As a prior HG instructor, I recommend having your hands higher for the flare and flaring up towards the nose! Your flight reminded me of my flights there 27+ years ago.
Your landings will be better if you get your hands higher up on the downtubes where you have some authority. If you ever land with a slight tailwind, you’ll thank me😜👍
Thanks. I am using an iPhone app (free version) called "Wingman" as my vario for now. The .GPX data that I use for my overlay comes from my GoPro's built in GPS sensor. I wrote some PYTHON code (matplotlib mostly) to create the overlay as a series of .png's and then import that into Premier Pro as a sequence. I plan to upload the code to GitHub at some point, there are a few things I want to tweak to make it slightly easier to use first.
@@j2dagriffs Thanks, you are improving at an amazing rate. Great videos. I used to fly HG in the '70s and switched to PG but miss the control HGs have.
I love that LZ. It’s big. Clear of obstacles. Can land from any direction. Green most of time which makes it inviting. Plus- I’m not a big fan of hitchhiking in the desert, or waiting for hours for a ride. So why not just fly around launch for an hour or so and go land out front? Makes sense to me. I’m Tracy btw.
Man, this takes me back!!! In '76 I flew off the Whitney Portal Rd. down into the Owens Valley a few miles north of here. My first (and last) big mountain flight, no rating, no instructor, not even an established launch site. Sketchy launch followed by a smooth sledder all the way down to land on the side of the road, narrowly missing a Winnebago coming the other way. Amazing what a 20 year old with ADHD will try. Now I'm starting up again at 69, but in a legit training program. Blue skies, bro!
What a nice place!!! Cool happineas shouts!! ahah.. Probably your smoothest flight, smooth air. Nice cooments about what goes through your mind, also about equipment ajustments e body positioning. 🤙
That awesome. You know, about 3 days ago a very experienced paraglider pilot pulled off a triangle over 300km launched from Walt’s, flew up to the whites and white mountain peak and flew back down to lone pine. 10 hours in the air, getting to over 17k’ absolutely incredible stuff.
Just curious why you didn't land at Diaz lake just south of Lone Pine? Nice big area just next & south of the lake and an easy glide. Usually good thermals are at Walts Point, where you launched, and would be a few 1000 over in just a few minutes. A single point hang harness is way more aerodynamic than all those strands/cords. I always liked my CG 1000 harness. I'm not sure if they're still made, but each one is custom made for your body.
We checked out that LZ at Diaz Lake! Looks like a nice spot, Tracy's is much larger and easier to get to from Walt's. Since this was my first time in the area Willy recommended going for Tracy's to keep it safe. Definitely could have thermaled if I launched a little later, plan for this flight was to just sled ride down so landing conditions where nice and manageable. I can't find anything recent on the CG1000, I am guessing they are no longer produced. I had considered going for a single point but was recommended away from that for my first harness since they are more expensive and harder to land (or so I am told).
thank you for sharing your adventures and understanding the thermal I'm reading fifty ways to fly better from Bruce goldsmith and understanding the sky and it's so great how long we take to understand how movements go in our flight, now i understand that really we need patient and time and fly, fly, fly baby fly. keep storing your memories here where i can see it hahaaaa.
@@j2dagriffs bruce goldsmith made that book but it’s more toward paragliding but is one better that call understanding the sky it’s made for hanhliding, paraglider, seaplanes and for paramotor great basics of thermals formation, developments of different cells and weather complete explaining microclimate, thunderstorms formation and plus, cross country magazine you can find so much interesting books
Yeah a few SB pilots flew on this day. I was the first to launch. Another H2 launched about 15 minutes after me. The rest of the H4 pilots (mostly from SB) launched about an hour after me when conditions started to turn on a little more.
You’re gonna love that glider… I know I do 😁🦅 What a nice place to fly at! Next time, if you know you have the altitude, do some 360 clearing turns and show off the area please👍

Thanks for the tip!

Copy! Every time I land in my head I think "okay my hands are super high" and then I watch the video and they are super low haha.
@@j2dagriffs you simply aren’t hi enough brother
So much altitude on thermal conditions. You will stay up for a long time. Just wait. Where is your vario? Did not see any mounted on frame.
Just ordered one! Was just using a phone app for this flight.
How far is the drive from LZ to launch at Owens? Do you live near Owens?
It was about 30 minutes to launch. Nice road too. I’m about 4 hours from the Owens
looks amazing. how you putting the stats on the video and what vario you using?

NO WAY! Thanks for picking a great spot to land :)

Blue skies! Good luck with re-training, hope to see you out there.
Get a vario
Finally have one! It’s in my next video.

Thanks! Yeah extremely smooth air made for a very enjoyable experience on this one.

That's epic!
16th mountain flight and you're already flying at a H4 site, friggin amazing. Keep it up dude!
Thank you!!

You’re gonna love that glider…
I know I do 😁🦅
What a nice place to fly at!

Will do!
Around 13:20 I do a 360 that gives a pretty good view of the area!
I forgot to ask where is this place?
When I start to drag a hang glider on my car, I’m making a list of places I want to fly at. 😁👍✈️
…I dig the multiple cam shots too. I use only a single Insta 360 x3 cam (which is awesome).
18:27 That feeling after an epic flight! haha love it. Nice work and great videos mate
Thanks!
What a Magic flight at a Magic site! 🤩
That flare was wayyyy better than the previous one. Well done Mate! 👍
Thank you!
Fuck yeah! Awesome! & thank u for showing me the bailout! Everyone’s videos are like 100 miles, but what happens if u sink out? Now I know.😅
Haha no problem! Gotta keep it real.
