  • Let's look back at 1981 - In this video Weird History is going to talk about the news, culture, sports, and entertainment, and all that was weird in the year 1981. 1981 would be a year filled with deadly events, including attempts on Ronald Reagan as well as Pope John Paul II, we would also see high-profile marriages, Lady Di and Prince Charles as well as General Hospital's Luke and Laura and the emergence of the video game with the debut of Donkey Kong.

    I remember 1981 all too well. My parents’ divorce was finalized 2 1/2 months before my 18th birthday/their would-be 20th wedding anniversary (yes, same day). Nothing like having your mom painfully weeping on what would have been her wedding anniversary while “celebrating” turning 18. As birthdays go, it was memorable for all the wrong reasons. Two months later, I graduated.
    Three months after that, my grandfather succumbed to his cancer, just as I was to start college. I couldn’t go to his funeral because Mom couldn’t afford a plane ticket to NC *and* my first semester at the U. When I cried, she looked at me and asked which thing Grandpa would want the money spent on, going to college or a flight to his funeral. Grandpa had a master’s degree. He’d have chewed me, probably in Italian, if I didn’t start school. I didn’t visit his grave until 3 years later when Mom flew me to NC to spend spring break with Grandma. She told me then that Grandpa would have fully understood and been very proud of me. (She too had a college degree and would pass away 32 years later at 107.)

      Brantley Hester, every word of it. (Dad was the one who asked for the divorce when I was a junior.).
      The last time I saw my grandpa was over Easter break that year when we (Dad, his future wife, her twin daughters, my sister and I) drove down from Minnesota to NC in a family friend’s RV. The starter or something in its vicinity had a bad wire that when it got warm and expanded would short the system and stop the vehicle until it cooled off again. Nothing like being repeatedly pulled over on the outside of the road, either on interstate freeways or overlooking deep ravines in the Smoky Mountains, as large semis blow past you and while your younger sisters are up top working on their tans. It actually died in the major intersection a couple of blocks from Grandpa and Grandma’s house. I was the one sent to go tell them where we were. Fortunately Grandpa was well known and loved in the neighborhood and knew a mechanic who could help.

    It was the beginning of an awesome decade with some of the best music and movies ever to come out. Most modern movies, shows and tv commercials always reference something from the 80s, whether it be a movie or a song from the 80s. And if love each episode to be 60 minutes with the beginning and ending episodes of each decade being 90 minutes long. This would make amazing money on a bigger level. And it needs some good promotion! You've really got something here. So simple. But so entertaining and informative. And most of all, nostalgic. These days, nostalgia is selling like crazy.

    I own a DMC-12 DeLorean. I really appreciate that the video just talked about its significance without making any lame jokes. Most people don't know it, but the project was built in Northern Ireland and was meant to help reduce the sectarian violence of The Troubles by getting Protestants and Catholics to work together, and for awhile, it helped somewhat by giving people well-paying jobs and showing people (mostly young men who might otherwise be drawn to the paramilitary organizations) that they were better off together than divided. Classy move not just making time travel and cocaine jokes - that's rare. Cheers.

    • @MomMom4Cubs
      @MomMom4Cubs 4 роки тому +3

      I believe the DeLorean plant was the single largest contributor to the Good Friday Agreement becoming a reality. Without such, no one would have any reason to believe peace could come and stay in N. Ireland.
      RIP, Mr. DeLorean.

    •  4 роки тому

      john De lorean was involved in a huge cocaine scandal back in the 80's. his wife divorced him and he went to jail. that is why there are so many cocaine jokes linked to that car. if that had not happened it may of held some popularity.

    • @danieloconnell4225

      I drive one too Daniel, and I have had only one heckler in my time. The rest all want to have thier picture taken with it, ask if it's hard to get parts for. How fast does it go, etc. The only jokes I get are the harmless ones about flux capacitors, and what happens when it gets to 88 MPH!

    • @MomMom4Cubs
      @MomMom4Cubs 4 роки тому

      @ It didn't help that there was a recession in the U.S., and the car equalled, if not exceeded, the mortgages of many Americans. Another causative factor was the men that assembled the car had absolutely zero experience assembling anything, let alone passenger vehicles that could pass the myriad standards for safety, emissions and fuel economy.
      Those factors, coupled with the U.K. calling their loan and SEVERELY rushed production schedule, was the downfall of DeLorean. The trials and subsequent scandals were after the failure of DMC.

    Bob Marley's passing I remember so well. On his funeral, which was a clear day, thunder was heard.
    I also wonder if that Pulitzer 'winning' reporter's story was considered for film?

    It's interesting to see how many breakthroughs, crazy events and changes happened in the 80s and compare them to this year. Basically everything that's happening has its roots in the Reagan administration and the culture of conspicuous consumption.

    I think it’s amazing you watch anything regarding early 80’s they mention sports but nothing of the islanders and the 4 cups in a row. They are truly a forgotten dynasty

    1st generation Hip Hop born in the late 70's was NYC local music only and gained global notoriety in the 80's! It's a major part of music history especially in the 80's...
    Please don't forget this part of history in the 80's. Great video. Thanks!
