- [*Note: the below information was accurate at the time of upload, but the southern hemisphere now has an escalator that is 5m longer than this one, at the new Perth Airport station which opened in October 2022.] Melbourne's Parliament railway station has the claim to fame of allegedly the longest escalators in the southern hemisphere. Accurate data is a bit hard to come by, but general consensus is that they are 30m long and take 1 minute 25 seconds to travel end to end - that's if you're one of those weird people who stand still of course. There are actually 7 escalators of the same length at the station: four from the southern concourse down to platforms 1 and 2, and three from the northern concourse. There is no public connection between the two ends at concourse level, but I'm fairly certain they are level with each other. More (much shorter) escalators run from platforms 1 & 2 down to 3 & 4. The long escalators are known to cause disorientation due to the lack of vertical reference points, especially when travelling up. I am someone who has good balance and a good head for heights, and I still get a bit of a head spin using them. You can read about the phenomenon here: www.abc.net.au...
Parliament will lose this distinction when Perth's new airport railway station opens, which apparently features some escalators 5m longer than these ones. This video was filmed on two separate days in early February 2021.

God I hate those escalators, they've always terrified me. You don't know if you're going up or down on them.
I love the little snippets of out of context conversations lol
By 9th of October 2022, Airport Central station in Perth holds the crown for having the longest escalator in the southern hemisphere
I've been waiting for this comment haha. I will update the info here when I get a chance.
Sydney's Central Station will be home to the largest escalator in the southern hemisphere. The 45-metre escalators are expected to be operational in 2024.
That escalator messes with my mind.
I have a fear of escalators, i also had to commute here twice a week for a few months, (thank god lifts exsist) every now and again, i’d go and look at the escalators and go ‘haha NOPE’ and also get slightly confused that people would just casually run down them?? excuse me??
Mad lad -walking- _running_ down the escalator instead of staying still
I have read an engineering paper from the sixties where the main focus for constructing the Melbourne underground was as a shelter from nuclear attack.
May have been a plus for the depth of Parliament station and the closeness to Parliament house.
Do not recall if they spelled out who would be given priority in case of attack.
Not widely circulated or reported, if at all.
Seems consistent with how poorly the loop was planned to serve the public.
Even forty years after opening they are still changing aspects to try to overcome it's short comings..

My elderly Aunt avoided Parliament station due to the disorientation effect of the escalators.
I think the amount of falls causing injuries eventually caused concern to the powers that be.
Resultant advice was to either not run or remain stationary travelling on them in an attempt to address the issue.

The suits seem determined to continually implement 'solutions' to this problem while making sure they never solve it. Near the top try putting horizontal strips on the side walls of the up escalators with a fat different color one indicating ground level. Of course first try it with removable tape. Also the front edge of each tread (step) should be painted. To help with the shuffle we often do at the end.
Just hold the handrail 😐😐

I nearly died on this escalator and I have no desire to go back fucking hell
After watching this, my anxiety has anxiety. 😳
I used this the other day and it was freaky
I use this a lot.
As usual, about to be outdone by Sydney - escalators to new Metro (a real metro) platforms in Central station
I don't really think having long escalators is a good thing, especially with all the safety issues.
@@onethreefivesix7254 Long escalators aren't exactly desirable. I suppose the Metro tunnels have to be deep to avoid all the other underground infrastructure in Sydney, and get deep enough down for Barangaroo Station and the Metro Harbour Tunnel, without being to steep. You could always get the lift, and I'm sure there are stairs. We will see if they are problematic, hopefully not too many people falling over.

The 45m escalators are just two of 42 new escalators currently being built underground in Central Station.
