I was so engrossed in the story I literally forgot we never _actually_ saw the house. I just assumed what I imagined was there.
Im A Commenter I’m not gonna lie this is exactly why the brain is insanely intuitive because the brain can sort of trick itself to believe something IT made up
Cameron Lewis yeah, it’s insane. Like, when jack describes his idea of the house (I think that happens here, been a while since I’ve seen it) it just sounded wrong because I had been so convinced of what it looked like. And it’s obviously not just this either. One of the craziest things for me regarding this is me having clearly false memories of things that happened when I wasn’t there because I’ve heard the stories so many times. Makes me wonder how much of what I remember in general is correct.

theory: both runs are very much real. the difference is that in the first run, the player is visiting the family home when it was still well-maintained and taken care of. it was also a place where he had nothing but fun and good memories. however, on that same visit (or perhaps afterwards), an accident occurred which resulted into the sisters death. the players parents are in a state of shock and grief and they immediately blame him for his sisters death. this tears the player apart, between him mourning for his sister and his parents accusations, he loses it and commits suicide. years pass and the players soul remains in unrest inside the neglected house. i dont really understand this part myself but from what i can see his consciousness was divided into 2 parts: pre-incident and post-incident. pre-incident player is the one using the computer while post-incident player is re-exploring the house and seeing it in its present state. somewhere in their subconscious they are both aware of each other but are constantly avoiding confronting each other, especially pre-incident. post-incident is growing sick of this and wants to leave but as long as pre-incident doesnt confront the situation he cant. finally, post-incident confronts pre-incident, forces him to say that its his fault, so they can finally lay to rest.

This game is very interesting because, like you said, I was picturing the house and a lot of what I was picturing was like a worn down version of my house which I think added to the creepiness of it all. Great game.

I’ll admit, I was watching this at midnight with all of the lights off (except for my TV because that’s what I was watching the video on). I leaned back, but I completely forgot that there was a wall behind me and it scared the crap out of me.

Volvo Gaben they're different types of games. Text based adventures require a lot of imagination from the player, 3d games don't, but they have great environments to make up for it.

Yeah I prefer watching Jack's versions of games over other people. Its not that the other guys aren't as good, but Jack gives it everything. He has the absolute best personality I have seen from a YTuber EVER. He could punch puppies in the street and I would still be subscribed to him and watch every video. Not that he would EVER do that because he has such the sweetest personality. Isn't that ironic being that he is a louder person? This is actually one of the scariest games Jack has played bc it wasn’t based off of jump scares.. it was actual horror and you had to use your own imagination of how everything looked felt. I got CHILLS man... great game!
I know this is years later, but thanks for including an epilepsy warning. Flashing lights take me by surprise a lot when watching videos because there is no warning, so thanks for adding that.
We haven’t seen the rest of this yet but I honestly think this is one of the best indie games I’ve ever watched Jack play. So compelling.

"It's exactly stranger things!" This game came out before stranger things, when it was just the house abandon, so if anything "stranger things is exactly this"
The original version of The House Abandon didn't have the Stranger Things-esque intro (it just goes right to the bedroom), but it DID have the 80s-style music in-game, so maybe a little of both? NoCode probably saw what Stranger Things became and decided to play off of it. It really works well.
I love this. This is what horror should be. Don't force us to see it only one way, let us create the image ourselves. Every mind is different, therefore ensuring a 100% unique experience. That's what would scare us most. I want to make games like this. Its so deep and captivating and I love it.

It was a good kind of scared-like dark and stormy night scared. You feel as wild and wicked as the wind screaming past the windows...

Here’s a theory: Maybe the second time you were playing through the game, after the really strange reset thingy, this was an actual family member, or someone who had actually lived in the house. They could see the house for what it really was, dilapidated and destroyed, and filled with awful memories. Perhaps the first time, before the reset, you were really playing as a homeless (or maybe someone who had no links with their own family) psychopath, who’d been stalking the family that lived within the house for years. The house is described as having good memories in it, right? This insane person may have seen the awful memories as pleasant ones, instead. If he’d been watching this family, and collecting the memories, maybe in his state of delusion, in his eyes, they would‘ve mixed in with his own reality. The house is in ruins, so something awful must have happened, right? Rather than something good?
So it seems as though through the second play through, the person hadn’t been there in a long time (though this could also be said for the first, if you viewed it using your own theories and perspectives), so maybe while they were away from the house, this psychopath had finally begun to wander into the house, and maybe even have lost his mind... *cough cough carcass on kitchen table cough cough* Maybe then, after thinking he’d been part of the family for so long and thinking he may have lived in this house, due to his spying and whatnot, he simply set up camp in the only unoccupied room in the house - exactly where the ‘second’ person would be returning to. The second person would’ve been gone, wouldn’t he? So maybe the delusional man may have just made insane assumptions, and forced himself into the family on his own weird terms.
Basically -
First run-through : Insane man, who thinks everything’s fine and dandy, and is unable to see the house for what it really was due to his delusions.
Second run-through : A true family member after having left for a little while, and coming to re-visit family. Maybe not delusional, and can see the house for what it is. Coming home to find a psychopath in his place, deliriously living what he believes to be the perfect life.
This theory is not a full depiction of my thoughts, as some statements are left unsaid and some of the details and facts ARE a bit rough-around the-edges. Clarification can be given upon request, and I’d have no problems with discussing this further.
This is just a theory, and any objections you have to it are perfectly valid. Obviously, I was not present or assisting in the creation of this game, and I couldn’t possibly know the true intentions behind this story. This is just my personal take on the game, and if you have other perspectives, feel free to share them with me, or others in the comments section of this video. I’d love to your takes on my theory, as well as some of your own conspiracies!
(And, uh, sorry if there are any grammatical errors. Feel free to correct me on those, too! I wouldn’t mind a bit :3)
Interesting. The psychopathic hobo does seem to make sense. Perhaps the family member who left did so in a way that tore the family apart and caused them to never return to the house, and the last few minutes were the hobo attacking and beating down the real family member and forcing him to admit that he was the one who tore the family apart (hence the IT WAS MY FAULT stuff)

I was thinking the same thing except te fact that the first one who went in the house was also a family member other than that your theory and mine are pretty much the same, but mine is about the first guy being an actual family member as well, my theory goes like this
There was a feud in the family and the second guy who came back to the abandoned house was the one who started the feud and the first was a family member trying to avoid such a fight and restore the family, but then since the second guy left, the first lost control of himself and instead of makingit all back to normal, he becomes delusional exactly what you just said and killed the whole family whilst there is only one body found while the others were in the utility room.
He then continues to live the life that he originally thought is perfect neglecting what happened before and forgetting it completely and the second guy comes back to the house to see the situation that became the house while he was gone and once he went back to his room and sees a "lone" man someone whom he might not remember due to the drastic change that has come to everything around him and then procedes to make him say it was all his fault killing him in the process as well.
I could totally be wrong, but I'm just sharing what I had in mind with the theory you had formed.

I watched with the lights off...near midnight...alone...under a fuzzy blanket...MISTAKE...I was a kid in the actual 80s. This reminded me so strongly of watching "Tales From The Darkside" late at night (after our parents went to bed), in the dark, with my brother, until we were scared stupid. The music, the mood, the glowing screen, & a young male voice cracking jokes that can't save us from the evil story unfolding, so disturbingly familiar...
It's actually a really good memory. This is what I imagine getting a gift from Anti would be like, if he actually wanted to be kind to you (for, you know, his version of kind). Sincerely, thank you Jack, that was a blast. I just looked up the old Darkside theme and from the first few notes I was giggling nervously and wanting to dive under the desk for safety. It's so funny that after the game ends he describes the house and imagines how we are watching him play.. and it's all 100% accurate. Ha! Watching this at night - in the dark, on my laptop, under the covers, and yes, I imagined the house and stairs, carcass, everything.. So good!
