A much needed ongoing conversation. Dr. Phillips is brilliant! And so are you Reese! Thank you for having her. I can't believe I am just learning about her in these past few months. But, I live in Hong Kong so I suppose I have an excuse. I'm catching up. Bought her book The Garden Within and can't get enough of the plethora of interviews and podcasts. She really has the keys to healing trauma!
Thank you so much for this conversation! Dr. Philips' comment about enduring the tension really resonated with me. It takes courage and willingness to do that. Through education and perseverance, I believe more people will be willing to endure the tension and conjure up the courage to explore their feelings, reflect on their actions and make positive changes going forward. We are all fallible as human beings but also capable of growth and change. We can do this!
Same, Dr. Anita! I am a multicultural psychologist, and I worked so hard to immerse my daughter in positive images, but at the same age as your daughter (Kindergarten), my daughter came home one day and said she wished she was White. Ouch! Wow! Despite my best efforts, the negative messages still got through.
I just subscribed, Reese ;*) Love your "Shine On" show. I watched all episodes but, yes.. growing up as a Native American back in the mid 70's - I was treated in pretty much in same manner as a person of color and I also would ask my mother those types of questions. Mom would always tell me that I was/am as pretty as those girls on the magazines. I didnt believe her at that time lol but she did her best to always encourage me to be confident and tell me that I'm both beautiful on the inside and out. You are the best, Reese ;*)
What resonated with me: how do we endure the tension between what I thought and what I found out, which constitutes the world as it is right now in all of its diversity (much of which is unknown to us in its rich fullness). I would complement that we need to endure this tension of the world as it is and the world as we can imagine, the world as it could be, and how we can work to bring it into being, principally through education.
Awesome 👍 ladies. Keep up the good work. Let truth within these well needed dialog & awareness conversation free us all from the bondage of toxic racism
As a young white woman, I'm older now, I had a problem with with those images too. I thought I had to look like them too and then I wasn't pretty if I didn't. Some of us also based our self-worth on looking like them. For many of us it was at least somewhat of a struggle too. Now I know that beauty comes in many varieties. And I do see many images of black and brown women in the media and the like. And there are also plus-size models.
I've always enjoyed you as an actress from back in the Election days, but it is nice to know that you are the kind of woman that I could be friends with without fear of being subjected to mini-oppression.
She so amazing person to come out of this feel for her daughter too and her very done Renee look after yourself love corrinne my friend thinking of you all way
Trauma? My ancestors experienced trauma too but am I experiencing the pain & suffering they went through? The answer is no. My freedom was fought for just like it is here in America. It's about having respect for those before me who sacrificed their lives to make mine better not so I could live in the mindset that my insufficiencies in life is the other races fault! I'm a middle aged Hispanic woman who's gone through trauma from those of other ethnicities through out my lifetime but I did not become a victim. I went to a community college that was mostly black & I paid for my education & books. The black student's tuition & books was paid for them. As soon as many of the students received their checks for financial aid they dropped their classes. I was a working single mom who didn't get any financial help but I dare not call it black privilege because then I'll be labeled as racist. Instead it opened my eyes to how broken society is for many not just black people. A black instructor of mine who marched along Martin Luther King was highly disrespected by a black student in her classroom. The instructor banned the student from her classroom so I ask was my instructor wrong for doing that? My answer is no it's called not being tolerate to other people's ignorance especially when displayed in a very disrespectful way to someone who marched along a civil rights leader. The experince has made me stronger. I continued my education I continue to honor ALL of those who fought for my rights with respect & dignity. In the end I label myself as prejudice. Prejudice against those who are ignorant, disrespectful & intolerant toward diversity & in my experience it doesn't matter the skin color because I've been discriminated by many ethnicities. It's everywhere not just with blacks. The narrative is set to cause major divide & separation.
Please be open minded to white girls and women too as we are with similar struggles and now, many are ostrasized even by white men. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder yet we are all in survival mode (men and women) thus while we know appearance is important we are unable to keep up the appearance. God bless everyone! TY Reese, you are awesome!
If a child need a billboard advertisement to feel beautiful then you are teaching them the wrong things in life. White women don't even look like those advertisements, no one does, they are perfect. Those billboards are solely designed to make us consumers, to make us all feel bad about ourselves so we buy more shit! If you want to encourage that then, fine, don't cry to me when you got billboards of black women who look absolutely perfect and that same child still doesn't feel beautiful because advertisement want you to feel ugly because then you will buy the product to feel better. Don't you get how advertising works?!?
Awesome women. Great to listen to Dr Anita. Thanks for inviting her Reese.

Awesome, Reese! Love the inspiration and insight. Hopefully we will make change. It’s time for all people to be treated equally! Thanks!
