  • We usually think of vitamin D as the “sunlight vitamin.” And while vitamin D is critical to our bodies, it is ALSO critical to your sleep. Some of the latest research suggests that vitamin D influences both your sleep quality AND and your sleep quantity.
Vitamin D is a steroid hormone that helps control how cells and organs function. It’s produced in the kidneys and controls blood calcium levels and the immune system. Adequate levels of vitamin D contributes to strong bones and teeth, prevents, the body from breaking down, and supports the immune system, nervous system, and muscles.
Studies show that adults and children with vitamin D deficiency are more likely to have things like delayed bedtimes, less time asleep each night, low quality sleep, and frequent nighttime wakings. They are also at a higher risk for developing a sleep disorder.
So join Dr. Michael Breus as he explains how vitamin D actually works in your body, and why it's one of the essential vitamins you need to get your best sleep.

I never believed supplementation could help with my chronic insomnia. But I started reading about it and the first recommendation I came across was to start taking magnesium glycinate. That helped. But then I added Vit D with K2. To my surprise I started sleeping far more than in the past. While it’s not a perfect night’s sleep, it has improved and I’m grateful.

I'm a nurse working 50-60 a week which means I rarely even see daylight. My vit D level was 5 when last checked. I have no idea how I function at such a high level. My sleep is trash.

Every since I elevated my Vitamin D my sleep has for the first time in years been great. I also only get up about once a night at the most to use the restroom. I have been begging for years the ability to sleep well at night.

    • @tedshepard518

@@somethingspecial1415 I take it in the morning. I upped my dosage to 4,000 IU, I used to take 1,000 IU per day. For some odd reason my acid reflux is better also. I'm beginning to believe that Vit D levels affect us in many ways.

In my case, taking both vitamin D and dairy on a daily basis ruined my sleep because it was causing pain in my urinary system (cause : urinary crystals - calcium phosphate crystals). It took months for the pain to stop and now when I take vit D, I get pain in the same region.

Like I said, I mixed vit D3 with dairy! You can use butter cause even if the calcium is highly bioavailable, there's only low amounts of calcium in it. But I would definitely avoid yogurt and cheese and even milk if you're gonna take Vit D, especially if it's high vit D3 intake. For example, if you don't eat dairy, sure, go for 5-10k IUs of vit D3 during winter. I wouldn't do that mixed with dairy though.@@Bulletproofyourhealth

I want to emphasize the overusing point you made. It does not take much for Vit D to build up to toxic levels within your body and cause hypercalcemia. They say taking K2 and Magnesium can help but in my own experience it did not help.

It actually is pretty hard to overdose and the 400 he said would barely do anything I had to take 5000. I use a day for several months to get my blood level to where it's supposed to be.

The amount of D3 required to get correct levels varies very widely between people, there is no one standard dose for everyone. If you are supplementing then you need to get your blood levels checked and adjust the dose accordingly.
Google "Rightsleep" to find out how to fix your sleep issues. It fixed my insomnia.

Why do some research says that sun exposure is best in midday between 10am to 3pm? Which is true?

Try taking 1000IU of D2. It's lower absorption, but it's better slow than nothing.

Vitamin D supplements resulted in insomnia for me. It started after about three weeks of taking it (last winter and again this winter). Obviously, the solution was easy - stopped taking daily, now just take one tablet weekly. Sleep patterns returned to normal.

I have also been on amitriptyline recently and that hasn't even helped me sleep. I've stopped taking it and have started taking vitamins and for the last 2 nights I've slept 6 hours each night. That's so much for me I usually have no sleep most nights. One trick I have learned recently is to only go to bed when you are super sleepy and that's what I've done the last 2 nights and I have finally got some sleep. I'm hoping i have finally figured it out

Try maybe, magnesium glycinate and reading a book and you might sleep while doing this. Stop focusing on not sleeping at night, just rest and tell yourself your are safe and relax and just be still and smile.
