Fascinating, thanks! I myself study urban planning, and in my spare time I play city skylines. I always try to incorporate in the cities I build the principles that I learn, and maybe when I get to work as an urban planner one day, I can also do the same thing only in reverse
People have posted videos onto UA-cam for far, far less. Obviously it's entirely up to you what content you want to publish and you have your own standards, but if you ever want to make anything less serious or take things casually don't hesitate to do so. We're all your fans and just want to watch your channel grow! I mainly play planet coaster and parkitect now (thanks to you), but I still enjoy any video that gives insight into your creative process. I think the word amazing is thrown around so casually nowadays that it's lost its meaning, but really Silvarret, when I say that your work is amazing I mean that it's truly phenomenal.

hi silvarret! this series is a blessing, because i love cities skylines, and i'm working on a schoolproject where i'm using cities skylines as well, so I can get a lot of inspiration and information from your upcoming series. i've read your thesis as well, and it was very interresting :)
Woaw It's really nice to see my own city in city skylines :D It's really interesting to see the layout from above (and how it's actualy don't really work with the dynamic of the game xp the trafic would be a nightmare...but like reality I guess :p) The only downside is the flatness of your city while Brussels is nothing but a flat city :p but I guess it would be really difficult to recreate. (but when you see in reality the difference of level between the royal plaza (place royale) and the Grand place...it's also a big part of the city shape :) ) Anyway your thesis is really interesting and I'm eager to see the next videos of this series! (btw I worked in retail in Brussels for 4 years and a half...and the main languages I was speaking with my customers were french and english :p When I started, I sucked both in english and in flamish. After 4 years, I was mostly fluent in english but still sucked in flamish ^^" There is just not enough dutch people to practice and become fully bilingual in Brussels...)
I actually imported the terrain from geodata, so the hills should be more or less the same - it's just not that noticeable (but you definitely notice it around the palais de justice area!)
Nice to see Brussels in city skyline! I did the Urban geography master (Dutch) at the VUB a few years back. I'll for sure use this in my classes (high school). I'm very interested in maybe using the game in classes.
There are a few university courses around the world that use the game, but I'm sure it'd work especially well in a highschool settings! It can really visualize real-life planning concepts in a simplified version quite well, I think.
I can relate to the feeling of thinking your niche gaming thesis topic may be laughed out of the academy, I wrote mine on using Dungeons & Dragons to teach literacy in elementary school. Nice video, very relaxing even tho I have never played city skyline. I live in Schaerbeek and I love this city. Sometimes is ugly sometimes is amazing, but I guess this is what gets me ahaha. All these years living there I am still wandering in some neighbourhoods and discovering completely new parts interesting to see (garden cities like Terdelt La roue etc..) or just some little gems here and there. I have lived in woluwe before and in general i love the amount of parks. You can be in the richest or in the poorest neighbourhood but you're likely find a well kept park somewhere nearby. Without mentioning the big ones like Bois De la cambre and Josaphat, Laeken etc... Anyway, it is definitely not a monumental city as other european capitals, but i feel it's very unique in a way and as you said, the fact that some people identify it as the EU capital, kinda misrepresents the city. Bureaucracy at its worse here but it works, somehow. Could work better😂, but it's Belgium ahahah

I have been working on a concept to visualize urban development topics, especially regarding traffic simulations, using Cities: Skylines as i have been hooked on the game for the last YEARS. 1. What is the purpose or history of such strange road layout? 2. Why did You draw 3 tracks paralel and not used an asset of 2 lanes with a tram? 3. Would such road layout work in a game traffic simulation scenario? 4. Is thecity seriously THAT flat? :)
1. It just grew that way over time, organically - although the noticeable pentagon of roads in the middle of the city is actually the outline of the old city walls! 2. That's due to the automatically imported roads from OSM importer - might change that later. 3. Not really, honestly :') 4. They don't call Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg together the Low Countries for nothing! (Although brussels is sliiightly hilly)
Can this map be downloaded on the steam workshop? I want to fix the traffic because that always get really bad. Something to do with north and south and different views and politician... . Well its complicated just like Belgium itself.

I've been planning to (for years, admittedly), do a Dutch planned city series, focused around Dutch spatial planning concepts. I've already outlined some episode themes, just need to find the time/motivation/specs to make it. One day!
Fun fact: I live in Rotterdam now, I know the city pretty well! I'd love to remake it - if I had the time that is, I'd rather try to build my own Dutch city design.
