How to make the Naked & Famous cocktail

- A cocktail as Rock n Roll as its name suggests.
Described by its creator, Joaquin Simo of Death & Co in New York, as ‘the bastard love child of a classic Last Word and Sam Ross’s Paper Plane, conceived in the mountains of Oaxaca’, the Naked & Famous has become a modern classic in its own right thanks to its easy formula combining unusual ingredients to make an intriguing but amazingly fresh cocktail.
Using Aperol in cocktails is a good way to lure people in to the world of amari, and I also often use this cocktail to introduce people to the wonders of mezcal!
SPECS:
20ml (2/3oz) Aperol
20ml (2/3oz) Yellow Chartreuse
20ml (2/3oz) mezcal
20ml (2/3oz) lime juice

Ahhhhh, the love child of two of my favorite drinks AND it's mezcal based? AND I have all the ingredients already? My lord, this is perfect. Can't wait to try it tonight! Thanks for the video
This is one of those cocktails that you would seriously enjoy sipping.
I asked the bartender to make this- the only reason it worked was because it was equal parts - but it was truly wonderful. The guy made a round for the whole dinner staff (i was eating at closing) good job cara!!!!!
Haha that’s great!
Great drink Ms Cara!!! The glass, a little class, great for sipping a cold drink, Great color!!! Your shaking has gotten better, you have your own rhythm and time, Great seeing you, my Queen!!! Watching the different mixologists on you tube, of which, you are my favorite!!! Yes, you are the Queen of mixology!!!, everyone has their own shake technique, the number, the hold, the arch, high, low or in-between, plus, the different types and styles of shakers, the different types of ice, not knocking stirring, you stir beautifully, like I learned from you, a time to shake and a time to stir, depends on the drink and what you want from the drink, thanks again Ms Cara!!! Keep shaking and stirring, see you soon, My Queen!!!
Nostalgic like a last Word.
We watched this video on Mother's Day Sunday morning. By the evening, I'd shaken up several of these. A new favorite in the house!
Love it!
Rushing to the liquor store so I can try this tonight
What a gorgeous colour. This is a spectacular cocktail. Melding such amazing flavours together produces a fabulous drink! I have had one of these beauties and I just loved it so much!! Great video Cara!!
Looks good. Excellent 👌👌👌👌
Love these 4 ingredients style cocktails. So so tasty.
Nice job on the drink, Cara. The Naked & Famous, Last Word, Paper Plane and Last Flight are IMHO absolute must-know modern craft cocktails for all cocktail drinkers. All great variations on a perfect easy to remember formula and all you have to do to customize it is change the base spirit and/or bitter liqueurs to come up with something new.
Amazing cocktail. One of the best I ever had. Thanks for sharing
Never tried this, but with an endorsement like that, I'm definitely on board.
Love these. Will try the suggestion of increasing the Mezcal.
There is something magical about an "equal parts" cocktail like the corpse reviver #2
💯
You do everything so exellent and nice 💖💖💖💖
Advancing my home bartenders skills, the Last Word style of cocktails is a great basis to build on, and this adds to the list.. thx!
Definitely!
Thanks for the video, posted just right on time for "apéritif" in Europe... 😊
I Love your Perfection in videos!
Interesting .. I'd love to order one to try!
Fellow Mezcal fiend, definitely love to hit this with the big smoke flavours!
I’m a big fan of this drink.
Lovely biscuits…you simply can’t go wrong with just about any Last Word riff….and if I may suggest a Sudden Departure (OFTD rum, Ancho Reyes Verde, Maraschino, Lime…all equal parts of course)…would love to see/hear your thoughts on one here 😁
I have yet to try mezcal, and now it looks like I have a reason to!
You won't be disappointed! 😅
Looks good.👍🏼👍🏼
This is hands down my favorite Last Word variation. It makes as little sense on paper as the original does, but has this strange balance that just works (better than the Paper Plane, imho).
Yooooooooooo how can I have not thought about yellow and aperol ! Aperol has been my go to for every cocktail haha
Such a clever combo!
Some serious interplay of flavours here, I love this one. I can't find Yellow Chartreuse anywhere near me so I used an Italian liqueur named Strega, or "witch's brew". It's wonderfully herbal and just a little tangy.
That's sounds interesting. I don't have yellow chartreuse in my locals so I may look into that.
Also bastard love child of Last of the Oaxacans.
Naked & Famous won the draw for May's Cocktail of the Month. On the home menu: all day, every day of May. Cara's "versioning/side note" in this video feels spot on. Releasing the video feels like another vote for N&F. Nice!
Love it!
Maybe I'm childish but I really like cocktail names like this
Totally.
This looks so good! Huge mezcal fan, but they are so hard to source in India. 😭
Or Chartreuse. Even if it's available, it's rarely worth the cost.
Sorry to hear that pal!
@@arpitgupta3232 how much does
Chartreuse cost in India? In Mexico it costs about $50 USD
Just made this with Benedictine in place of Chartreuse since it’s what I had on hand. Still delicious
Interesting sub, definitely will be trying both!
I actually got one of these from my favorite cocktail bar after ordering a dealer's choice at the end of a fun Saturday night recently. Absolutely loved it.
Awesome, I want to go there haha!
Really looking forward to trying this now. So many people in the comments endorsing it
I got half a bottle of Vida left from Cinco de Mayo. Here I come.
💃
Aperol is wonderful, I sub it out for campari in my favorites. I make the Boulevardier with Brown Sugar Bourbon and Aperol, it’s incredible.
Ooh yum! Definitely much more approachable.
Ooh, aperol in a boulavardier sounds intriguing. Mental note to self..
Luv your great cocktail vids- Thank you!! We like smokey whiskey - Islay scotch and Penicillin cocktails are favs here. I've been looking for drink to use a Chartreuse bottle we have and this Naked & Famious mezcal maybe perfect. Question - Should I reduce the Chartreuse used because my Chartreuse is the green version? My understanding is the green has a stronger herbal flavor... Cheers KC
I would definitely cut it back a bit to start out as your understanding is correct!
Interesting cocktail. Gotta be fun downing those cocktails after the camera is off.
Haha we don’t always manage them all!
Why the hell did no one tell me this channel existed!? Just subbed!
Haha 👋
Love the choice of Glassware! It looks amazing. Do you happen to know the brand by any chance? I really need those fancy Martini Glasses!
I believe this was some of the stuff that was sent to us by Rona Glassware, it’s really pretty! Cedar Hospitality are their stockists in Melbourne but I’m sure their website will help you find one closer to you
Thank you Cara, this looks delicious and wow what a color! This is an extra treat because I am very lucky to have a great liquor store here in San Diego that has an entire wall of regional, small-production mezcals. I'll have to find an extra fun bottle or two to try this with!
Fun fact, "quiquiriqui" is the onomatopoeia for a rooster call in Spanish :)
Jealous! And yes that makes sense, it has a rooster on the label 🐔
@@BehindtheBar If you're ever in my town hit me up and I'll treat you to a bottle 😋
I love anything to do with Oaxaca. Sign me up.
Gimme dat Last Word episode :)
Yummy, flavoursome 😋😋😋 and nice colour. Definitely would want to try, unfortunately Chartreuse in unavailable in India.
That’s a shame, you could try substituting a vermouth maybe?
@@BehindtheBar Will try
Hi Cara! Do you think homemade orange liqueur is a good substitute for triple sec? If so, should I use rum or vodka?
Sure! It depends how you want it to taste really, generally vodka is a good neutral base for these kinds of experiments 😊
@@BehindtheBar you run a bar, your channel, and still answer our comments, thanks Cara!
Never heard of any of the spirits mentioned. Interesting though. Take Care.
i learned a new word: Tangerina!
You intro this for people who like Aperol and might be looking to get into Mezcal. Would this work the other way? I have Mezcal, lime juice and Chartreuse, but I'm not even sure what Aperol even is.
For sure! Aperol is on the more approachable end of the amaro category (more info on them here: ua-cam.com/video/FJkMSEvozmc/v-deo.html) and not too expensive so I’d say you have nothing to lose!
@@BehindtheBar Thank you!
@@BehindtheBar Picked up some Aperol the other day and just made and tried this. I like it, even though my Mezcal came close to overpowering it. I think I need one less smoky. (That would be a help-request to the nice folks at the liquor store.)
@@gordol66 you could always try doing a little less mezcal and topping up with tequila if you have some around, to cut the smokiness!
In curious what you guys think of sugar free sodas becoming standard in cocktails? I went out to lunch today and had a lemon lime and bitters and upon taking a sip i discovered the Sprite was sugar free( which i find disgusting). Apparently they only have sugar free Sprite( like mc donalds here) do you think that will every become standard in cocktails?
Huh, it’s not honestly something I’ve seen as being standard- usually always an option but not what you’d give unless someone asks! I am a fan of more premium mixers being used which are generally less sweet than their commercial counterparts, but they should still be full of flavour!
@@BehindtheBar hopefully most places stay that way. I hate the taste of artificial sweeteners so i won't drink things with it in there. Was just curious what people in the industry think of its impact on cocktails and their flavours.
@@nanahc when cocktails have soft drink in them it usually needs the sweetness (a Long Island for instance). Sugar free ones would through it out of balance I’d say!
Being now acutely familiar with the high quality components showcased on your excellent channel, it is disappointing to realize the extent to which even five star establishments use, and get away with using, inferior substitutes. Would you say this is a worldwide phenomenon?
It sort of depends what you’re talking about! Cost pressures can obviously force venues to cut corners but most that I know only do it in ways that they don’t feel affects the quality of the final product.
@@BehindtheBar slowly, or should I say quickly, accumulating essentials based on your channel 😉. Gin Mare with the Spanish GONZALEZ BYASS LA COPA BLANCO Vermouth is my absolute favourite savoury martini, although a Negroni is a close second! My wife doesn’t like the bitterness of the Campari, so going to substitute with some Aperol! Alternatively, I may substitute the vermouth with the sweeter Antica!
And shake it? I think is the first time that the instruction hasn't been "shake as hard as you can."
You can always assume that’s the subtext haha
Does that mean using a smoky scotch would be more like a ‘dressed and infamous’?
Haha!
Damn I don’t have any of those ingredients. Hang on, I do have a lime in the fridge..
All you need is the bottle of mezcal and then you have a party 😉
I'm thirsty 😅
Fancy free....
Curious why you list 20ml as 3/4oz when 1oz is 30ml. Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to say 2/3oz?
You are correct. It's equal parts so it doesn't really matter. I think this error came from adjusting it on the day to suit the glass but forgetting to change the imperial measurements on the original script! Well spotted.
She does in the video. The original recipe was made in ozs, which are weird measures in mL, and vice versa. The volumes are going to be slightly different, but the non-exact conversions make it easier for both oz and mL users.
