I built this kit when it was new and finished it, including hand painting, in about two hours. I was very pleased with it! But Greg takes model building to the ultimate level - great to watch, almost impossible to replicate.
I built this for a good friend a few years ago. A river nightmare but sanded and smoothed it out. Used aftermarket decals which went down well. I kept photos of the model, since it turned out very nice. Good to see this video. Brings back good memories
Most people would have given up and chucked it in the bin, but what a amazing recovery of a this late 60's Arfix classic kit. I remember building it with the old school thick Airfix glue, in the little tube that you had to cut the tip off to use and that had no lid , so you stuck a match in it after you finished . As a little kid I was amazed and loved the opening cargo doors !
It’s a really amazing aeroplane and that last scene with ramp cars and people is museum quality. Loved every second of this build especially the moulding and rebuilding to allow the doors to be opened, brilliant job.
Glorious build, and my big sister remembers flying from Lyde in 1955 with mum and dad and a motorbike and sidecar on a freightliner, and having to have a medical before being allowed to fly!
Your patience, attention to detail and pursuit of accuracy never cease to amaze me. For us viewers it makes for a fascinating watch and I hope you're pleased with the superb end result in spite of the many frustrations encountered in getting there! In a corny B&W British film "A Weekend With Lulu" (it's on UA-cam) a Silver City Superfreighter features in the last few minutes.
I remember watching these as they flew low over my Uncle's house in Southend, taking off for Europe. Also used to see the later four engined Carvairs rumble over too.
@@Robutube1 They were impressive, weren't they ? As a kid they always seemed to me to lumber along, yet they were quite awesome as they flew right over the rooftops as we all had evening tea😂😂
Excellent. I made one as boy. Got an unmade one (boxed) in my spare room. Brought back happy memories. I remember playing in G-ANVR in 1965 when it went to the dump at Southend airport awaiting scrapping. Me and my mates climbed out of the escape hatch on the roof and we used to sit on the wing watching the take offs and landings of the Carvairs and Viscounts. G-ANWK and others were lined up. Needless to say we helped ourselves to many of the old dials etc for souvenirs. "DO NOT JAR - HANDLE LIKE EGGS". Still got a few bits. Thanks, cheered me up.😊
That must have been a great visit. The aircraft was leased by Air Charter in Mar 1955 for operations on the airline’s new cross-Channel Southend-Calais car ferry service - ground-breaking at the time!
A beautiful build of a kit I'm sure any of us attempted in our youth but I'm equally sure none of us managed to build anything as impressive as your build - Brilliant
Watching this build took me straight back to around 1959-1960 when I was a young teenage Airfix fan. Back then their kits ranged from two shillings (10p in new money) to 17 shillings and six pence (87.5p in new money). I think the Bristol Freighter was around 15 shillings (75p in new money). Yes they were a bit on the crude side but in the range of most schoolboys pocket money. Over the years they have come a long way and I'm astounded at the detail in todays kits. Of course the current prices reflect this. As a final note I loved watching your build of what wasn't considered a popular model.
Great stuff, Jeff; I am envious! It's great to see you back and I look forward to chatting with you on Jason 's 'Anything that floats' group build. Cheers Phil
Some 63 years ago (aged 10) I took my 2nd and 3rd air experience flights in the Bristol freighter, flying from Southend (Rochford) to Oostend on day trip to Belgium with my parents. The outward flight was in, I believe, a British Air Ferries craft and was noisy, smelly and uncomfortable. The return journey was in a Sabena Airlines version which was not quite as noisy or smelly but was made extremely uncomfortable when we encountered a thunderstorm on the way back! In the dark! My mum vowed never to fly again but in later life relented for a family holiday to Croatia. I, naturally being an adventurous lad, loved every second of it, including the storm!
I have one of these, and I thought it would be a quick build.!! What an amazing job, beautiful. An old story ,one of these beauties was on fina😂l approach into a North American airport. The tower controller asked, "Say what kind of plane is that?" The pilot, a Brit said proudly, "This is a Bristol Freighter." After a short pause, the controller responded, "Did you build it yourself? "😂
Incredible work, you sir are truly a MASTER BUILDER and an artist also! Wouldn’t it be fun to have old Goldfinger’s car going into the plane like in the movie! Great build sir!
Excellent build. When pouring rubber just pour it in one continuous flow into one corner and allow it to find its way around the pattern. Continue all the way to the top. That way no bubbles will attach to the pattern.
I had this kit three times in my life (I'm 59), in the 1970s and 1980s. The plastic was nice and thick on this kit, when it was made at this time. Another nice thick plastic kit, made at the same time, was the Short Sunderland lll. I haven't bought Airfix kits for over thirty years, the plastic is too thin, almost translucent.
I watched this build again, when I was a kid, I was devastated that this kit was so bad, that, back then it defeated me. If I weren't a railway and boat modeller, Id have another go. Superb build on your part👍👍😊😊
Great build. I made one in the mid sixties. Then I built another about 1995 or 1996 when it was re-released. I painted it mainly using Halfords spray cans. I did the white cockpit framing using thin strips of white electrical insulating tape . The whole model including the canopy was then brushed with Johnson's Kleer. I still have the model in mint condition.
Excellent job on the Super Freighter. Displaying it off loading some cars makes for a intriguing scene. Great eye for adding needed details. Keep up the super work. Bill
Fantastic build Greg! Show's in no uncertain terms what can be done with these old classics. This is my kind of modelling too. I love nothing more than taking old kits, often subjects that are not available elsewhere, and correcting and adding all the missing details. I could build more state of the art models, but stuff like this is what I enjoy the most. Makes me wish Airfix had released a Carvair to go along with the Superfreighter.
I lived inside the wreck of an old Superfreighter for two years during my youth. Consequently I knew every inch of the fuselage very well. What you have done here is commendable! Though I wonder at your infinite powers of patience! Well done and good luck.
Not for you yet another Tamiya P-47! Your projects are getting more extensive with even better results! A wonderful model. May I also compliment you on your editing, commentary and production in general. Everything explained, no time wasted.
Another superb build, Greg. I built this kit back in the 1970s. I really like your solution for the poor glazing in the main cabin area. Replacing the entire flight deck area was a masterwork - very impressive. Keep the builds coming.
I remember building one of these way back in early 60s. I was only 10 or 11! Those clam shell doors never worked! And I have a memory the decals we Silver City.
Your presentation is just right. And in this case only, the old yokes are not the best ones! You have turned a nation once proud of their boyhood modelling skills into one which now realise we were a nation of bodgers! Really impressive 👍. Truly.
I am really looking forward to seeing this build. Greg, you are correct. Much as I wanted this kit when I was 10 years old, I could not find it anywhere. I do not doubt that you will turn an old moulding into a beautiful piece of work.
One took me to France; with my car of course. A treat my kids will never know! The fare for me was more than for the car! No Q's,. No baggage search. I was the kid who built one of these back in the day - it didn't look anything like as good as your one. Love the markings aswell - just before BUA became part of British Caledonian.
Fantastic work Greg. You really are a masochist, but the end result well and truly justifies the means. You've probably forgotten all the pain anyway just by gawking at those new exquisite clam shell doors for a few minutes. Look forward to the next project of self-flagellation.
Literally made a silk purse from a sows ear. I'm not surprised you had to take a few days off! Fantastic build Greg 👍 Now go buy a Tamiya tank and take it easy on yourself 😀.
