With the rebirth of Emperor Palpatine, following his death on the second Death Star, Imperial Forces retreated to the Deep Core, where they - together - struck out against the New Republic. This military operation, known as Operation Shadow Hand, would see the Dark Empire use not only consolidated Imperial assets, but new deadly tools of war, including the Galaxy Gun, the Eclipse Super Star Destroyer, and the Sovereign.

The Galaxy Gun and World Devastators are still my favorite EU superweapons. Though I do call Bull on the World Devastators being “more lethal than the Death Star" but they were a Hell of a lot more practical.
Lord Frostwind I mean if you could mass produce them or if they kept replicating themselves technically they would be far more lethal than any death star. Hell, Starkiller Base was a galaxy ranged planet bursting turbolaser shotgun but it had a major flaw besides the ventral oscillator. It had to EAT A WHOLE STAR BEFORE FIRING ! 😒

This is like the 10th time that I thought I was aware of every type of Star Destroyer, only to be introduced to yet another one of these damn things. It’s quite amazing actually.
Yesterday I had to go to the doctor, but since the check up was hours away I decided to waste time in the shopping center, loitering around there, a book fair caught my eye and I decided to check it out and there in the 15 ($5) buck desk was "Lost Stars" the las volume on the desk. My heart skipped a beat and I grabbed that book with all my might. Best find ever.

also if I’ll say this about the sovereign it’s basically eclipse light but it seemed slightly easier to mass produce at least as a fleet command ship I’m saying this cause I know there will be people asking why not just make an armada of eclipses

Based on how the force worked in the original trilogy, I think Palpatine would've spread his super-weapons throughout the galaxy and created a propaganda network to spread his message of fear to every soul on every planet. Fear of planet-cracking superlasers, of world ending galaxy guns, and of the military-industrial complex made manifest in the world devastators would've made terror a part of day to day life in the star wars galaxy, and Palpatine would be able to directly sense and control entire worlds through their collective hopelessness.

So, Sidious just feed the dark side within the population of the galaxy to directly control entire worlds or even the entire galaxy.
He creates the mass fear, keeps it going over the long term and feeds on it. That is what I was thinking too after I saw this video.
Fear is one of the aspects of the dark side, it make a lot of sense why he create tons of super weapons and why there are like the conduits of the dark side, considering it intensify the fear of the people living in the galaxy, so Sidious can feed the intense fear within each every individual to become more powerful.

Great video, though it looks like the Sovereign may never have been completed by the time of Byss's construction based on the Sourcebook and the other sister ships were just plans. I would assume they were never fielded since the Essential Guide to Warfare notes that Pellaeon took a full inventory of everything still in the Deep Core. As far as the super weapons, there is speculation that the Eclipse was designed in accordance with Sith metaphysical specs (the Dark Empire fan novelization goes in this direction) and failing that Palpatine could have been planning to use them against the Yuuzhan Vong.

The Sovereign classes probably would serve as fleet flagships (The roll Executor classes serve), but with more utility.
The mini-super lasers could not only obliterate objects ON a planet (subjugating a rebellious world with one or two shots, in a couple hours? Awesome.) but would be able to also Target, and equally obliterate, enemy ships, too.
So you have a fleet flagships that is taking out the larger capital starships of the Rebel fleet that ambushed you, and is then capable of turning the capital city of the nearby world into a smoking crater.
Two birds, with one stone. Two birds, with one super laser? Whatever.
When I play mods for Star Wars: Empire ant War, I always make the Sovereign my role play flagship. It is the perfect blend of Eclipse and Executor in a menacing frame, I just love it to bits.

Hey Eck, my main proposition for a future video is more of an idea for a new series; but before we talk about that i wanted to ask you a lore/science based question. I know there are ion cannons in the star wars universe but my limited knowledge an I have never heard of or know if its even possible to ionize a turbo laser shot. I on occasion like to design capital ships and some of my designs have a axial super heavy turbo laser. I was wondering if its grounded in the star wars universe to ionize the axial turbo laser shot either before or after it leaves the barrel. I'm having a lot of fun making these ship and your videos help me find weaknesses and balance in my ships. I really don't want to design anymore around a axial ionized turbo laser if it isn't even possible. Please let me know in the comments if you have heard of anything like that or if you believe it would be possible in the star wars universe.
My idea for a new video would revolve around large battles conveyed beautifully with your majestic voice and amazing story telling abilities. The series would consist of an iconic "supercapital" ship like the eclipse or the executor with a small escort fleet battling it out to the death with a second fleet with a make up strong enough to give it a run for its money. The fleet make up and size would be completely up to you; whatever you feel stands a chance against the super's. I think this could work with your current series, star ship verses, or as somewhat of a stand alone. Super Capital ships are one of my favorite aspects of the star wars universe and a combination of your knowledge, enthusiasm, voice, and story telling capabilities would make for an amazing few videos. That said, everything I've watched that you've made so far I've loved; keep up the amazing work!
P.S. I loved both episodes of the "after Endor" series and would love to see them return. You are an amazing story teller!

The many things i love about the Sovereign-class SSD's. Is just the perfect size for any Captain's or Admirals flagship. Sure, it suffers some flaws but with little advancements & stronger weapons and shields. I truly believe they have potential for any operation or having a personal fleet of these ships. My Sovereign-class SSD Flagship for it will be named "The Lucario" based on my favorite Pokemon. ^^

Emperor Palpatine vs Count Dooku, General Grevious, Ventress, and Savage Opress
Personally I think it looked better than the Eclipse, and I was a big fan of that for a long time. I would go for a Soverign II design I had in mind, stretch it to 20km, bump the gravity wells to 10, up the heavy turbo lasers to 1000, same for Ion cannons and have banks of turbolaser and laser cannons to take on smaller and faster ships if need be especially along anything looking like a trench, Add in clusters of launch tubes to fire a varity of load outs from space to space to space to surface where needed.
Revamp the hyppermatter generators to increase power redundancy and look into alternate power systems, perhaps a hyperspace vacuum tap, like Zero Point Energy. Decentralise the central command systems and move central control to multiple sub nodes leaving the "bridge" on the top as Over command so that a one hit wonder wouldnt cripple the command systems,
The axial super laser could still be a single beam for "standard use" but with three sub super laser emitters on top of the main, down the port starboard and dorsal trenches so that using the power redundancy you could fire a blast up to half the strength of the death star, overkill perhaps, but enough to crack a planet in half to account for any shielding advances or overload an singularity based defeses like the Vhong, It would also give secondary emitters if the main was damaged,
I would up the squadrons on the ship as well, having rapid deployment Tie-D's or a range of figters to cover ship defence and air suppiriority if it were used for blockade, I would drop the quantity over quality approch and either get Defenders, Silencer variants, X-wings, B-wings etc what ever gave the best tactical advantage. I would also include at lease three but up to 5 Raider class corvettes specially mounted on the dorsal in individual launch bays for that size of ship, to allow for again space superiority. Yes a fleet can be formed with this ship at it's core, but if need be this ship can support itself and look after it's own forces if support is drawn off, or not immediate.
Finally shielding, I would look over it from a lauers protection system, keep the big ol domes on the "bridge" to act as decoys but have multiple generators throughout the ship. Have then supporting it's neighbours so that energy is dissipated rapidly amongs clusters, maybe even directing some of that energy into power reserves so that attacks strengthened them, and tie the gravity wells into the shield grid as well, so that it creates a funneling system so that even if it's a small change it could bend the bolts incomming to shield clusters in that area that can handle it better, also to channel any projectiles away, effectivly making it like teflon, would take a lot to stick.
Staffing would be done with a lot of droid and automated system support. Have autamted damage control squads designed to repair or replace damaged systems, automated fabrication and recycling, Droid and system supported command and control. Have a redundant computer core that was hard seperated from the others, but could be brought up if need be to supliment or replacethe others.
A lot of this would be about fixing or minimising flaws from earlyer models. Sure it can ram a captal ship or a station and survive, but lets not get it to that point.

@EckhartsLadder Thanks for your insights. You always put out quality product!! As far as super star destroyers, especially the class and specs you lay out in this video, I’m going analyze them using the most basic of military doctrine starting in 20th Century and continuing until today, as well as specific Naval warfare strategies as the are still the relevant analogue for Star Wars outer space warfare. Before that, I have to say on glaringly ridiculous part of the Star Wars Naval engagements. That is there is no up or down, and they obviously should be using X, Y and Z axis system. Each Star system has a general plain of the distribution of planets. But unless you need the Sun, or are fighting in orbit over a planet, and of course their is a galactic plain, very few star systems or errant planetoids, asteroids align with it. Ships, of ALL clashes, should be coming at each other coming from dozens, if not hundreds of vectors. Ok that’s my biggest beef, ahhhh, breathing better now. Ok, as far as the Dark Empire and the newly bodied Emperor doctrine of building these 2 large classes a the standard, it is simply a terrible strategy. Again going back to the most basic of Military doctrine, that a Pleb at one of the academies completing their Pleb Year would basic aspects of this in mind, with specifics really pushed in 3rd year. Naval Cadets would be graduating to see the whole board. The biggest problems with relying on 2 classes of ships, especially of this scale, is that they are relatively slow, cumbersome, unwieldy, difficult to maneuver, expensive to the detriment of other projects, as you said, aside from their super laser, not that well armed, and coming out of one shipyard. One shipyard, even with decent defensives leaves the Dark Empire in a precarious position. Should the New Republic pinpoint the shipyard, using right infiltration to gather quick intel, a hard and fast, multi-vectored attack with capital ships to keep gunners occupied, covering bombers and hundreds of fighters coming out from hyperspace, again, from multiple vectors. Close in attacks to make their targeting computers less reliable. All of this being a distraction for 2-3 old, but loaded with most energetic explosives available, slaved to a small cruise or gunship. Their entire mission is to crash those outdated, but loaded capital ships, 1 into the orbital ring, though 3 smaller cruisers would probably be more effective and the other explosive laden ships targeting, at maximum velocity, or if new the hyperspace move from “The Last Jedi” into the largest planetary shipyards. Next, as I said before, while the super laser is a weapon no one should take likely, and gravity well generators formidable as well, a proper ambush could negate those 2 major advantages at very start of the ambush. It would be likely the command center would be monitoring hyperspace. First wave, send 7 ships, 6 slaved, and say 50 fighters to make their attack more realistic. The slaved ships would be ladened with the highest yield explosives possible, or if they knew it, use the hyperspace move. But the main purposeful this attack is to use the gravity well generators against them. When the New Republic’s small fleet is pulled out of space, approaching the ship from behind, the slaves ships would split so they could hit the underside of both gravity well generators. As these ships approach, they would be maneuvered in such a way as to seem out of control, being drawn into the gravity well generators. They impact the gravity well generators, taking them out of commission. Since these generator are at the aft of the ship, if the explosions are large enough, you could take out main propulsion and hopefully some power generators. Now you have a listing behemoth to take apart with various types attacks. The next attack of this design would either have to simultaneous or in sectors very far apart. There are probably 25 other strategies I could come up with given a few days and blinding you by reading. The best real world analogues are: 1.the Germans in WWII based their Naval doctrine on Pocket Battleships and huge, nearly indestructible battleships, with mostly oilers, resupply ships, a few destroyers and corvettes and at first a relatively small submarine fleet. Well the Pocket Battle Ships were tough and could put out some serious pain, there only 2. After breaking havoc for a few months, one was scuttled by its captain when the port at Montevideo, Uruguay, which had taken in the ship initially, but reconsidered a few days latter. Having received false reports about incoming British Fleet incoming. The other was killed at sea. After the Bismarck Battleship blew up GB’s most hallowed cruiser, the got pissed and a large fleet to find it and kill it. It took a few days to find them and the game was afoot. It took 6 days of constant bombardment to finally sink the Bismarck, by then it took several British ships with it. The Japanese, though the loved their carriers, never had a military strategy entirely based on aircraft carriers, but rather, huge battleships, the biggest ever built. The U.S. navy sank them all, fairly quickly. And after Midway, most of the Japanese Carriers were also gone. The ships that destroyed the majority of Japanese Capital ships we U.S. Destroyers, Submarines and air power from carries. There was only one battleship on battleship encounter. The inevitable weakness of basing you Naval strategy on big ships is, the bigger they are, the harder they fall, and the sooner they targeted. The U..S. Navy has 310 ships with over 2 dozen classes of ships. Yes we has super Carriers, 19 to exact, they are for force projection. Most of ship to ship or ship to shore Naval Doctrine falls on smaller, more flexible ships.
