  • Yamaha's latest generation of AVENTAGE receivers have updated YPAO (Yamaha Parametric room Acoustic Optimizer) with their new Low Frequency mode that finds the problematic room bass modal frequencies so you can go and manually adjust the PEQ filters to flatten out the bass and improve the response. In this video, I go over my calibration results with in-room REW acoustical measurements and listening results. I offer suggestion tips and tweaks of YPAO to get the best sound out of your home theater. There are some critical settings I suggest that can make or break the calibration results so you'll want to pay close attention to try these out in your system.

That's good to hear! Although without context it's hard to gauge whether that's good or not. Like your results look good but without comparison to XT32, Dirac, or Anthem ARC in the same room/speakers it's hard to say yeah that's doing on par or better or worse job. Appreciate the video!

Amazing work as usual... Thank you very much for such a detailed analysis.
About my own experience with a RX-A8A, I find the stage way wider with YPAO correction (flat) while in stereo or Auro-3D upmixing.
I also noticed that it's very sensitive to speaker placement : at some point, after cleaning the room, I think I didn't put back the speakers exactly in the exact same spot and was disappointed by the sound. Ran YPAO and magic was back, wider stage, better separation/spread...
Purely based on earing experience, so totally subjective and not scientifically measured.

Thank you again. I was going to mess around wirh an rxa aventage 1080 I got for a really good price. There were a lot of concerns about the amp measurements and YAPO on another site but I feel much better that the software at least handles some low frequencies and set the distances accurately.. I currently am running Denon which I owe you a big thanks for your tutorial on Audessy with the Greek guy (Theo?). Holy cow changing the curtain and limiting the Multeq-x app to correct just the first reflections made a world of difference.

I really like using the A6A PEQs and doing it exactly as you described. Running ypao, then copying flat results into PEQs and start finetuning on my own with REW control measurement. Sure, it takes some hours, when applying for all Channels, but thanks to new web interface and much more selectable frequencies it can be nearly used as a Minidsp. Thumbs up Yamaha.

I just got this receiver to replace an old, broken Pioneer Elite. I am using 5 Rocket speakers & a Velodyne digital sub. Haven't even completed YPAO yet, but it already sounds great so far. The sound can be very subtle & delicate, or in your face bold. The lighted remote is pretty awesome & quite heavy! Input changes respond quickly. A very, very nice receiver that I picked up new for $1600. Besides my motorcycle, this was my 1st Yamaha!

Hey Gene. Great video. I've had the A8A for a couple of months now. I couldn't agree more with you on YPAO. I got excellent results, with only some minor tweaks on sub level and rear surround levels for my taste. The YPAO speaker distance measurements were spot on! It's pretty amazing. I have a laser measurement tool and the measurements were exact with YPAO. My previous receiver was a Pioneer Elite (SC-77), and I gave up on it's room correction tool. I got much better results by ear (and my laser measurement tool). I also love the sound of the A8A. I chose this A/V primarily because of how pleased I am with the Yamaha A-S 2200 in my home offices. I love the warm sound. I guess I'm a Yamaha fan boy! :)

I just picked up a brand new A8A for 2500. Planning to use it in a 7.1.4 setup in my large 700sq ft open floor living space, that has windows and 9 ft ceilings. I am hoping that this YPAO correction software does the job. I keep getting told to sell this Yamaha and get a Denon 4800 which is the new generation that just come out, the units should ship next month. It has Audyssey and in a future update will have Dirac. It also allows you to shut down each amp channel. I'm guessing that allows it to reserve all power for other channels. Unlike our Yamaha that when you use preouts I'm being told the remaining onboard channels do not get the extra power in the amp.
So anyway I got an amazing deal and want this unit to work. Just wanted to get your thoughts on your unit, if you've had any issues at all, any arguments on why I should keep this unit, etc.

@@LichaelMewis great price on the A8A ! I like YPAO. I also like to manually tweak the sound. I’ve had no issues with my A8A. I currently have a 7.1 setup in my theater. Will soon be adding 4 presence speakers for a 7.1.4. I love the “Yamaha sound”. Last week, I purchased the A4A for my bedroom. It’s a 5.1 surround setup, so the A4A is perfect, and allows for a 5.1.2 setup if I want to grow. Amazon had the A4A for $1149, which was a great price. I couldn’t resist! So, as you might guess, I’m going to recommend Yamaha. However, you can’t go wrong with Denon, either. Good luck with your decision!

Hi Gene, great stuff - professional information but also understandable for non-pro‘s! One specific question which came to my mind regarding YPAO: if frequency response correction are done only rarely by the automatic system, how does it perform in terms of timbre matching the speakers e.g. Front vs. Surround? I mean even my well treated theatre room is not perfectly symmetric which leads to some timbre differences between speakers.
    Best regards,
    Christian

  • @SwirlingDragonMist

Looks like a great tool, I’ve found anecdotally with manual EQ tuned by ear, that often when you cut the midbass, the lower bass has better performance. Which may explain that boost you observed.
My theory is that since all bass including the midbass takes a significant amount of energy, cutting some of it provides more headroom for the lower end. While also reducing distortions from the driver doing less.
I’ve used this technique in nearly every system I’ve had, and I consistently get smoother deeper bass as a result. It really lifts that -6db point.
Basically you boost the lowest eq band, and then cut the second lowest. Typically on my EQ’s in which I find 5 bands ideal. The lowest 30hz band I set at 7/10 (5/10 being middle) then the second lowest usually 250hz, I cut way down to 2/10. Then the remaining 1khz at 5/10 3.5k also at 5/10, and the highest 10khz depends on the sibilance of the system, but usually I cut it too as a matter of preference.
I find FM radio hiss to dwell in the 10khz band, so cutting it has a huge impact on the noise floor. People may roll their eyes at FM but my local station doesn’t have adds, plays records and has an analogue transmitter, so it’s all analogue baby ha ha ha but mostly I like FM because it’s instantly on.
Shoutout to 96khz sampling rate for the room correction ;) It may not be 24bit 192khz, but then again most streaming libraries are still CD quality.

Hi Gene. Thanks for that, it was quite informative. One question though - when I run ypaou more than once (in different listening positions as you indicated) does the calibration mix each of those readings, and if so, how do we start from scratch? By the way, I too would prefer less interference from all the gadgetry when listening to music. Nothing seems to beat a (fairly) straight line from the song to the speakers!

It set my 7 bed layer and 2 height speakers as Large with the crossover at 40Hz, with the distances way off, and the levels all over the place... so I just bought SPL meter and set everything myself and the results were way better. Needless to say I did not use the EQ at all, because of how bad the Calibration was.

    Great video, Gene!
I would like to see a comparison with a Dirac Live / Audissey unit.
I recently bought an Onkyo AV Receiver, and all of those who didn't support Dirac Live were immediately excluded from my shopping list.
While I don't disagree that with great loudspeakers and in a good sounding room correcting mid/high frequencies can be detrimental (even with a less than "perfect" speaker, it may have the kind of sound that the listener loves), I believe that achieving those conditions is rarely easy. 😉
I kind of have it (I stopped half way), but aí found out that I'd rather have a greater balance between sound and aesthetics (that's where good room correction software comes in). 😉
Most high end monitors (which measure great on anechoic chambers on several fronts) include DSP with room calibration, because it's a proven fact that every studio sounds different from each other - no matter how good the sound treatment is, and using the same monitor make and models.
Some of the Atmos tracks that you hear were likely mixed on monitoring systems with room correction, so it doesn't "shock me" if I have to make the same thing on a regular living room. 🙂
These AVRs are still consumer products (not professional ones), and today, they're able to do things (sound wise) that were nearly impossible not that long ago. 😉
It's great to know that Yamaha is stepping up their game in the room correction side of things, but comparing it with the current references in room correction software seems a bit unavoidable to me.
    Thank you. 🙂

Ya know what I like about the Yamaha receivers I’ve had. The reverb DSP modes like hall, arena, etc. I really honestly enjoyed playing with those during my listening, and I also miss orange as an accent color.
I don’t know why orange went out of vogue, maybe a toxicity thing killed by Rohs compliance, which I can totally sympathize with as being important for all of us. Blue was an elusive color for a while, so maybe just the fact that the blue led was invented later than other leds is why it became the defacto new cutting edge color. Maybe some stylistic synergy with Blu-Rays too. But blue always strikes me as too intense, I don’t like it. The blue/green “Midori” color of yesteryear’s phosphorescent displays was nice, but something about leds is just very harsh in the blue spectrum, it’s almost like UV. If we could bring back the warmth of orange, I would be so down.

    Hello,
I have an A4A and have it setup with a 4.1 configuration: One RSL Speedwoofer, two front JBL Studio 230's, and two rear JBL 306p mkiis. When running YPAO it marked both pairs of speakers as "large" and set a -10db level for the sub. Now the sub doesn't kick on unless I have my volume cranked to unreasonable levels.
It seems YPAO got the parametric EQ correct as well as the distances (including the delay from the wireless SVS transmitter I'm using for the rears) but I want to actually hear my subwoofer at normal listening levels. Do you recommend manually setting my speakers to small or using extra bass with the YPAO Flat curve?

  • @rolandrohde
    @rolandrohde 3 місяці тому

One thing to keep in mind when doing manual EQ is, that as soon as you add more than on sub, things get very complicated. Manual EQ for two subs is doable, but I found it to be more trial and error than anything else.
That being said...I am starting to get a bit frisky...have been running my Denon X6700 for a few years now and was finally happy with the auto-eq after Audyssey provided the MultEQ-X addition, and am very unsure where to go from here. AVRs have become even more expensive these days, and there really doesn't appear to be much ou there that is actually improved. The Denon 6800 doesn't offer anything that the 6700 doesn't already have, apart from more stable HDMI 2.1 and the A8A has been on the market for a while now and I don't know how much support in terms of Updates it is going to get.
I really liked Surround:AI on the RX-A3080 but felt that Yamaha didn't really spend much effort on improving it after the initial launch...

I have a question. As my speakers are about 3 feet away from me, how far should I move the mic from the center if I'm the only one with a single chair? About 1 foot away from the center? I have a computer with a TV close to me. My TV is arm-mounted and it mounts to my desk. My 42" TV is about a couple of inches away from my right eye and I'm blind in my left eye. And yeah even though I use a full-screen magnifier, I can see well enough to operate my home theater equipment. I only have just a 4.1 surround sound system and my Denon X3400H downmixes 5.1 to 4.1. It just simply sends center channel to my JBL A180 floorstanding speakers (recently purchased). I have an Insignia NS-B2111 speakers for surrounds (2008-ish) and Klipsch RP-1000SW subwoofer. I'm planning on replacing my Insignia speakers with JBL Stage A130 in order to match with my Stage A180 speakers. Back in 2015 or 2016, I once had my Polk T50 floorstanding speakers to replace my front NS-B2111 speakers. So it's all part of my home theater journey.
I had to set my floorstanding speakers' crossover frequency at 80Hz because when I watch Tomorrowland where Frank Walker drops Athena down to the big sphere "monitor" (I apologize for the spoilers), the explosion sounded like pops or distortion at reference volume, so I had to set the crossover at 80Hz and the pops are gone. So much for my floorstanding speakers at 40Hz or 60Hz... Oh, well. But the movie sounds great at reference anyway. I just need to get me a dedicated 2-channel amp for my front speakers that are rated at 6 ohms. Of course, I did look for impedence graphs online and I have see some frequencies drop below 5 ohms around 150hz or so which is a bit concerning for me, but no problems so far.
Thanks for the video about Yamaha's YPAO. I might check out Onkyo TX-RZ50 with Onkyo Accu EQ or DIRAC although I do want an AVR receiver that sacrifices features for sound quality. I just don't have a need for streaming services built into the receiver. My Linux computer is my "network streamer." :)

  • @markfischer3626
    @markfischer3626 2 роки тому +1

Lots of problems. One problem with EQ in general is that given system design EQ alters both the direct and reflected sound at the same time. Most modern speakers really have miserable off axis treble response so the top octave or two gives almost no reflections. Pulling speakers away from walls and other reflecting surfaces reduces mid frequency reflections to compensate but the price for narrowly focused high frequencies is that as soon as you move off axis the high frequencies even directly from the speaker fall off drastically. This is why you need to adjust your toe in with a micrometer and sit at a sweet spot. No musical instruments propagate sound this way. This is done deliberately to improve "imaging' and "sound stage" at the cost of tonal accuracy.
Bass is always a problem. Roy Alison and Dr. Floyd Toole did a lot of research on how bass couples to rooms and Alison also did a lot of research on eliminating the typical suckout at around 200 hz. These graphs in this posting are not the typical smoothed out responses but show much more detail. The result is what looks very much like a great deal of comb filtering with the span between peaks and dips as great as 15 db.
Finally there's the problem of differences in spectral balance of bass in recordings. Look at the low frequency curves in the Fletcher Munson graphs.
    www.google.com/search?q=fletcher+munson+equal+loudness+contours&sxsrf=ALiCzsZ_ui7phaP6K5Y964t98ztQi_O85Q:1652120535699&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi2_p7NhNP3AhWlhIkEHeQeBdgQ_AUoAXoECAEQAw&biw=1536&bih=723&dpr=1.25
The scale on the left is actual loudness. The scale on the bottom is frequency. The curves show perceived equal loudness as a function of actual loudness at different frequencies. Notice how the curves are squashed together at low frequencies. What this means is that up until the lowest curve which is the threshold of sound, the softest you can hear, you hear nothing. Then once you get there each small incremental increase in real loudness has a very large change in perception of loudness compared to higher frequencies. This is why I find it necessary to adjust the bass for each individual recording very carefully to keep the spectral balance realistic. My experience is that the spectral balance of recordings at all frequencies is all over the map from one recording to another. This is why the first thing my electronics has to do is reconcile the difference between the spectral balance of each recording with the FR of my sound system.
One last observation. If you look at the curves that extend to 20 khz such as those at the top left be aware that the lowest curve is the softest sound you can hear at each frequency and the top curve is the threshold of pain where sound is so loud you experience it as pain, not sound. At 20 khz all of the curves go straight up so that the threshold of hearing crosses the threshold of pain so anyone who says they can hear anything above 20 khz, .... well just show them these graphs. So much for HD. BTW, MQA violates the Shannon Nyquist criteria by 400 percent. It's a solution that doesn't work for a problem that doesn't exist.

Being an engineer and curious about everything I had to know why I didn't like them and what if anything I could do about it. It took me four weeks to fix the bass and four years to fix the treble. It's now a two way biamplified system with 6 tweeters per channel. Like all of my systems it has to be designed and adjusted to the spot in the room it will occupy and also for each recording. It's now a full range system that works extremely well. Nevertheless I haven't heard them in over 4 years. I'm glued to my main ststem, one I invented, patented, and for me the best that exists. The original Bose 901 was an acoustic suspension design using 9 30 watt each acoustic suspension drivers. It had 3 serious frequency response flaws, two in the bass and one in the treble. No highs, no lows (except at ear shattering loudness.) There is a 7 db broad rise at about 250 hz. Bose said he wanted the system resonance frequency to be above 180 hz where he said phase shift at resonance would become inaudible (he got that wrong., it's not audible below 180 hz if Q is at critical damping.) But the system was underdamped. The output below resonance falls at 12 db per octave reaching the 1 khz output at around 95 hz and keeps falling but the equalizer only boosts output at 6 db per octave, not nearly enough. An extra 6db per octave boost flattens the response but power required to reach full potential jumps to 600 to 1000 wpc. Since the system is only rated at 270 wpc, four pairs in parallel driven by a Crown 2502 drive core amp would solve that problem, otherwise the full potential cannot be realized but deep bass to 40 hz will not overload my 138 wpc receiver. THD of the speaker at 30 hz is 10 percent which isn't bad (this is a critical measurement they don't publish usually.) Original AR1W and its derivatives by comparison was 5% which is why it became the world standard and eventually was reduced to 1%. It was so accurate medical schools used it to demonstrate different heart sounds to students.
The treble was the hard part. It was not expensive but it was difficult to get it right. A directional array of 6 3/8" poly tweeters, one forward, three back and two upfiring are crossed over with a single pole (6db per octave) capacitor at around 9 khz. They're driven by a separate 100 wpc receiver with its own equalizer so it's loafing. It's remarkable how little sound is needed in the top octave but every detail of it is critical. (I have exceptionally tough standards and my reference is live classical music. I do not want a Steinway piano to sound like a Baldwin or visa versa. and I have one Steinway and two Baldwins.) While these speakers can play any kind of music, the best a two channel system can do convincingly is to reproduce music of soloists and small ensembles as they would be heard in your listening room. Recreating concert hall acoustics is a much more complicated problem which I also solved and have been experimenting with for nearly 50 years. That's much more fun than 2 channel stereo.
