  • Panasonic has announced the new Panasonic S5II and S5IIX. Both of these two hybrid cameras look like they will be amazing video production tools, but there is still something that I feel is a problem.

Thank you for a great video...
Being a sony fanboy myself for many years I was all set to get the FX 30 until I discovered the price for the recording media!!! Those CFExpress type A are just plain stupidly expensive!!! These things are half the price of a prime lens, then you only have one card. Seriously you know the saying date the camera & marry the lens, well the offspring of that dating is CFExpress type A! You are gonna pay alimony, you would think that Sony learned its lesson with the betamax / vhs disaster way back in the eighty's. In walks Panasonic and they just tick all the boxes even expanding there scope and letting in third party people to give us more choice! You have great lenses at affordable prices you can be like the Mormons and mary many times over, it is certainly affordable. Oh and the UHS II cards, just so much more affordable, you can have a big family like you grandma and have ten to twelve cards in your bag. Also if you happen to find yourself in the middle of the jungle with no more space on your recording media, just walk into the local shop get the sd card on the shelf and you are good to go... So it is time to join the rebel alliance. I'm starting to sound like a Panasonic fanboy!
P.S. did I mention that I also like the S5II?

Really glad you did this video. While I can appreciate that these 2 cameras might not be considered a good comparison because of sensor size, I think many people looking primarily for a video camera with some stills capability will compare them. I certainly am. Shooting on GH4 and GH5, I waited for the GH6 but passed when panasonic did not address the autofocus issue. You gotta provide good video autofocus now. There are just those times when it would be helpful. Had planned buy the fx30 next but decided to wait and see if panasonic would change their game with the next full frame release as I really like their cameras. They get so much right and usually at a good price point. Glad I waited as I'll get the S5 II now. I feel confident that the L-mount line will continue to expand and panasonic has always been great with firmware updates so I expect this one will get some improvements over time.

You were smart to wait. I bought the GH5ii before the R7 and although it was good, I'm not a fan of M4/3. I think panasonic is really going to take the lead in hybrid cameras now that they have the AF fixed

I was on a similar boat as you as I already had the old S1 but wanted a second cam that is cheaper with great auto focus and I was super close to purchasing a canon R7/Sony Fx30 but thankfully I waited. Don’t need to mess around with different color profiles, menus, log profiles, lenses etc. so a definite preorder for me.

Great comment and insight there, Jeff. Panny’s AF can be frustrating at times. It works fairly well for stills, but obviously in need of improvement for Video. My understanding is these newer models of the S5 have improved, but still “Not quite there?” I dont know. I’m not a Video guy. It intrigues me, but frankly I sux at it. 😯 😆

I film Weddings and sold 3 Cameras 2 GH5 with Speed boosters and 1 Canon EOS R and replaced them with 3 of these and 3 Native LUMIX S Lens… all I can say man…. is….This Camera is certified “Incredible”. And I am an experienced Shooter.
Update: I caved 😂 I bought the S5 iix as my 4th Body. The image is insane on both of these models, workflow definitely easier. I did a Live Stream from the S5 iix and the 6K Open Gate.. on how clean the stream was…smh.
Something as simple as Shutter Angle and Real-time Luts really makes the shooting experience more fun. Honestly beforehand I was right there on the FX30 but reviews had me hesitant.
I invested with my Panasonics the Sirui Anamorphic 35mm & 75mm f1.8 1.33x simply makes this unfair at this point price. I will probably keep one Canon around just because I understand the infrastructure and have Native Canon L Glass that I use on the S5 II and can dual purpose keeping a Canon RF Body.
Keeping it real, this is no flex… I sold a lot of gear to move up but it was worth it for sure.

For many years video guys that don't use cinema cameras used the GH5 and dealt with the limitions of the sensor size and auto focus mainly because it had better video features. This will certainly unlock another viable option for those looking into full frame or existing FF users who aren't entirely happy with video features in their current systems.

Seems like a decent camera but no 4k120 and autofocus is not on par with Sony still. Too little too late for anyone with Sony cameras. Too much good e mount glass. For anyone on FX30 or A7iv there is no reason to switch especially if you have a good amount of glass.

I completely relate. I have the FX30. Now, I’m mainly a filmmaker. So, photo features are not something I’m concerned about. Which is why I got the FX30.
That being said. I’m actually considering picking up the S5iix. Not only because of the PDAF in a Panasonic camera, and recording to SSD, but because I prefer the skin tones that Panasonic cameras have. With Sony, I always have to tweak skin tones in post.
I’m waiting until May when the S5iix comes out. That will give me some time to think about the switch. Which I’m not really concerned about. I actually started shooting with the GH5, even shooting a feature film with the GH5.
It’s a big decision. But , I’ve switched before. But, not having to mess with skin tones in post all the time is a huge plus.
    I guess I’m already sold. 😊

Fx30 vs S5ii , they don't exactly compare fairly due to the sensor size although the price might be similar. When considering changing systems, one major thing to consider is the Lens Mount, Lens options, and the cost associated with transitioning into that system. On the topic of L mount, sigma, etc, another consideration is ergonomics and weight. I'm curious to see if you end up getting one how you like it for your use case.

    • @MichaelWTurner

@@MichaelWTurner Lumix has intentionally made their 1.8 primes (18, 24, 35, 85) compact and virtually the exact same size. This so people don’t have to worry about rebalancing a gimbal. Just change the lens. Also filter size is the same. Lumix, Sigma, Wetzler, and Leica are part of the L Mount. DJI is also a member. All lenses are considered first party since they all share the same lens protocols. The S5 II is more compact than people think. Yes, their are some chonker lenses as part of the L Mount. But Sigma, Leica and Lumix make some compact lenses.

From the looks of things... the video from the FX30 is working flawlessly for you. No need to jump ship. If the only thing you're really missing is photos then just get a dedicated stills camera for that.
I had ordered the FX30 but canceled it once I found out about the S5II. Right now I'm taking my time with the decision. I have already have the 24mm GM so the logical thing would be to just get the FX30 and call it a day but like you... I just don't know what to do.
The only thing that has me apprehensive about the S5II is that I haven't seen a lens that's blown me away. Everything reasonable is F/1.8 which is only 1/3 of a stop faster than an FX30 + a GM lens. Not only that but you have the same APSC crop as the FX30 on anything 4K60 and up.
I'm making the decision sound way easier than it is. Anyhow... good luck with your decision.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  Рік тому

The Sigma 30mm f1.4 is an excellent lens. It is a low light beast and great bokeh, but I can't lie when it comes to talking head videos, I typically use the tamron 17-70mm f2.8. I find it easier to have a zoom to dial in my shot without moving my tripod. However, you could use the zoom feature on the sony to get around that with a prime. But the catch is that you will lose tracking AF. It may not matter though. It's not something I have used for my youtube videos much so it's hard for me to say that it will work perfectly. I'll make it a point to try it out in my next video.

Could be my age or the alcohol has killed most of my brain cells. Don't know how you do it; why not stick to Sony and get the A7iv. Saying that, my $500 G7 takes better video than my $3,000 A7R111.

Talking about slow motion BTW... Lumix S5II and S5IIX don't have new Phase Detect AF in 1080p full frame 50,60,100 and 120 FPS but only old Contrast AF which is the biggest disappointment... So for some reason people who prefer to shoot 1080p FF in slow-mo from 50 to 120 fps they should do that with old glitchy Contrast base AF. Same for all of those who were hoping to upscale 1080p 50-120 fps to 4k - no PDAF. And taking into account it's a video-oriented hybrid camera, it looks like without a firmware update in the next several months almost perfect camera becomes garbage. I preordered S5IIX and now looking forward to the firmware update. Hope they will fix it by the time S5IIX ships. If not - will just move to another brand.

Thanks for confirming that. I watched a video with one of the Panasonic Reps talking about that in an interview. He brushed by it extremely quickly as he was talking about the features of the camera. I picked up on it though...lol. We're all pretty much forced to shoot in 4k these days to get the most out the cameras in general. I remember the Canon C100 having the best HD that I've ever seen. Every other camera that I've used that has 4k in it doesn't look as good when shooting HD. But then again that could just be the way the UA-cam compression works because that is when I see the biggest difference.

One thing to think about before jumping to the S5 Mark II is increased moire due to not having an optical low pass filter. There are quite a few videos highlighting a potential issue. No OLPF is great for photography for those that want the sharpest image but more often than not, not so good for video. It's something that can completely ruin a video shot, and if you only have one chance to capture it then you are out of luck. Knowing that you can work around it but one of the hardest to avoid is the problem with certain types of fabric/clothing. It can look awful. ua-cam.com/video/G1sgtD5dfII/v-deo.html&ab_channel=HopkinsFilms

The Panasonic S5ii seems to be a really nice camera. I had the S5 before and was not happy with the auto focus and the lenses where very expensive. I changed to the Sony a6400, its smaller, there are many after market lenses and it have a great picture quality. I was thinking to upgrade to the FX30, but the missing shutter and the missing burst mode is really a problem for me. Im still waiting for a possible a7000 series camera. An alternative could be the A7rV. You can use your sony lenses and film in crop mode. Or you can buy full frame lenses and use it on both of your cameras (FX30 and A7rV). To deal with different colors and different lenses on one set would be for me a real dealbraker. I would suggest either stay with the FX30 and buy a full frame Sony, or sell it and buy two Panasonics with lenses.

I got the FX30 as a light video camera for use as a handheld vlogging camera, the stability and autofocus were my top features and the fact that they gave it a larger, better screen. I sold some of my Nikon lens and kept it and the Nikon Z6II. So far it has performed quite well and the low light performance, for what I shoot has also been good. I went with Sony as I could adapt their lens to work on Nikon cameras. For me while I like what Panasonic has done with the Lumix S5II and upcoming S5IIX, the weight of the camera and lens makes it no good for my use for traveling.
The price makes it alluring, especially with the improvements. If you have other Panasonic gear and lens, then getting the new body makes sense. The FX30 could be good to keep as it has some pretty good performance as well. Lots of people would say getting the FX3 would be a good way to go as well. I ended up selling the rest of my Nikon gear for the A7R V, for the improvements it received. Couldn’t go with the FX3 as they were the same price and the specs I wanted was only going to be available on the A7R V. You do video mainly so, the Panasonic S5II makes sense from a feature/cost perspective, especially as it will also have some good photo capabilities.

Panasonic's best autofocus cinema camera is their budget cinema camera? Although it makes fantastic strategies, I am not sure it's the right strategy. It's a bit of a cash grab, it feels desperate. Do GH6 users feel betrayed? Now there are many options out there, and Sony, Canon, Nikon users are pretty happy. Which of these users are more likely to buy the S5II. Is to stop the bleeding?

Have to use 1080p in APSC mode if wanting Phase AF at 50fps or 60fps for NTSC. Using Full Frame 1080p at 50fps or 60fps will get the user Contrast DFD AF only. The S5ii is not much of a 1080p camera when it comes to using all the features of Phase AF. Looks like Lumix concentrated on 4K and above for using Phase AF. For reliable focus in 1080p above 30fps, the user still has to do MF, Manual Focusing; unless you do 1080p APSC mode for 50/60 fps.. Seems obvious the S5ii is a 4K Phase AF only camera. For whatever reason, it seems Lumix is ignoring 1080p MP4, Focus performance. I use 1080p and it seems there is little need for me to get the S5ii. For 1080p the S5ii seems to offer little improvement to the 1080p in S5.

@@aman681 Good Morning, mate. No kidding I also invested in an A7siii. The 10 bit XAVCS for 1080p is extraordinary, I think, and it has PDAF. I like the 240fps in HD, even if it is not FHD 1080p, for wildlife.. My a7siii continues to amaze. There is a lot to like about the S5. Took me awhile to accept the fact to use S5 as MF only using Low Peaking, with display of viewfinder in monochrome. The struggle is real, sometimes we really need reliable AF. As a disabled veteran I sometimes want the fun of spot on AF. I don't have an FX30, it has no viewfinder. Can use the a7siii in APSC for tight 1080p video. Am looking at a7IV (as B cam) because it also has 10 bit 1080p with PDAF, a viewfinder, and ability to go APSC/35 Super. Must say, disappointed that Lumix left out PDAF in most 1080p MP4 modes. In my experience, Lumix MOV files just won't play on any old Video App or player. A MOV requires conversion to MP4 container in order to be accepted for UA-cam. Sony has my interest because Sony seems to be sticking with and expanding 1080p MP4/XAVC capabilities. Although, I have a strong PC for video editing, there are many, many people who struggle to be able to get a PC for proper editing of 4K and above. It seems 1080p remains the standard and I like how Sony still expands and supports 1080p. The BMPCC 4K cameras really look interesting. How is stability on the BMPCC 4K camera? Seems to be a lot of magic in MFT, I just wish someone would take full advantage of it.

    • @aman681
      @aman681 Рік тому +1

@@don_at_large Thanks for your reply mate.Totally agree with all your points. Yeah, all these compressed (Mirrorless cams offer) are a bit difficult to edit unless you have a very powerful computer. The BMPCC 4K cams are excellent. There's no stabilisation or autofocus. They are proper cine cameras. The codecs are amazing to work with. I can edit 4K 3:1 compression BRAW or Proress with hardly any issues at all in resolve. I use speedboosters with my BM cams so the field of view effectively becomes 1.2 crop (35mm equiv). Its just that I do weddings mainly so I want a smaller camera, good ibis, battery life and dual card recording. I only use autofocus for 10% of my work and use vintage glass for my work.
