You looked like you were really enjoying being a wood worker. The good news is that by selecting the stain in the darkest possible color, exposure to the sun will cause the maximum damage to the wood so that you can enjoy installing a brand new bed in a couple of years or perhaps even before then.

If you know anyone that does wood working it pretty easy to make a pickup bed replacement set. About four hours including fitting is all it takes and the material cost using yellow pine is less than $200.00 including stain and sealer. If you need new metal hold down strips you can get plain steel ones or pop for the extra cost stainless or chrome ones along with the required carriage bolts to hold it all together. I did my 79 Ford 4X4 step side short bed in a weekend when I pulled the bed to replace the fuel tank.

I got lucky one year, I was at the Carlisle all truck show and flea market and found a oak wood bed kit the last day of the show and aquired it for only 200$. One heck of a deal. Yours looks great.

Great job! The stinkin' price though. No old world craftsmanship there. My guess is the raw lumber is all CNC cut and milled. Question. Are the stainless runners for looks? Every one of these style beds has them. Yet to me they don't seem to offer any real protection. Thanks for all the insight.

I've always said I'd go dark instead of light stain on a wood bed... it just looks.. like the height of sophistication.. even in a patina 67' / 68' even if you do have a small back window hehe

I love this build along with the Chevhell! Between the two vehicles, I'm not sure I'd need anything else. My question is with the gas tank filler. Did you plan ahead enough that the filler fit what appears to be perfectly centered on the board, or is that the real reason you're called "Lucky"? Thanks for sharing your builds!
