Hang Gliding - First Time Learning To Slope Land

  • With my Swiss tandem hang gliding exam coming up in a couple of weeks I needed to practice the ‘fly on the wall’ landing technique. After trying a few I can say it’s a brilliant tool to have under your belt! It’s definitely a little intimidating for the first couple but after that they become really fun. If you are flying around mountains and valleys I would highly recommend you to give it a go!

    I need to learn that too! For any chance of real XC where I live, most pieces of land are hills. This sort of explains why the club distance records for PG are 3x the HG ones. The problem is most spots don’t look ideal for practice/learning.

    Pete, your take offs / landings are excellent, found them very similar to Andrea Ghidini's one - he puts lots of energy to his final before flare and also doing upslope landings to a perfection. I should try upslope landings as well, I believe it is safety and more pilots should be comfortable doing it. Thanks for sharing this video, quite valuable, thanks Pete!

      Thanks for the kind words although Andrea Ghidini landing are on a whole different level 😄. But yeah I think if you are going to be flying around mountains then you should be comfortable doing this type of landing,… and anyway, they are fun!

    Excellent video Pete and really well put together! I'm very impressed - great flying but you've also nailed the editing and especially the sound. Your commentary is fun and makes it interesting. What camera and mic setup are you using?
    BTW - when me and Tim did that top take-off we thought he'd had a dodgy take-off... But yours really takes the biscuit!!! 🤣

      Cheers Darren. Appreciate that 🙂.
      Maybe that’s how i got myself in to that take off position, by taking all the biscuits and upping my wing loading 😂. It’s a tough launch at the best of times!

    Smithy's right - a light wind FOTW is easier than on the flat. I did one half way up the Crown Range once to get better distance than everyone who landed on the Terrace. In the UK I sometimes did a test flight which consisted of a takeoff, hands-off trim test , a 180 and FOTW. By the time you've done a couple of dozen the nerves will go. On a single surface you need to be over generous with speed on the way in so as to have some left for a good strong flare. Looking good already ☺

    Views while flying in Switzerland are postcard perfect. Nice landings. What’s that old saying “takeoffs are optional but landings are mandatory”.

      Trust me, around the 7:45 point I definitely didn’t feel like take off was going to be an option 😂

    Awesome! Seems you did better on your first (alone) ones than when being watched. It happens. Is that Peter Neuenschwander flying with you? Quite the amazing pilot, that one!!! Would be nice if you posted his fly on the wall landings as well if you caught them on your camera, at least I for one would like to see the Aeros doing it.
    I wouldn't mid a summer in Interlaken!!! Maybe one day I'll do what you're doing. Keep up the good video, less airtime fortunate pilots like myself nowadays need something to drool all over LOL

      It is the man himself yes! I obviously couldn’t take the pressure of his watchful eye 😂. Unfortunately I didn’t get any decent shots of his landings. As for summers in Interlaken, I’m only a couple of weeks in and I can’t recommend it enough!

    Phheeeeewww Pete that launch was gnarly! Looked like the glider yawed on you pretty hard too - was there a cross from the right or something? Would love to hear your take and analysis on it!

    • @petehelliwell
      @petehelliwell  2 роки тому

      It wasn’t the best launch ever that’s for sure. It is a shallow launch to start with so I was been extra careful. Also the pilot that went before me did exactly the same thing. We had about 10 minutes between launches. The wind was straight up but light. Yes the glider yawed a bit, maybe there was something from the side that non of the wind socks picked up on. Or maybe I just ran out of skill right at the worst time.

    Thanks for this very educational video. Quick question - what do you recon is a good trick for launching on flat slopes without pushing out/stalling?

    • @petehelliwell
      @petehelliwell  2 роки тому +2

      Firstly don’t do what I did at the 7:45 point in the video 🤦🏼‍♂️.
      But actually, some things that can help on the shallow launches. A loose grip on the down tubes is important, You don’t want to have them in a tight grip. That’s a good way to transition your weight in to the glider at the wrong point of the take off and you can loose the feeling of the glider as it starts to fly. You want to feel the pressure of the down tubes wanting to move forward in your fingers. Another thing I like to do is stand nice and upright and progress in to the run with 3-4 slow steps first. The slow bit sounds a bit backwards but it will help to prevent the nose from popping up and helps keep your body posture upright as you accelerate, obviously you’re going to need to follow that up by running like f*ck!!

      @@petehelliwell I really appreciate the info. I try and collect as much data as possible. What you say makes sense to me. I’ve been watching others launch at that spot and I always wondered how they do it, as it seems really shallow to me. We have a similar launch near here, a place called Chelan. It gives me butterflies just thinking about it. I’ve also been told big strides.
