  • New Ash Green, Kent.
Succession of shots of rural England. Lovely trees in bloom, country cottages... Greater public demand for return to village life has inspired a group of builders and architects to build a new village which corresponds to demands of contemporary life without disturbing rural balance. If it proves successful, the scheme could be applied elsewhere in Britain - voiceover concludes.
Men are seen discussing a model of a new village spread in front of them. Several H/A shots of the model. Cut to location of the new village near Hartly in Kent. New village is called New Ash Green and it is located within easy commuting range of London.
Succession of shots showing different stages of creating the new village. People building, painting, decorating and finally planting grass plants and trees to blend with the environment.
Various shots of the finished village. Houses, gardens, pedestrian paths... Various shots of the interior of the houses showing spacious rooms filled with modern furniture, modern kitchen etc.

I grew up in New Ash Green in the 90’s and early 2000’s, moving away in 2005. I have many fond memories of this village! The houses seem to have been built very well and it’s a beautiful place to walk around and explore. Although there is little to do for teenagers in the village (outside of a leisure centre and sports clubs), I think the mentality of the people who live in NAG is a positive and community driven one. It feels very much like a village when you visit the shops as you’re likely to bump into somebody you know. New Ash Green has needed a lot of love and care for a long time already, but I know the Village Association have tried to ensure that the population feel safe and cared for. As I mentioned, I would just love to see more safe activities for teenagers… perhaps expand the leisure centre and create excitement for shop owners to come and trade within the shopping centre. I remember back in the 90s, there were few vacant shop units and the weekend market was always very popular. It’s definitely changed over the years but my hope is that the village can once again thrive as it did in the 60s/70s and 80s.

The builder got into financial difficulties and sold the site to Bovis homes in 1971 and it grow and grow in size, not so much of a village but a town….
