    In Australia Corian is a DuPont product made of a polymer with “stones” or stone chips embedded in the polymer and is mainly used for bench or counter tops. Is this the same material you guys in the U.S. use? It certainly looks identical. I’m a bit worried the stone chips, if they are actually stone, will damage my chisels.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  3 роки тому

      It sounds like it’s the same. I’d try I’d and see what it does to the tools. The corian I use dulls them quickly but does not damage them.

      Bob

    I don't think the transition from nib to blank is quite right. It just needs a little more work to be flush and your centre core was also off if you note but 5/10 for effort.

  • @DavidWhite
    @DavidWhite 7 років тому +1

    Great idea Bob. I see you now have a set of blank jaws and drill chuck for the lathe. I get a lot better blank holes dead center, on both ends. A couple of tips, Don't but the blank all the way against the inside of the chuck. For some reason the blank will end up not being square. Get a set of centering bits www.amazon.com/Anytime-Tools-CENTER-COUNTERSINK-Tooling/dp/B000N216SU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1487682440&sr=8-1&keywords=lathe+centering+bits These will stop the drill bit wobble. I have been drilling a smaller hole in the blank first and then go to the required size. It seems to relieve the pressure on the inside of the blank as it gives the waste material someplace to go.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  7 років тому +1

      +Dave White Thank you for the info Dave,
      I tried drilling on the lathe but there's so much slop in my Harbor Freight tail stock that I can't get a round hole. That's another reason I held the Jacobs Chuck. I want to get a nicer lathe.

      Bob

  • @marcycooper6930

    I think you should make the bodies out of corian and keep the metal cap, band and nib. you could do some real nice holy pens and music pens (with thier imperfections) corian will adjust with heat.
    I knew it was going to blow when it started to "sing" and you had me gritting my teeth all the way through the cap piece.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  7 років тому +1

      +Marcy Cooper LOL,
      I hope I didn't cause you to much stress. I have plenty of Corian now so I could see me making a pen just from it. The problem for me is plenty of ideas and no time.
      Regards,
      Bob

    • @marcycooper6930

      RJBWoodTurner I can understand that. just remember heat can whorp or blow out carian.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  7 років тому

      +Marcy Cooper I think that's exactly what happened. I think the bit was packed with dust and the excess heat and pressure from that made it blow.

    Looks like when your turning it, its off center. Or turning as an oval. Around 16.32 after it breaks off, you show the end the the tip comes through it looks like its not centered correctly.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  7 років тому

      +Private Man I noticed that while editing the video. The nib and cap are centered. The Corian was more of a rectangular shape so it was a bit like off center turning and I think my phone exaggerated the movement. I also saw it when the drill bit was spinning after hot gluing it into the chuck. The yellow tint on the bit is only on half the bit and it gave a wobble effect. It kind of gave me a headache while watching it on video.

      Just for the precision aspect yes...but for the material type its not necessary. I just got a metal working lathe a couple months ago, man can you get very precise if you want with that thing...just made my first aluminum pen and it turned out great, didn't do any sanding or finishing of any sort just left it as it came off the lathe...it turned out great...I do have an assortment of emery cloth now for future pens, but not sure what if any finish a person should use on metal pens.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  5 років тому

      It’s been quite a while since I made this project so I really don’t remember. It is a very hard material so if I had to guess, I’d bet it dulled them quickly and I had to touch them up while turning.

    Do you think a pencil sharpener will cut this stuff?

    • @Neffers_UK
      @Neffers_UK 7 років тому +1

      "This stuff" is an acrylic polymer with Alumina Tryhydrate (ATH) as a filler. Corians' common use is for kitchen worktops etc., but having a large lump of what is essentially plastic in a place where fires are common place isn't a great idea.
      This is where the ATH comes in, as it acts as a flame retardant and smoke suppressor. Another noteworthy thing is that ATH is also used as a white pigment, you can replace about a quarter of Titanium Dioxide (the stuff that makes white paint white) with ATH, hence the more pastel shades in Bob's samples.
      TL:DR, it's another acrylic to the layman and behaves pretty much like an acrylic blank would. I hope this was informative in some way :)

    I love your videos but I've gotta call you out on 2 techniques. Once you cut off the blank you should face it off perpendicular. And then I almost screamed when I saw you hold your drill&chuck in your hand to "find the center". It wobbled like a go-go dancer (a term that won't be understood by the youth). While I have $50 KEO center drills in my lil machine shop, HF has a set for $7. Those held in the chuck in the tail stock will insure that your starter hole is centered. The result was your holes were not centered.

      Thank you Steve,
      Since I made that pen, I have replaced the lathe, purchased a new Jacobs Chuck that is much more secure in the tail stock and I just purchased a set of center bits for my bespoke turning. I agree that there was a lot wrong but hopefully I’m on the way to correcting it.
      Regards,
      Bob

    Must be an error there somewhere as 3/16 is bigger than 1/8

      Very possible, I try to be as accurate as possible but we all make mistakes.

      +Cliff Hartle Hello Cliff,
      3/32. Did slip up and say 3/16 in the video?

      RJBWoodTurner I was watching on my phone so I couldn't easily rewind but then you said it for the third time. :)
      It was a little "painful" watching you make the nib. I've made one pen similar but it was a pool cue pen where the "nib" was one piece going from the center band to the point.
      I think you would be better off turning it with the point at the tailstock. When I did my pen I left a little bit at the end that road in the live center until the very end. I wish I would have documented making it it but I was in a rush since it was a entry in a contest at the IAP.

      +Cliff Hartle Turning it the other direction would have probably been easier. I was kind of figuring it out as I went. The next one I'll try in that orientation.
      Regards,
      Bob

      RJBWoodTurner I have a few thoughts. I'll be back.

      Ok I've been thinking and you pretty much do it the same way but make the part that extends into the tube longer by 3/8ths or so. Turn the way you did but when you turn it around use something like a jam/glue chuck by drilling a 1/4" hole in a scrap block and gluing the nib into it.
