  • A customer brought in this transmission after it fell off a transmission stand.
    I cleaned it up and welded it all back together.
    It's back in the school bus today.

    At first I thought no way, but he fixed that sucker. I'm impressed. I don't have a TIG welder, but this makes me want one. I am a some time, maybe ok, amateur mig and stick welder on car and hobby stuff. When someone ask me about welding I say it's about touch, you got to feel what you are doing. Love the little girl, a real cutie. Good job.

    Nice! the only thing I would suggest that I have found useful when welding cast aluminum is to preheat the area just before laying your bead, with less tendency to have your weld crack during cooldown. I have welded cast without preheating but I feel the penetration of the welds come out better.

    So. This is the first time, I'm not agreed in your work.
    I've weldet a few transmission bells. Is it called bell in english?
    I think, the V isn't deep enough. This doesn't hold a lot. I've grind the V min. 10mm wide, so it is down to the core. This works well.
    The second point is the crack, wich isn't completely broken. I think I would drill a hole at the end. If not, this will eventually break again!?
    Good luck!

    • @ZILAwelds
      @ZILAwelds  6 років тому +5

      Kraut Performance, i agree the V could have been deeper. However, this aluminum casting was only about 4mm thick !!! I dont know if that showed on camera - but the the flange where the bell housing sits against the engine was only about 8mm ....
      I think the german word is Aluminium spritz guss .... super thin stuff with a lot of "unknows junk" in the casting seems like ... a lot of black stuff was floating at me .... dilling the hole at the end of the crack sounds good in theory - i have found that sometimes it is really hard to actually find the end of the crack - or the crack goes further on the bottom side than on the top side ... i have done a lot of cast iron and aluminum transmissions and about 75% of the time i didnt drill a hole - and they all held up so far .... I am not against drilling a hole, but t think it is going to work out ok.
      so when i grooved the backside out i went just about 3mm deep ... it was almost all the way to where the top weld penetrated ....
      Thank you for your input and thank you for watching
      and of course you dont have to agree with all my repairs :-)

    • @ZILAwelds
      @ZILAwelds  6 років тому +1

      and really although the chunk that broke out was pretty large ... only one out of the 12 bolt holes is in the newly welded area...

    • @kraut-performance
      @kraut-performance 6 років тому +3

      Oh. I thought it was thicker than 4mm. Than it will heat enough to the core for sure.
      Alluminiuspritzguss is right! I hear you say it in my brain. :-D
      The German castings, like vw or Mercedes, aren't better. There are a lot of black points after welding. I think, standart transmissions are all of the cheapest castings they could build.
      If it work without drilling a hole, make it! I think you have done a lot more welding action then me. :-)
      I like the 'ugly' backyard youtube channels like yours and mine.
      We make money with work, the glossy channels make money with shiny clips. But our way is real! :-)

    I’m not a welder but I love watching how you guys go about repairing things. I’ve learned so much just by watching different channels and I appreciate the effort it takes to make these videos. With all the welds on this housing there must come a point where replacing the housing would make more sense. Are the repaired areas stronger than the original casting?
    Richard

    • @ZILAwelds
      @ZILAwelds  6 років тому +2

      it broke yesterday - the guy needed it back in the school bus today .... so i guess - this was a very fast way to get him going ... is it the best, or the cheapest way ? i dont know - but i know it worked for him .... the repaired areas are NOT stronger than the casting. why ? you always here the weld is stronger than what you weld on....
      that only counts for steel ... aluminum is typically heat treated and artificially aged that puts it into a certain "condition" (that is the technical term for it) and so the repair here is only about 50% as strong as the original EVEN if the repair is done properly ...
      but i am pretty confident it is going to work for the guy seeing only 1 out of the 12 bolts is in the repaired area anyways ....
      thanks for watching

    • @JeepITguy
      @JeepITguy 6 років тому

      The problem there is the expense to have the entire transmission rebuilt again. It's just as much work to remove all the parts and install in a new case.. If you have a good welder available, and need the truck back in service, weld it!

  • @pontoonrob7948

    Hey, thanks for taking the time. The filler you are using interests me. I googled rockmount. Was that tig specific rod? It looked flimsy more so than a typical 4043 or 5356? Was it their magnesium rod? I do a few marine outdrives and the Volvo ones seem to have more magnesium. Winder if that would be suitable?

    • @ZILAwelds
      @ZILAwelds  6 років тому

      Robert Cook its an aluminum rod and from the green color of the flame it looks to me that it has 5-7% magnesium ( of course they are not disclosing ... that is company secret for their NEPTUNE rods) Also judging by the hardness of the rod i would say 1-2% manganese and some silicon as a flow promotor and some anti oxidants ...
      this is NOT a magnesium rod. I would say definitely a 5000 series wire ... like a 5356 with some 5554 elements ( the manganese) in it ....
      This can be a good rod for what you want to use it for

    It really sucks when you finish welding to find a huge pool of oil all over the bench & ground when you stop welding. It's one of the drawbacks of welding fully assembled automotive jobs.

  • @chrisplayz253
    @chrisplayz253 5 років тому

    Hi you made that repair look quite straightforward but I was wondering...
    1. Why did u decide to use a 75-25 mix as opposed to pure argon and..
    2.Why did u use that magnesium rich wire?
    Thanks for your time!

    • @ZILAwelds
      @ZILAwelds  5 років тому +1

      helium mixtures help with contaminants in the welds - and castings have plenty of them...
      this wire has deoxidizers and cleaning agents. besides the magnesium providing some strength (seeing it is not being heat treated after I am done) it also helps to keep the weld pool clean and "flush" contaminants to the top.
      I am NOT implying that you couldn't have done this with 100% argon and 4043 or 5356 - BUT I think that my choice of tools and process has some sort of advantage over the "regular" 100% agon...

      @@ZILAwelds Thank you for your reply I have learnt something new today now because of you :)

    • @ZILAwelds
      @ZILAwelds  5 років тому +2

      @@chrisplayz253 thanks ! :-). and let me try to top this: when you get helium mixtures you make a "deal with the devil" what I mean nothing is just only good or just only bad .... you buy advantages AND disadvantages ... all at the same time. Helium is much hotter (which can be good or bad) it is much more $$$, it helps you deal with impurities better but you also buy poor arc stability and a hard to ignite arc.
      On tig you can start an arc with 100% argon very easy, with 100% helium it is hard - you better have a perfectly clean and sharpened tungsten and the right distance to the material.... and with mixtures, you get part of this problem.
      Arc stability is also a concern with tig, mig and pulse tig or pulse mig when you run helium mixtures or straight helium ....
      as long as you keep all this in mind. - you are ok

I drove it for a bit, put cold weld on it and over 40000km later still not leaking. Should I have it welded or just leave it?
