In the cartoon Bumi's response to the traumas of war turned him into a critical thinker capable of thinking outside of the box. He was a mad genius. The live actioned turned him into a bitter old man at an arrested development with abandonment issues.

Both versions of Bumi explore different themes. (I personally prefer the animated Bumi way more. I think the themes explored fit better in the overall story)
Animated Bumi was more about wisdom, friendship, and the resilience of the earthbending people not letting war break down their hope. Also about duty and mental strength.
Netflix Bumi was more about how hardship and pain can corrupt a person. How war and survival can make you lose sight of what's important.

I can't say I like the changes to Bumi becoming a bitter angry old man that hated his friend because "He wasn't there"
People are saying "This is realistic, because Bumi lived through this war!" But I don't think Bumi would ever of blamed his friend like that. He understood that one person, even the Avatar couldn't control the world. He knew the war was outside of the Avatar's control.
He knew Aang was just a child, who wasn't even fully trained. After 100 years, I would think he'd of come to terms with the fact that the War wasn't Aang's fault, and that Aang is not to blame for it even if he had blamed Aang for it.
But again, I don't see King Bumi ever doing that. He was a very wise character even if he acted the false Buffoon. Realism does not mean being an Arsehole.

End of the day. Aang is a 12 year old child and not even a fraction of the way to unlocking his power as the Avatar.
Bumi knows this. I cannot see him blaming Aang for the state of the world. He's too learned and wise for that.

I agree with this. Ultimately one of the things that I feared for the live action was that they would stick too close to the animated series, this is because ultimately the format, the characters, the way its set up is to be an family-friendly cartoon that you could just tune into. That meant that really I didn't think the live action would fare well if it stuck too close to the animated series, and alongside that I was afraid I'd get 'bored' if it was just simply a rerun of the animated series.
I've only got up to 'Spirited Away' and I do love what they've done with this live action, its been changed enough that its like rewatching the ATLA Animated Series all over again for the first time but close enough to the original that it still feels familiar. The story has been really good so far and I think they've done a great job in making ATLA more 'adult' and 'serious' while also still allowing the setting and characters to align with how they were in the animated series. CGI and worldbuilding is great too.
Honestly, I was really prepared for the worst with the live action remake, but its actually been really, really good and its blew my expectations out of the water.

I'm a fan of the original show down to the smaller details, I usually despise live action adaptations of cartoons, and yet I'm seeing this with pleasure (I arrived to ep. 4 so far).
It's not the animated series. With eight 1 hour episodes, they could have remade, scene for scene, the twenty 22 minutes episodes of book one of the original series, and with time to spare. But they obviously didn't. The events are there, but slightly changed, the timeline is different, events that were separated in the original series happen simultaneously, not to the same people, etc.
All is slightly darker too. There are far less comical reliefs. This is a world that had been through 100 years of war.

I actually disagree. Every character gets thrown into the story in a different way now but they all still have the same premise. Jet is still a freedom fighter. Aang is still free spirited. Iroh is still wise and sympathetic. Zuko is still melodramatic and broken. Azula is still a cunning smartass with ulterior motives. Bumi even. He's still that goofy king who has a sorta aloof attitude. Just more realistic now. And idk about you man but they totally did build on the series. Like the air nomad ambush and Katara's mother getting charred. And how Sokka's father felt about him after his first trial of becoming a warrior. We also get to see how Azula comes to be with her blue flames now. Lots of stuff they're building off of from the og.

His city was standing after a hundred years. He literally tricked his own men, to give himself a chance to take back the city at some point. I always felt like he was a very morally grey character, we just didn't see it, because this wouldn't have been possible for a simply good and kind of mad king. I loved that here, they spelled it out, and showed that his madness was partly his genius, yes - but partly him cracking under pressure after a literal century of fighting.

So many complained about Katara and Toph not fighting in The Legend of Korra but old age isn't kind to everyone and they were older than the White Lotus masters when they liberated Ba Sing Se. So many have issues with how Bumi was portrayed but not all elderly are going to be joyful, especially if they've lived through war. I've seen the most hateful and misanthropic in the elderly but I think it's about the state of the world that so many are reminded of and they hate it. Ultimately Bumi had to make hard and difficult choices and wanted to show Aang he'll have to as well.

Im guessing they oppted to skip that ep so had Aangs old friend call him out since he would experience then horrors of war while aang was absent. Its a decent scene in anything else but my gawd, King Boomy and his intro ep was a huge fav in the fandom and sets up big events in the future.
They kept alot of his personality but then feels like a whole different character took over in between scenes.

Honestly I don't kinda like this Bumi. A younger Bumi before joining the white lotus will definitely blame Aang from running away from his responsibility, but an old Bumi realized that Aang running away is a blessing in disguise for himself and the world, including the fire nation.
If Aang stayed, he would most likely die and the next avatar will lose the chance to learn and master airbending. Even if Aang did survived, that will result in a potentially berserk avatar that will stop at nothing from destroying the fire nation.

I can see why everyone is disliking the show so far, but i honestly think it does a fantastic job of improving characters with specific moments. I loved the wake scene between zuko and iroh, and with bumi i liked the new message he had for aang. With how serious and deadly the firenation is, bumi showed that while he was having a little fun with the challenges, aang has to catch up on 100 years of survival tactics that the whole world developed. I do miss the cooky sage vibe of the cartoon, but i wasnt disappointed with the new message.

    • @noobplays-saslow2920

There's literally nothing wrong with the show, in fact I would say it is great. It's successfully brought the ATLA Universe into a more 'serious' and 'adult' light and has been able to tell the story in a way that it's familiar but isn't a one and one copy, which makes me happy because its almost like rewatching the original again.
The people who are complaining really are those who like to complain about everything. The Netflix Series is an adaptation, not a remaster or remake, also if they kept the characters even more 'true' to how they were in the cartoon then the live action series would just be cringy and that was originally my greatest fear about it, because although ATLA is a smashing animated cartoon that is ultimately made for children as its target audience, the way the ATLA Universe was represented in the cartoon, from the setting to the characters, would have been pretty cringeworthy in a live action context. Let's be honest though, if it followed exactly along the same lines as the animated series then the same people complaining about minute character and setting differences now would be complaining about a lack of such if it followed closer to the animated series.

  • @tobinbtm

I personally did not like this Bumi. I grew up with Avatar and watched the episodes as they originally premiered. Bumi was my favorite character. I keep seeing the argument being made “Netflix Bumi is fine because it shows the reality of war” but I think this viewpoint totally misunderstands the character of Bumi.
Bumi is meant to be a wise teacher who through his experiences and advanced age, teaches Aang literally the skill of mastering patience. Bumi’s entire story line in the “Return to Omashu” episode is about this very teaching ideal of learning the skill of listening and waiting and striking at the right moment.
When we compare this to show Bumi, his character ideals are entirely ruined. This Bumi wasn’t tempered by time but destroyed by it. Show Bumi wasn’t resilient and wasn’t the master of patience like he was in the show but instead fell into despair. Sure this might be a so-called realistic approach but this approach took away the very foundation that made the character. I understand in the end this is Netflix’s adaption but to me it felt like Bumi had nothing to teach Aang, which was meant to be his entire purpose.

He never let go of his childish wonder. Thinking outside the box solutions probably what made him king and a great earth bender.
In his core Aang is an airbender, a pacifist, carries it with more weight than anything especially when he learns he is the last. Bumi giving the mad genius advice to Aang is important for he is given a path in which to fulfill your duty while sticking to your morals. How would you do it? By thinking like a mad genius. Hahaha
