They would all ask because I had a spinal cord injury which required me to be off work for almost 3 year, then I attended college Because workers comp was going to retrain me for another career. So I was jobless for almost 5 years. That's a huge gap in work history so they all would ask me why there is such a big gap. I ended up getting a job With the city though.

Hi Andrew, I'm using your Ultimate Template and right now I'm working on a resume for Farmers Insurance, but anyways, I have a question about the gap. I took off time to declutter and organize my home. This was Sept. 2019. I gave 2 weeks notice to my job of almost 8 years on very good terms. They would have taken me back if the events of 2020 did not hit and destroy their business. Anyway, first it was to declutter and organize and take a break after losing my husband to pancreatic cancer ( I cared for him for the 6 months and the surgery and everything but he died on hospice in my home with me holding his hand) and then a parent died each year after that and then handling my parents estate in AZ as executor (I sold their house, did everything..360 miles away.) ALL while I was working full time and had a teenage daughter. I feel like maybe I should put it on my resume that from Sept. 2019 to Present I have been organizing and overseeing contract work on my home which involved choosing finishes, flooring, kitchen remodel, roof, painting, new appliances, making many purchases, and managing the decluttering and reorganizing of my home...maybe I could make some of that something to put on my resume? I mean I learned a lot about home remodeling and what it takes to do all these things. And since I was a widow with a 20 year old.. I had no one else to help me so it took a long time and it was a lot of work and I hurt my back many times I could have gotten worker's comp if I was working for somebody!! Several times. LOL I'm trying to think outside of the box here to see what might be possible. My idea: MY HOME, Camarillo, CA Jan. 2021 - Present Home Remodel Supervisor and Laborer Hands on, sole boss/supervisor, and partial laborer, in the 95% remodel of my HOA home after the loss of my spouse to cancer. Gained experience in all things related to home remodeling. (I could skip 2020 as everyone knows we were on lockdown, etc.)

Hello, this was very helpful. I have been taking care of my only sister who had COPD for over seven years. She passed on in late 2017. I was taking all kinds of on line classes in coding and web design. But, now I just want to get back into the work force. My wife of 35 years is a Nurse Practitioner which is why I was able to take time off and take care of my sister all this time. I've been so worried about how to fill-in this gap. Overthinking every possible question and how to answer it in an interview about my resume to the point of being paralyzed! Anyway, thank you for this video. Thank you Andy for making people like us feel at ease about gaps, mine huge!! All other video's talk about maybe a one or two year gag, which is frightening to hear. I had been taking care of my elderly parents for years. Now my gap has gone on too long but I gained a lot of experience in many different areas but not sure how to fit it onto a resume. I'm a 60 yo woman changing careers. I feel like that's 4 strikes against me right there. I need help bad but with no money!! UGGHHH!!😬
It's clear that you needed/wanted input on all of what you stated here, but he just address the first couple of lines with a, "you're welcome." Didn't seem he read the rest. They did a number of things while out of work and now know what they want to do going forward, after previously working at jobs that they were not very much into. How can they mention that on their CV?
I would approach it as I outlined in this video. I would not over explain it. Simply say you’re returning to work after being off to care for a medical issue Which has now been completely resolved.

I tried to add a career break section in my resume: Career Break-Professional Development.....year to year • Enrolled into X University as a full-time student I've had some good feedback from recruiters, but it just looks a bit odd to me since my education section is also listed on my resume. I think it's just a waste of space. What are your thoughts on this?
Another question. What if you were paid the same salary to care for I’ll parents? I ended up saving them about $3,800 a month by taking my father out of elderly care home by having them pay me what I was making and also allowing him to be cared for with love and respect. This allowed him to pass at his own home. Then eventually had my mother move in with me and continued to receive payment for her care. She had dementia. And has recently passed. Should this be on resume? It was an honor for me to be able to care for them.
Kelly Brackett first off, sorry for your losses. You sound like an angel and I’m sure you are! I would not put any of that in the resume. In this case, less is more. Just let future employers know you’re good to roll. I have a feeling you’re going to land on your feet with cushy slippers. People like you always do. :)

Sullivan, I'd have one sentence at the end of my career profile that stated returning to the workforce after a six year retirement. That's it. I wouldn't over explain it. They'll see that your last year of employment was six years ago. Lots of luck!
So my gap has been since August to present. Mine is from migraines and getting medical attention so it doesn't interfere with my job anymore. After testing, meds, I am ready to go back into work force. How do you explain medical issues which can be a touchy subject?
Ann, don't go into the detail. Just say what you said to me here, but don't mention specifically what the ailment was. Just say, I was out for a bit with a medical ailment, but we've found the proper treatment and it's no long an issue. I'm ready to go back now!
This is the reason why so many people start their own businesses rather than dealing so many ins and outs of looking for a new job. A recruiter wanted to drop by pay by $10 becauseI was unemployed and looking for a new job. I had a great reason for this, but I after speaking to the recruiter, I was ashamed to be unemployed. Truly disgusted by him.
Hey Andrew, Jen here. I like your suggestion to explain gaps and reason(s) in the cover letter. Can keep it short and sweet that way. I also have a blurb on my resume that states: "Much of my work on island consisted of sewing for private clients, and various odd jobs. I am happy to supply further information upon request. Hello Andy, I took your advice and I quit last week! It feels great but I have a few questions. First, what is a functional resume and how is that different from your ultimate resume format (profile/highlight/history)? I got worried when you said “you will be hiding something”. I followed your ultimate resume guide, which ties into my main question below. Second. Before I resigned, I have submitted applications. My resume still shows that I still am currently employed (for those apps). I have received 2 interview schedules after I resigned. How do I address this properly? My new resume is updated now, but I don’t want to make it seem that I lied to the interviewer because my employment gap is so recent (4 days). My first interview is tomorrow so any insight before then will help. Thank you!
Tan, good for you. 1. Don't worry about it. If you don't know what a functional resume is, don't clutter your head with learning it. Go with my format you downloaded. 2. When you speak with the new companies, let them know you resigned. It'll be fine. You can give them a new resume too if you want. They probably won't need it. 3. Good luck. Knock em dead! Thank you for the advice. I was in a quandary on whether I should include a current part-time job in my resume. However, it is totally unrelated to my current profession of technical publications and electromechanical design. It would be a several steps down from what I've done before. Right now, I'm not including it. I have been a notable success in that part time job, though.
What a great video It made me feel better after I watched it, I’m commenting on this 4-year-old video but I have been having anxiety because I don’t know how to address my 5-year employment gap. After all, I moved to another country and improved my English skills, culture, and all of the stuff that takes when you move to another country. Also, my lack of work authorization for almost 4 years because of the pandemic. I am a chemical engineer planning to return to the workforce. I have been applying for jobs for almost 5 months must entry-level jobs. After I got married 3 years ago I started to help my husband who owns a roofing company, At the end of last year I got my green card, and at the same time I completed a Six Sigma Green Belt course and I got my certification this year. My question is can I list a career break section in my resume where I highlight accomplishments during this time as working for my husband’s company? Or just explain it on the cover letter. I've "LaCivita'd" my resume and removed my 8-year job gap (eldercare, parenting, return/graduation from college) from the resume itself. You advise addressing any gaps in the cover letter. So many job boards/websites don't have a field to submit a cover letter or explanatory comments. I hesitate to create a cover letter as a page one of my resume. What should I do?
Lisa, thanks for the huge chuckle! I knew if I worked hard enough my name could become a verb! LOL. At the end of your career profile, simply put a statements that says....Returning to the workforce after an eight-year period of family caretaking...or something like that. that'll do the trick and it'll be totally "LaCivita'd" then!

I worry that mentioning illness at all will make employers think you're an added risk factor, even if that's not true. What was it, does it still affect your health, will it come back etc.?
Life does happen. I have been unemployed for roughly 8 months by choice to care for a parent who is now deceased. Following his passing there was a period of time in which estates and other issues needed resolution. Would this be an appropriate thing to share with a potential employer? It feels a bit personal to share professionally. Thank you in advance for your response.

Hi, Andrew. I would like your advice about my situation. I'm currently unemployed and job hunting. I have a bachelor's in management and following graduation, I suffered an illness. On my resume I have a 2 year gap due to illness followed by a 1 year Administration Assistant position from Jan 2018- Dec 2018. My issue is that this was an unpaid position. My sister is owner of the company and asked me to help part-time with her small business while I was still recovering. I did and was in charge of writing bid proposals for local govt jobs (we won some small contracts worth $25k total), communicating with customers, and other admin duties. The reason I didn't ask for a salary is because the business is only in it's 3rd year and I wanted to help it grow (some of profits were used to buy more equipment to expand for this year). Plus, I was still recovering. This year, my sister quit her old job and has taken over control of all admin & managerial duties so I wasn't needed for this year. Do you think I should mention this was an unpaid position in an interview? I know they do employment history checks so I'm trying to figure out my best strategy on how to spin this?? It is a real business that can be verified. Do you think I can possibly compete for entry level managerial roles with all these gaps? Thank you for your videos. What if you are returning after surgery and you are looking for a job in healthcare? One would think that those in healthcare would be understanding to candidates who had surgery, but, it is quite merciless. I have witnessed candidates being dismissed for disclosing resolved health issues. I am thinking along the lines of "I took time off to improve myself and now I am ready to work." It is vague but to point: I am ready to work. What is your take?

You list you skills by title instead of aligning them to the companies where your attained them. It’s confusing when an employer reads it because they can’t see your work history in a chronological fashion.
My wife received her green card back in June and arrived here then. Ever since she's been unable to secure anything much less any initial inquiries. She worked for reputable companies like HP in Taiwan and can't even get HP here to consider here. It's depressing as hell. Her employment gap is just getting worse
Chris Jones my (unsolicited) advice would be to have her be as busy as possible. Interning, volunteering, taking a course full time, anything. When she does get her work permit she will be more confident as she’s been active.

It sounds like work experience that you are simply not getting paid for. If that's the case, I would put it in the work experience section. it's okay that you are not getting paid for it. keep it up high!
what should I do I have a large gaps. I have been applying and I have always been interview but not never accepted. the HR or Manager tells me why don't you have a job. I can't answer "because I don't have a job, they never call me or email me". I just lie and lie. Right now I'm still applying for my field. I even applying for a lower position just to get a job
Hi Andy, I would not recommend that because if you are successful in attaining employment The employer will run a background check on you and notice that your resume is not accurate.
Couldn't wait to get home to tell you about the job interview I just had. Wish it was good news but it was prob one of my worst. She asked about the gaps (which the longest is 3 months & there aren't many). Not only did she keep cutting me off but she gave me absolutely no option to ask any questions!! It felt quit insulting & the whole thing lasted shorter than the amount of time i sat & waited for her to come in the lunch room. Sullivan, I'd have one sentence at the end of my career profile that stated returning to the workforce after a six year retirement. That's it. I wouldn't over explain it. They'll see that your last year of employment was six years ago. Lots of luck!

So my gap has been since August to present. Mine is from migraines and getting medical attention so it doesn't interfere with my job anymore. After testing, meds, I am ready to go back into work force. How do you explain medical issues which can be a touchy subject?
Ann, don't go into the detail. Just say what you said to me here, but don't mention specifically what the ailment was. Just say, I was out for a bit with a medical ailment, but we've found the proper treatment and it's no long an issue. I'm ready to go back now!
This is the reason why so many people start their own businesses rather than dealing so many ins and outs of looking for a new job. A recruiter wanted to drop by pay by $10 becauseI was unemployed and looking for a new job. I had a great reason for this, but I after speaking to the recruiter, I was ashamed to be unemployed. Truly disgusted by him.
Hey Andrew, Jen here. I like your suggestion to explain gaps and reason(s) in the cover letter. Can keep it short and sweet that way. I also have a blurb on my resume that states: "Much of my work on island consisted of sewing for private clients, and various odd jobs. I am happy to supply further information upon request.

I think that’s okay Jen! Keep the first person pronouns off the resume. Otherwise it’s good.
What about if my gaps in employment is because I have developed significant medical issues which are still present?
Hello Andy, I took your advice and I quit last week! It feels great but I have a few questions. First, what is a functional resume and how is that different from your ultimate resume format (profile/highlight/history)? I got worried when you said “you will be hiding something”. I followed your ultimate resume guide, which ties into my main question below.
Second. Before I resigned, I have submitted applications. My resume still shows that I still am currently employed (for those apps). I have received 2 interview schedules after I resigned. How do I address this properly? My new resume is updated now, but I don’t want to make it seem that I lied to the interviewer because my employment gap is so recent (4 days).
My first interview is tomorrow so any insight before then will help. Thank you!

1. Don't worry about it. If you don't know what a functional resume is, don't clutter your head with learning it. Go with my format you downloaded.
2. When you speak with the new companies, let them know you resigned. It'll be fine. You can give them a new resume too if you want. They probably won't need it.

Thank you for the advice. I was in a quandary on whether I should include a current part-time job in my resume. However, it is totally unrelated to my current profession of technical publications and electromechanical design. It would be a several steps down from what I've done before. Right now, I'm not including it. I have been a notable success in that part time job, though.
What a great video It made me feel better after I watched it, I’m commenting on this 4-year-old video but I have been having anxiety because I don’t know how to address my 5-year employment gap. After all, I moved to another country and improved my English skills, culture, and all of the stuff that takes when you move to another country. Also, my lack of work authorization for almost 4 years because of the pandemic. I am a chemical engineer planning to return to the workforce. I have been applying for jobs for almost 5 months must entry-level jobs. After I got married 3 years ago I started to help my husband who owns a roofing company, At the end of last year I got my green card, and at the same time I completed a Six Sigma Green Belt course and I got my certification this year. My question is can I list a career break section in my resume where I highlight accomplishments during this time as working for my husband’s company? Or just explain it on the cover letter. About my certification, I know that I can list it in the education section. I Hope you see my comment 😊😅

I've "LaCivita'd" my resume and removed my 8-year job gap (eldercare, parenting, return/graduation from college) from the resume itself. You advise addressing any gaps in the cover letter. So many job boards/websites don't have a field to submit a cover letter or explanatory comments. I hesitate to create a cover letter as a page one of my resume. What should I do?
Lisa, thanks for the huge chuckle! I knew if I worked hard enough my name could become a verb! LOL. At the end of your career profile, simply put a statements that says....Returning to the workforce after an eight-year period of family caretaking...or something like that. that'll do the trick and it'll be totally "LaCivita'd" then!

I worry that mentioning illness at all will make employers think you're an added risk factor, even if that's not true. What was it, does it still affect your health, will it come back etc.?
Then don’t mention it. They’ll ask why you have a gap. You need some type of response.
How about adding projects we worked on during training if we don't have enough real-life experience?

Life does happen. I have been unemployed for roughly 8 months by choice to care for a parent who is now deceased. Following his passing there was a period of time in which estates and other issues needed resolution. Would this be an appropriate thing to share with a potential employer? During the gap, I have been working on portfolios and developed computer skills that are irrelevant to the job I'm currently applying for. I was just laid off this month after 14 years. I am looking for a job immediately. Can I put I was laid-off anywhere on my actual resume? A cover letter may not be reviewed in the types of jobs I am applying for.
I wouldn’t suggest putting laid off. There’s no need to. If you’d like, you can explain that in an interview!

What if you encountered an injury that caused you to be out of work for a year or more ? Would it be wise to explain that reason in a cover letter?
Just mention you were out of work for a personal injury but are now fully healed to return!
Hi, Andrew. I would like your advice about my situation. I'm currently unemployed and job hunting. I have a bachelor's in management and following graduation, I suffered an illness. On my resume I have a 2 year gap due to illness followed by a 1 year Administration Assistant position from Jan 2018- Dec 2018.
My issue is that this was an unpaid position. My sister is owner of the company and asked me to help part-time with her small business while I was still recovering. I did and was in charge of writing bid proposals for local govt jobs (we won some small contracts worth $25k total), communicating with customers, and other admin duties.
The reason I didn't ask for a salary is because the business is only in it's 3rd year and I wanted to help it grow (some of profits were used to buy more equipment to expand for this year). Plus, I was still recovering. This year, my sister quit her old job and has taken over control of all admin & managerial duties so I wasn't needed for this year.
Do you think I should mention this was an unpaid position in an interview? I know they do employment history checks so I'm trying to figure out my best strategy on how to spin this?? It is a real business that can be verified. Do you think I can possibly compete for entry level managerial roles with all these gaps? Thank you for your videos. I'm slowly getting my confidence back during this hard job search.

What if you are returning after surgery and you are looking for a job in healthcare?
One would think that those in healthcare would be understanding to candidates who had surgery, but, it is quite merciless. I have witnessed candidates being dismissed for disclosing resolved health issues.
I am thinking along the lines of "I took time off to improve myself and now I am ready to work."
It is vague but to point: I am ready to work.
What is your take?

What is a functional resume
You list you skills by title instead of aligning them to the companies where your attained them. It’s confusing when an employer reads it because they can’t see your work history in a chronological fashion.
My wife received her green card back in June and arrived here then. Ever since she's been unable to secure anything much less any initial inquiries. She worked for reputable companies like HP in Taiwan and can't even get HP here to consider here. It's depressing as hell. Her employment gap is just getting worse
Chris Jones my (unsolicited) advice would be to have her be as busy as possible. Interning, volunteering, taking a course full time, anything. When she does get her work permit she will be more confident as she’s been active.

It sounds like work experience that you are simply not getting paid for. If that's the case, I would put it in the work experience section. it's okay that you are not getting paid for it. keep it up high!

what should I do I have a large gaps. I have been applying and I have always been interview but not never accepted. the HR or Manager tells me why don't you have a job. I can't answer "because I don't have a job, they never call me or email me". I just lie and lie. Right now I'm still applying for my field. I even applying for a lower position just to get a job

Hi Andy, I would not recommend that because if you are successful in attaining employment The employer will run a background check on you and notice that your resume is not accurate.

Couldn't wait to get home to tell you about the job interview I just had. Wish it was good news but it was prob one of my worst. She asked about the gaps (which the longest is 3 months & there aren't many). Not only did she keep cutting me off but she gave me absolutely no option to ask any questions!! It felt quit insulting & the whole thing lasted shorter than the amount of time i sat & waited for her to come in the lunch room. If you haven't already, can you please share on the dreaded question "why did you leave this job"? Dreaded for me at least. As always, thank you for your knowledge. 🙏
P.S. She also asked me straight out what I made on my last job. I just blurted out what the amount was!😟 Immediately felt like "what just happened!?"
