Hoy, I built this kit! I painted the exact same paint scheme. The sails for it I received from 'His Models,' such a beautiful combination. The Golden Hind is my favorite ship design of all sailing ships. I build model ships for a living, 29 years. I grew up working on, living on restoring and building sailing vessels most all my life, I'm 65 now. This ship, with the colorful sails from His Models is the best looking ship in the museum. This little rascal sailed around the World in 1578. Returned to England full of gold, that's when Queen Elizabeth the first knighted Sir Francis Drake. This ship discovered San Francisco Bay. I highly recommend this model. Make a jig to cut tape into triangles to mask the paint scheme.

Hi Jason !! Saw this one at my local today (Dec. 16, 23) and, while researching, came across your review. It strikes me, given the colour of the plastic parts, this may be an Academy moulding.? Perhaps Airfix sent the moulds off to be tuned up and pressed by Academy?? Anywho, great review as per, and I will definitely be picking this up next trip to the shop! Cheers!!

I’m kinda in a stop phase of this one at the moment. I painted the vac sails tan and dull coated them, looped about 20 bits of thread around each yardarm. Glued them in place to make sure they were angled like they had some pressure on them. Basically trying to do as much rigging as feasible after studying several 16th rigging books. I closed all the gun ports. Made some anchor buoys, but the best thing I did was put in framing around insides of the ship and railings. I think it looks pretty good 🥴

Gotta admit, when I built it from kit, I really got into it, ageing the sails is fun but all in all I would have been better trying to stick to standard Airfix logic... Great fun and an end product which is very rewarding. Keep up the good work.

This model brings back many memories as it was one of my first models in the early-mid 60's. Back in those days a model kit was a go to gift for a boy if you really didnt know what to get them as a gift. I had several but never finished any of them. At first my interests was model cars, later on it turned to WW2 aircraft. So old sailing ships didnt much interest me.

Hi Jason, another great review. This looks like a great start for someone wanting to add their own details. I could see how it would look amazing with some aftermarket stuff. I remember attempting the Cutty Sark, I think it was a Revell kit way back in the mid 70's. I don't think I ever finished it. My uncle was a modeler and he built the USS Constitution. It had to be back in the early 70's. His turned out really nice as I remember. I am going to have to try one of these tall ships again one of these days. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. Jeff

I built one in 2012 no fit issues. The thread comes in.3 mm and .6 mm and can be stained with tea to give a more realistic colour.

I have built this model and the sequence of construction and painting is wrong. Painting the intricate detail on the hull is near impossible once it is glued together. You are absolutely right about replacing the masts and yards with wood. The "Rigging Device" is fiddly, it's easier to just rig it directly on the ship. This turns into a very nice ship model with just a little extra effort, nothing too difficult just a little extra time. Great Review.

hi there, good video. i have at the moment an original kit 1977 made in england by Airfix, the plastic is a lot better.the instuctions are the same but the paints are not,at the time Airfix paints were used with the prefix M, its a good kit but at the time airfix missed out on the stern lantern which the ship had,but you can get one from cornwall model boats,

These old airfix period ships are nothing more than a rip off. The moulds are now in poor condition, and in dire need of replacement. Come on airfix we expect more. If you are looking for a modern plastic sailing ship, have a look at trumpeter 1.60 Mayflower. It has its problems, but it is beautifully moulded, and huge. As sail. Enthusiasts we get ripped off by most of the manufacturers. Nearly all the kits on the market date back to the sixties, it's about time we started getting something new.
