I'm a little late but just wanted to let you know I found this video very helpful. I watched this because I was curious about dip pens and how they draw and purchased my first bunch of nibs about a week ago. They are so addicting and pleasing to work with, so far my favorite is the Nikko G-nib, but I really like the Brause Steno (Blue Pumpkin) nib on textured paper because it holds so much ink, it doesn't work as well on smooth bristol though.
Good tip about the rust, by the way fun fact WD-40 isn't a lubricant, it was developed in the 1950s by the rocket chemical company, in order to displace water to prevent corrosion on missiles, hence the name "water displacement- attempt 40", or WD-40.
Ok I have just done a post about preserving the nibs with WD 40 for storing. I forgot to mention that tip and you gave the real function of the WD 40. Thank you for this share.
Something that will help with rust is to throw some of those little silica desiccant bags in your nib storage box. They will keep the moisture down that would otherwise attack and corrode your nibs. I take several medications and I get a lot of them over time, so they're readily available to me for that.
I see you haven't posted a video in a while but I'd love to see more about drawing with nibs, maybe a tutorial or demonstration. I'm also curious about ink wash painting if you have any experience with that or would like to make a video experimenting with it. 😊
This is a very information and helpful video. Thank you! It was useful to see the various nibs and what they do as well as to see and hear the about various techniques to improve my inking skills.
Hi Julia, just wanted to say THANKYOU SO MUCH for this video. I recently have been reinspielend to start drawing again ( after about 10 years) and anything in ink used to be my fave- I have some nibs to sample and using a G but was struggling to get a flowing line- the alcohol to clean it first has really helped! I had no idea! Some great tips, again thanks! 🙏
Thank you so much for all the info, especially for the tip about diping new nibs in alcohol. 🤗I just bought my first dip pen and I love it, but the ink wouldn't want to flow down to the tip of the nib with none of the 5 nibs I got. I was thinking that maybe I need to learn how to use it first, because apperantly just diping wasn't working 😅 You have no idea how happy I'm right now 😊
Thank you Julia for your very interesting & informative videos. My question for you is about ink that will look raised when it's dry. Have you ever used one & is it different from using standard inks ? Thanks so much, I look forward to hearing from you. Karen
@@NatureSketchbook any nib? I have an old fountain pen whuch nib has a small ball at the end. Thick upstrokes just scratch a little but it doesnt stuck. Worried what will happen with flex nibs in such a situation cause my nib wasnt flex...

Thank you for sharing, that’s so interesting to know! I will be sure to tell that story to my family when they make me use WD-40 again next time. ;)

You can also use diluted citric acid.
Now that is interesting, I've been using it my whole life and had no idea 😮

Yay, that sounds great. Enjoy your nib drawing sessions!
I'm trying to draw with my new dip pen as I'm watching your video. First time I've ever tried it.
That sounds like fun - I hope your drawing session went well! :)
You are a great teacher! Thank you very much!
Thanks for showing about dip pens! I like them to draw with and this is a good introduction

Glad to hear that! Some India inks look a little bit raised when they‘re dry, the usage is not different from other inks.
Thank you for the informative video! I couldn't catch the model of the first Brause nib, the very flexible one. Which one is it?
It's been years since I made this video, so I'm not 100% sure, but it's probably a Brause 66EF. 😊
Hi, any experience with bamboo pens?
I‘ve recently made a video about bamboo pens :)

What are the little tubs with ink in them?
Just very tiny containers for small amounts of ink. I think they were called dinky dips or something similar?
Where did u get that inkwell thingy did u make it ?
You can buy these from calligraphy supply shops. I think it’s called a Dinky Dip.
Ty so much it’s really cute and just what I’m looking for
Very informative...
That second small nib is called Maru pen ot Maru nibs.
I always made thick lines😖
what happens if I try to make a thick upstroke with a fountain/dip pen? I will break the nib or tear the paper or what?
The nib will likely get stuck in the paper.

Ahw yeah... WD 40. And if it doesn't help just use duck tape :D
That pretty much sums up the entire life philosophy of MacGyver! :D
Ich denke das du die gerüstete Federn auch mit Coca-Cola wieder sauber bekommst.
No Cola in my household, sorry. 😉
