@@britoca I don't see it as overly formal, we're just not accustomed to the terms of communication being used. But at its essence, it's really just "hello," followed by "do you want to dance." And honestly, if you've ever had to try to TALK to someone in a crowded dancehall with a band playing... well, I understand why folks might have preferred to communicate with gestures.
