This movie was sadly doomed to fail. There are videos on UA-cam that go into detail as to the how and why of it but it was Disney Vs. the directors. I loved it personally and it was a big part of my childhood
One of my favorites it’s actually above Atlantis on my Disney List the writing is top notch incredible character development plus I love pirate asthetic and adventure stories in general
It didn't fail in it direction it failed because Disney wanted it too with it bombing Disney had the reason they needed to completely stop traditional animation the only traditional animators left are in charge of image projection at the parks.
For everyone about to say why there is air in space, the book narrator nails the explanation in the first 10 seconds. The layer of outer space they sail in exists within an “etherium”, a sort of stable interplanetary (possibly intergalactic) atmosphere, and somewhere beyond that is the airless void we see space as. From what I can understand, it’s a setting based on an old European concept of space (correct me if I’m wrong).
Never knew this :) I always just assume their space ships were capable of holding a breathable atmosphere around the ship just the way it is able to turn on and off the gravity feature.
I find it absolutely fascinating that you don't like Morph but do like B.E.N. Usually people's opinions are quite the other way around. (I like 'em both.) You also mentioned that you liked Dr. Doppler's design... his animator, Sergio Pablos, went on to direct the movie Klaus (released by Netflix) and you can very much see his style in the character designs there as well.
I think I may have liked B.E.N. just because I generally like Martin Short. I could definitely see how some people could find the character obnoxious. Thanks for that info on Sergio Pablos. I’ll check out Klaus!
i honestly like He's character. B.E.N. is just the last man of the crew who lost his mind and was left to rust. i mean, he is based on a equally insane character from the book if i remember correctly.
This is one of my favorite movies. I can't recommend more that you watch the video "Treasure Planet Disney's Biggest Mistake" It explains so much about the movie and why it flopped so hard, and it really made me appreciate the movie all the more, and lament how Disney treated it.
Rather than "space", they call it "the Aetherium". To my linguistically inclined mind, it always sounded like some sort of a mix between the words aether and aquarium. This is the most under-rated Disney piece, in my opinion...
This is my favorite Disney movie of all time. Jim Hawkins is one of the most relatable characters ever, and Silver is like the Dad he lost. Still brings tears to my eyes.
I think it's great that Disney decided to do a boy movie. My sister recently noticed this but in animation there's not much of a space for exploring boy's issues. There are certainly movies directed at boys but rarely ones that comment on their struggles or experiences they may have whereas we have a plethora of those for girls. I think it's important really and I'm glad this exists for that even though Disney tried to bury it. Not to say boys can't like animated films typically directed at girls or vice versa but it's a different experience to simply watch and enjoy a movie and have a movie speak to you and your experiences.
I recommend looking up BREADSWORD’s video on treasure planet. It wasn’t so much of a corporate decision to make the movie, rather that it was a passion project for some of the writers at Disney during the 90s
That's an interesting observation. It makes me notice that unlike other Disney films featuring male leads (Aladdin, Hercules, Tarzan, Atlantis, etc.) there is no female lead starring opposite of Jim as a love interest. The focus is entirely on his relationship with Silver. I think it might be the only Disney film to do that.
The band is Goo Goo Dolls and the song was actually played on radio, at least in my country. I know a couple of people who has heard the song but never saw the movie😅 Anyway I love the band, the song and love the movie 😁
The big two things this movie had going against it when it released was that it was a) designed as a Summer movie but got delayed to the holiday season, and b) released while the Santa Clause sequel and a Harry Potter movie were both still in theatres. Disney wanted to bury it because it was costing them a lot of time and money.
Silver animation is a blend of cgi (arm, leg, eye) and 2d (his entire body). They actually used old Captain Hook animation to test the robot arm. Edit: here’s the link ua-cam.com/video/bt19xngNDAQ/v-deo.html
...is it sad that I don't have to click the link to know that bonus feature I watched a thousand times? It's honestly engrained in my head because I would constantly watch Treasure Planet and it's bonus features constantly while I was growing up.
Oh my GOOOOOOOD one minute in and you already blew my mind by pointing out that the narrator is the same voice actor who did Frollo!!! I've watched this one SO many times, and I've watched Hunchback a few times, but I never made the connection!
@@DeepDiveDisney Together with Atlantis: The Lost Empire its one of the hidden gems from Disney's second dark age. Both rank high among my favourite movies not least because their amazing soundtrack. Treasure Planet's failure at the box office is especially tragic considering it was Ron Clements' und John Musker's passion project. But hey, it was an Oscar nominee in 2003 at least.
The song is I'm Still Here by John Rzeznik, singer for the band Goo Goo Dolls. The main reason for this movie failing is because Disney didn't want to do 2D animation anymore. They made sure this wasn't marketed well nor released at a good date. No matter what they've done to this movie, it will still be one of my top favorites. The Black Cauldron is a very obscure one, because of how dark it was.
I think it's funny that you mentioned that this is a boy movie, because as much as I agree I loved this film as a kid and I am very much a girl. Me and my guy friends are always like "Yeah, Treasure Planet and Disney's Dinosaur!" lol
I love both of those 2002 “angst” songs 💔 kind of sad you didn’t like or know the them. That being said, loved watching your reaction and film commentary! I also think this film is terribly underrated. If I was to pick another film I feel doesn’t get enough credit for story or animation I would have to go with Atlantis. Both are fantastic and not talked about enough.
Giving me such a crisis of self you gave me lol. “Let’s make a boy movie” when as a little girl I adored this movie. Captain Amelia was my favorite, I freaking wanted to be Captain Amelia when I grew up so bad.
This movie is and have been in my heart for as long as i can remember. 19 years since it came out and im still listening to the soundtrack. Good video ❤
Yes It's a tragic thing this is among few movies that's been overlooked It's whole life! It's good some people recently can figure out how to watch and maybe appreciate it at least once. There's only a handful of videos on it. it's cool seeing a reaction! Very nice Mr. ^^
My late Grandfather bout its film and me and my cousins watch it together, it is the only Disney film that Grandfather has ever bout for us, me, my siblings and my cousins will treasure this movie, when any of our parents were gone some were then he will come to us and be with us, he was my Mentor and my problem solver, I miss him much even now.
GREAT reaction and I agree with all you said and gotta say animators must have felt devasted after the movie got no recognition... Still I am glad this exists. One of pf my fave movies ever It has it's own unique charm. I also would love for you to watch Brother bear 🐻 also one of my fave also Spirit of the stallion 🐎
I saw Brother Bear in the theaters but haven't seen it since. I remember very little about it so I'll give it another go at some point! Thanks for watching!
I have to saw, I never liked Ben-as a kid or now-but I can at least respect his character and that he went crazy after being alone for so long. Always makes me a bit upset when people just flat out hate him without thinking of why he became like that. Makes me glad you apreciate the source material like this
Another Disney film I adored was 1986's "The Great Mouse Detective". Like Treasure Planet (which I also love and don't understand why it wasn't more popular) it used computer animation for certain action scenes. Many critics felt this film helped steer Disney back on course after the previous disappointment of the Black Cauldron. The voice acting was also amazing and Vincent Price all but stole the show in every scene he was in. The Great Mouse Detective is another Great Disney film without a fairytale princess that I highly recomend.
I actually saw The Great Mouse Detective in the theater! I revisited it a few years ago and remember enjoying it then as well. I should check it out again! Thanks for watching!
The channel Breadsword made a video about this movie, he makes a pretty good argument that Disney exec's basically handicapped the release to kill this movie in the crib
The only thing I dislike in this film is I feel Captain Amelia could have run with her snarky side a little longer. Her relationship with Dr Doppler is adorable but a little fast.
This is my fave disney film and was a fundamental part of my chilhood identity. And the song is one of my faves and was actually made for the film! I plan to get a quote from this film as a tattoo someday: "You're gonna rattle the stars."
Have you seen The Prince Of Egypt by DreamWorks? It’s definitely a must watch if you haven’t seen it yet and it’s also a criminally underrated movie. If you only want to review Disney movies though then I’d recommend Walt Disney’s Atlantis instead.
I've never seen Prince of Egypt but do want to stick pretty strictly with Disney content for this channel - I DID recently watch Atlantis for the first time for a future episode though!
The lines on Jim's face were there for a character development purpose more than as part of the design :) same with his clothing, as the movie progresses you will notice his clothing gets lighter and the marks eventually fade by the end ^_^
Underrated movie, to bad it wasn't received that well from the public at the time, imagine how Disney could of been like if this movie was heavily well loved, Disney's whole art style and story telling would of changed because of this movie.
This movie does have a sequel in the form of a video game. Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon which I highly recommend. You can pick it up on Steam for about ten bucks.
My favorite scene is when the Doctor finds his wrists are so thin they are actually unfit to be tied. "Hay you!" (Burp!) "Yes, you! I have a question, is your body too massive for your teeny tiny head, or is your head too teeny tiny for your Big Fat Body?!" (Grrrr!!) "I have one more question, (energy pistol power up sound) is this yours?"
This is the golden age of 2d animation, imo. Disney makes Treasure Planet, Atlantis the Lost Empire. In the meantime Dream Works makes Prince of Egypt and Sinbad. I agree completely - this is such an underrated and underdiscussed movie! One of my favorite films I grew up with!
This movie easily has enough material for a sequel. We just need to explore the lore around Treasure Planet itself. How did Flint aquire it? Did he make it himself? Steal it? Was it already ancient by the time he found it? Could there be more like the Planet, out there in the aetherium?
Great video. I’ve never seen this either. It came out when I was almost 15, right in that “too old for Disney animation” phase. Now I definitely want to give it a watch. Any chance you can re-upload the Home on the Range one? I assume it got hit for copyright, so could you maybe put it up somewhere else, or re-edit it so it’s safe(r)?
The Black Cauldron, also based on a book is probably the most obscure disney film that stands out really memorably in my head. That could be because there were scenes that utterly terrified me as a kid though lol. Also, I love Treasure Planet, but Titan A.E. tops it on my list for an animated, boy-oriented space adventure film. They did similar things with the animation in terms of combining CG and 2d, however Titan A.E. I think was more successful at it and imo showcases a lost opportunity in how animation could have developed if full-3d hadn't overtaken everything else.
The dark shading on Jim's eyes is a way to showcase his emotions it's dark because he's feeling negative emotions and throughout the movie it slowly disapears because he get better
I love how you say it feels like it was meant to be a boy movie when it was my (oldest sister) and my younger sisters favorite movies growing up. It was just such a cool, good story that sucked me in as a kid, and there's really no gender to great storytelling imo. Loved the reaction!!
If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend 'Treasure Planet - Disney's Biggest Mistake' by BREADSWORD. It goes into a massive amount of detail concerning the production, the original idea, how hard it was for the people behind it to even get the go ahead from the high ups as well the plans thy had for the sequel and TV show, (they had Tim Curry lined up for the sequel villain), it's a bit over half an hour long so not that time intensive but it can't be an 'in the background' video you need to pay attention to it. If at all possible, I at least, would love it to be a reaction video on your part, but I understand if you don't want to do that to other UA-camrs who rely on this platform.
Disney wanted this movie to fail. It was a passion project of the directors. Disney doesn’t care to tell stories about the struggle of growing up without a father in the home, which is more relatable than ever. Some fathers leave, but most often there’s the mothers leaving/instigating a divorce. Both are bad, but yeah. The Fatherless Generation is a very real and sad thing to look into.
Still an all time favorite, a film I will always love for me and Jim had more in common then I could even know when I was 4 that I only realized 12 years later, alot in common, I may not have been a delinquent but I had issues with loneliness and not being understood and treated like crap, lack of a father figure when I still had my father in my life was part of that too, the song I'm Still Here got me through high school
I'm sure plenty of people have already commented this, but it is very worth looking into this movie's history. It's incredibly interesting, and even more so depressing. On a similar branch, The EMperor's New Groove has an equally interesting backstory, and might be worth a reaction to the documentary made of it.
at 16:50 when you said no one cares... so many of us care dude. so many of us are angry that disney sent this film out to die as a way to put the style of animation to rest. they marketed it terribly and they released it against a harry potter film and other popular serie films. it was clement and muskers passion project that was reluctantly approved by disney execs almost 20 years after the two directors first pitched the idea in literally the 80’s. still, though it didn’t get the attention it deserved by the public, it did get nominated for the academy award for best animated feature film. also, the scores are really beautiful if you’re into that, esp the electric guitar implemented into the orchestras, certainly matched the 30/70 futuristic to old timey rule they had going throughout the movie, just- so so cool. as for the grungy emo 2002 vibes from the songs and jim’s style, they may seem outdated to some but personally i find it to be charming and relatable in its own way lol. we all have a bit of angsty teenager in us from somewhere back in our youth that we never quite let go of! i’m glad you enjoyed the film and i had fun listening to your commentary. thanks!
yes, the main song is moody as heck, but I always loooooved this kind of music and funny thing is that i always loved the song and i loved goo goo dolls but only few years ago when i was rewatching TP (for like- 100th time) it struck me that- oh my god John Rzeznik is singing the song here!! :D he has such a distinctive voice i can't believe it didn't click sooner :D btw i'm 22 now
The fact that this movie failed is such a Crime in my opinion, it's a really good film and i know there are many who would like to see more of this universe and these characters, the plans for the sequel looked awesome from all the released concept art and character design, heck i even think they had about 20 minutes of dialogue ready to go...such a waste
The sad truth about this movie is that Disney never even wanted it to be made nor released. Which is why there's no part 2 to the movie, because they really don't like making movies that aren't about what they wanted.
Loved this movie as a kid ❤️, still can not believe how it got so badly treated 😭 A Disney-movie I grew up with but hardly anyone else of my friends saw was Mary Poppins. I rewatched it as an adult and still thought it was good (apart from small details) and then seeing “Saving Mister Banks” just took me for a ride I wasn’t prepared for 😲❤️
When did you grow up? I saw the original Mary Poppins as a kid in the theater on it's first run and it did very well... even won an Oscar for the music IIRC.
@@davidbonner4556 I grew up in the late 90s, watching Mary Poppins on VHS, so not during the hipe, but you'd think some more kids would have watched it as well... btw, grew up in Sweden, if that expalins it ;D
Talk about a great reaction man :) Consider me subscribed. I am curious on how you'll react to a favorite of mine, Atlantis the Lost Empire. That being said, I just hope you gain more subscribers eventually
Atlantis: the lost empire (2001) is another Disney movie that was left out to dry... not AS bad as treasure planet. These 2 movies were my everything growing up.
True, mainstream Disney doesn't acknowledge this film. But it actually has a very strong cult following. Most people I know have seen this movie and have extremely fond memories of it. I just wish they had done all three movies they had planned for this world... maybe it would have gained the attention it deserved then and now.
This movie always has been and always will be my favorite movie, it still annoys me that it took about 10 years for disney to allow it to be made and then released it with little to no advertising (the advertising that did exist gave you the entire plot too which is never good) as well as up against Lilo and Stitch. I wish the second movie wasn't scratched it would've been great to see it but I guess I'll deal with VERY rare character appearances at the parks and like 2 pins as official merch instead
This movie will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart, especially Silver’s speech to Jim. I even still have the original dvd of it.
Me too and as Generation Z born 2000, I had it on VHS and later on DVD.

This is probably my favorite Disney movie. I hate that it never got the attention in marketing that it deserved.
I saw The Black Cauldron in the theater! I was 9 and it terrified me.
The dark shading on Jim's eyes is a way to showcase his emotions it's dark because he's feeling negative emotions and throughout the movie it slowly disapears because he get better
I really liked your reactions ! One of my favorites animation movies!
One of my top 10 disney films
Its criminal how underrated this film is!!
My favorite obscure Disney film, is the moonspinners. It’s a fun suspenseful little romp. I highly recommend it.
Yes!! I haven’t seen that one yet but it’s exactly the type of movie I want to watch!! Thanks for the recommendation!
A long forgotten Disney series, Herbie series!!!!!
This movie is a masterpiece from my childhood always a favorite of mine
Jim's dad made one mistake leaving his gorgeous wife 😍
I'm sure plenty of people have already commented this, but it is very worth looking into this movie's history. It's incredibly interesting, and even more so depressing. On a similar branch, The EMperor's New Groove has an equally interesting backstory, and might be worth a reaction to the documentary made of it.
I love this movie. I am glad you appreciated it for the epic movie it was. Bit disappointed you didn't like morph.
at 16:50 when you said no one cares... so many of us care dude. so many of us are angry that disney sent this film out to die as a way to put the style of animation to rest. they marketed it terribly and they released it against a harry potter film and other popular serie films. it was clement and muskers passion project that was reluctantly approved by disney execs almost 20 years after the two directors first pitched the idea in literally the 80’s. still, though it didn’t get the attention it deserved by the public, it did get nominated for the academy award for best animated feature film. also, the scores are really beautiful if you’re into that, esp the electric guitar implemented into the orchestras, certainly matched the 30/70 futuristic to old timey rule they had going throughout the movie, just- so so cool. as for the grungy emo 2002 vibes from the songs and jim’s style, they may seem outdated to some but personally i find it to be charming and relatable in its own way lol. we all have a bit of angsty teenager in us from somewhere back in our youth that we never quite let go of! i’m glad you enjoyed the film and i had fun listening to your commentary. thanks!
I've loved this movie since I was a kid and I'm pretty sad it didn't get the love it deserved
My favorite movie! Maybe meet the robinsons if you haven’t already?
yes, the main song is moody as heck, but I always loooooved this kind of music and funny thing is that i always loved the song and i loved goo goo dolls but only few years ago when i was rewatching TP (for like- 100th time) it struck me that- oh my god John Rzeznik is singing the song here!! :D he has such a distinctive voice i can't believe it didn't click sooner :D btw i'm 22 now
two of my favorite animated disney movies that are lesser known would be Atlantis and the Rescuers
Eha?! You watched the hunchback of motre dame??? Daang was hoping for you to react to it. Whelp did you like it?
You should watch the Muppets Treasure Island.
I’ve never seen it so I should!
Treasure Planet was too good for its time!
.... you should watch Muppets Treasure island. A hit.
Haven’t seen it so I will check it out!
If you're familiar with 'Treasure Island' then you would be familiar with this
I remember reading that book back in school years ago. Sweet memories...
Loved this movie as a kid ❤️, still can not believe how it got so badly treated 😭
A Disney-movie I grew up with but hardly anyone else of my friends saw was Mary Poppins.
Talk about a great reaction man :)
Consider me subscribed. I am curious on how you'll react to a favorite of mine, Atlantis the Lost Empire.
That being said, I just hope you gain more subscribers eventually
Thanks for the sub! I've never seen Atlantis but it is definitely on the list!
@@DeepDiveDisney I genuinely love the movie. It isn't the best in terms of story, but the cast and animation is great.
Love this movie
Only other version I have seen is the muppet version and I think both versions are great.
19:41 LOL Your Face Reaction Was Like WTF Did They Kill Ben Like That
Atlantis: the lost empire (2001) is another Disney movie that was left out to dry... not AS bad as treasure planet. These 2 movies were my everything growing up.
I recently watched Atlantis for an upcoming episode!
Hands was the Goro looking pirate with the 4 arms.
Ah thanks!
True, mainstream Disney doesn't acknowledge this film. But it actually has a very strong cult following. Most people I know have seen this movie and have extremely fond memories of it. I just wish they had done all three movies they had planned for this world... maybe it would have gained the attention it deserved then and now.
It's an animation technique that if a particular character is difficult to make then he must be elimination as soon as possible
This movie always has been and always will be my favorite movie, it still annoys me that it took about 10 years for disney to allow it to be made and then released it with little to no advertising (the advertising that did exist gave you the entire plot too which is never good) as well as up against Lilo and Stitch.
I wish the second movie wasn't scratched it would've been great to see it but I guess I'll deal with VERY rare character appearances at the parks and like 2 pins as official merch instead
my first thought when you said you didn't like mr. arrow's character design was "oh don't worry, you won't have to look at it for long."
I legit thought the same thing and immediately felt guilty
