The GLASSWARE you (actually) NEED at home

- When it comes to glassware, my advice is always 'drink out of whatever you like drinking out of'. That said, glassware can be a bit of a minefield and it's always good to know what each different glass is designed for and how that affects the drink you put in it.
In this episode we look at the 3 main, must have categories of glassware, Rocks, Highballs & Coupes, but we also look at plenty of other glasses you may want to invest in if they suit your taste and style.

“Although, if you do this because stemware threatens your masculinity, then you really need to reassess how manly you are in the first place” is engraved in my brain. I love you, Cara!
And the way she said it too! I'm not offended, I'm challenged 😂
My wife drags me to second hand stores often, but I stopped dreading it when I got into cocktails. It’s so much fun looking for interesting glassware.
Best part of op shops!
I just was thinking that when I was watching this video.
@@BehindtheBar I've found some beautiful martini and margarita glasses (the latter essential for the blended version, IMO) at my local thrift store (as we call them in the US). Still looking for some nice coupes, but I see no reason to buy them new when you can get some wonderful old glasses for just around $1 and a little luck.
@@the-chillian totally, and half the fun is being like ‘oh these old things? I got them for $3’ about some beautiful vintage glassware haha
@@BehindtheBar Like the vintage Libbey Prado coupe set of 4 we just picked up for $10. Or the 4 Grey Goose pewter martini glasses we found for $14. We have a wee “glass addiction”, true, but we usually swap out whatever we find we aren’t using and gift them to others, along with a drink recipe or two. It’s like regifting, but self started and less guilt inducing. 🍹🍸👍🏻
Yes - Use the glass you have or that makes you happy!
2:55 this should be on a T-shirt! Well said! 👏
Haha!
Video idea: bar jargon. I thought of this when you mentioned “washline”, a term I hadn’t heard before but will work in to my home bar use.
Of course a home drink mixer doesn’t need to know industry terms, but throwing a few in makes me feel cool 😉
Ooh that’s a good one actually!
I kind of know what one is because I've seen the term used many times in cocktail videos but I was going to ask the same thing. A video on terms, and slang of a bar.
I am onboard for the 'Revive the Coupe' movement!
Totally. I always feel I’m going to spill a martini glass
Coupes are the best. Traded my martini glasses for coupes and its so much better
We did. Libbey Prado brown smoked, with raised vine pattern, acquired at a thrift shop for a song. They're pretty fun.
Agreed! They can look nice standing there, but they're a pain to drink from (much less walk with!) since they spill so easily.
I love the overall message of using whatever makes you happy but having this extra info also helps. Thank you!
This was so thoughtful! We get a bit of history and reasoning for certain drinks in certain glasses, but it's not intimidating for new home cocktail enthusiasts.
My tea mug fits them all, multi purpose !!
Totally on board with this!
Most of our glassware is Waterford Crystal, (Lismore) built up over the years after a visit to the factory in the early 90s. We like the reassuring weight of it, and the craftsmanship of course. It’s well used too, every weekend, we don’t keep it for ‘best’!
That’s the way to do it!
Stemmed glasses do look fancy but I’m always more anxious about them being fragile. Maybe I just like rocks glasses though because that’s what I prefer my Gin and Tonics out of too. Like you said, they just have a nice weight and feel good in your hand, so every drink from one is good!
This was so informative! Love the coupe revival, and happy to find a kindred glassware loving spirit! Cheers 🥃
Being an old man I've managed to accumulate quite a glass collection, mostly from presents and my travels. Pilsner, mug, and schooner glasses for beer some purchased in Prague (I love the pint schooner for Guinness and pilsner pints for Bavarian lagers); two different sizes of margaritas glasses (both styles from Ensenada),martini, old fashion, highball glasses, small and large wine glasses, champagne from flutes (including a set of b!ack Vienna crystal), brandy and cordial glasses, shot and jigger glasses, and een have a set of sake gkasses. I have three cabinets full of glassware and crystal. Why I ask myself do I have so many varieties? I didn't buy them all but having them is kind of nice. I agree that glassware lends to the ambiance one seeks when mixing a drink! Moreover, having too many glasses is better than having too few! And sadly, glasses break and finding comparable replacements is damnably difficult!
This!
I’ll quote a line for the whiskey drinkers, if you know it, you know it: the best whisk(e)y is the one you like the way you like to drink it! Cheers! 🥃
Thank you so much for doing this video
We probably have all of those glasses in our two cupboards; most used are Glen Cairn (for sipping Bourbon), and rocks glasses, even for wine, although we have myriad stemmed glasses and flutes. What we lack is the variety of your spirits, generally just Bourbon, Vodka, and wine. Oh, and beer - who can forget beer🍺🍸🍹🥂🍷🥃 Cheers for another informative video!
To be honest at home I’m mostly gin, Scotch and wine so not too dissimilar haha! And also like drinking my wine in bed out of a stemless...I mean honestly it’s more of a bowl than a glass 😉 haha
@@BehindtheBar yes, you also spill less 🤓
Beautiful video Cara. Ahhh the Nick & Nora - truly the most versatile cocktail glass in my bar. How can you not love a glass named after two of the most legendary drinkers of the Silver Screen? The glass also allows me to have one more martini than I used to have with those unnecessarily large straigh0edged martini glasses. Shhhhh ....
"I would like my Appletini in a rocks glass because I'm too masculine to drink out of a stemmed glass."
😂
My fav glass is the Nick and Nora. I love how much space it leaves for any garnishes and if you want to drink fast and get out of there you can. Another advantage is it’s totally comfortable to cheers with it
Great video as usual. Looking forward to checking out your course!
I just really like that the one coupe glass is called a Nick & Nora. The Thin Man would approve.
I was looking into them as they are the one type I don't have a everyday substitution for. Found this on one of the sets: "Nick and Nora glasses can be thought of as the child of a coupe glass and martini glass. And it can do the job of both. "Nick and Nora" references the husband and wife detective duo in the 1930's movie, "Thin Man." Prohibition ended and a true celebration of cocktails ensued."
This was very helpful. I enjoyed it :) looking forward for the next video
I am obsessed with glassware in general! And yours are amazing! I just got a gift and received so many new glasses! Can't wait to play around with them!
Thanks for the great overview. I can imagine collections of fancy and unique glasses getting out of control very quickly. Good to have a clear idea of what basics you can use.
Perfect video! Love your breakdowns mixed with reasonability. Was just about to look for glassware and this will be a great guide!
So glad you found it helpful!
Hello Cara (should you see me) I too love my vintage glasses, will forever keep! Whatever suits your style, I say stay with it! Drinking responsibly or not! 😅🥂
Thank you so much for this video 😁 My wife and I are building our home bar and we needed a realistic pov
Thanks for this very informative and fun video. I love those vintage coupe glasses!
Good episode 😁 very interesting and informative. Right now I have rocks, highballs and Glencairne's. I've started a Whisky hobby and like to drink different ones neat in the Glencairne and also make a cocktail in one of the other glasses to go with it and back and forth between to explore the differences.
It's interesting this glassware thing - I have a couple of beloved whiskey glasses that my dad and I used to drink from before he passed (some great memories!). I also have what we think was an 1800 beer glass that he found while diving back in Wellington NZ. Then there is wine... I have some mid range Check lead crystal wine glasses that are nearly as good as a famous Australian brand of glass but a lot more durable... and good single malt tastes fantastic from them! Subtle crazy stuff but I do like glassware. Lovely work as always!
I drink out of old fashioned glasses because they're easier to clean, and I'm too clumsy to be comfortable around stemware.
Totally fair enough!
Yeah, it's why most of our wine glasses are stemless, and the martini glass stems are metal. Oh and the "margaritas" are so thick they bounce off our vinyl flooring when dropped. I am why I can't have nice things. Well glass ones at the very least.
I'm definitely getting a pineapple glass, super cool. Thanks now I know
Some people have very strong opinions about the "right" way to drink whiskey, but I think there is no wrong way. I prefer a glencairn for all neat pours because I like the aroma and stemware seems too fragile and tippy. But most people like the feel of a rocks glass and I understand that. I use my grandmother's tiny old nick & nora glasses for up cocktails.
The right way to drink whiskey is the way you enjoy it. If you're drinking whiskey, you're doing it right. To each his/her own, and I'll have another.
Thank you, very down to earth
My vintage cocktail bar was, quite by chance the first piece of furniture I ever bought. My first flat was completely unfurnished and on a visit to a S/hand clearance shop looking for a bed, cooker, fridge, etc I saw the bar for £40 . Got it home plugged it in and the lights still worked ! And the first glasses I bought it for it were two of those 'Punt E Mes' ones. Didn't even know what it meant ! And over the years every single glass I have bought for it has come from a charity shop ! And many have gone back there too when replaced by something nicer . I could probably have stocked a chain over the years with the flow of glasses in and out of my place. But I still do wince at the loss of some when the bottom fell out of a box I was carrying in to my current flat !! Roll on the re-opening of the Charity shops I need a good browse of the glass ware again.
As someone with perpetually warm hands, I LOVE a stemmed cocktail glass, I'll put anything in a coupe when I can!
I love these informative videos about bartending in general. You should do those other videos on the other types of glasses. Tips and guides for how to slowly expand home bars and things
2:55 - That's a win right there.
The shot glass / cowboy comment was great!
“What bar? This ‘ere is a saloon!”
Thank you! I'll be referring to this video for substitution ideas every time a cocktail recipe calls for a style of glass I don't have :)
I drink my g&t from a rocks, and manhattans from a wine glass, flips from a martini glass, mojito in a collins, and spritz in a pilsner glass. Great guide. Thanks!
I have small and large coupes, highballs, double rocks, tiki mugs, copper mule mugs, and some flutes. That set does the trick and doesn't take up too much room. I really should look at getting some elegant rocks glasses for old fashioneds, etc. I might take the next few weeks to make myself elegant first
Regarding size, I agree. To the rim! Especially these days. Ah, the simple pleasures of drinking something good from a full glass you like looking at & holding in your hand.
Excellent video!
In my home bar there is only rocks, highball and coupe for coctails/drink and tulip tasting glasses for neat drinking (whisky, Cognac, port etc.)
Great Video Ms Cara!! Very informative and it's just about glasses. Your hurricane glass is still my favorite. Love my pilsners. I recommend, if you are eating with your fingers, use a mug, I have seen too many spills. Like, any type of bar-b-q or chicken, and you can still enjoy your favorite cocktail. Way to go girl, you are still Awesome!!!
Good advice!
Great run-down! The only thing I'd add is a glass - a mug - for hot cocktails like the Hot Toddy, Hot Buttered Rum, and Irish Coffee. These should be clear so that the cocktail can be enjoyed visually, should stand up to heat so they can be warmed before serving the finished cocktail, and have a handle so the drinker's hand doesn't get burned, as well as a sturdy base. Drinks like these are just necessary in the winter months and they deserve a proper glass to be served in.
Good point!
I recently bought some glencairns for whisk(e)y but have found i really enjoy using them for port. As a side note, port(ruby) cocktails as an idea for a future video 😊
You can make any cocktail look and taste good. I love it! I really like your videos.
Thank you, glad to hear it!
not strictly necessary 😳 I love my Nick and Noras. Sours with the foam slowly settling into layers are so beautiful in them. It's like watching the bubbles in a Guinness. Just wouldn't be the same without the show.
Haha I guess that’s my point, you could drink it out of a mug if that’s all you have but those little moments of luxury are what really elevates things 😊
I got a pair of coupes and a pair of martini glasses for Father's Day last year. I very quickly started using the coupes almost exclusively. Those martini glasses spill if you look at them funny.
Martini glasses are the worst... I don't understand why they exist.
Love the subtle jab at masculinity! Drink out of whatever makes you happy!
Good stuff, thanks.
Great episode - I’m a sucker for all the gear and gadgets. I’ve tried to keep from collecting too much glassware, sticking to martini, rocks, and tall mostly. I’ve been eyeing some Nick and Nora glasses though,.
I must get the pineapple glass!
This was fun. Also some truly fancy glasses
Very cool video...Thanks !
A friend always preferred everything from a standard pint glass - beer, wine, or spirit!
Love how the main take away is more or less.... Yeeeeeeeeeeeeah some glasses are functionally made for a particular style of drink... But if it makes you happy, you can do eet!
Totally! I mean everyone has a favourites things which are not always based on practicality- we’re an emotional species 😜
Excellent!
Love it thanks!
Thanks for this very useful video. My two cents: the humble orange juice glass is good for neat whiskies and things like Sazeracs
An amazing glass makes every cocktail in it that much better. I ONLY use glasses that are special to me or I don't waste my time.
And this one goes straight to my cocktail playlist :P You guys got me teally tempted on buying a Goblet or Brandy Ballon😁
I love my small ones, I put up cocktails in them all the time as well as neat spirits 😊
I do whiskey quite a lot, all of them, and the little Brandy balloon works pretty well. I got a set of proper glencairn glasses for a friend, but have yet to get myself a set. I like cream liqueurs in them as well.
Really interesting! I have no problems with stem glasses 🤔
For many of my dark spirit drinks, such as a manhattan, I prefer to use the newer-type cosmopolitan glasses. They have a thick pedestal base that opens to a wide V-shaped coupe. It's not quite as wide open as the typical martini stemware, but I prefer them as they are much more stable and also a bit more multi-purpose. For the "on the rocks" drinks, I do also have the typical "rocks glasses" as she calls them. I've always referred to that shape as a "tumbler". Then, for amarros, we found some "shooters" glasses in a store that work quite well for these very herbal little trysts.
Enjoyed hearing the history of glassware
I live in a developing country where, out of either practicality or sheer economic necessity, the glassware in many households are just repurposed small jars that used to contain food like coffee or peanut butter. I grew up in such a household, but was lucky enough to eventually get a good job as an adult, so I have since diversified my collection 😀 Still, probably because of a practical streak instilled by my childhood, I’ve tended to keep it down to a few favorites. I usually drink whisky or beer, so I have a rocks glass for the former and a pilsner for the latter. I like the pilsner because the low, narrow waist keeps my hand from warming the beer, and it looks elegant without being too fancy. I’ve also got wine glasses in one size, and champagne flutes for special occasions. I’m probably not going to get most of the stuff in this video (like the pineapple glass), but I’m definitely going to add the coupe and a few others to my collection. Thanks!
Buddy thats still common all over the American south.
I am drinking out of a quart jar now. LOL.
Couldn't agree more. I keep a few styles of glasses in stock, just because I know I'll use them. I love my old fashioned glasses, and use them for a lot of drinks. Can't stand the triangular martini glass, and prefer Nick&Nora glasses to coupes. Other than that, I find a good red wine glass works a treat for a lot of things.
Any chance you could make a video on setting up a cheap home-bar?
UA-cam won't let me link to it, but she did an episode like that about 9 months ago. If you go to the Behind the Bar page you should be able to find it. It is called "What Spirits to buy for making cocktails"
We have done one on spirits (although I had an eye on value rather than going properly budget!), and also one on bar equipment which might help you figure out what you actually need. Good idea to pull it all together in to one episode though!

I love going to second hand stores in the hopes of finding a “fun” new glass. Although I am running short on space. 😏
The struggle is real!
I remember the huge martini glasses from the 2000s! I think I still have some, probably sitting in a cupboard at my parent's house. That pineapple glass reminds me of that classic "Key and Peele" sketch about Outkast: "served in a flower vase or vahz."
Great video, I was wondering to get a mixing jar glass, but are not common in my place. I was using a French press's glass instead!
Totally does the job!
Comprehensive ❤️
Just like your vermouth episode.
thank you 🍸🍹🍷🥃🥂
Love the rocks glass masculinity comment! So true XD Excellent video as always, very informative!
Haha! Thanks pal 😊
I like to use glasses that are easily washable and have handles for simple mixes. But I do have a few nice glasses that were a gift when I'm in a more fancy mood.
For some reason I've been procrastinating getting glassware. This was really helpful to wrap my head around the parameters
So glad you found it useful!
I am also obsessed with getting new glassware all the time. When I'm filming I struggle to decide what it would look best in cause honestly they are almost all fun to drink out of.
Haha exactly!
Honestly I do not care very much what kind of glasses I have but I came here to listen to your language. And get some info as well :-)
Hi Ciara,
I got headlong into cocktails a year ago. I then measured and noted the ml volume of my glassware, some of which are very old single glasses. I refer to that glass/volume list, looking at the ingredients + dilution volume to then choose the appropriate glass. I have not put the wrong glass in the freezer or made a mistake this way!
Nick from York
What a good idea! So organised haha
And there is ofcourse the famous hurricane glass for cocktails.
I'm constrained by shelf space, but made sure to have Nick & Nora, Coupe, Rocks, Martini, Highball and to spoil myself I got some tiki goblets
Thank you, Cara, for another great video! I really like the coupe glass at 7:02. Do you by any chance know what brand it is?
Thanks pal! If it’s the one with the gimlet (green with lime slice) then I’m afraid that’s a vintage one!
Wheel & Barrow were selling the Pineapple glasses over Christmas, so I bought a pair. They are good but you need a double serve Piña Colada to fill it up!
...is that a problem? 😜
I have vintage 19th century coupe glasses that were my great-great grandparents. Sure I could keep them in a box and sell one day but I'd rather just enjoy. Only bring them for my closest friends and use to serve champagne during New Years or Manhattans (my favorite cocktail). Makes us feel all fancy!
That’s awesome!
I love having different glassware. The trouble is storing them in my tiny apartment. 😭
It’s hard isn’t it! We have heaps out on display and still overflowing!
I love her voice
it's soothing.
Hi, if you ever do an Q&A show, I’m curious about your tattoos. Especially the red/blue one on your right arm. Thanks!
Glasses can make the drink for me, and I am getting in to finding vintage glasses!! I am looking for a slightly less delicate Nick and Nora glass, because the kind I have ordered, a few times, are extremely thin and break easily.
They are a bit too fragile for this harsh world unfortunately...
@@BehindtheBar Definitely! Ahhh, I wish for a gentler world, in all ways! :-)
I really love snifter and stemless wine glasses. :D
Old dijon mustard jars work for 90% of my cocktails.
So, in your video on "5 Rum Drinks" where you start with The Hurricane....you used a hurricane glass that I swear is a Royal Caribbean Cruise Line souvenir glass....am I right????? I hope so because I love the idea you would do that!!! 🤣🤣🥰🥰
It is! Can’t claim credit though, it belongs to my sister in law 😊
@@BehindtheBar I thought it was hilarious. I call my Wifey and was like "Babe...what does that look like?"
She's like "the set of six up in our cabinet!!!" 🤣🤣🤣
I was just thinking the minimum you should have is a coupe, rocks, and high ball glass. Great minds think alike :D
We're all kinds of glassware mamufacturer .Of premium quality and reasonable price.
Going to have to second the comment at 2:56. Never understood why it was something people fussed about.
I do like using my martini glasses & not just for martinis (manhattans, gimlets, old fashioneds etc).
I have some cheap white wine glasses that I tend to use as well since I don't have any coups.
Finally, as someone who like their whisky neat, I do love my Glencairns, and I have a couple of those Balvenie copita glasses & like those too, but sometimes these narrow mouth glasses are kind of annoying to drink from.
Totally, the narrow openings are great for proper nosing but that’s not always what you’re doing - I have a massive stemless glass which is more like a bowl that I’ll use for drinking wine in bed sometimes- it holds like half a bottle and is impossible to spill 😉 ideal! Haha
Btw do you guysmhave some merch planned? I would definetly get a "Behind the Bar/ Cara Devine" Shaker for example :P
Yes! I’m down for that too 🥃
Stay tuned, we’re working on it! Probably just starting with Ts etc but they look pretty cool 😊
I have a bit of an obsession with vintage bar ware as well. Right now I am working on a collection of Federal Glass items in the Contemporary #4695, better known as the Atomic Amoeba or Atomic Boomerang. To me, drinks always taste better in a vintage glass. :)
💯
It makes me feel like a Cowboy! Love it!
Hi, how do bars handle cleaning their glasses? Hand-washing or are there special dishwashers or racks for handling stemware? Love the channel!
At Bomba we’re lucky enough to have a Winterhalter. It’s the Rolls Royce of dishwashers, it even polishes the glasses for you! But bars will basically always have a dishwasher and you can get special racks for stemware, then they’ll be polished before being put back for use 😊
@@BehindtheBar Thanks much. We've lost so many pieces in our dishwasher even though we've attempted to be careful with placement. Is there a certain weight that bars look for in glassware purchases? (Will start to look for dishwashers with special racks now--I think that Winterhalter is a bit out of my price range as it would hurt my spirit buys)
