I have been a painter for as long as I can remember. Inking and linework have never been appealing to me. Now that I'm trying to learn it, I am overwhelmed. It's thanks to tutorials like yours that I manage to make progress.

I've seen quite a few Inking tutorials but this one is by far the most helpful. Watching how you do the brush strokes so closely is very helpful, especially watching how you blend the tapered lines together going from thin to thick. I've been trying to find a video that show me and this one is PERFECT! Thank you very much! *Subscribes

Thank you so much for this video. I’ve learned so much from it. I’m a Brazilian color artist learning new skills, and this vídeo sincerely brought me to tears in the beginning. Robson Rocha is a Brazilian comic book artist and he recently passed away due to COVID (a few months ago in fact). I feel this is also an amazing tribute to him and his amazing work. Thank you once again for this amazing video. 🥰
Hi Michelle Rezende. Thank you for the kind words. When I made this video, Robson Rocha was still around. I’m fact, after I’ve inked the piece and uploaded the video, I told Robson and he looked at the art and video. He even responded saying that’s was his old work and not as good. I told him that to me it’s really good and that’s why I wanted to ink this piece. He’s a very kind artist. Thank you again for watching and I’ll have more tutorials coming soon! Stay tuned.

Hi Gary Banner. Same with me. It’s just easier going from thin to thick. Works more gradually and more controls knowing how thin the tip of the brush is. Sometimes going from thick to thin, that brush may not snap back to a point. Thank you for watching. You should talk more about HOW you establish where the light AND heavy inking is to take place. And, the preparation in the drawing itself, BEFORE you start inking.
Hi Ray. Thank you for watching my video. That’s a great idea! I’ll make more videos in the future explaining that process. I realized not everyone watches all my videos and I should summarize the process as I go. Thanks again for watching!

Hi Jerry. Thank you again for watching my video and for this comment. Haha. That was funny. I actually don’t dip ink over the artwork usually. But in the past when I make real time inking videos, viewers ask how often I would need to dip ink. Because I was doing that off screen. So for demonstrations, I would show the camera when I would need to get ink. And believe me, it’s nerve racking when I’m holding that bottle of ink over the artwork for the camera to see. Because anything can happy and accidentally spill ink over the art. Haha.

One thing I’ve noted is he uses all the tools in his bag it really changed how I approach my inks, my new mantra: WWWD. (What would Walden do! ) All the best from the East Coast!
Hi Keith V! Thank you for all the kind words. I appreciate that very much! I hope this video can be of help. When I started learning how to ink, I would watch other artist 'preform' the craft. But once in a while, there would be other artist who would take the time and show me how to ink a little bit of the same piece I've done. Which I've learned the MOST from. This is why I create these videos, so other aspiring artist can see how I use the tools and the way I render. Seeing the 'performance' shows so much more. Haha. I live the "WWWD" mantra! Made my day! As for the top of the lips, I prefer lighter, thinner lines; this provides, not only a 'break' from all those thicker lines, but a bit more realism. Even a 'Broken line' works great for the lips.
Hi Ray. Thank you for watching my video. Yes, usually when inking, I like to have the top lines thinner and sometimes broken. While the bottom lines thicker where the shadow areas are. Thanks again for watching!

Hi UA-camr452. Thank you for watching my video. I switched over to use the Quill because those lines are finer. I can use either brush, micron or quill for that area. Sometimes inking clouds and puffy amoke, the tool that makes it the easiest to ink is the quill as it gives a nice bounce for the line weights. I hope that answer your question. Hi Tanish. Thank you for watching my video. For the quill, I’ll use the high ones black magic ink as I find that ink is the right consistency to hold on the quill and not too liquid to flow out too quickly. Awesome tutorial, and beautiful inks, Walden! You always present your videos so clearly and expertly. You do your blacks and line weights with such ease. What is your opinion of brush pens? Pentel, Micron, Faber-Castell, and Tombow make brush pens that I've considered buying and using. Thanks so much for all you do for us, and stay well, my friend!
Hi Rometiklan! Thank you for the kind words, my friend. The Aquash Brush pen that you see me using in the video is my favorite. I've tried all the other brush pens out there and they all work well. I just this Aquash Brush pen because it doesn't cost as much to replace and very little maintenance. Other brushes such as Windsor & Newton or Raphael, when I'm done inking, I would need to wash, shampoo, and condition. This brush I use, I don't even need to clean. I just keep using it over and over. Also, the Pentel, Micron, Faber-Castell, and Tombow brushes are also good for when I'm traveling or doing commissions at comic book conventions. I won't have to carry bottle of ink with me and these brush pens can do the job just as quick. Sometimes they'll run out of ink, but you can still continue using them by dipping it into ink. There ARE other brush pens where the 'brush' isn't really a brush with hairs. They're more like a foam or felt that's shaped like a brush. They can be good for the beginning of it's use, but after a while, that sharp tip disappears. When that happens, that brush pen is only good for spotting big ink areas. Hope that answers your question, Rometiklan! Thank you for all your support, my friend. Stay safe and be well!
Thank you for watching my video. You can also use any brand of ink to refill any type of these microns, fineliners and brush pens. After refilling, they will work just like new. After you refill them and if it still doesn’t work, it may be that the tips of your microns are dried out. In that case, get some rubbing alcohol and dip the pens in there for a few good minutes. That will break down the dried ink inside the tips and allow ink to flow again. Then refill and it’ll be just like new. Thank you again for watching. If you enjoy these types of video and like to see more, please subscribe to my channel for more tutorials. Thanks again!
Wonderful video I have watched a dozen times. Ready to try on some of my drawings but have a stupid question. What are you using to clean the ink from your brushes and pens?
Hi Alex. Thank joy for watching my video. That’s not a stupid question at all. I rarely clean my brushes. I just leave the ink there on the brush for months sometimes. And if brush tips every gets stiff from the ink, I just swish the brush into a bottle of water for a few seconds, press down on it to crack that stiffness, and I’m off to inking again. There’s really no need to clean these Aquash Pentel Brush pens as their made of nylon. As for the quill pens, I’ll just used a rag to wipe it clean and dry. Never used water and that will make your quill nibs rust instantly. The only pens I do need to clean are the Rapidograph KoKinoor technical pens. And here’s my video on how I do that. ua-cam.com/video/IY3mwzhg8MU/v-deo.html Thank you again for watching my video and don’t forget to subscribe if you haven’t already. I’ll have more tutorials coming soon!
Hi Myron Mielke! I only dip the aquash brush and not used the reservior. You may have see some of my other videos where I HAVE filled the reservoir. And I fill those ones where the brushes because the brush tips are not sharp anymore. I'll use those to fill in large ink areas. I also get asked that same question about cleaning when done. I don't wash them clean as often as they are nylon brushes. The Aquash Brush is just like those other brushes in the market where they have pre-filled ink in the reservoir. When artist use THOSE brush, they never clean them. They just keep using them over and over again until they're all out of ink. If they were to clean them after every use, that would mess up the ink inside the reservoir. And you're able to use that brush over and over without cleaning. That's why I love using this brush. Once in a LONG while, I will give the Aquash brush a few swirls in the water. That's when the ink is dried out on the brush tips on non usage. But I usually ink everyday it there's no chance of it getting dried out. Other than that, I just ink, put brush away, and come back later to continue inking. Hope that answers your question. Thank you for watching and please subscribe if you haven't done so already. More videos coming soon!

Hi TK Arts. I was actually thinking about making a video on how to remove the blue lines. Your comment just gave me that extra push. Inkers these days used bluelines because it’s faster for the pencils to get to the inker once it’s done. Besides using a shipping service to send the original art out, it may take days for the inker to receive. When a penciled is done with the pencils, they can scan it. Email the grey pencils to the inker and the Inker can start work on it immediately. Now, the inker would convert the grey pencils to bluelines. While inking, they can see what needs to be inked. When done with inking and scanned, we can knock out all the blue lines on the computer via Photoshop and leave only the black ink. TK Arts. I’m going to make a video about this and demonstrate how I remove the blue so it’ll be clear. Thank you for the idea!
Thanks mr wong i was so confused about the blue lines .as for inking practice i always change my Pencil lines inti blue lines...and as for removing the blue lines i just change it to black and white idk if that's the correct way if removing the blue lines.. thanks again mr wong
@@crakoa1254 when you’re drawing with a blue pencil for sketching, majority of the time, you won’t be able to completely erase that blue pencil. Those are “non-photo blue” pencils. Meaning once you sketch everything in with the blue pencil, you can draw on top with regular grey pencil. Then when scanning the set, the scanner won’t pick up majority of the blue pencils. Which is why inks print out Blue lines to ink. So when don’t, they’ll scan and the scanner won’t pick up any of the blue. Every now and then, when scanning is color, you will pick up the blue under the grey pencils or inks. When that happens, I’ll use photoshop and remove all the blue pencils at a click of a button. Very fast and easy. Leaning only the grey pencils or completed inks. So to remove any type of blue pencil or blue lines, the only way to do that is digitally, in my case... using Photoshop. That’s the only way to remove any kind of blue. Digitally.

I have a noob question.. How did you get the artwork printed in blue? I think its called a panel.. I see some panels that have writing on them like there professional panels from a comic book company. I just don't know how to get these panels. Do people sell them. Do you go into photoshop and turn it blue then print it out? What's up with the blue panels? How do I get my hands on one so I can ink something??? Michael
Hi Michael. Thank you for watching my video. That’s a good question. I work for Marvel and DC and they will send me the the art boards that has the blue lines promised on them. But if your in the market yourself, you can also order comic art boards that has Bluelines pre-printed on them. Here’s my Amazon affiliate link to one of them… amzn.to/3r1P4sg The other option is buy regular blank art boards and print lines yourself. But why waste that time when you can already buy them preprinted. Hope that helps! Subscribe to my channel if you haven’t already. I’ll have more tutorials coming soon! Thanks again!

Hi Jerry. Thank you for watching my video. Yes, majority of comic book artwork is done in pencil first, then inked over later. It’s all approved process through publishers. So if there’s any changes that needs to be done, that can be changed in the pencil stage before inking. Hi Derrek. Thank you for watching my video. It’s actually a different Pentel Brush Pen. Pentel makes a lot of different ones and the brush you see me using in my video, is called the Pentel Aquash Brush pen. You can use my amazon affiliate like and order a set here… amzn.to/3AexDWv There’s no ink cartridge on it. This brush is supposed to be used for water colors. Ever since I discovered it and started making videos of using it for my comic book work, more and more artist are using the same type of brush. Doesn’t cost as much as a sable hair brush and snaps into a fin tip all the time. Not to mention very low maintenance and don’t need to clean. These brushes last a very long time! Thank you again for watching my video. If you enjoy these types of videos and like to see more, please subscribe to my channel. I’ll have more art tutorials and demonstrations coming up!
@@WaldenWongArt I discovered that sable haired Winsor #3 does not snap back into a fine tip, so this brush has me curious. 🤔 / Thanks for all the content.

Hi Tony, that’s exactly what that brush is made for. To fill it with water. Except, I use it for the purpose not intended. I like that brush because it always snaps into a sharp tip and I don’t need to constantly clean it. Plus, it doesn’t cost as much as a sable hair brush, less maintainer and last for a long time.
So this is the real speed at which inking is done? At least when done right.. I’ve been used to seing so many ffw videos that this looks almost painstakingly slow, but in a good way 🙂 thank you for this!
Hi Ciprian Morariu. Thank you for watching my video. Yes, this is real time speed at how I’ve ink that small panel, which was about 2x4 inches ik size. I also make fast forward videos as well. And there are some videos on my channel that’s over three hours long. Also real time drawing, inking and coloring. If you enjoy this video and like to see more, sun my channel. I’ll have more tutorials and art demonstrations soon! Thanks again!
Hi Gheoghita Schiopu. Good catch there! If you’re talking about the characters right eye, I should have thicken up the top eyelid or extend that top eyelash all the way down to the top eye lid. That would be the proper way to ink that eye. You, my friend, have a good eye (no pun intended). Aside from that, I hope you enjoyed my video. Hi Kathleen Caffrey. Yes, you can also use microns pens to do the inking. Microns pen won’t give you that like variation like a brush will, so you would have to build up the line to get a thickness. Thank you for watching and if you enjoy my video and like to see more, please subscribe to my channel if you have already. More tutorials coming soon!
Hi Ice Coola. When I draw in pencil myself, I do press that hard to grind the pencil led onto the paper. I’ll use a softer lead pencil. After inking, I would use a kneaded eraser as well as Vinyl eraser, which does a great job cleaning the pencils. I’ve added links below my video description that also shows all the art supplies I used. Check it out. Thank you for watching. If you enjoy these types of video and like to see more, please subscribe to my channel for more tutorials. Thanks again!
Hi pentachronic. Thank you for watching my video. In this video, the paper that I used for the under drawing was just a basic regular printer paper. That’s why you see me curl that paper up like I did in the beginning of the video. Sometimes when paper bleeds, I’ll switch over from using a quill to a brush and control how much ink is on my brush. That way, it won’t bleed. The printer paper could have bleed, but less ink on the brush made it not bleed
@@WaldenWongArt I’m assuming it’s color ink-jet paper that’s been printed out ? That’s probably better for inking since ink-jets are essentially ink and the paper is good for fine resolution ink work. Laser paper has been heated and bonded so I’d guess that’s not as good ??
@@GodzillaGoesGaga ah yes! Your correct. It was inkjet paper that I used which has a smoother finish to it. Not the totally regular printer paper that has a bit of roughness. That’s correct.
@@GodzillaGoesGaga actually, the best paper to ink over are Bristol’s boards. Here’s my Amazon affiliate link to a brand that I prefer using… amzn.to/3Z8aBfm Perfect thickness to roll around a printer to make Bluelines. Smooth surface to create a smooth ink like. And thick enough where the art paper won’t bend or dent. Hope that helps!

Awesome work. I also taper my lines from thin to thick. I just think it’s easier to apply pressure gradually than decrease it.
Hi Gary Banner. Same with me. It’s just easier going from thin to thick. Works more gradually and more controls knowing how thin the tip of the brush is. Sometimes going from thick to thin, that brush may not snap back to a point. Thank you for watching. You should talk more about HOW you establish where the light AND
heavy inking is to take place. And, the preparation in the drawing
itself, BEFORE you start inking.

Must know your product well to be dipping over your work.
Must be a professional thing ❤
Haha.

Your videos are super informative and helpful. You make me want to draw. Watching you feed the crowquil nib over your inking makes me so nervous. Haha. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Jessie. Thank you for the kind words. To be honest, I don’t usually feed my crow quill over my artwork when I ink. I did feed it on camera so viewers know how often I need ink. It gives aspiring artists an idea how often I go for more inn. Thank you for watching. If you enjoy these types of video and like to see more, please subscribe to my channel for more tutorials. As for the top of the lips, I prefer lighter, thinner lines; this provides,
not only a 'break' from all those thicker lines, but a bit more realism.
Even a 'Broken line' works great for the lips.
Hi Ray. Thank you for watching my video. Yes, usually when inking, I like to have the top lines thinner and sometimes broken. While the bottom lines thicker where the shadow areas are. Thanks again for watching!

Thank you Desi! Much appreciated. Will have bore tutorial videos coming soon.
I always test the waters with fountain pens on scrap paper, too many times I've scratched up the pages or started with a blob.🤣
Hi LilLadyA, yes, majority of the time when I do inking work, I’ll text my tools on a scratch piece of paper to see how it works first. Once I get it going the way I like, then I’ll start inking. I don't understand why you use the quill on 26:00 why use this instead of fine liner?
Hi UA-camr452. Thank you for watching my video. I switched over to use the Quill because those lines are finer. I can use either brush, micron or quill for that area. Sometimes inking clouds and puffy amoke, the tool that makes it the easiest to ink is the quill as it gives a nice bounce for the line weights. I hope that answer your question. Hi Walden! Awesome video as always. Btw, which ink did you use to feed the quill?
What kind of inks were you using on the pentel brush pen? Im afraid of blocking the pen channel by using the wrong type of ink.
And here’s my video on how I do that. ua-cam.com/video/IY3mwzhg8MU/v-deo.html

Hi Pablo Pazos. Thank you!
Do you only dip the aquash brush and not use the reservoir? Just clean with water when done?

Mr Wong what is the reason comic book inkers use blue lines for inking?..and how do you remove the blue lines.im so confused
Digitally.

Is the work first done in pencil then done over in ink ?
Hi Jerry. Thank you for watching my video. Yes, majority of comic book artwork is done in pencil first, then inked over later. It’s all approved process through publishers. The Pentel brush you're using -- did you simply remove the ink cartridge from it, or is that a different Pentel brush pen?

There’s no ink cartridge on it. This brush is supposed to be used for water colors. @@WaldenWongArt Ah thanks. I could not pick out "Aquash".
Hi Tony, that’s exactly what that brush is made for. To fill it with water. Except, I use it for the purpose not intended. The eyelashes are placed on the skinfold of the eyelid meeting with the eyebrow?
Hi Gheoghita Schiopu. Good catch there! If you’re talking about the characters right eye, I should have thicken up the top eyelid or extend that top eyelash all the way down to the top eye lid. i have trouble with the pencil under my ink, how can i erase the pencil under it so my work looks more refined?
Hi Ice Coola. When I draw in pencil myself, I do press that hard to grind the pencil led onto the paper. I’ll use a softer lead pencil. After inking, I would use a kneaded eraser as well as Vinyl eraser, which does a great job cleaning the pencils. I’ve added links below my video description that also shows all the art supplies I used. Check it out. Thank you for watching. If you enjoy these types of video and like to see more, please subscribe to my channel for more tutorials. Thanks again!
What was used for the underdrawing ? Just curious to use something that doesn’t cause inking issues when overlaying it.
BTW I would guess that ink-jet photo paper would be the best to work with. Would be curious to hear your thoughts.
