Was in aviation firefighting after I left school in 1975, learning my trade in the Royal Air Force until 1989 & then moving on to working at Bae Filton in Bristol.
After emigrating to Canada in 2000 , I tried to get into firefighting again but couldn’t as they don’t except experience & want you to start from scratch!
Aviation firefighting is classed as a special task once you enter the fire service & then apply to transfer to aviation , which is like deadmen’s shoes! So managed to find a position in Saudi Arabia as an ACFO in Jeddah to start then moved on to Riyadh from 2007 to 2010. Had a car accident which brought my career to a halt at 27years!
Still miss it so much , the many old friends I had as aviation firefighters are a small knit community. Many of my forces buddies I met along the journey . Old & new trucks & being close up to aircraft, I loved it! Regards Stephen Alberta Canada.
Did you serve as a firefighter at BAE Filton Steve? We remember the aerodrome being there, but obviously you never think these places will close, or go - so we missed out on capturing the fire service operations then!
Really interesting to read of your time as an ACFO in Saudi! Did you do domestic cover as part of your firefighting duties in Saudi?
Please feel free to come and join us in the UK Firefighter Hub on Facebook, we'd love to see photographs of your time serving. You may even find some of your colleagues in the group: facebook.com/groups/ukfirefighterecruitment/
@ yes I did firefighting duties at Filton, as industrial for the site , plus Rolls Royce site & then aviation for the airfield. Left as a sub officer, things went down hill when BAE went for airport ideas! Tried to go to Cardiff Airport but after passing all test they stated I was too old at 32!
Saudi we covered all areas up to the entrance gate to the airport, lots of calls mainly vehicle accidents & medical calls.
A lot of thinking done as had to tell crews what to do besides doing my own job , driving manual vehicle & operating two radios! Pretty stressful. Regards Stephen.
@ sorry I don’t do Facebook, that’s the wife’s thing..
@@fire3048A fantastic career Steve!
very interesting, im a Station Officer at Perth International Airport for Airservices Australia, we are a category 9/10 aerodrome. Greay to see content of Airport firefighters as there isnt a whole bunch of videos out there that are current.
City firefighter in the USA, I'd have loved to work at as an airport FF, to be around planes and be a firefighter at it would be awesome.
Where are you based? We're hoping to travel to the US again in the new year to put together some content on the differences between the US and British Fire Departments/Services!
It's always interesting to learn about our brothers and sisters across the pond! 🇬🇧🤝🇺🇸
@UKFirefighterHubTV Central Massachusetts. I just came back from a week vacation in London 2 weeks ago too. I used to have a UK friend in the NHS there that lived in Watford I'd meet up with when I'd visit but idk what happened to him, he stopped corresponding.
Please feel free to come and join us in the UK Firefighter Hub Facebook group! We'd love to learn more about firefighting in Central Massachusetts!

As a student pilot based at the Oxford airport, I feel I am in the safe hand.
The cleanest machine and gear I’ve ever seen.
But of course, trained to a highly specialised standard; ready to go at a moments notice! 🚒
Because it never gets used
That is exactly how it should be. The fire crews are there for the worst-case scenario we all hope will never happen. They will hopefully never have to use their equipment in anger.
@@CDB8939 you would think with all the down time they would focus on their personal development.. physical / fitness these officers look like they couldn’t even climb a ladder
@@garydonoghue4565 Shhhhhh the firefighters are sleeping.
Very much like the ARFF at, and the New Orleans Lakefront Airport
What sort of rigs do those guys over there operate? 🚒
@UKFirefighterHubTVwhen I was there in the early & mid 1990's the ARFF trucks were OSHKOSH
The light green type? I've just checked out your ARFF department on Google!
@UKFirefighterHubTVI wasn't ARFF, but Legal Attache' / Deputy IG of the State agency that owned & operated the airport, as well as other properties and flood control measures/facilities across the City of New Orleans. My office was in the terminal building back then.
How many of you did you have on duty at any time for your Fire Cover?
In the UK, we have a thing called "Low Cat" Fire and Rescue, quite often Low Cat firefighters carry out other duties at smaller airports and airstrips.
Low Cat (Low Category) Firefighters will complete refueling of aircraft, airport maintenance, grass cutting, vehicle washing; some of the firefighters may even be airport admin staff, work in the café or be managers.
Oxford Airport sits in the higher category bracket, which means they are restricted to do mostly fire service duties and not do anything that may affect their response to incidents. The wildlife management they do, they do whilst out in the trucks, so they are available for incidents, and if they were to do any baggage handling they'd take the trucks round to the terminal to help!
They are some nice crash tenders
Great work. Those are some long shifts though
It was great to meet the crew at Oxford Airport Fire & Rescue Service. It's pretty clear to see they love their work, and spoke of their satisfaction due to the flexibility these shifts offer.
Glad you liked the video! Watch this space for more! 🚒
👍👍
Oxford Airport is not connected to London so I don't know why it's saying "London Oxford Airport" for?
