Truly a work of art, Lee! Great video!!
Thanks, Phil!!!!! I have always appreciated your support! 😊
heyo Phil!
ABSOLUTELY!!😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
When we getting Ep2 👀👀
am watching your video on my PC rn
Funny thing is, this is the calmest, most practiced 20 minute challenge I've seen. And it's a tutorial! 🙂
Thanks for pointing that out, Dean! 😊
Man I wish you posted here more often. Out of all the C:S vids on UA-cam, yours are my favorite.
I wish I did too! Thanks so much for your kind words! I’m flattered!
That was really good, well done Lee 👍😁
Thank you my dear sir! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
we need the next ep asap
…and who are you? 😅
Did you think this lived up to its billing? Let me know! It’s at least the best video I’ve done for starting a city…for whatever that’s worth lol 😂
If you enjoyed this video...go check out MORE MONEY LESS TRAFFIC where I start out with a video on CITY LAYOUT!

Quick question do you play with traffic set to not DeSpawn? I'm trying to get better moving into this style of play.
I liked it - the title made a promise that you kept! :D I would have used the curvature of the river to guide the parallel street though^^. I'm looking foreward for your next episode.
@@tatebevan9912 the TMPE mod is required to turn off despawning, and this (so far) is a fully vanilla build. I will keep despawning off in my Reddington series once I get to the automobile era.
@@wurfelumdiewelt5301 I have my reasons for why I built the way I built 😁 just trying to keep things simple for now.
Fantastic! I love the fast pace. For me, the hardest part of the game are the big decision points and planning, which don't need real time speed. A 20 minute video like this is so much easier to digest than 120 minutes of live gameplay.
And that is exactly why I made it this way. I cover all of this in a playthrough series…but I wanted something shorter and more concise…this is the result. I have other videos that dig deeper into game mechanics and strategies.
I'm building a city right now. What I have found is that if you want an interesting road layout, start of with a couple of small towns and link them up with main roads. As your city grows, keep these main roads clear of any buildings. You can do that by fencing them off. That really seems to have done wonders for traffic. And then, when your 5 towns become one city, I put my CBD in the middle, and where the grids clash, you get to come up with fascinating solutions.
What’s a CBD
@@shaunonlyplaysyt9879 Central Business District. Usually where your tall offices go.
@@Hannodb1961 thanks
I keep starting over in cities skylines testing out new road layouts and grid designs. Over and over. :)
I'm kind of looking for some repeatable pattern, that looks random, but isn't. Has a decent balance of buildings and open spaces for parks and services etc. and how to connect it to main roads.
Kind of my great white whale to chase now. :D
...
Anyways, more on topic to your idea I once started a map completely unlocked, deleted all high ways and rail roads and slowly started filling it in, with how I imagined the area would have developed over time.
It was a sort of mental exercise.
External connections would loosely represent ancient trading routes through the area.
Protected natural harbors on the coast would become small fishing villages or trade harbors.
Flat farmland would become farming villages.
Villages around forest industry or ore.
Roads would link the towns up and villages would spring up at cross roads servicing travelers.
Etc.
Of course this requires infinite money and everything unlocked, but there's a mod to make maps of the roads and trains and stuff in the game I think, so maybe that was an idea to make a historical run of cities skylines?
Speaking of which, don't forget the roundabouts! I put them into my very crowded city a little late and realized I should've been doing it sooner. Also add sliplanes just to help if things are backing up
Always an instant click when I see you've put out a new C:S vid! I really enjoyed the style here. Good pacing, lots of good info, and very clearly presented. Thanks!
Thanks so very much! I especially appreciate the feedback!
Yep, him and City Planner Plays are the only two CS UA-camrs I watch.
Dude, you make the absolute best CS vids and tutorials! Please keep the content coming! Been awhile since I've had the pleasure of watching you ace this game 😁
Thanks so much! I’m so glad you enjoy my videos 😊
we want part 2! make this a series please
So happy to see that you don't shy away from multiway intersections. They look good in game, and AI navigates them surprisingly well. :)
Those are hallmarks of old fashioned cities! They all get removed or never built because of cars…but they’re great for people on foot!
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto One of my favourite features of old cities is where two streets connect at a narrow angle, mainly because I love wedge shaped buildings like the flatiron. Too bad cars made this "bad practice"
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto Why dont you do a roundabout near the tip of public green park?
@@Iivaitte because I don’t want to 😁 and honestly because I don’t need to. I’m not building this city for cars, therefore traffic shouldn’t be a big issue down the line. Also, a roundabout would seriously take up a ton of space because you can’t really build them as small as real life in CS. It would also increase walking distance and make it harder to run public transportation through here.
The speed and finesse are just unreal. It's all just so smooth and quick that the whole video just blew right by like nothing.
Amazing job and looking forward to more of this
Thanks so much for your feedback! This is exactly how I hoped things would work 😊 I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for always making such fun and helpful tutorials! I’ve been really nervous about diagonal roads causing intersections with more than four connections. This intersection with seven, has truly shown me that it is totally possible!
Oh yeah! We don’t need no roundabouts!
And thanks 😊 I’m so glad you like them!
Really great guide! One of the few creators that let you build along. Rebuilding your city myself and I am learning a lot from it. Only remark is that you sometimes go so fast, it is hard to see where you build exactly. Keep up this awesome content!
Holy what a great video! Would love to see this continue into a long running series! I love the quick tutorial education style vs long drawn out explanations others may do. Well done!
It goes so quick though, I was hoping it would be a short running series 😂 I do have some longer stuff, but I swear I try not to draw it out!
I’m really glad this video worked for you! I definitely have more episodes in the works.
Lee, good to see you making videos again after your time away. You kept this one moving along quickly. I really like the explainations of what you are doing and why.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed and shared specifics on what you liked!
Great Episode, so many content creators start with a complicated road junction and network and when I follow suit I tend to run out of money. Really looking forward to the next episode of this series to see how you expand to the next level.
Great to see you back posting dude! Your videos are unique and you bring so much technical knowledge. Always a pleasure
I am just so happy you enjoyed it!
Every time I watch one of your videos, I learn something new. Thank you!
Yaaayyyyy! That’s all I ever hope for 😁
So glad to see a new post, Lee. You always bring new ideas and ways of looking at C:S in your vids. Looking forward to seeing you go high-density in the next one!
Always making it so easy to understand, always leave us wanting more! Another great installment Lee!
The beauty of a small town with a great future ahead, especially when you know what are you doing.
Not like me that menaged to turn a grid layout chaotic and had the whole city collapse on itself because I forget that connectivity is a thing 😅
Alternate direct routes diffuse traffic! 😉
One of the best Cities youtuber I have seen in a long time. Very well done. Clear and packed full of info.
Glad you enjoyed it! I hope you’ll check out my more detailed tutorial series, _More Money Less Traffic._ 😁
So keen for this series. Got the little notification bell letting me know you finally uploaded another video. Love the content, keep up the good work 😁👍
The follow-up episodes are finally coming :D Great stuff, really enjoyed this!
Came here from CityPlannerPlays, love your content. Very informative tutorial, you fit a lot in there without it feeling rushed. Great vid!
Thanks for coming! I’m glad you enjoyed it! Hope you’ll be back for more!
Glad to see you again! You're one of my absolutely favorite city builders!
Wow! Thanks so much!
great video - I am excited to see the next two in the series because that's where my cities always seem to fall apart no matter what I do.
Great work Lee - extremely watchable! Really enjoyed the pace and presentation.
Awesome! I have been sitting on this and refining it for a really long time…I was always a teensy bit afraid it went too fast…thanks so much for your feedback!
Great to see you back Lee!
The style of these video's is just spot on. The perfect balance of narration.
I’m so glad to hear this! Thanks!
Very well done, and very polished, Lee. Hope the next one doesn't take as long as this one to see the light of day :D
this is a great video that truly makes the beginning city planning seem simple! i used to play sim city on my phone all the time and recently decided to get cities skylines on console and have been struggling to keep my budget in check. you simplified the different features so well and now i feel prepared to make a successful city ☺️
Glad to hear it! If you want some more depth on the simulation, definitely give More Money Less Traffic a try!
I really love the way you built on this map
Leave it to Lee Hawkins to take even a Tip/Tutorial build to the next level. Love your content and can't wait for more!
Thank you so much for your kind words 😊
Always fantastic content. Loves the fluidity of the build.
Please continue this serie I’m loving it!
This man is playing city skylines like "How It's Made," and I'm 💯 here for it
I’ve gone through maybe 4 videos and didn’t understand but this one helped me understand where I need to start thank you!! I just got the game yesterday
That’s what I love to hear!
I rewatched this after a few years and it just clicked to me that what you’re doing is basically like the “natural growth” movement that was started by some dude a decade ago sin simcity 4 since i’m currently playing it and trying the method myself. His mindset was the same “build stuff only when they are needed, badly sometimes.”
I love this video! I love playing with Vanilla assets, and this is great, I'll be taking loads of these tips for my next city! Love it!
You are a master of this game, Lee, and produce great content. It's always a joy to watch your videos.
So glad you enjoy my vids! I’m happy to help you get more from the game!
Well done! I have been playing CS 1 for 2 months already and I absolutely love these videos.
I’m completely new to the game - this was really helpful! Thanks!
He’s back! Great video…always look forward to your CS guides.
I built this town on the same map. I hadn't played CS for a couple of years, this was a great way to reskill. And learn new things! Thanks.
Happy to help you get back into the game! Drop by our Discord if you need any help, or if you want to show off what you’ve built 👍🏻
Hope you post often. Loved the video
Great to have another series from you Lee. Cheers.
Man, you make this look so easy! Great video!
Good planning Lee, glad to watch it.
That was so well put together you made me like and comment. Well done!
YES! I’ve accomplished my mission! Thank you!
Hey, LEE is back!
Love your videos! Keep them coming!
Thanks! Working on it 🥴
Always get excited when I see you put up a new video lol. Looking forward to the next one.
Awww shucks 😊 I’m happy you enjoy them! Thank you!
Been a while. Good to see a new video :)
Great video, great pace, great info, great recommendations, and no fluff....love it and thank you!
I aim to please! Glad this was great for you!
Top notch stuff as always from Professor Lee. Loved the pacing and explanations.
Thank you! I’m so glad the pacing worked out…I wanted it to be not too fast, but also not too slow.
this is like the perfect start kit foundation. Thanks LEEE!
I’m so glad you liked it! I’m excited to get apart 2 out there!
CPP invoked me here, no regrets, your content is great, keep doing more! 😊👏
this is the first video of cities skylines guide and im not even bored to listen
Lee is such a master in the game. Always enjoy his videos!
Thank you! I’m so happy you enjoy them!
Great video as usual, can't wait for the next episode already
Jesus christ, how good are you!? Like im even trying to recreate it and 1 grid fuckup = complete reconstruction needed, and you just....nail it first try. DAAAMN you are good!
This was spectacular - Very well put together, Lee.
Oh thank you! I really poured my heart and soul into this one, I’m so relieved you like it so much!
This episode was MOVING! Nice work Lee! 👍
I’m glad it MOVED you to comment! Thanks so much!
Love seeing the Philly-inspired city! Can't wait to see what's next.
Great video as always. Needed a refresh this helped.
Love that you used Philadelphia streets! It's fun hearing the names of streets I grew up walking down!
I took a TON of ideas from Philly’s street layout…so I figured I might as well use the names so people would recognize it 😊
Very nice and clean video, will for sure follow this series!
This was so satisfying to watch and listen to. 😌
You're REALLY good at making these practical C:S videos!
Awww shucks! I’m so glad you liked it!
Well done! I’m looking forward for the next episode.
This was indeed the video i needed. Thank you so much !
Geat work Lee. Love the video, pace and length were spot on.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Great content as always, and also a great way to make us remember why we all love it so much!! 😁
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ooo a Lee video! Great stuff, as always!
Really good build so far! Great work! 👍😊
Amazing, I need the second episode!
Amazing, just got into this game so this vid was a game changer for me. Thank you!
So happy I could change the game and make it better for you!
Neat! Welcome back, Leeeeeeee!
Thank youuuuu! Glad you enjoyed it!
This was the first video I watched from this channel, and the one that made me subscribe... about 24 hours ago. As I commented on another video, I've recently gotten back into this game after a few years away, in part due to the CS2 announcement... and this video is an excellent refresher, so much so that I've now watched it twice... and I'll probably watch it a third time before I start my city over from scratch. The city I'm currently building is using the same map, but I'm having traffic flow and cash flow issues, and this video points out several easy fixes that I'd missed in my current build. I really do like this map; it's probably my first choice out of all of the original and DLC maps, and I have all of the core gameplay DLC packs (picked them all up on Steam's recent sale).
Awesome! I’m really happy that this video helped you out so much! Now I gotta get down and make that second part… 😁
Great video, a quick and no nonsense city starter that was fun to watch. I love how you get to the point so quickly
Thank you so much, Susan! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto Now get to work making more 🙂
ALWAYS the best Mr. Lee Hawkins - thank you!
This is really helpful, especially for players who just got the game recently.
I am glad to have subscribed here, great video as always!
I only blame UA-cam for not showing this to me sooner!
Dummole algorithm thinks it’s smarter than it is! I’m so glad you didn’t miss this one!
I was iffy about getting into this game and this video just convinced me to do so. That is a great video. Thanks for the information.
Awesome! Always happy to bring in a new city builder! 😃
Really like this guide. I hope this continues.
I’m so glad you liked it! It will! Be sure to check out More Money Less Traffic if you haven’t seen it! I have more of those coming soon…
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto I hope you see this additional comment. I've checked out the More Money Less Traffic series but I think this video was one of the very best for Cities Skylines that's been made by any channel.
I have 350+ hours in Cities Skylines and so I know how the game works. But this was a very condensed 20 minutes that was follow-able and clearly articulated exactly what needed to be considered at each stage of the city development. There were no mods, no gimmicks and it wasn't 45 minutes or an hour - just a very sweet 20 minutes and *presto* a viable city. I hope you continue because I'd like to see what you're going to do about that traffic junction to the highway and that street it dumps on, where/how you place more education and configuring mass transit and pedestrian paths to prep for city growth. But again, the amount of information conveyed and the length was perfect.
@@waltblackadar4690 that is exactly what I was aiming for! Thank you! I will probably start work on the next part in a month or so at the earliest. I would like to get a long-form guide done so I can draw off of that for the condensed version.
Yooooo new Lee Hawkins video! This is really great!
I was so excited to see a new Lee Hawkins video that I watched it on my phone with only 13% battery left without a wi-fi connection. This was a great video that makes it so easy for newbies, and even experienced players, get a great jump start to a new city. You Rock Lee! Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Kris, I’m honored! I’m super glad you enjoyed it! It was definitely a labor of love…I poured my heart and soul into this particular video and I’m glad it’s getting such a great response 😊
played this game a year ago. this is one of the best games ever for raising a town
Indeed it is!
now we need quick megalopolis video! great content! sub-worthy!
Welcome back and happy thanksgiving!
Very nice work, Lee. By building the town with you, I learned so much from key traffic management ideas to timely planned expansions. Probably not the first one asking, but when can we expect the next episode of Quick Metropolis?
Looking forward for the next video!
cant wait for the next episode. really love your voice
This is great, really enjoyed the layout and strategy!! My favorite beginner’s video 🙏
😊 glad you enjoyed it!
THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I ALWAYS DREAMED TO CREATE! THANKS SO MUCH!!!
Happy to help! 😁
This is amazing! These tips are so useful as a beginner tysm
Awesome to hear! I’m so glad this helped you!
This is my favourite tutorial! A part two would be great
