    It's an honor to watch you work, Del. I'm blown away by your attention to detail and the fact that you won't accept anything short of perfection. This series should be required watching for HD dealer mechanics. Huge thanks to you and Penny. 🙂

      Wow, thank you Rick for such words of kind and generous support... we put so much in to this, making the content is a full time job whilst we still have day jobs at the same time, so to know it's appreciated so much makes it all worthwhile... it would take me maybe a third of the time to do the work quietly by myself off camera, but filming all the angles and aspects of the work at least doubles the time and the post-production doubles that again... a 10min video is often a 12hr day at least by the time it's online... so thank you so much for your kind words.

    Awesome episode. Circlips falling into the engine or sproinging off into the 9th dimension never to be seen again, has always been a real terror for me personally. Being able to sit comfortably with a cup of tea watching vicariously, still produces a bit of nervousness though! hee hee

      It's almost like they're designed specifically to do that. I swear I've had more circlips fly across the room than come off easily 😂 That and springs deciding to explode everywhere if you don't expect them to be there.

    nice one Del, was just thinking when you put the heads on then realise you forgot to put one of the head gaskets on as you look over at the bench.. LOL all good though :-) I think what would be a tiny/good idea is make an on purpose mistake then get ppl to ask in the comments what they think it is/was! then reveal in the next episodes :) "did you spot the mistake" kinda thing, eg not put the gudgeon pin retainer in.. keep us on our toes :) and also helps people make sure they do things in order and correctly.. like you do :)

    I remember back in the day, stripping the cylinders off an 883. Dropped everything off and left the pistons in situ. Comes the time to drop the cylinders back on… pissed about for what seemed hours trying to get the pistons back in. 20 fags and many coffees later, a mate suggested taking the pistons off and housing them as you did here. It just seemed like so much work with no guarantees. Anyway, did as he suggested, straight in, on, job done. Lesson learned, all be it the hard way. Good job brother, really coming along!

Hope you're both keeping safe and well.

    Hello Delboy, My book shows a bore of 3 inches for the 883, the stroke of 3.812 being same
    for the 1200, so increasing the bore by very close to half an inch willincrease compression?
    Speed? I don't know if torque would be increased, it seems the longer the stroke the more
    torque as the farther/further away from the crankshaft you go the more leverage you have ?
    or is it possible to get more torque with a larger bore?/ Got Delboys coffee cup Thursday, I
    use it at my puter desk for pens and small bits of harware found in pockets b4 I do laundery.
    I hope you made a few bob or pounds on that! It seems many Harley's have an S&S air cleaner
    and post have S&S carbs too. going on ten yrs with my Sporty only 1ce did I have an issue with
    the carb, did not want to idle. otherwise top notch on the hi-way. a few oz of Seafoam in 2
    gal of gaz and 2 Coors (Beers) later, running like a charm.

      You're so right brother, it's real easy for the budget to run away like a forest fire!... I priced up Andrews cams and SE cylinder heads and with the relevant big more carb I'd need too it came to more than the price of an S&S crate motor, so I just decided to cut the cloth at pistons and barrels only, which will give me a motor that's pretty much the same as a factory 1200, but with a little more torque as these are high comp pistons and obviously the lowering gearing in the primary, so should be a good fun bike to ride, especially in the dirt ha ha! Do you have to make any other changes to internal components like camshaft valves crankshaft etc etc when you fit a big bore kit. What about fuelling does that need to be retuned

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  2 роки тому

      Rather wonderfully with Harleys, you can just simply slap in the bigger pistons and deal with the fueling and that's usually no more than a re-jet on the carb or a re-flash on the fuel injection map... you can change cams if you want even more power, but the bottom end of any Harley can take incredible amounts of extra tuning, even turbos, they're immensely strong!

    Just got a brief glimpse of the cross hatching at least you didn't have to do that Del. Took a bit of spotting, fine workmanship will you be lapping in the valves and using Seafoam to clean the carbon off in the head if you are not planning on upgrading anything? Absolutely love those piston crowns you could eat your cakes off them aye.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  2 роки тому +1

      Hello Mark, this engine is remarkably good internally, and there's no need to make unnecessary work for myself, I've dropped out the cams, followers and primary for inspection and even the clutch was like new, so won't need to pull the heads apart, just going to take some time to clean up the gasket faces meticulously in the next video, and then simply re-assemble the top end... it's fine as it is, and if the cart ain't broke, don't fix it aye?! Have a blessed week, ride safe!

      @@Moonfleet41 nice one Del looking forward to the next thrilling instalment.
      My bike however isn't really up to scratch as I am off the road (ride safe) as I or rather my sister has bailed me out and gave me the money needed to get the things needed to make my bike reliable.

    Why didn't you just bore the seasoned cylinders to fit the larger pistons ?
    The money saved could have been used towards a valve job, cams or both.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  2 роки тому

      Sadly not Kurt, by the time we've bought pistons and then all the gaskets separately, it adds up to pretty much the same money... 'kits' are always a good option as everything is thrown in at a price... and yes, I did check first and literally less than £100 difference.

    Quick question, why would S&S not send the piston rings with the correct gaps? They machined the cylinders and pistons, would the gap be different for different bikes?

      Indeed, much of the time they're fine, and the difference is maybe 5 thou at most.. it's just critical to get right, so it's correct practice to always check them for yourself.. !

    Hi del , is there a front and back cylinder or are they the same , and you said about the gearing on the primary drive but are the gearbox the same , theres a few channels turning these into off road bikes , interesting to see what you do with this , got me hooked on this build take care

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  2 роки тому

      Pretty much everything accept the primary front sprocket was the same on the two models back on these bikes, so you end up with slightly lower gearing overall, and im fitting a chain and sprockets too eventually, so it should be a great bike to ride.
