- I often get ideas sent to me by viewers and I appreciate all of them. Sometimes I like one so much that I attempt building it. This blank was suggested by a viewer and was truly a fun blank to make. Thank you and keep the ideas coming.

Bob

+Eric Milligan Thank you Eric.

Glue the pen blank to the waste block with a couple of small drops of super glue. Drill it then cut it free on the band saw. I use this method for dowels etc. and it works well. Good video.
+Tom W Great tip Tom,
Thank you.
Regards,
Bob
great work as usual Bob
Thank you Joe.
Regards,
Bob
I really like that idea. I'm sure with a little trial and error you can figure out where to put the pencils for the best effect. You should cut a grove in your waste block the with of your blank that will keep it from turning. Maybe make some different angle blocks 30° 60°?
+Barry Fields Thank you Barry,
Great idea on the groove. I have some ideas for where to take this idea next.
Regards,
Bob
Excellent, Bob. I will give this a try. Off to Walmart for some coloured pencils.
Look for the hexagon shaped ones. Round will work but there will be a lot of voids.
Regards,
Bob
You could try hot gluing the blank to the angled piece of wood and cutting it off after drilling. It wouldn't affect the finished pen since you are turning all of the glue residue off anyway.
+Aaron Johnson Nice idea,
I use hot glue all the time in the shop, it never occurred to me to use it for this application.
Regards,
Bob
I have tried angling pencils before but nothing like that! I have always avoided crossing holes but that looks awesome, brilliant effect, great job
+Locks and Keys Thank you, I was skeptical at first but it seemed to work. I have an idea for a design using this technique. I hope to try it soon.
Regards,
Bob
Nice i like it .
+Ahron Africanmeat Thank you Ahron.

Bob
Nicely done, Bob. Maple blanks and gun metal finish kits are one of my very favorite color combinations.
+Dwight Rahl Thank you Dwight,
I'm a huge fan of the GM blanks too.

Bob
I've been watching your videos for a while. Thank you, you have helped me along the way. Fun and useful, the perfect videos.
+Meg Arceneaux Thank you very much Meg, I appreciate your comment. I'm always happy to help.

Nice one Bob . The holes on and angle gives it a cool affect . Take care .
+Glen mckelvey Thank you Glen,
I have a few other idea how to go about this.
Regards,
Bob
nice job. I'm new to turning and you have my brain full of pen ideas. Thanks for the videos.
also, try to use wood working drill bits weather they're the pointed variety, or screw point auger. you get better entry and usually don't burn the wood if using low speed. I am guilty of using jobber style metal drill bits because they're cheaper and convenient.

+Ron Parrott Thank you for the information, I'm guilty of grabbing what ever's at hand at the given moment.

Great job Bob. You always make me think about how to do these. I will do one except I am going to use purple heart blank.
Again great job
+Spencer Brown That should be a beautiful blank.
Regards,
Bob
Great work Bob, Had I known you were turning one on the angle, I could of saved you some grief. I had all the same problems you did. On the angle jig. I did the same thing. I did take it one step further. I glued small pieces of wood on the outside perimeter of the jig and made one piece on the left and right side and one on the bottom, leaving the top open to slide the blank in. I set so a 3/4 blank just fits in and doesn't move. If I remember I cut the jig to a 30 degree angle. I can get more pencils in that way. Just throwin out ideas. Oh and CA holds the side pieces to the jig just fine.
+Dave White This one came about really fast. I usually mention them on the update channel. I wish I had because I would have liked getting some input from you.
Regards,
Bob
Looks really great. I bet it would be even lovelier if you used a dark wood as it would contrast well with the light wood of the pencils
+tracy heaton Nice idea, maybe on the next one. I have a few other ideas for this application.
Regards,
Bob
nice pen
Thank you Shane.
Really like this pen Ill give it a try. I think Ill try a linseed oil and a thin CA for a finnish. Thanks for the turn. :)
+Tim V. Thank you Tim,
I haven't tried BLO yet.
Regards,
Bob
RJBWoodTurner just tried it with blood wife has already sent it to her sister now I have to make another one....... ☺
Opps that's boiled linseed oil
+Tim V. That happens to me from time to time. The pens go out as gifts as fast as you can make them.
Regards,
Bob
+Tim V. I haven't tried BLO before C/A. What are the advantages? I may want to try it.
Regards,
Bob
good job, but if you use a pilot drill you will eliminate drill walk when drilling at an angle
+ian duff I tried to purchase one at Woodcraft yesterday but they don't sell them. eBay here I come.
Regards,
Bob
Next time you might consider using epoxy to glue the pencils into the pen blank.
+Michael Trent Thank you Michael.
Regards,
Bob
Hi Bob, have you tried using just the coloured pencil leads without the wood of the pencil. I've ordered some and going to give it a try. Love your work, best wishes from Lincolnshire England.
Hello Simon,
That’s really a cool idea. Please let me know how it turns out.
Regards,
Bob
....forgot to add. The pen is getting a lot of positive comments at work. Cheers
+Tommie Strydom That's great! I'm glad people are enjoying it.
Regards,
Bob
Hi Bob, awesome pen looks great, I think the drilling at the angles was an excellent idea. Btw any news on that software program?
+Peter H. Koller Thank you Peter,
That project has stalled for the time being.
Regards,
Bob
Hey Bob, another awesome video. Well, just thinking outside the box did you ever consider making an octagon pen? Or half octagon and the other half round. Might look cool.
+Denny Skerb interesting idea, I've never even heard of an octagon pen. I need to see if I can get my mind around that idea.
Regards,
Bob
nice looking. have you tried the juniper that i sent you yet. be nice to see what you get grain wise. plus it show that even bush wood can be used. the juniper is the flat blanks that i mistakenly wrote cedar on.
+John Lacourse I need to search the shop, I used a bunch of Cedar and hope I didn't use it as Cedar. I've been traveling so when I return, I'll search for it.
Regards,
Bob
hey look for the wood . It was 3in wide about13 inch long 1inch thick. came in the box with the blackwalnut block and bunch other blocks. good luck.
john
+John Lacourse John,
I found it! Its on my bench and I have some pen kits so I plan on giving it a spin very soon. Thank you for reminding me and getting it back in front of me. I sometimes get side tracked easily and let things go to long.
Regards,
Bob
Cool pen. I wonder if the material the colored pencils lead is made from would cause issues with the CA glue over time?
+Tarry Frey Interesting question Tarry,
I'm not really sure about that.
Regards,
Bob
Have you considered using different colors of wooden dowels instead of colored pencils?
+Ashley Reese Hello Ashley,
I did one a while back with a maple blank and Walnut dowels. I didn't think at the time to vary the dowel woods but I do
Like the idea.
Regards,
Bob
Interesting! Guess that a lot of thinking has to go into doing this project. A strange question: A plummer friend gave me some left over Corian countertop scrap pcs. problem is it is 10mm thick. Not really thick enough except for a slim pen kit. Should I glue 4 pcs. together or just make a 10 cent pen like I have seen on UA-cam? Ron toydoctor
I’d glue it up. You’ll get a more interesting blank and can use any kit you like.
Regards,
Bob
Thanks for the reply! I enjoy watching your videos and look forward to your next one. I saw the video of the pen tip, center ring and end. Very well thought out. Ron Toydoctor
Thanks Bob. Will catch you on instagram.
Thank you Ron.
