, a German group lived in the Amana Colonies, having come to US for religious freedom. They were Pietists, coming first to Northern New York in 1843-44, then to state of Iowa in 1855. It was one of longest-lived communal societies, which became a profit-sharing corporation in 1932. I'm 80 so the children my age still had no English until they started school and reattended their German accent. I do love your Vlog so do keep sharing your life with us.

You two are so honest and charming. I appreciate your insights. I must say, way back in 1972 I moved from Chicago in the U.S. to Paris. I thought at the time that people all over the world were just the same, just speaking different languages. How wrong I was. It took me a while to figure things out, but eventually I did realize that for all of the things we have in common, there will always be differences. Those differences are just fine. They make us who we are. I have enjoyed your insights. The main thing is to look at where we can connect with one another.

Kirsten, I think it is so sweet that you are that close to your parents and speak to them that frequently! I know that moving abroad was most difficult because of leaving your family. I applaud you both for taking the risk in moving to a new country. (I moved to Dublin, Ireland for a year, kept a flat, travelled the country and the UK, and even worked for a short duration. An incredible, life changing experience that I too, highly recommend! Everything about Ireland is truly magical.)
Thank you for reflecting on your past and present, for recognizing the changes within you and your individuality, and for being transparent. I sincerely appreciate when people are down-to-earth and willing to be honest, open and authentic. (Just like you are on UA-cam.)
Jöerg, I do agree that there is a sacrifice when moving to another country, you do leave something behind, (for me, it was my family), but having said that, yes, you do gain SO MUCH!

Hi, I have been following your videos for a while now, as I am a cottage lover. I am Mexican, and grew in a home which was decorated British in the masculine part, and French in the feminine. Both my parents (my dad passed this year due to Covid, sadly), and me, we adore cottages. My parents built one for each of my sibling and me, in a British style, which I love with all my heart, but I left Mexico and live now in Canada. What has been most difficult for me is houses! Homes here are not as beautiful as in Britain, France, Germany, Sweden, etc… Sometimes I wonder if I moved to the wrong country… but then I see nature here, and people, and know I am where I wanted to be. Take care!

On a serious note, this is a great video with a lot of practical considerations for anyone thinking about moving abroad. Happy New Year to you both! What an adventure and glad you took the opportunity to live outside of your home country! I grew up in a family who travelled a lot (my father was in the US Air Force) and had lived mostly in Europe (the UK, Germany, and Italy). I'm so grateful to have had the chance to live in other countries and still feel like a nomad. I totally understand when you say 'it's in our blood!' When my husband and I had a chance to live abroad, we jumped at the chance, living overseas for almost 10 years. We had complete reverse culture shock upon returning to the US. Now it is 8 years later, and we're starting to get 'itchy' feet again. We'd love another opportunity to travel, but have older parents now and it has changed our priorities. I encourage everyone to get out of their comfort zone at least once in their lives, you never know what wonderful memories you will make and experience!

Wonderful honest sharing. I relocated from Australia to Canada for 16 years and returned back to Aus with husband and son late 2020, right in the middle of Covid. It was difficult, especially trying to buy back into the SE Queensland property market. Finally we are starting to feel more and more settled, and we think it’s healthy to have good conversations about what we miss. In general, we feel we made the best decision for our unique family, but international relocation is not for everyone. 😊♥️

I was thinking about you both today and missing your videos and here you are. It is so good to know you were welcomed to our country. I think your success (aside from hard work) is your warmth and genuine kindness. People really like you both. On top of that it is interesting to see your journey and the house development is my favourite. Happy New Year 🎉

You two have a great attitude. I admire your ambition and energy. So true, you have to at least step out, or stagnate. You were lucky in your move, to have a job waiting, that makes a difference in such a big move. I enjoyed hearing your views, and look forward to seeing what you do next. Take care from Central Michigan 😊

Kirsten & Joerg - I have moved many many times in my life and no matter where I moved or for what reason I rarely regretted it because each new place brings its own joys and trials. Just know that if you decide to keep making videos, no matter when you move, or where, I will be happy to be an audience to your travels! Blessings to both of you in 2022!!!💌🎉🎊⛄

Kirsten and Joerg, Happy and a healthy New Year to you both🍾🥂....I’ve lived abroad before and loved it, if the opportunity ever comes by again I would embrace it. You learn and grow so much when you are in a different country and culture. Love you guys 😘 Love your bar cart in the back ground.

Very wise Words... You need to release something, to gain more or something better... Your chat together reminds me to my own movement to UK Eastriding of Yorkshire in 2013-2017 and sometimes I miss the very friendly Chats with the strangers there. Yes, I came back to Germany, but the time in UK has been very important for me through I had experienced 4 Movements in 4 Years and had also learned the difference between these 2 countries in many form. But I recommend to go abroad for a living, to learn and evolve and it doesn't matter, if you come back or not. I got a new perspective on my own country after living there and not only took holidays in UK. I would do it again, if I had a chance...🌍💕👌
