Thank's Terry for another fab video, my Father was stationed at Weybourne in 1941 as an anti aircraft gun instructor and I even have a piece of a target shot down there by my father's crew on 9th January 1941!! He was previously stationed on the Isle of Grain during the BofB and I am in possession of a data plate "liberated" from a shot down Dornier 215 during that period....Wishing you a peaceful and prosperous New Year🙂
Thanks for posting that. Interesting to see the area from the air. I can remember when the Royal Anglian Regiment were stationed there, in the 1950's and the guns were still operable. I can recall hearing them being fired at towed targets and saw the shell bursts in the air from where I lived some four miles inland. Lots I could say about the area and Weybourne in general. There are Zeppelin crew members buried in the churchyard from the WWI period. And so on.
Hi Terry. Thanks for the memory of my visits to Weybourne. in those days, the old airfield manager used to pick you up in an armoured car and take you to the tank museum provided you called ahead in advance. What an experience! My first departure on the down sloping runway was a bit of a white knuckle ride as the end of the runway is not clearly visible from the start of the departure run and relief only set in when we reached the brow of the hill. I still have a picture of a Lancaster on the wall here which I purchased from the shop at Muckleburgh all those years ago.
The irony of the air defence guns (old WWII Bofors ? ) defending the airfield is that none of the RAF airfields or radar sites have any air defence now, one of the many cuts over the years. RAF Regiment used to undertake airfield defence then given to the Army now nobody. interesting vlog and for its size the airfield having a museum is a bonus
Great fun Terry. I actually considered flying here just after I got my PPL as had family staying nearby… my spidey sense kept tingling that this was probably one to leave until I’ve got a bit more experience and I’m glad I did!
Sadly I had to abandon a potential flight to Weybourne in November as the weather wasn't up to it - but I'll try again for Spring. One thing to add is that the North Norfolk Coastal Path runs along the coast adjacent to the airfield and it's an absolutely stunning walk; if you get the chance to fly in, walk out of the airfield and on the road for a short bit to then rejoin the path where it's a good few hours up to see the seals up at Blakeney Point. Well worth a day out on its own.
Most airfields have Flight Restriction Zones, a 2 or 2.5 nautical mile radius boundary (depending on the airport) that restrict the use of drones. For the benefit of casual viewers who may be ignorant of the regulations it would be wise point this out and either this particular airfield is not subject to the regulations on drone flying, or that you had obtained permission to fly a drone within the zone.
He did say this is an unlicensed, uncontrolled private strip and so has no ATZ. Also a model aircraft club is based here and use the runway for this very purpose, last time I visited I performed a low approach go around to let the model pilots know I intended to land giving them time to get their little aircraft on the ground and out of the way. If you wanted to fly a drone (or any AC) around ANY airstrip common sense dictates you check the relevant regulations/permissions first... This is the responsibility of the pilot.
Great video. first time viewer. You gained the me as a subscriber. Love the content and presentation and really brings the flight and adventure alive as well as presenting what it is like to fly in Civil Aviation. Well done.
Great Vlog Terry. Always wanted to learn how to fly since I was a kid (just turned 60) and has never been financially possible so really enjoy watching you and your exploits with the missus. She bought me a short flight in a Cessna at Duxford for this year so can’t wait to do that. Happy New Year to you!
As soon as I saw this I was onto Google Maps (satellite view) to find this for myself (it's a bit of a time-killer for me, spotting disused airfields, having lived on RAF Camps for the first 18 years of my life). Would have missed it but for the gun emplacements! Great video!
Really interesting video - been meaning to visit that museum for years as keep walking past it on the coast path. Great to see that stretch of coast line from a different perspective also!
It’s a great airfield with an interesting museum. They do have open days when they drive some of their tanks around and it was the home of radio controlled Tiger Moths during the war which were target towing to help train anti aircraft gunners. Another interesting video Terry. Happy New Year
Terry, perfect video mate! It was a great day and I really enjoyed the flying and the museum. Those AA guns look huge on the video. Good job I landed in the opposite direction. 😅. Happy New Year and looking forward to more shenanigans in 2025. 🎉
I have never seen your channel before. I enjoyed the trip very much. Happy Trails from Florida. (I don't fly anymore but used to fly a PA-28-180 years ago)
I’ve been to Weybourne a few times and it’s a lovely strip and the model aircraft flyers that usually operate there are a friendly bunch. The museum is great, loads to see and very reasonably priced. And if you continue past the museum into the village, lots of cob stone houses and another good cafe. Definitely worth a visit with a great sea approach as you showed. I tend to fly back along the Norfolk coast, great views and in the summer a big seal colony
Hi Terry, we're planning a 3-aircraft (Jodel) trip up from Arcachon (LFCH) to Norfolk in June 2025... Northrepps was already in the plan, now we might add Weybourne!
Lovely vid and destination Terry! As you say - uncontrolled airfield - down side - anyone can do as they want - plus side - you get to film from an 'active' runway - and with a drone too! 😁 Sure as hell couldn't do any of that at a controlled airfield - at least not without a lot of written permissions, insurance, NOTAM's etc!!
Thanks for that, its a great place to visit. Last time joining overhead windsock favoured 34 so went round circuit and on final, things felt a bit fast….it had swung round 180 and was favouring 16! Down 34 and teardrop out over the sea and back in over the guns. Awesome place😊
You lucky man, I've always wanted to fly in a light aircraft like yours! Some years ago before he died I took my Father on a "memory lane trip" to this very area including the nearby museum. He served in the Royal Artillery in his National Service (late 40's) and actually enjoyed it. So much so that after he was de-mobbed he joined the Territorial Army's Anti Aircraft Unit (not sure if that the correct title) They used to train at this AA gun site where they came several times a year to train and practice, another similar one was in Tywyn in Wales .
Lovely part of the country to fly. I did a trip back in May 2023 from Cromer to Wingland on the paramotor on a beautiful sunny day and flew over Weybourne en route..
Hi. Nice. Quick question. How are you able to fly a drone at an airfield and even more so over an aircraft in flight?? Is it because you have a pilots license??
No nothing to do with that, this is a private strip and apart from the general rule of not endangering an aircraft we can do what we like, with the owners permission (which I had). Still have to be careful but it’s all at our own risk. Thanks for the comment 👍
Terry does an amazing job of utilizing a variety of cameras including a drone to make a very simple flight into a 16 min video. The amount of controlled airspace makes you wonder if its all necessary and if its just self serving bureaucracy gone mad. The listening '"squark" is not used anywhere else in the world..
Another great video and fascinating airfield Terry, thanks for sharing. Can you remind me, re MATZ, if above the 3000' feet (relative to QNH/QFE), is it still courtesy to give them a call? Also, just as idle curiosity, please don't answer if I'm being too personal, roughly how many hours a year do you get in (I suspect most are in the summer months). I ask as the wx seems very odd these past two years or so (and yes the Met Office have admitted that our skies are being sprayed/weather manipulated). I don't know if it was a camera issue or optical illusion, but I couldn't see that windsock, is your middle name "Hawkeyes"? Have you got that painted on the side of the aircraft as your call-sign?🤔😀😀 Good spot! Keep well, keep safe. The season's greetings and a happy New Year to you and yours🎄🎄🎉🎉💜💜👍👍🙏🙏
Oh to be a pilot and make decisions on your destination. I used to drive 4 engine jets full of people. I used to wiggle knobs according to what ATC told me or follow a computer derived route which the autopilot made all the decisions.
Terry it is a problem around Weybourne often aircraft fly along the coast site seeing and do orbits of it, often at around 1000ft. I normally fly past at 2500ft and have seen Ofspray helicopters there and all sort of light aircraft doing low fly bys. I do love the approach from the sea but I have done the landing more often from inland 😞
34 Is a horrible direction to land from, dropping in over the trees and realising the ground falls away and you're still really high and then only being able to see the sea and not the end of the runway as you franticly try and stop! lol
Those are only for pilots who didn't file a flight plan. So long as you filed your plan, you have nothing to worry about. ;) Also, they sure look historical to me.
What a fantastic question I do find some stripes almost impossible to distinguish from the air especially on a first visit. But using Google Earth when planning and my GPS in flight helps. Thanks so very much 👍
Nice airfield. But those guns really awesome. However that one in the middle seems to be almost on the rwy centerline. And that barrel is quite long. Better not approach too low...
Well, if looking down those barrels is intimidating, imagine coming into a field to see armed Patriot missiles guarding our field. Entertainingly, we had a Patriot battery on my base in Qatar (no airfield, they used either Doha international or al Udeid AFB), where we ended up with a patriotless missile battery after the crew accidentally fired a missile, which then destructed and crashed into, of all places, the Minister of Defense's literal back yard. Once the Minister was assured of no injuries or significant damage, he found the entire episode hilarious. The installation commander was decidedly unamuzed and ordered the missiles removed from the launcher for the duration of that unit's rotation. Could've been worse, it could've instead crashed at the Royal Palace...
I worked at RAF Weybourne in what seems now, like a lifetime ago. Most of the RAF bases have gone now. There was 90,000 personnel When I joined. The British Army now has less. It's a crying shame.
Was hoping to see the ant-aircraft guns up close. In the United States you wouldn't be able to fly your drone on an airfield or close to one. Rules for flying drones where you live must be really lax
In general we can't fly drones around airports but this is a private strip and they actually have a model aircraft club based there. Thanks for the watch sir.

Excellent, nice dose of Shortfield to get us through another un-flyable day! Cheers Terry.
I went flying today, 600’ initial cloud base but scattered and then 2500’. Nice to get up in the air again but wasn’t a day for long trips

Why do Anti-Aircraft cannons protect runways? Because Anti-Hedgehog cannons are rare and hard to find.
