I have lost over 50 pounds and reversed heart issues. A plant based lifestyle has totally changed my life and brought back my health, energy and vitality! The journey all started when I watched the movie Forks Over Knives - to get your own copy of this life changing dvd, visit my affiliate page on Amazon if interested at amzn.to/1MgHoDy And I also read The China Study: amzn.to/1MgHsDt
Try dehydrated potato flakes next time! Works like a charm--it incorporates almost instantly with no lumps.
Same amount as the rice flour? Thanks
@@ckveggie6006 Honestly, I just pour some in a bit at a time until it seems thick enough.
Thanks for the tip!
Good idea!
What about potato starch?
I like to add a few tablespoons of the hot broth to the flour first, make it into a paste, and then add it to the rest if the broth. It gets rid of the risk of lumps!
Me too. Isn’t it called a roux ? Anyway it avoids lumps 👍
@@lizziedripping71 not roux, slurry. And it really gets rid of lumps 🤗
@@lizziedripping71 a roux is a mixture of flour and butter.
Oh my!! I made this just now and it’s absolutely delicious!! I sautéed onions and mushrooms added garlic powder, sage, thyme celery salt. My new favorite
Fantastic! So happy to hear that!
I add dried mushrooms that I buy in Chinese grocer and run them through the blender to get a really rich flavour. Thanks for sharing, healthy vegan recipes. I keep coming back to your channel.
I just made this for the first time and I am in heaven! I have missed gravy soooo much! I had to make it with gluten free flour and it still turned out so yummy, thank you so much!
I avoid lumps in gravies and sauces by adding the flour or other thickener into a portion of the liquid being used . . making a past . . then drizzle the paste into the simmering remaining liquid . . stir constantly, Works great.
Ok I haven't checked this out. But my mom use to make gravy with flour...however, in order to stop lumps from forming, she would mix the flour with liquid that is cold, and then add to the hot.
My husband and I recently switched to the WFPBSOS Free way of eating and this is the first gravy I have tried. I was prepared to not like it as is the case with many foods now (still waiting for my taste buds to catch up!), but I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was! My husband even said it was a winner. It was so nice to finally have gravy! Thank you for sharing this recipe!
What does SOS in your acronym stand for?
@@debbiepowers4743 Salt, Oil, & Sugar Free
I just made this tonight! It was awesome with our brown rice that I cooked! YUM YUM YUM! Definitely a keeper for me! I just watched Forks over Knives today......a true eye opener for sure. I am changing my eating habits NOW.
Denise Finochiaro awesome!
Nice work. I like to add the flour to cold water so it doesn't clump or blend in magic bullet before putting in pot.
Thanks for the tips Will :-)
Thanks was following this recipe and spotted your tip. Worked really well! 😀👍
I learned from my mother to shake whatever starch I am using for thickener in a jar and whisk it in. It turns out smooth and lovely. This is a nice recipe to add to our list!
+m.s. mary I usually do that too :-)
anytime I make gravy, I put all the ingredients and the liquid together in a shaker bottle, shake, then slowly add to the pot and stir. works wonderfully.
I blend all the Ingridients in my ninja cup to get it completely smooth, then put it on the heat to reduce down and thicken. Great video! Thanks.
I incorporated some of the fluid to a bowl of rice flower and added it all in before the boil to get rid of any lumps. This turned out great - thanks for this video and for it being so short xx
Sounds great!
@@cookingwithplants is corn starch a good thickener as well, Ma'am?
or do you recommend against it?
Mmmmmmm. I need to try this. I’ve been wanting some gravy but I don’t want to regret it. Thanks!
Hi thank you so much for this video... I made this for the first time yesterday and I am still in shock at how good this gravy taste. I have been eating it since yesterday and absolutely in love with this recipe. So happy to have gravy to pour over some of my food now :-)
You Won't Have Lumps If You Mix The Rice Flour Into About A Half Cup of Cold Water With A Fork, Then Add To The Boiling Mixture. Works Every Time! Can't Wait To Try This!
mmm just add some sliced mushrooms for a lovely mushroom gravy.. can't wait to try it. Thanks for sharing :)
+Kristen225 Enjoy :-)
Put the flour in some cold water and stir until the lumps are gone. Then add THAT into the boiling liquid :) I like to use arrowroot.
We made this and a couple times it went lumpy. So now we hanged it up a bit and we add in the flour slowly before the liquid boils and then we bring it to a boil whisking all the time and that prevents lumps.
I just discovered Dr Mc Dougall and his recipes just last week. I am so happy to see one made before I try. Thank you!
I find mixing the flour with a little cold water to make a paste first and then add to the stock prevents lumps.
Thank you. Simple and healthy. How can you go wrong.
I made this tonight Anja! It is super easy to make and tastes absolutely superb!!!! Thanks so much!
I’m new to this world of starch based vegan diet, I need all the help I can get. Thank you for your illustrations
welcome :-)
You should always add the thickening agent to cold liquid otherwise you'll end up with lumps like you did with this gravy.
Those aren't lumps...those are mini dumplings! ;)
I added to the simmering gravy -- just sprinkled thinly, whisked; repeat; until it was used up. No lumps at all.
@@MadlyinLovewithJesus-1953 That works, but it’s unnecessary effort.
NIce! Have you tried making a paste by adding a little water or broth to the rice flour and adding it to the mix on a simmer rather than a hard boil? I believe this method would preuvent lumps. Return to boil and allow to thicken to desired consistency.
Thank you. Really enjoy watching you. 🌷
Thank you, Anya, for bringing this recipe to my attention! I have just eaten two bowls of veggies which this gravy has given magnificent added flavour to. I used Aminos instead of Soy Sauce as that's what I had on hand. Yum!
+Chillax Glad you like it and that it is helping you to eat more veges :-)
Dr McDougall would say that is Mary’s recipe. It is so good!
This is about the best gravy I have ever made. Thank you for posting.
Glad you like it
Looks fantastic. Thank you for sharing. I’ll try it. I have oat flower. 👍💎
Enjoy!
Haven't tried it yet, but am guving it a thumbs up in anticipation. Sp far I've been on mostly starch for over a month, and am very enthused.
Wow! What an outstanding recipe. Been looking for a healthier gravy and I’m so glad I ran into your version. I used wild rice to create the flour. It’s great that one can control how much (or little) salt goes into it by alternating the soy/tamari/aminos and how much. I used a beef flavored vegan broth and between it and the very little liquid aminos, there’s so much flavor without any added salt! In fact I might even reduce the broth a bit. Thank you for this very flavorful recipe!
If you make a slurry of room temp water with the thicker before adding... no lumps.
You should think about using Bob's Red Mill, Organic, Un-Modified Potato Starch. No lumps whatsoever when pre-mixed with a tad of cold water, then pouring into your hot liquid.
Make a slurry with the flour and water before adding to the pan to stop lumps.
Yes :-)
Excellent thank you lady🌸
You are so welcome
Very helpful video, can't wait to make this
I luv your videos. thx for making low fat veganism easy, affordable and delicious!
Will you share the vegetable stock recipe please ?
adding the flour when the liquid is still cold, and using a whisp will guarantee no lumps ----similar to a slurry
This is a healthy gravy wow the dislikes on this one.i can't even believe it.its something good for you.and people dislike this video .I had this before and it is good .and I love it so much .thanks for posting this video .
Finally no mushrooms!! Lol
Always love your videos!
Reserve some of the liquid in a small jar add the rice flour and shake until mixed then add to boiling pot.. No lumps!
Do you have a video for the bean loaf?
Just made this..... SOOOOOO GOOOOOD!!!
So glad you like it as much as I do :-)
Thanks for the recipe, looks so easy and cant wait to try it.
I'm definitely saving this video.
I find if I add the flour to it while it's cold, it doesn't lump up.
💚
nice recipe.......also, perhaps a little bit of Masala curry powder, and a bit more garlic, to give it a store bought gravy flavor ( minus the additives and MSG!) .......if you don't have vegetable broth, mushroom powder ( homemade or found in Chinatown) will do.
What’s a good substitute for vegetable broth if none available?
Love your videos and your accent. Keep um coming!
hi...the gravy can be kept in the fridge? for how many days? xxx Irina
+irina van der klooster About 5 days... if it lasts that long lol We always eat ours in one go.
+CookingWithPlants Hihi........the gravy was so yummie....my son likes thick gravy with his fries😉
so delicious!
Oh yum! Hey Anja, if you whisk in that flour while the broth is still cold you won't get those lumps! Saves you a bit of effort! Thanks for sharing the recipe! ;-)
McDougall gravy poutine for the win!
I just made this and it turned out delicious. Thank you!
+Etienne-Emile Antikatastaseis So glad :-)
CookingWithPlants It was really helpful. I have never cooked mashed potatoes with gravy before and your video was the easiest and healthiest thing I could find. Thanks again!
I can't buy or make brown rice flour at home and don't want to use wheat flour - do you think this would work if you substituted corn starch for the flour?
Super sauce but What IS the thing on the Dish the recipe please thanks
What did you put the gravy on , please? Just joining in the fun!!
It was a bean loaf... I can't remember exactly what I put in it.
@@cookingwithplants Sounds like how I cook, usually don't measure a thing. lol, thanks!!
Look delicious!
Thank you 😋
Nice work. Great recipe.
The flower was lumpy because it was not first slowly tempered, add some of that water in the rice starch and then slowly + into the liquid of the rice gravy pouring it in to the hot mixture and you’ll never have lumpy gravy
I who am no cook. Wow !!! Best Gravy Ever !!!
So happy to hear that :-)
I guess you could always "sieve the gravy Una" to quote a masterpiece.
Different flours would work just as well? I'm thinking rye, or chickpea?
That bean loaf looks great too, have you done a video on how to make it ? Thanks :)
I don't have a video for the loaf yet... but will definitely do one soon :-)
CookingWithPlants nice thanks, can't wait for that one :)
CookingWithPlants Looking forward to the bean loaf recipe
CookingWithPlants just curious, 3 years later now, did you ever get around to uploading that video ☺? BTW, the gravy looked awesome on it
Thank you for the video. cant wait to try it!
Is moringa allowed in the McDougall diet?
It looked quite yummy though I haven't tasted it
HI couldl i use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce?
My same question. Did anyone reply yet?
Just made this ... yum yum YUM!!!
Thank you❣
You are so welcome
This looks seriously yum! Is there a recipe for the bean loaf? I can't find it on your channel. Thanks :)
Just aw you already answered this question, haha. So take it as an extra request for the recipe video :)
Jade Eaglemeare :-) It's on my list xx
CookingWithPlants Where's the bean loaf recipe?
pushplaywithjay I haven't done an official recipe for it yet. Soon x
I was wondering if I eat as Dr. McDougall recommends do I have to count calories and measure portion sizes? Thanks for your videos you have a new subscriber
no you dont
This is FANTASTIC ...I ground the dry brown rice flour in my blender and then added the rice flour very slowly to the simmering ingredients...and luckily didn't have any clumping. You mention that you put gravy on pasta...that's a new idea for me and I will try it. Tell me, how complicated is your bean loaf? Thank you!
Glad you like the recipe and that you made your own rice flour. Yes gravy on pasta is delicious. You can try this loaf: cookingwithplants.com/recipe/blackbean-potato-seitan-roast/
Thank you so much for posting this!
Does this work without the soy sauce? Or can I add something different?
just made the gravy tastes great! thanks :-)
Awesome, glad you liked it :-)
Wow all those dislikes on this video on fat-free gravy.i love this .I'm on a liquid diet do to medical reasons.and this gives me new flavor.thanks for this video.i love this thanks a ton .😀🎖🏆🌻
Thank you for your lovely comment. I really appreciate it :-)
it seems like it would be very high in salt and i thought dr D rcommends low salt? especiaaly if trying to lose a lot of weight?
Is using just regular cornstarch not allowed or something?
mix the flour with cold water before adding
Looks good!
Is it supposed to be gritty a bit from the brown rice flour? Mine isn't smooth at all :( has a great taste but maybe it's because I made my own rice flour?
No it is normally smooth
@@cookingwithplants thank you :) maybe my coffee grinder isn't grindy enough lol
Dissolve the rice powder using water before adding in hot stock
Hmm I’m super low sodium so how is this possible to make taste good with no salt no fat?
Thank you!
First time I made vanilla pudding from ready-made powder (which is little more than pure starch) I gave the powder into the boiling milk. Lumpy mistake. Blame me, on the label it said to mix it cold.
Yes, mixing cold is best :-)
I wonder if i can get non GMO soy sauce that is salt free...
What is the beanloaf that you are pouring the gravy over? Do you have a recipe for it? I did a search on your webpage but didn't find it. It looks way to thick to be tempeh.
I'm curious about it, too. Hopefully she responds.
+Kelly Yero It was just something I the together on the day. Not sure what I had in it anymore.
Do u grind the rice cooked or raw? Thanks
TM, grind the rice raw... I use basmati rice and it turns out perfect!
Yum!! Have to try this:)
ya reckon this would be nice without soy sauce?
can we use brown rice flour ?
Yes :-)
Oh wow you get up pretty early!! (assuming you're a fellow aussie) Good morning then! and thankyou :)
My gravy taste good but it is gritty. Did I cook it too long?
Can you come up with a vermouth tempeh?
I'll see what I can do :-)
Thank you from Thailand
I like to skip all this, and use canned corn thrown in a blender with some veg broth. Over the stove until it thickens like gravy.
Love how this doesn't have mushrooms-my dad has an allergy to them.
I used enriched white flour since it's all I had. I am licking my plate so fucking good!!! I was just about to try and make mushroom gravy but my mushrooms had gone bad...I'm not upset anymore
