A friend of mine is scared of having a barbarian in our group, last time I played barb, i rolled double 1 on my hit and savage blow instantly killing our cleric that was at 5 hp.
Yeas, critical failure with max damage on both hits, the whole table went silent as the clerics face just dropped, the DM said: because you rolled 1 on both your attacks role damage on the cleric that's standing next to the dragon knight you're fighting.
12+8 + a few modifiers later dropped 32 damage on the head of our poor Cleric.
Since then whenever I want to roll a barbarian everyone yells at me.

    Notes from A NG human Idiot;
I'm split on this:As a DM myself for well over 30 years,it was a beautifully well-laid and multi-layered trap(personally,i would've subverted the trope and had a possessed Chamberlain be behind it,but that's just me).The player part of me(AKA Orpheus"the Prick"Spyros) would've been rather upset at the missed oppertunity(?) to add "embalmer to a King" to his Resume...

@Pinkel Wurst-- "NG" is the abbreviation for the D&D alignment "Neutral Good". This alignment(game-wise) means that the person will do the best they can to help those in need, but realizes that can't save everyone. Most NPC(Non-Player Character)villagers, specifically "quest givers", fall close into this category.

I dm a solo game for my wife just about every night. A few weeks ago she got me to let her adopt a nightmare to the point I had to make it it's own character sheet. So it started like every other night with her lost in the forest of my own design, I had made the campaign myself and it was mostly improv. So her level ten wizzard tiefling fell down a large hole and I had prepared an epic fight between her and four hellhounds and a nightmare. My wife however had different plans. Using her infernal speach she spoke to it and asked it to call of the dogs. She rolled a nat20 on her persuasion check and I felt robbed. After About an hour of her just talking to the demon horse she moved on to the next room which had some traps she overcame with no problem. At this point I kept thinking about how I could include the nightmare again to make her smile. So when she entered the boss chamber it came to me. I rolled to see if the nightmare would come to the rescue and sure enough another nat20. I just assumed it was her lucky day little did I know it was that and more. After an awesome boss fight I was about to close up for the night when she started chatting up the horse again. It wasn't until she asked for it to join her in her travels that I noticed her plan. I told her it just wouldn't work. But after a few hours of research I just decided to let her roll for it and try to beat a 25 which I figured would be impossible. I had entirely forgotten her naturally high charisma from the first day months before. I was expecting an easy fail and to move on. She rolled another fing natural 20 and her modifiers made it 28 I nearly lost it as she pranced around in Glee. And that is how my wife created a second character by accident.

We had just finished a grueling chapter in the campaign and as a reward our paladin received a wish sword.
He used the wish to go back in time to rescue his best friend. But before we get to that part you need to know his written back story.
He became a Paladin after his family was slayed by his friend who had been cursed, causing his skin to get dark and scaly and loose control of himself. Simple enough.
Now we the party did not know his back story. And two things happened the last chapter that are significant. A Bugbear PC had been cursed with hideous skin and he and the paladin became close friends.
So when the paladin wished to go back in time the DM allowed the bugbear to roll to see if he could grab him in time to go with him. He succeeded. Now the two of them are back at the paladins home to prevent his families death. The paladin tells the bugbear to guard the home while he searches the woods. As soon as the paladin leaves the bugbear sight the zombie friend appears. The bugbear fighter tries to intercept the zombie but fails and in the house is the paladins family. Dead.
As the bug bear tries to leave, at the door way he is stopped by the past paladin. They fight the bug bear flees and "future/present" paladin (helmet on) stops the fight and vouches for the bugbear. They convince P.P (Past paladin) that a zombie killed his family and they tried to stop it. To protect the time line they hunted the zombie down and rode off to start a business for five years until they could run into the party on the rode they made the wish on.
We to this day call this event the prophetic backstory.

We had a barbarian that liked to slice off ::ahem:: important anatomy when he got the chance. We fought a necromancer in a swamp one time, and he almost got most of us, but our barbarian hook and ropes him before pummeling him to death and cutting off his weewee. Anyhow, what we don't see is same barbarian slip said weewee into our paladin's pack. So about... maybe 3 sessions later, we come to a town where the paladin's deity has a temple so he's obligated to go pay respects. Barbarian and my ranger go with him and DM has him do a dex save as he ducks down to shake the temple priest's hand. Fails and the severed weewee falls to the floor between the priest and paladin. Priest notices first and actually picks it up and asks paladin if it belonged to him. Paladin, blushing like crazy, stutters, grabs it, runs out of the temple and immediately starts trying to get barbarian back for it, destroying a couple temple columns in the process. The table's having a hard time because we're all laughing ourselves sick at this point. Paladin finally takes severed weewee to a nearby alley, smites the hell out of it with his sword so that it's dust, and then proceeds to sweep said ashes into an empty bottle. So the inside joke for the table most of the campaign afterwards was "powdered necro-dick". Much later on - like 6 or better sessions after that - as we're fighting a clockwork wizard in a dragon's lair, the paladin takes necrotic damage at his hip. None of us could figure out why until the DM cracks the biggest grin. "You never purified the ashes and you've been fighting a whole lot of evil things he's sucked energy from". The other paladin finally put 2 and 2 together and groaned, "he's revivifying from his powdered dick?!" The look on first paladin's face was priceless. It's still my most memorable D&D story to date, despite being part of 5 more long campaigns since.

First, beautifully read and a glorious story. And no, sadly never been trapped like this. I have back talked a king for being disrespectful to an ally. Then accidentally punched a draco lich into going back to its phylactery. . . I mistook some magical gloves for ogre's strength or similar so tried to punch him. . . DM stopped using crit charts after those rolls. . . And once derailed a campaign in like three sessions by disbelieving so hard I found out the 'world' was an illusion. .

It wasn't a Barbarian who saved the day, but my Shadow Adept Sorcerer with some key assists from the party Rogue. It was a military-style 3.5 game, since my DM at the time was rather fond of those, and our party, a Fighter who worshipped Bane, a Cleric of Bane, a Rogue/Assassin who followed Cyric, and my Shadow Adept Sorcerer who of course followed Shar, had been sent to clear out a fortified cave so that we could find a McGuffin. It had been called a suicide mission, and the second we got sight of the fortifications, we knew why. The fortifications consisted of a large wall of stone, carved out of the earth and still one solid piece, just worked enough to stop earth-shaping magic from messing with it. Atop it were several archers and siege weapons, specifically two ballistae and two catapults. Plus, we'd gotten reports that there was a fairly powerful wizard managing the place, keeping the artifact sealed away and keeping an eye out for nearby magic use. Of course, as a Shadow Adept, I had a pretty good chance of my magic not being detected, so we did have a few things going for us. We were pretty high level, and the wall didn't go all the way up to the ceiling, so my character used invisibility to get close enough to use Summon Undead V to put four Cloud Giant Skeletons, the base Huge skeletons, on the wall near the ballistae, two giants each. The giant skeletons smashed the ballistae easily, and then the catapults turned to target the giant skeletons that had just appeared on the walls out of thin air. The men on the walls all had bows for firing off the wall, and axes for hacking apart siege ladders, none of which was much use against the skeletons with triple-digit HP and enough DR they couldn't penetrate to shrug off most of their damage. They were all average soldiers who relied more on their defenses, which had just been breached, the artillery, which was the first thing being targeted, and the wizard, who for whatever reason hadn't detected and countered whatever magic had brought the skeletons in, so enemy morale plummeted quickly. As to why I didn't target the catapults first, since they dealt bludgeoning damage which did full damage to the skeletons, well, funny thing about Cloud Giant skeletons is that they still have their rock throwing ability, and since they were aware of the catapults, when they fired, the skeletons just caught the boulders and threw them right back. At that point, the wizard who was in charge of the fort poked his head up to see what was going on, since there was a ruckus and he hadn't detected either of my spells, which was when our sniper rogue took his held action to put a heavy crossbow bolt through it, which of course crit and solved our wizard problem. The fighter and the cleric didn't really do much that fight, since the fighter was fully invested in his two-hander to the point where he didn't even have a ranged weapon, and the cleric was in the same boat, being a "bad touch" cleric that didn't do much in the way of healing. So the fighter spent most of the fight climbing the wall, since he didn't have anything to make him climb faster and his armor was slowing him down, and the cleric kept his head down behind cover and kept an action readied to get folks up if we got knocked down. By the time the fighter got up, there were still some mooks left, but with me directing my giant skeletons, and the rogue taking called headshots at anybody who looked like they had their wits about them enough to try and give orders, it was mostly a bunch of panicked troops trying to not die long enough to get out of the cave. So the fighter, after letting the cleric in, started taking surrenders, under the conditions that the soldiers would follow orders and pledge their souls to Bane. Those that agreed joined us, and those that didn't got murdered. There were no other survivors, we made certain of that.

One of my favorite d&d moments was in castle ravenloft, with my sword and shield only Hunter Ranger (works better than youd think) in a party of 3. We had the encounter with a certain npc who transforms into a werewolf and goes berserk the moment we encounter enemies.
We clean up the skeletons and the werewolf is giving us the business, so we lead him out of the dungeon up into some rooms, trying to figure out what to do with him. We trap him in a small room and with our turns we all run out and one of us conjures a bonfire in the doorway. He doesnt take the bait. So we have a standoff. I decide to chug a health potion, then jump through the bonfire and bring the fire to him by casting "absorb elements". The bonfire served as a wall for the other two to cast spells over so the werewolf would only attack me. Almost died but worth it.

That was a great story. I hope the Barbarian got a position of honor in the Queendom after all the things.
Only big stories I've got is when I played a Lizardfolk Ranger and all of the absolutely dumb shit I did. Most of them being times I nigh went one on one with something that the whole party should have been fighting together due to the terrain. The first time was a chimera. A river kept the rest of the party from assisting as I swift swam across to try to save the guards on the other side and all... we were abandoning the area anyways due to a legion of goblins marching our direction, so the burning fields weren't as much of a problem. Lots of shooting and biting was involved. Killed it with only a couple guards helping, though I think they died in the process.
But the one that stuck out was killing a goblin ranger that was level 15 while I was level 10. Now, he had expended some of his resources already for healing and all after we killed the Black Dragon he was riding (crashing hurts). Then it was basically cat and bigger cat. I only won in the end because of the Terrain. We were in the ruins of a city that had sunk into the swamp. Being a lizardfolk, I could easily hold my breath and swim, so I used both to my advantage to skulk about trying to get close to him from an unexpected angle. Some shots were exchanged during all this when we saw each other here and there, building damage on both. Finally got into melee on the roof of a building, snapped my jaw shut on his shoulder and pulled him off in to the water then went full crocodile. He still almost killed me before he expired while under.

A little story for you -as i know you love stories- I'm a member of a group game consisting of over six players! The usual party consist of me (zealot barbarian) A paladin, an Artificer from UA, a rogue, a druid, and of course, a bard. A couple of sessions in, and i drew a card that gave me 50,000 experience from the deck of many things, and skyrocketed me 3 levels above the party, so I decided to roll up a new character to run with them until they reached the same level. I made a Zendikar Vampire Necromancer wizard, I've always wanted to run with a necromancer but a lot of DMs ban them, so this was my first and probably only chance to raise an army of the dead!
flash forward a bit, rolls are made and thanks to being level six, I have an intelligence of 20! My DM has a tradition of giving the players one unique item when they make them, something to make them stand out a bit. I asked for a pocket dimension to hold my horde, and after much debate, i get it! I now have a card, which when place on the ground, opens an archway filled with black smoke and ichor, so long as you say the activation words "Bring out yer dead!" Flash forward a few sessions, and I get the staff of souls, a Homebrew staff of the magi with all necromancy spells, one of which is animate dead, which if used effectively, allows me to have an additional 24 zombies or skeletons! Along with that, I got a ring of false death, which allows me to appear as an undead and makes normal undead friendly to me so long as i dont break the spell!
The party is wary of my character, but do to the fact that I have not hurt any innocents, they allow me to use my undead, despite the paladins qualms. Now, as I used to be a barbarian, I thought our primary damage dealer was gone, so I was being very cautious in combat. However, as we returned to the station in which we were helping a pack of refugees from the war, a large group of monster bandits, led by a half-giant half-dragon! There was some talk, and it was made clear that these monsters were here to rape and pillage, and as the party was mostly good alights (I being the outliar with NE) we opted to save them. No way we could take this guy, let alone his pack of monsters, so like the good necromancer I am, I summoned my dead. 12 skeletons and one flesh golem exit my portal and we proceed to fight! I go first, lucky since my dex is only a 10, and immediately pound into the giant: dealing a whopping 110 damage! The giant takes a swing at my army, and takes three of them out with a might cleave of his hammer. No matter. The bard goes next and decides to buff my golem, then the paladin charges in and whaps him with his holy power -show off- dealing a good bit of damage the rogue is up and backstabs him with all his might, but sadly misses his attack roll. Then the artificer goes with his science gun, and blasts him with enough force to knock him prone! the druid conjours up a sleet storm to keep him there, and then its my turn again! With a wave of my hand, six skeletons rush up to him and begin to stab him over and over while he is on the ground, brutally killing him and tearing into his flesh, trying to devour every last bit of him.
The horde, seeing this, begin to flee. Apparently they hadnt been expecting a real fight, and were relying on their leader for all the hard work. The towns people are horrified, they hadnt known that a necromancer was among the party, and flee as well, leaving behind the small town deserted. The party had no idea what to do, and simply decided to turn in for the night.... Except for me. I knew exactly what to do! I first when to their graveyard and rose as many dead as i could muster, and sent the skeletons off on their jobs, a few i sent to get lumber, zombies helped them carry it back to town. As i was proficient in carpentry, I make the logs into usable materials and the skeletons to fortify the walls, and build new ones. Undead arent exactly skilled laborers, but with a little guidance they make wonderful free workers! When the party awakens They see new walls, as well as a large number of undead working, and in the center of the town is a new building, a roughly hewn town still under construction.
The party of course asks why I'm doing this, and my reply is simple. "No one lives here any longer, so why not make this our home?" And thats how our adventuring party got their own town! Eventually some newcomers came to the village, and decided to settle. At first they were put off by the undead guard and workers, but soon came to realize that they were simple tools, and paid them no mind. Using some of the new villagers, my tower was make five levels high, reinforced with stone, and beautifully adorned with gems that had been gathered from the mines. All was going smoothly, until a rider came from the nearby kingdom of Astlefall declaring that we had no right to build a hold on the kings land, and that we must speak to the king at once. I gathered my dead into the portal (Now numbering around 50) and went to see the king; alone!
The rider takes me to the kingdom, a whole 3 days travel from my town (now titled Gildengloom) And let me tell you, the kingdom is fantastic, marble walls, large buildings, no poverty, nothing! The entire place is fantastic! So, to the castle I go, almost entirely made of marble, with golden accents. Inside is an impressive throne room with roughly 20 guard lining the walls, all in full plate and wielding spears. The peace talks with the king didnt go so well, he told me using undead in his domain was an affront to the gods and that I must leave and never return... That is until i noticed a fang. The king was a vampire! Having gained much Xp through city management and the occasional battles My character was now level 17. Using my class feature command undead, i tried to takle control of the king and succeeded! The guards of course try to stop me, But I had summoned my horde and was holding them off. I then cast Geas on the king, and commanded him to not resist. I said "You shall answer to me, my city will be free of you and yours, and you may never attack us!" The king immediately told his men to stand down, and I told my army to do the same. The king titled me lord of my own domain, and granted me the city and the lands surrounding it, stating that I am now my own independent nation and could not rely on him for aid in times of war!
And that is the story of how my party became lords of their own city!

was playing my first campaign, was on a quest with one of the squad members to find a missing cat. came across one and had to roll a saving throw (can't remember which stat). both of us succeeded & we decided to take the cat back with us. We found out the cat we had found was not the one we were looking for, & my character ended up keeping it as a companion. Every time someone saw it we had to make a saving throw, this definitely seemed odd to our whole party, but every time we rolled insight we were told its just a really cute cat. Over time we started finding bones in the basement of our building, this wasn't odd until we realized they weren't killed normally (again can't remember why it was odd, I have a poor memory & am surprised I am remembering most of this as it has been two years or more since it ended). The cat grew close to me & often rested over my shoulder (my character was a drow-elf revenant shadow monk who later died through self-sacrifice to blow a mountain fortress on legs upside down, planting it into the ground in order to save a robot race and as a result became a drow-elf revenant were-gnome shadow monk, who had originally been a bone-dragon king in another world before the campaign had even begun (Our DM was really nice & let me have stuff normally others wouldn't)). anyways, we eventually found a beast-master & decided to see if he could tell us anything about this cat of mine. Turns out it wasn't a cat; it was a treacle. I later found out from the DM that he had intended for it to kill me & my other friend & that it was never introduced with the intention of it becoming my companion. I decided to change his name to Marrow after that; since he was pretty much a shape-shifting skull slime, which pretended to be a cat & continued doing so even after we learned what it was. my character still loved it and it loved me (it was even very upset when my character sacrificed himself & was overjoyed when my character came back). I grew pretty attached to it outside of the whole campaign too. it had also fit pretty well with my character to boot. Eventually, I even gave it a collar that allowed me to change its fur into different stuff like fire or lightning. It was a wild campaign. I miss those days. Funny note, my character was also close friends with the paladin in our group & was immune to being damaged by his spells due to the revenant thing being added mid-campaign by me on a whim since he'd been healed before without taking damage, so the DM agreed we could make that a thing for continuity sake (i lucked out there).

I was never subject to such a plot (I mostly DM'd), but my players usually fell for it. I had one group get wise to it when the prince, a total-a^^hole, was "pretending" to be redeemed via his quest with a Dark Knight who became a paladin who got hit with the same light. The party was supposed to "realize" the prince was "pretending" to be a good guy and was working for the fiends taking over the kingdom. They flipped the script and, by doing so, skipped a lot of intrigue chapters in realizing their chamberlain was the puppet master and top enemy of the kingdom... and killing him and the BBE's did not crumble the government, there was the Prince who became an actual paladin to become king. I had to rewrite a lot of stuff... that kingdom was supposed to fall into chaos and the party was supposed to become outlaws because of circumstance and not actual evil. It was supposed to segway to my "Mercenaries" chapter. I had to rewrite what the next chapter was.

Also, I honestly thought that DMs plan all along was to sit you on a throne and then break out a BBEG-attack somewhere far away, so you could not help your friends because of need to restore, rule and protect the kingdom.

This happened in Pathfinder a while back, but it was probably one of my favorite moments.
Our party consisted of a Catfolk Rouge who hates magic, a Human Bard who plays the bagpipes and bangs Daemons, a Half Elf Samurai who is a Dragon in disguise, a Tiefling Druid who fell in love with a Succubus and my character; a Deep One Hybrid Paladin named Matthew Holmes. Matthew is sixty years old and fights with a Greatsword and musket; he also had the second highest HP in the party at 240! The Dragon had 250.
A major trade city had been taken over by a rampaging Daemon Horde and we had been tasked to kill the leadership and scatter the horde. The DM had planned on our party to charge in and get slaughtered by the literal one hundred high level Deamons that lurked inside the houses.
Dear old Matthew walked in by himself and managed to talk his way into the Citadel in the center of the city while the party snuck around and infiltrated the Citadel via the sewer. By the time they got there, they found Matthew calmly pulling his Greatsword out from the Daemon possessed Duke.

In one of the campaigns that I played and had finished, my party goes into a casino-like place in a bar. It was stated that we couldn’t bring ANY weapons in and if we did have any weapons when we went in, we would have to put it near the entrance or get into a fight we couldn’t win (and get kicked out without ever being allowed back in). I had hidden a magical dagger of mine on me because of 2 reasons: One, there was a member of the party who was so quick at starting bar fights that in the opening MINUTE of that same campaign, he started a bar fight and knocked several people unconscious after severely wounding them. I did NOT trust him. Second, I thought things were a bit shady. So, when we were at a gambling table (I don’t know what the game was, it had to do with dragons and cards. I think it was dragonchess) near the entrance our party irl was saying they feel like magic will be used to somehow bring the dragons on the cards to life, as in the campaign that led to that one, we were tricked into serving Tiamat and were all given chromatic wyverns. I said that I have my magical dagger, so I’m not too afraid, but my DM interpreted that as me speaking as my character as we typically try to use a system where we put our hand on our forehead to say we are speaking out of character. The owner of the bar was only a few feet away, definitely able to hear us. He gave us a deal- we could give him something and get kicked out, fight the unwinnable fight, or play a game with him. I had nothing of enough value to give him and didn’t want to potentially die, so I played the game. He said that if I won, then I would just have to give up my magical dagger and get kicked out. If I lost, however, he said we would have to kill the king (these guys aren’t very lawful, if you couldn’t already tell). So the stakes were high. Thankfully, with some luck, I got the card of a “platinum dragon” which I didn’t even know existed (I was very new to d&d back then). I won that fight. Though, just the thought of needing to kill the king or get killed was horrifying.

Okay, here's my story. How my players broke my campaign in the BEST way.
I DM a homebrew super large campaign set in a land called Vaepratia (Vay-a-prar-tia) made up of 33 states. The players were still early in the campaign and within the first state, Estren (E-stren). The group was a Tiefling Wizard, a Tabaxi Cleric, and a Mousefolk Druid. They were backed up by two Tabaxi Rogues, Whicker and Stump. For some needed background, I followed proper naming conventions for the Tabaxi, that they are named after a metaphorical or literal description of their home, or station upon their birth. Whicker's full name, was Whicker Basket by the Door. You can guess his backstory. He was the romantic companion of Stump, a strong, hulking Tabaxi who was named Stump by his old Mistress. The powerful Scarlet Lady. One of the three most powerful people in the land, with the ear of the Queen; the Scarlet Lady ran most of the legitimate and criminal organisations in the entire kingdom, wielding huge political and social power. She would, in fact, be the primary villain of Chapter 2 of the epic story, the players were currently on Chapter 1. Stump had been raised in her care as a slave where he did everything for her, but he was also abused by her in the worst ways you can think of. She called him Stump as an insult, to say that he was too stupid for anything else. He'd escaped years ago, an escape that had led to one of his other friends, a fellow slave, to die. A death he blamed both her and himself for. Whicker had been the only one that had brought joy back to his life.
The group were in a forest that no one enters; those who enter, do not get out. It was known as the Cairnswood. They discovered that the reason no one escaped, was because it was protected by a hidden village full of centaurs, who killed anyone that trespassed in the forest. However, due to a medallion they had from a previous centaur they'd aided in the previous town, they were proven to be friends and allowed to pass through their small town in the middle of the forest, the town of Burkton.
Whilst in the village, they found children had been going missing, and through some clever sleuthing, found a serial-killer centaur among the herd in the form of the tavern owner. He'd been stealing children, defiling them, and murdering them. He claimed to be doing this to protect the herd, so they would never overpopulate, and wouldn't grow beyond the boundaries of the forest that kept them safe from those that would do them harm. The other centaurs were horrified at this. He was subsequently executed by the townspeople.
Unable to handle what had happened, both Stump and Whicker offered to stay within the town, take up the running of the -now ownerless- tavern, and put down better roots for the future of their life. After a tearful goodbye, my players wished them the best and moved on.
The players were avoiding the main road, known as the Purple Road. It was a royal route that threaded its way through all the states of Vaepratia and led to the capital. Paladins, the continents main source of power and guards, used this route as their patrol and travel route often, and thus, they had smartly chosen to avoid the road. Sadly, they couldn't. They needed to cross the road this time on their route. After leaving the forest, they crossed a feed and hid behind a small rise in the ground as they spied the road, making sure the coast was clear.
But it wasn't. The dice favoured a perception check, and they spied an approaching convoy.
The convoy was made up of six paladins on horseback and one on foot at the rear; all escorting a carriage with a crimson insignia on it. One that none of them recognised as they were still new to the area.
They recognised one of the paladins, Brol. He had helped them in the beginning and had originally been assigned to escort them over the purple road after they'd been arrested for xenophobic reasons when they first arrived in the land. Their escape, they'd known, would get him in trouble, but they valued their own safety more and thus had escaped him. He was in manacles when they saw him then, at the rear of the escort.
The Mousefolk was the only one from the country, and thus was not wanted by the guard. He padded over and made small talk with the Paladins, with the aim of finding out if Brol was going to be alright. They didn't like the guy due to him being a paladin, but they didn't want him to come to harm. Through conversation, they found that he was on his way to being punished when they reached their destination with this highly important individual in the carriage.
The intention by me (the DM) was for them to let the carriage pass by, to discover Brol later on, and for this to raise questions. They were, after all, only 3 level 2 characters. And these 6 paladins were all level 5's. They didn't stand a chance.
But my players were not to be hindered in their quest for justice.
    The Tiefling formulated a plan.
First, the tabaxi cleric RAN back to the forest and through it, following the safe paths all the way back into the Centaur town of Burkton. There, he called in the favour they'd garnered from helping their village with the serial-killer. The entire town agreed to come to their aid.
Second, and after waiting 1 minute for the Tabaxi to be well on his way, the druid Mousefolk changed into a horse, ran up to the paladins, turned and KICKED the side of the carriage HARD! Some rolls happened to determine some outcomes... and it worked. The PALADINS GAVE CHASE! Leaving their carriage and chasing the horse hard!
The Mousefolk druid, in horse-form, rolls a crit and manages to outrun the guards, and he RUSHES INTO THE FOREST!
A roll keeps the guards on their tale.
Thirdly, the Tiefling, now left alone with brol, free's him from his cuffs, and after hearing some commotion from the inside of the, no unguarded, carriage. He used magic to freeze the door closed.
Fourthly, the paladins rushed through into the tree's after the runaway horse... and into the arrows of THIRTY centaurs.
The arrows hit, and critted, and tore, and punctured armour easily. They fell, one by one. By a sheer stroke of luck from the dice, the final one left alive on low hp was the leader himself, injured, on one knee, staring up at the centaurs and the small unassuming tabaxi cleric approaching him. The paladin says something disgusting to the cleric, taunting him for the race that he was, and in return, the cleric struck him down with divine wrath.
The paladins they had not even supposed to face, had been defeated without a single loss of life.
The group went back to the carriage, and unfroze the door, opening it. There, staring them in the face, was the Scarlet Lady. Third most powerful person in the entire realm, huge political and social influencer, vastly important to the politics of the entire nation... and now at their mercy.
They considered what to do with her, knowing that if they let her go, there was nowhere her influence could not get them. They had little choice, but they felt her fate did not belong to them. So they locked her in the carriage and took it with them as they once again, ventured back into the forest to the centaur town of Burkton.
They rolled the carriage up to the tavern. They called out Whicker and his companion, and when they were ready. They opened the carriage.
"I'LL HAVE YOUR HEADS!" She screamed, but she was only a woman. An old woman, staring at them with rage-filled eyes as she was surrounded by a tiefling, a tabaxi, a mousefolk, and an entire town of centaurs glaring down at her. She turned towards the tavern, and her eyes locked onto those of one she knew. Stump.
He saw her, and the expression on his face was not one that could easily be described.
"YOU!" She screamed, glaring at him.
"Me." He replied, his voice as cold as still water, with no emotion, no coldness, simply... there. As though he felt he were dreaming.
Whicker turned to his love, a paw on the larger Tabaxi's chest, and said softly, "you don't have to do this. We can go back inside, and go, right now."
Stump could only stare. In her eyes, he saw his life. The death, the whippings, the beatings... the rapes. And the last thing he saw were different eyes other than hers, those of his friend who had ran beside him, eyes he'd seen lose their life as a hail of arrows had skewered his form. This was for him.
    Stump approached the old woman.
"What are you doing?!" She demanded in a confused voice, as though she couldn't believe this had even happened, as though the very thought of it wasn't comprehensible. She backed off, fell over, scrambled away from him. He walked calmly, approaching her step by step, until he lowered his hands to her, wrapped them around her neck... and broke it.
The team left after that, Whicker and Stump still staying behind; and they left with heavier hearts than they'd arrived.
I look back at that moment a lot. My players had broken my second chapter. The political ramifications of her death and disappearance would be huge consequences. The entire second chapter would be altered by the political upheaval. And the direction of the campaign had been forever altered by their decision, to not let a friend meet his fate. But it wasn't just one friend, Brol was not the only one they'd saved that day. For they'd given closure and peace to a Tabaxi, and freed him from his past. Stump would live well and in happiness.
It was the best thing my players could have ever done, and I'd never even considered it an option.

I got to one for you. The game starts off with my orphaned Hal-Orc Barbarian, who has been raised by priests, priestesses, clerics, and monks all dedicated to Bahamut the Platinum Dragon, recieving a divine mission from Bahamut to captured an evil baron who is secretly a priest of Tiamat. I set off on the quest and an Elven Paladin of Bahamut has invited himself along. The Paladin and I travel to the nearby village where the rest of the party is waiting, I recruit them and we go on our merry way. Over the course of three months we face off against the evil baron's minions until we finally come to the castle, we fight and defeat the baron, though Bahamut wants him captured not killed so we knock him out. While I'm retrieving our magical manacles blessed by the priests the Paladin turns from Lawful Good to Lawful Stupid and declared the baron too dangerous to live and lops his head off. I as the player and character am furious, I might be CG, but we had the baron perfectly subdued and the manacles were meant to stop his magic. I quickly scoop the body and head into a bag of holding for resurrection by the priests. We're about level ten by this point and have some pretty good gear, except the Paladin who didn't want to lose his divine protection afforded by his armor. As we travel back the Paladin is bragging how he is the hero and how we should all look up to him. I however have had it, I pull the GM aside and inform him of my displeasure, he says I need to take care of it in game, I say ok. I grab my dice and say, "I wait for night fall and then I wander off on my own for a bit." I then take the DM into another room and say, "I was raised by Priests and Clerics to Bahamut, I want to perform the rites of summoning despite not being a cleric myself I have surely seen them done and know the prayers." He instructs me to roll two D10 and tell him the roll, I roll a natural 100, he instructs me to roll again to see if I summon Bahamut or one of his Golden Wyrms, anything less that a 95 would result in a Gold Dragon, I roll a 99 and summon Bahamut who looks rather miffed at being summoned, I explain the situation and ask the Great Dragon for his permission to fight the Paladin to the Death, roll Persuasion, natural 20, Bahamut not only Grant's his permission but also informs my barbarian that he too is irked with the Paladin and therefore with strip his blessings from the Paladin's gear. I thank Bahamut who promptly disappears. We return to the table where I proceed to drag the Paladin out of his tent and challenge him to a duel right there. He is overconfident and accepts, we fight and I tear him apart like tissue paper, the player doesn't understand what happened, so I explain the events that transpired in the other room, he is pissed and leaves the game, fast forward two months we're now level 15 and I have become a Platinum Knight, a 3.5 Edition Prestige Class, and when I show up the Paladin's player has returned to the table with a new character ready to go. I think he has gotten over his temper tantrum and gameplay begins, within the first five minutes his new character has picked a fight with mine and revealed himself to be a Talon of Tiamar, so basically my polar opposite, now I have bronse dragon wings thanks to the Wings and Permanency spells cast by our resident wizard, black dragon scale armor as we had recently killed a dragon, a great maul made from the femur of a red dragon, and Platinum Knights got breath weapons, I had a line of lightning, his gear was nearly identical to mine, except he carried a longsword made from a gold dragon, his armor was silver dragon scales, his wings were that of a black dragon, and he breathed corrosive gas. Anyway he attacked me and I defended myself, ordering the rest of the party to evacuate the town he and I went at it as hard as we could laying waste to the small village we were in. Eventually both of us had less than 10 hit points and our breath weapons recharged at the same time, he breathed out his gas and I shot my lighting, however I aimed for the gas which the DM said ignited, traveled down the Talon of Tiamat's throat and caused him to explode, again killing his character, the player was pissed cussed me and the dm out and then left never to return. I was quite pleased with myself, and I tell this story to let people know that I have no problem ending your character if you make me angry enough.

I plan a Moon Elf Sorcerer with the dragon blood subclass, he is a character with a pirate background who loves freedom and his curiosity drives him above most other things, His Charisma is his highest stat with wisdom and intelligence falling right behind it, he is smart enough to be able to think through most things he does. It enjoys acting on the impulse enough not too, this had lead him to cause some trouble for the party, the latest is about as following. Every town we go to I goto the library to try and figure things out about town and try to find some rituals for my ritual feat or anymore hints to dragon lairs or the Deck of Many Things of which he has learned its general whereabouts is on the contentment and about where. So I go there, alone, and they don't have anything magic related as it's appearently banned in this town, whatever, still look around the library to find anything of interest and find an entire section about the local baron. This entire section dedicated to him intrigues me as his ego seemed almost as big as my own so I investigated it, with a Nat 20 my character found the secret book to pull to reveal a hidden door, which I attempt to sneak down(my dex is a 10) and happen to natural 1 it and fall down the entire stairwell to where I find myself at a slave trading area with a group of thugs and bandits grinning at the new slave that happened to wander into their hideout 😅

Not quite as epic but in a 4e campaign my brother and I were playing tiefling assassin and swordmage respectively. In the world were in tieflings were myths and legends and our kind worked hard to keep it so, wanting nothing to do with the rest of the world. A select few left the island nation that was our home to snuff out any who had gotten too close to finding out about our home. As such we acted as adventures when not on assignment, good training and a way to hear rumors that’d help on our primary goal. Long story short we were getting a mission from some noble who let slip about research he was conducting into tielfings. So my brother and I snuck back in later, under the pretense of questions about our mission, and found him in a windowless innner room of the (stone) keep that was his office. Being a new campaign we knew better than to try an out and out fight. But a couple bags stuffed to the brim with alchemist fire and a couple nails of sealing worked just fine. We opened the door wide enough that we could both be seen, dropped our magical disguises, smiled, and threw four bulging sack in the room as hard as we could. Slammed shut the door, drove in four nails each, and calmly walked back out.

The sad part is if he didn't transform he could have reasoned with the party to hand over kingdom to him instead with enough bribery idk details but he could have possibly been pushed into doing the contracts to begin with and might have still wanted a life of adventure or whatever

Man one time I was playing as a half teifling ranger with a group of friends. One of the other PCs was a gnome so rightnoffbthe bat our characters didnt get along due to racism. We go to this castle to speak to an old decrepit queen about getting a mission. I had the spell thaumaturgey which amplifies the volume of the spell casters voice. I thought itd be nice to help the old lady hear me better.
    I rolled a 16.
My sudden booming voice filled the chamber halls and scared the poor queen into a heart attack. From which she promptly died.
Within one round I had completely derailed the entire session by accident BEFORE WE COULD EVEN GET STARTED
    We ran
    We killed many, many guards
The dwarf HATED me after that. Our characters argued about what to do. I remember him saying "I dont wanna hear it! You're 3/5ths a person and you killed the queen!"
It was a very fun session. Even more fun, one of our PCs was being played by 2 people. He was a wizard who became possessed by a demon who wasnt very powerful so it just bickered with him and gave him suggestions. Very fun concept

In my party I am the heroic barbarian, well, at least the insanely nigh-unkillable barbarian capable of crushing skulls with one hand (that was a fun intimidation test). We were saved by our insane wizard though, when our ship was caught by magic and reeled towards an island fortress. He used control water to pick the ship up and sent it into the wall

I would have probably just given the Grand Vizier the throne, if he hadn't gone all pit fiend. I mean, Why would I want to rule? I like adventuring! If the pit fiend had like 1hp left, I would have told it as much, then stabbed it in the face.

    • @DolusVulpes
      @DolusVulpes 5 років тому

You probably wouldn't personally rule, with you most likely instead creating a new character with your previous character becoming a new npc and a permanent fixture of the world's history, with the second being pretty cool if your DM is the type to have most campaigns and adventures happen at different points in the history of the same world.

I have once "disarmed" a trap laid by my DM because he was thinking about the things we would do after he got more enemys after me then we could handle and he was thinking we where ether going to fight or hide since that was what we had been doing so far but what I did was run away from the others in my group since the enemys only knew about me and I maneged to clime a cliff wall and escape while the others hid

Saved by a barbarian? Try when some quick-thinking from my Sivak Draco sorcerer (who played mostly melee with magical support for the purposes of causing chaos among my enemies mostly) used his booze addiction to turn a keg of dwarven ale he won in a drinking contest into a molotov that saved my party from a horde of kobalds, while my dwarf pally *dragged* the party half orc barb and gigantic human fighter out of harms way.

I used to play DND with a group of one of my friends but I got kicked out because I missed two sessions I mean if a group actually has strict rules about that kind of thing then I'm fine with it but there was no real schedule for going to the sessions and they just got together on weekends that they agreed on and I mean fine, for them it works but I tend to not really be bothered going unless there is a set schedule as I need a sort of rhythm that I can follow

Well on session I had were I was playing in a every new game with a party of a bard
    me a fighter
    A Barbadian
    Ranger
    Druid
    Cleric
No this story happened as we were in our first boss first to gain level 2 (clearly shows how much of a bad time it was) but we faced a giant undead lizard which was infused with dragon wings to fool anyone into thinking it was a dragon
I was battling and tanking damage for my party with the barbarian but my teammate using spider climb on the near by wall used a recent equipped acid rock which since I was on low health already near the “dragon” she nailed the dragon right on the head ... but I inturned received all the splash damage since the rock exploded and in burnt of my dominant arm which at the time I was wieldly a one armed axe and I was basically useless for the rest of the fight as I was screaming in pain getting healed so I wouldn’t die and in turns getting cover in a invisible cloak so the monster couldn’t see me anymore and then focused on the barbadian at this point we found out what it truly was as the wings were slowly burning off and then we killed it thanks to he Barbadian and I damage

I’ve had enough of devils, demons, and fiends in general being the main big bad all the time. So many campaigns I’ve seen are dealing with the same problem where demons are trying to take over through tactics or war and it pisses me off knowing that you can’t kill them without a doing it on their home turf. Fiends have become like a trope to me.

    • @akedus44
      @akedus44 5 років тому

I think that the correct word to use there is cliche because 'trope' just means anything that's recurring. Have a bad guy in a story as a trope. Having a demon as the bad guy is also, automatically a trope.
Anyhow, nitpicking aside, I believe that the reason why fiends are often the big bad is because they are one of the few high CR monsters who are also intelligent enough to scheme, the other monsters being stuff like beholders and dragons. Except, unlike the others (except liches), fiends get a guaranteed resurrection so...
