Making new friends, seeing Top Gun, falling in love for the first time. Enjoying my independence, but feeling joy when my family came to visit. My parents were still in their 50s and pretty healthy. My sister turned 18 and we enjoyed getting to know each other as adults. I won’t ever forget this day or the Challenger explosion.

The great thing about that period of time was that a movie like Ferris Bueller could be a big hit where as now, it'd probably tossed into obscurity on a streaming service with a bunch of other mostly bad to mediocre films. Sadly, if a film doesn't have CGI, it most likely won't get the type of marketing commercial films get.

NOT my favorite 1986 memory, but the Challenger explosion is my "Kennedy" moment, saw it real time on TV during lunch Sophmore year @ college, burned in my brain forever.
Me too. I was 17 at home skipping school. I was so upset I called my dad at work. He was a Captain in the Air Force. He was so somber and didn't even ask why I was home. Sad day!
I didn't get born until 93. But I understand what you mean with it being burned in your brain forever. I saw 9/11 on the TV in first grade and will never forget it.
My Kennedy moment was 9/11, I was a freshman in high school during biology class. Never forget how time seemed to stand still and everything froze for a day. My teacher wheeled in the classic tv strapped to the cart and we all just sat there glued to it, terrified and in shock.
I was born in late '79. The 80s was such an awesome time to be a kid...except for the Challenger. I remember our teacher telling us and all of us kids just bawling our eyes out. I was 6 years old.
I was in first grade. Class was watching Challenger, as many were. Our teacher calmly walked up and turned off the TV when the explosion occurred. She later explained what happened. I remember being so terrified. Also this: 18:11 Epic
This was absolutely one of the very best years of my life! I wasn’t expected to graduate high school because my grades were so close to failing. I had passed all my classes except for one (English) and my teacher said she wouldn’t tell me my grade and I would just have to wait and see at graduation if I would get my diploma or not. I sweated it out for days and was scared I wouldn’t graduate. So the day comes and it’s getting closer to my name and then finally they say my name. My mom shouted so loud in the auditorium “thank you Ms McKibben”! Sorry so long but that lead me into adulthood and so many things, good and bad, has happened since then. But that’s one day I will never forget. Thank you for a great video

I was 8.
Johnny Rottenpiss thank you so much for your reply. I listened to all kinds of music back then. As long as it wasn’t classical, opera or show tunes, I listened to it. It wasn’t until around 1988 that I was turned on to the newer metal like Metallica. I definitely remember the Sam Goody stores and the malls. I was ten in 1986...most memorable year of my childhood. No better time in the world to be a kid! I wish my kids were able to experience that kind of childhood. I feel sorry for kids now.
I was eleven that year, and was always SO bored. I dreamed of a day, far in the future, when I could get on my Commodore computer and look up information on any topic that interested me... The only good thing about growing up in the '80s was being a young adult(and musician) in the '90s.
@José Menendéz Come on. Are we living in the same world by any chance? The youth is getting indoctrinated with ideologies like critical race theory and gender studies who's consequences we are living through right now. Not only is it unscientific garbage but also causes more division than there has been in a long time. The US is on the brink of civil war because of it. I was in Kindergarten. I remember watching the explosion on the news at my grandparents' house. Later that week, my teacher took us on a tour of the school and we looked at artwork done by older kids in memory of Challenger and it's crew.
I was in first grade as well and our teachers also started crying. That's how I confirmed that something terrible had just happened. So weird how so many of us experienced it the same way.
I was in the 1st grade in 1986 and grades 1-3 gathered in our classroom to watch the Challenger launch. I was very confused when it exploded, there was complete silence and the teachers tried to figure out what to do. It's true, anyone old enough in 1986 remembers that moment.

Indeed!!
And don't forget, in 1986 Somewhere in Time was released! One of the best albums of all time.
Thank you!! The best album of 86!!
Also Master of Puppets and Reign in Blood

The year I was born. Wish I could experience more of the 80's. Such a fantastic decade!
This is one of the best channels I've ever subscribed to and Timeline is the most interesting series I've seen in years. Keep up the great work!!!!
You know what I realized in the 80s every year was a good year for movies 🎞📽🎟
The great thing about that period of time was that a movie like Ferris Bueller could be a big hit where as now, it'd probably tossed into obscurity on a streaming service with a bunch of other mostly bad to mediocre films. Sadly, if a film doesn't have CGI, it most likely won't get the type of marketing commercial films get.
American culture slowly died off in the 90's.
This series is a big win can’t wait to see what’s next
I can't get enough of these. My daughter just asked what I'm watching because I kept saying "No way!" and "Wow" every couple of minutes
I was in second grade when the challenger tragedy happened. We had recess all day and didn't understand why. Then they did the Punky Brewster episode.
Okay. I have checked on my computer at work. The video is screwing up @ the 5:06 mark. Where the Zelda commercial shows up (or rather doesn't). From there the audio is completely off & the video is unwatchable. This doesn't seem to happen on my phone, so I'm not sure what's going on exactly, but a reupload is probably in order. Thanks guys.
Honorable Mentions: Platoon, Blue Velvet, Big trouble in Little China, The fly
Life is like a box of chocolates.
The Fly most definitely!!
@Interesting Fives Thanks, man
After 1989, do the 90s please...
What about the seventies(yes do 90s after 80s)
@@HighSockDavid that as well
Burleon there is a reason the 90s is called the forgotten decade
@Burleon yeah, but the 90s were forgotten by most people. So we need to look back to the 90s to see what really happened on that decade.
@@HighSockDavid yes, the prequel to the 80s and 90s.
4:30 I remember in fourth grade, my clarinet teacher was talking about The program that he applied for under NASA. I think he said he was part of the final selection and he was chosen as a secondary on that mission in case someone dropped out for whatever reason. If he wasn't lying he dodged a bullet that day.
I was in 3rd grade but the teacher the grade above in 4th was one of the ones in the final runnings as well. The whole school was excited for her....then we saw it live....all excitement of the whole thing was quickly gone. Such a sad day in my childhood....RIP to them all

I’m really looking forward to these videos! Thank you so much for putting this series together! I love it!
Yep I remember Hands Across America there was a lot of gaps. We were driving on the Westside of Columbus Ohio on the freeway and from the freeway we can see people holding hands down on the street.
So I assume you are from Leola? Maybe?? ... I am not but dated a girl from there in the early 90's,
I was raised in Grant county though, ...

Do you believe it would ever happen again? Just asking for a personal opinion. I heard the term "hands across america" in ways to poke fun but I wonder of unity will ever really be a thing in such a way
A shame this video went sideways so early. Looks like the Legend of Zelda ad got edited in wrong. Oh well. What can ya do? Great series!!
Is it just me or is the audio out of sync with the visuals?
The most memorable part of 1986 for me was the premiere of "The Transformers: The Movie". Still the best Transformers movie ever made! Optimus Prime's death was one of the saddest days for me.
Is that the animated movie? Still better than micheal bay.

I went to see it it with my dad, siblings and 2 cousins for my 11th birthday! We lost our minds that day!
I was hearing that uranus joke in my head before you said it.
How is the Star Trek Enterprise like toilet paper? They both circle Uranus and look for Klingons.
I was saying the joke as a kid the day it was announced.

Shame that the video becomes unwatchable after it gets out of sync. Been binging these videos today after finding them out.
I love these 80's Timeline videos. I was 9 years old in 1980 to my high school graduation in 1989. They were my formative years. It's pretty wild.

Y'all need to clean up your video - your clips are all out of place
Yeah I thought something was wrong with my phone for a second
Yeah this is really bad. Started off great. They are 45 second behind on all clips. Couldn’t continue to watch. Ruined it.
It is still off.
It wasn't always like this. I guess some audio clips were removed and everything after it was pushed up. Maybe a youtube glitch?
i cant even finish watching it, how do you not fix and reupload this
Another great job on this one. this is definitely making me miss and love the 80's If you have time I would love a 90's version and also a full video on the Night Stalker. Thank you again for the hard work put into this and I love you brother

80s & 90s were the most transformative years for the American culture & world
@@darealberrygarcia Precisely the point, because I've always been somewhat curious about the decade that preceded and set up the 80s to be what they were!
E.g, 70s Disco music paved the way for a great deal of music genres that were popular in the 80s.

Type in Challenger crew still alive

That year the comet of Halley was visible.
We will have to wait until 2061 to see it back.
Yeah, that should have been in this video!
The intro music is just about right for this video and a couple of others lol
Fantastic story!

@@sassykaren7587 This is a year I vividly remember. My oldest brother graduated high school. And I graduated from Bon Jovi "Slippery When Wet" to Metallica's "Master of Puppets" when another one of my brothers brought it home from his job at the record store in the mall (remember malls and record stores?).
Back then going and hanging out at the mall or arcade were our social networking. We didn’t need a cell phone back then but now it’s so strange because it’s like we can’t live without it. I hope you have a wonderful day 👍
@@sassykaren7587 1988 was the year I discovered Led Zeppelin when I was helping a lady set up for a garage sale and she let me go through her college-aged daughter's record collection and take what I wanted. Led Zeppelin "IV" and Black Sabbath "Paranoid" were two specific albums I took. As soon as I heard those albums, I knew I wanted to play guitar (though I was relegated to singer/harmonica/keyboards in my first rock bands).
Also, I appreciate you delightful responses. It's nice to interact on UA-cam with someone other than hostile trolls that just try to incite. So, thank you for that.
I was ten in 1986...most memorable year of my childhood. No better time in the world to be a kid! I wish my kids were able to experience that kind of childhood. I feel sorry for kids now.
I blame social media and downward spiral of moral and ethics in our society.
I was eleven that year, and was always SO bored. I dreamed of a day, far in the future, when I could get on my Commodore computer and look up information on any topic that interested me... The only good thing about growing up in the '80s was being a young adult(and musician) in the '90s.
For real. I try so hard to give my kid an 80s childhood, but the world gets in the way. Luckily he loves 80s movies and TV shows.
I was 10 as well!!! Best memories
People being silenced, canceled, smeared into silence all in the name of social justice and all because of the inability of people to use their own f'in brains. I wouldn't bring a child into this madness even if i was offered 100 millions to do it and i pity anyone that has to grow up in some of our current societies.

I'll never forget watching Challenger explode; the part that haunted me the most was watching my first grade teacher break down into tears.
I was in the first grade, too. I didn't understand what was going on (I guess I thought that spaceshuttles were suppose to explode, idk, I wasn''t the brightest kid), but I knew something was bad because our teachers were crying.
Very informative ty. I rly enjoyed this.
I was in the 1st grade in 1986 and grades 1-3 gathered in our classroom to watch the Challenger launch. I was very confused when it exploded, there was complete silence and the teachers tried to figure out what to do. It's true, anyone old enough in 1986 remembers that moment.
