There used to be a replica of the Golden Hind at Southend on Sea years ago that housed the Waxwork Museum\Chamber of Horrors. I went there about 40 years ago and I was most impressed with the ship. I wonder what the plastic is like on that era of moulding Randal? A lot of them came out of France via Hellers old and worn out factory at that time and were very badly moulded.

Both are ways of modelling and Airfix fans never complain about Tamiya kits, for the most part. I have told my own thoughts on the subject in other videos, but don’t bash the brand, just the hype and abuse from the Tamiya fan boys. Absurd really.
Great review Harry. By a pace of serendipity, Drachinifel released a "5 minute" video on the Golden Hind yesterday. The better replica of the Golden Hinde is dry docked at London Bridge near Southwark cathedral. Shout if you need any photographs for detailing. It's a short tube away (although I've never been on board her even though I've lived in london for 20 odd years now).

Would love to see the Golden Hind finished, but I know you have a lot of subjects on your plate to complete. Keep the vids coming mate, and cheers for now!
I have a vintage Revell kit of the Golden Hind which was made in the mid 1960s. I got it at a thrift store, and it isn't complete but I can do some scratch building. The vacuum formed sail sheet is ruined. The Airfix reissue looks much better and I shall have to look for it. I wanted a Golden Hind model because it is part of the history of the central Oregon Pacific coast of the US. Among other things, it was there that Drake made the decision not to seek the Northwest Passage. Good decision because there isn't such a passage. The paintwork on your models looks wonderful. I look forward to your GH build, and especially how you paint the elaborate decorative geometric designs on the hull.
Harry, you look great!!!! Molding wood!!! How????? and wow!!!! I love the Prince. What a BEAUTY like the Wasa. Yes; Hind is a female deer, especially a red deer, over three years old. Her counterpart, the mature male, is called a stag. In other species of deer the hind may be referred to as a doe and the male as a hart or a buck.
In my childhood, my brother received an Airfix Saint Louis ship model kit as a gift, and it remains as one of the most beautiful memories of my childhood. Unfortunately, finding this kit, like other Airfix ship model kits, is very difficult. I don't understand why Airfix isn't re-releasing these kits; despite all its flaws, Revell is at least continuing its plastic sailing ship series.
They lost a lot of the old moulds and many were broken, so they are only re-releasing what they have that still can be used for injection moulding. Heller do a St Louis as does Lindberg, but I do prefer the Airfix one myself.
Although I made mostly tanks and submarines, I remember being awed by those huge Revell kits of old sailing ships back in the 60s. They were always on the top shelves at the department stores and you had to ask a saleslady to have a look at them. I never did buy them (although I bought a few of the small scale ones) since they seemed so complicated I thought I wouldn't be able to do them justice.
The thing about sailing ships is the repetition of simple things which makes it appear complicated. Each thing is quite easy, you just have lots of them. So once you realise that you will lose your fear of the ship build being very complex. You just break it down into multiples of small jobs you can handle, then repeat.
Hello mate. OK, your videos have convinced me to start a ship kit. Do you think it's worth starting with a plastic kit or a wooden kit to learn about rigging? I'm sure your rigging kits are selling like hot cakes but I'll buy a set for my future efforts and to help the cat food fund 😉
All depends on the complexity of the kit. Best choose something with only 1 or 2 masts and not a lot of sails, that way the rigging will be minimal and an easy job to cut your teeth on.
@@HarryHoudiniModels Love your work mate. I build all my models from coffee stirrer sticks and chopsticks that I bomb from the local convenience store. Still. It's a hobby :)
Pen them a letter… or start a petition. I hear this request nearly every week. You guys should get together and see if someone can CAD a 3D model for you.
You keep saying "circumcision" ; you do mean "circumnavigate" don't you, or are you mispronouncing that on porpoise? I'm not even interested in sailing ships, but I just sat for a half hour watching your review. I enjoy your style and enthusiasm, very interesting and entertaining.
Not sure where you get your release info from Harry but Airfix released the 1/72 kit in a Red Box up to 2016. _Golden Hind 09258-4/09258/A50046/A09258V 1/72 scale. Available as 09258-4 from 1978 to 1980, listed as 911201 in 1985 catalogue but not issued. Reissued as 09258 from 1988 to 2002, in gift set A50046 from 2010 to 2016 and as A09258V from 2019. Also issued by MPC (USA) as 1-5904 16th Century Galleon in 1982._ I'm liking the mould colour, at least it's not that orrid dark grey so thanks for the look at the bits, didn't they used to include ghastly looking black moulded rat lines? the cotton reels look like a better bet, progress Harry! I'll email you a link to an accurate list.
Well that is annoying. As Scalemates only listed the last release of 1999, and I had not seen the kit in the stores down here since I returned to the hobby, plus with Airfix not usually releasing a “Vintage Classic” unless it was an old kit out of production for a while, I simply assumed Airfix had no 21st century red boxes. Thanks for the TXT file, but it is long and convoluted. A spread sheet would have been a better way to store and share the information.
@@HarryHoudiniModels - it's ok Harry I'm not the Airfix Police, 1997 is presumably where the cotton reels were added as 'new parts'? Airfix ran it from 1978 - 1980, went bust, Humbrol ran it from 1988 - 2002, went bust, Hornby ran it from 2010 to 2016, 2019 > and the cotton reels are still rolling off the table! not sure Scalemates mentioned most of that. The red box release is included on Scalemates just not on the same page, there's two timelines there, one with and one without the red box. Part of the problem is Scalemates is based on box style changes without saying when the run ended, just when the next box style or rejig began which isn't necessarily the same date or even the next release start date, the dates and gaps in production are not there or based purely on box design changes. I'm not sure much has been changed by Vintage Classic releases except it's a clever way to keep using the old tooling without as many complaints except to say it's brought some kits not seen for decades out of hiding, just not in this case Harry, some of those large scale Ships go back to 1962 but even they've been seen in the 21st Century, HMS Revenge last seen in 1991 perhaps longest out of production (without finding each in turn in the list).
Too much waffling, not enough building and rigging! 😜😉😆😂 I'd love to see today's Airfix release a 1/72 new tooled sailing ship, should be somewhat different from their old releases....what's Top 10 list? I hope that all is well at your end of the trenches.....

For God's sake Harry! Here you are a grown man building Airfix kits like a kid from the 70s!! ....wish my wife would let me :)
I am sure she will… ask nicely
@@HarryHoudiniModels Love your work mate. I build all my models from coffee stirrer sticks and chopsticks that I bomb from the local convenience store. Still. It's a hobby :)
@@HarryHoudiniModels I took your advice and asked nicely , She said I could have a TUG ...at least I think that is what she said
Has a late comment on this video, just managed a FARK duo, with a first issue Cutty Sark(White Box 1960's) and Golden Hind (1970's)
A double FARK… well done Peter
@@HarryHoudiniModels just managed to turn it to a triple FARK by getting the 1973 white box Revenge, plus reboxed Victory and Endevour
I wish Airfix would do a 1/100 scale Mary Rose. Their starter kit is cool for 1/400, but it has some pretty sketchy and toy-like detail.
Pen them a letter… or start a petition. I hear this request nearly every week. You guys should get together and see if someone can CAD a 3D model for you.
@@HarryHoudiniModels, good idea, why can't I think like that?🤪
So Airfix was originally Hair Fix? Nice.
LOL yes!
bingo-bango indeed
If you say so…
Tallship Warships.
Yep
You keep saying "circumcision" ; you do mean "circumnavigate" don't you, or are you mispronouncing that on porpoise?
I'm not even interested in sailing ships, but I just sat for a half hour watching your review. I enjoy your style and enthusiasm, very interesting and entertaining.
I was just making a dick of myself ;)
I want to look into building this kit! Thanks! Love your videos.
An unnecessarily cutting remark. 😬
Also issued by MPC (USA) as 1-5904 16th Century Galleon in 1982._
I'm liking the mould colour, at least it's not that orrid dark grey so thanks for the look at the bits, didn't they used to include ghastly looking black moulded rat lines? the cotton reels look like a better bet, progress Harry!
I tried to build a plastic sailing ship but found it did not do a good job reflecting these ships and instead I only build wood model sailing ships.
Wood ships are great, but not everyone has the wood working skills or tools.
Too much waffling, not enough building and rigging! 😜😉😆😂
I'd love to see today's Airfix release a 1/72 new tooled sailing ship, should be somewhat different from their old releases....what's Top 10 list?
I hope that all is well at your end of the trenches.....
All good, just working too much. First day off in 3 weeks today.
У автора видео очень класный прикид!👍🎉
Thank you
Hi Harry. I have watched a lot of your video's. I have heard a lot of good and bad, so I would like to rant on my experience with the Black Pearl that I am on at the moment, came with a very small amount of rope, the dead eyes came lazer printed 1.5mm x 7mm not good enough to use so I had to make my own which came as a challenge, came with no Horizonal main mask, the details were shit, not enough guns, no life boat , there is a lesson to be learnt by not doing my home work before I bought, Well that's it for now..
What bad things did you hear in my videos?
His global what!!😂😂😂🤦🏻♂️
You heard me… LOL
circumcision lol
Yep he had to get around that one!
