    Thank you for giving the Yamaha another look over, apart from yourself and gene at audioholics everyone who tested these when they were released about 2 ya, other reviewers have not went back to check after the updates. Everyone did for D&M but not the Yamaha, i know why.
    Again, thanks for the work you are putting in.

      Glad you like the approach. I believe we should be looking at all brands and give them a look once the firmware has stabilized. Many brands have experienced problems with their initial releases - some just get through the turbulence more quickly and will less pain to owners. -Jon

    At +9dB your subs are almost at the maximum allowed in the menu system. What I do is I put the physical volume knob on both subs at 25% then let YPAO run again and now my two subwoofers are -1dB and +4dB and the centre speaker is around -4dB. That's when I was truly able to dial in the sub's volume to how I wanted them to sound.

    Thank you for the shout-out Jon!
    YPAO sounds like it's doing some interesting things. I'm interested in hearing how it compares to Magic Beans! Also, MB can export to with settings specific to YPAO.

    • @ripewave

      Joe - getting caught up on responses this week. Sorry for the delay.
      I was able to export Magic Beans settings and import them into the Yamaha A8A. The differences between YPAO and beans was not as clear to me as with the ones we already compared.
      I now have the Monoprice HTP-1 and ARCAM AV41 (both with Dirac Live support) inhouse and will try the same.

    Fantastic thanks for your great review.
    I have the CXA-5200 and configured my speakers and multiple subwoofers using the parametric EQ.
    I was using the mini dsp 2×24 HD but it produced a loud audible thump through my subwoofers when powering off the CXA-5200.
    I stopped using the mini dsp because the parametric EQ with fine tuning was able to get rid of the peaks and nulls in the bass department. You can customise the Yamaha's sound however you want to.

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  10 місяців тому

      I appreciate that feedback. Surprise the MiniDSP would introduce some bad elements, perhaps it is the combination of things. Glad the PEQ in the Yamaha gets you to a better place. Makes sense. -Jon

    Great review. I upgraded my 3040 to a 3080 a few years ago and noticed that your chart compares the 3080 to the A8A, with not a lot of differences, but saw that other reviewers found significant faults with it. I think I will wait until the next iteration.

    Excellent. I use a Yamaha 2080 and have Polk LSIM line as my theater speakers.I found the spatial audio Toolkit worked great with my Yamaha. Thinking of changing up to a sony ES model just to try it out but Im going to wait till I get more feedback on its performance. Sounds like Magic Beans is a game changer. Ive never been able to figure out the Yamaha PEQ. Might jump on Beans when its released.

    I currently use the 2080 & have enjoyed it & never had an issue with it.
    Im going to upgrade my entire 7.2.4 system soon & will purchase a new receiver.
    At present I’m torn between this A8A & flagships from Integra & Sony. Replies & recommendations appreciated . I will use separate amps for LCR speakers but not interested in total separates

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  10 місяців тому +1

      Glad your experience with the 2080 has been very positive. All the brands are able to support your 7.2.4 configuration, so you can focus on sound quality and features. So far I have found the Yamaha to sound better then others I have tested. Integra is one my list, but Sony I believe will be next. I think your approach to use separate amps for LCR should be sufficient and will alleviate the load on the receiver. -Jon

    Reality is most don't touch the volume knob. Usually the results are done with the remote. Which is why if you sell a used AV product without the remote, it is a tough sell. i bought a used Anthem Receiver and the remote is fine, and the volume control likewise, the sound is what I am after of course. Almost bought an Aventage, but wanted to stay with Anthem.

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  10 місяців тому

      Fair point. Having my first Ho-Fi experiences with the Marantz 2075 which was all analog and no remote, I still use the physical volume knob and judge as part of the quality. However, you are right, the most important criteria is how it sounds. That’s for that more universal perspective.-Jon

    Yamaha has always been a solid performer in the AV receiver market. Great idea on the motion back light for the remote. Wish our McIntosh MX123 remote had this rather than just the push button on the side. Is it an LED backlight Jon?

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  10 місяців тому +1

      I really like the motion back light. The button on the side of new Marantz remote is the next best thing. I don't like searching for the button on the remote. The Arcam I an testing just turns on the back light when you press any button, but I get nervous about what button I am pushing to turn the back light on. -Jon

    Hi Jon, thanks for another great review. I see in the specs that these models aren't 4 ohm capable for all channels driven unlike all their competitors. All my speakers are 4 ohm but will be setting them up in a small room. Should I look elsewhere?

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  6 місяців тому +1

      Yours is a good question. Yamaha claims compatibility with speakers "at least 4 ohm" with their latest receiver series. While their reported specifications only list 4 ohm ratings at 1 channel driven, that alone doesn't mean that it won't handle loads with 100% 4 ohm rated speakers. I did not find any warning not to use that configuration, so my guess you are fine. With that said, I find it odd they don't provide 4 ohm ratings as part of their reports 2-channels driven specification, but they don't report any measurement over 2 channels driven. It seems they are playing the specification game to position their receivers with the largest competitors who are selling 140-150W receivers. We can assume that the true all channels rating is a bit lower and less favorable for their marketing. -Jon

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  6 місяців тому +1

      If Yamaha is saying that, then I would stay clear. I wish they would provide that warning in their documentation. I do not have access to Yamaha beyond the standard support line, so I would likely receive the same response. Very disappointing. -Jon

      Great feedback. I haven’t played around with remote IR receivers too much. I have used with a Harmony remote. I think the key is the specification or range and angle.
      It seems there is a rush to move to webpages and mobile apps in place of on screen displays. Functionally, there are benefits, but I don’t want to loss OSD in the process. There is still a need.
      I am not sure I could pull off another video on this Yamaha as I don’t have mine any longer. I cycle these in and out and only keep my Emotiva and Marantz units full time. However, good idea to put together a quick-start like video for each model I review. -Jon

      You are wrong. It is still valid because Yamaha has a 10year cycle. And just because D&M release a product every year with virtually no updates and market it like the iPhone doesn't mean you are getting anything new.
