Excellent presentation as always. I recently got the 36 set and I figured the same as you, that even a smaller set should allow me to blend any colour I wish. As an art history nerd I love that the replica of Albrecht Dürer's signature is featured on the pencil barrel right after the brand name :) absolutely love when companies pay attention to details like this!

Hi Harry, what happened to showing this pencil on black paper? I have found you showing how the pencils (regular or watercolor) look on black paper surprisingly very important and helpful to me. I think this is unique to your channel and hope you will continue to include it in future reviews. Any chance you can add it back into this review? Thanks and keep up the good work :)

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  7 років тому +2

Hi Dawn, your wish is my command. I have included an image of the pencil in its dry form on black paper on my written review bit.ly/2tsIg6Z. The only reason I didn't include it on the video was because I don't have black watercolor paper and I didn't want to activate the pigment and have that horrible effect you can sometimes get when using watercolor on non watercolor paper, were the paper can start lifting and falling apart.
However, you are the first person to let me know that this is a valuable part of my reviews and so because of this, I have this second purchased Black Watercolor paper from online and will be including this in my videos going forward for all water soluble pencils.
Thank you so much for your feedback Dawn I really appreciate it and I promise, once I get the watercolor paper, it will feature in every video.
Also, as a last minute thing, I have been able to provide a giveaway of a set of 12 Faber Castell Albrecht Durer. You don't have to do anything as to enter the competition all you have to do is comment on this video and be a subscriber. The details are in the description box below. Thank you so much Dawn.

Hi Harry-Dear sir, please do not purchase special paper as I did mean dry on regular black paper. I too am disabled with my back and was trying to get around purchasing too many things. I am a video person and obviously did not look at your printed review-sorry. Thanks for the link and I checked it out.
I do have 3 more questions for you, if you could find the time to answer them, I would appreciate it very much. My thoughts were, maybe to purchase the watercolor versions of the higher end pencils first, and save for the regular versions of the pencils to purchase later. That way I could use the watercolor pencils for both dry and wet media. It seems that the watercolor pencils (from Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer & Caran d'ache Supracolor II's specifically) are very vibrant on black paper-a lot more vibrant than their dry pencil versions- (1)Do you find this to be true? Since you physically have both tests and can look at them with the same lighting - could you please tell me - of the two brands I mentioned- (2)which one, in your opinion- is the most vibrant on the black paper? I would also like your opinion on my thoughts of using the watercolor pencils as a kind of 2-for-1 use, until I could purchase the regular versions- (3)would this work out well? -why or why not.
Sorry for the book, but I wanted to be as clear as possible, as to what I was thinking about. Maybe others are curious about this too. Thanks for your response and in advance for your response for this. Keep up the good work.
I always say, any day that I am vertical is a good day! 😎

Hi Dawn. Do you have an email address that I could sen you my reply to. Rather than telling you my opinion on the question you asked, I have used the same colours with Faber Castells Albrecht Durer, Polychromos and Caran d'Aches Supracolor Soft all in dray format, side by side on Black paper. You will be able to see for yourself which looks best on black paper. I have also helped with the other part of the question as well. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

Hi ! Thank you so much for this review. This is my first time visiting your channel, it definitely won't be my last, very informative, wonderful. These Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils look like a lot of Fun to use ! I used to draw all the time (graphite) it was a part of me from birth. When my father died I was a young adult, I lost my desire to draw. Then my mother and brother passed away, and so did my passion to draw and create. Many many years have gone by now, and finally the urge, desire and passion is returning !!! It truly is an AMAZING feeling !!! I'm so glad it has returned. I thought I had lost it forever. So now I Must Create. So I would like to get into and learn colored pencil and watercolor pencil and combine the two mediums. Thank you so much. Best Wishes to you ~

I got a crazy bonus at work and I bought the 120 wooden box set and accidentally bought the tin also. I was surprised when they both showed up, I thought they made a mistake. But when I looked at my credit card bill they didn’t: I was charged for both! So I guess I’ll replace from the tin as I use them from the wooden box! Whoops! I like the wooden box because I just have to open it up to see all my colors instead of lifting out all the trays!

    Hi Harry! 😃
I have a question: how would you describe/compare Albrecht Dürer, Supracolor Soft, and Museum Aquerelle?
I’m looking to get some of each set to test them out. I already purchased the Marine set of Aquerelle (mainly because my favorite color is ‘blue’ - meaning practically all shades). I haven’t used them yet because I’m torn.
These are quite an investment, and unlike the dry pencils, I’m not inclined to purchase a large assortment of watercolor pencils.
The Aquerelle seem to be the best, based on reviews I’ve read and seen (including yours). A close or equivalent alternative (depending on the reviewer) are the Albrecht Dürers. However, whenever I see reviews of the Supracolor Soft, it’s not clear where those fall on the spectrum. I know CD places them below Aquerelle on their site.
The only thing I notice is that it seems the Supracolor has softer colors than the other two (hence the name). The shades lean more towards pastel or ‘traditional’ water color paint tones vs the other two.
Anyway, sorry for the long post. What are your thoughts/opinion? Many thanks!

As I suspected before I got a look at the lightfast chart. And thanks so much for posting it... The red spectrum has only Light Cadmium Red with three stars. All the rest are two stars or one star. Well, Sanguine is three stars :) Anyway, also, none of the madders or violet range are three stars. So... what are you going to do? I learned the hard way about fugitive colors. Long years ago a friend of mine hung a watercolor in her health food store , near some fluorescent lights. After a couple of months or so I took the painting down. The violets were gray, all traces of violet gone. Perhaps a slightly extreme example but the lightfast conversation needs to be ongoing. Not much has been done to fix the violet colors, and the reds aren't any better either. It's been decades. Why can't the manufacturers come up with synthetic pigments that can hold up better? It's been over thirty years since I had the problem with my watercolor fading issue. I know some progress has been made. At least now Faber Castell includes this lightfast chart. And I'm sure that overall the colors can withstand light better than in decades past...

Nice review. Please, if I win the drawing, pick another name out of the box. I just bought the 120 Durer set - in a tin, not a wooden box mostly because of their extensive pale shade pencil range. Although I love my Derwents (I have sets of both the regular watercolors and the Inktense), I like to begin my paintings with Inktense, which I activate and allow to dry. Then I usually work with regular watercolors over that, and finish with various washes and just dry drawing/shading with watercolor and Inktense pencils. I really like that these are soft enough for the subsequent layering and are good quality enough to use like a regular watercolor. Since you are the expert, I have a quick question for you or anyone else who might know. Do you use a fixative on drawings for which you have used these? I have some Lascaux brand fixative which is sold for lots of different media including watercolors but I have never used it. I worry a bit since in the summer, our house can get really humid and I don't want to deal with too much smearing.

Thank you for the review! Wonderful as always! I would also like to see a review of the Colored Pencil magazine. I've been very curious but have held off due to the print price. If I knew the typical contents (is it tutorials, interviews, reviews, etc) I would feel better about subscribing. Thanks again!

Exciting review! I love colored pencils and watercolors. I haven't tried to do much with watercolor pencils. This review makes me want to try them! I hope I win them, because if I don't I'll have to buy a set to try and explain to my husband why I needed more color pencils!

Very informative review! Though it has been many years since I've used watercolour pencils I can see the difference that a quality product can make. The fact of not being able to completely eradicate pencil lines of inferior pencils with a water wash is a frustration I remember well. Also appreciated the short primer on light safe pigments as some works I created over a decade ago have, indeed, begun to fade. As a recent retiree, I am returning to my artistic roots and would dearly appreciate a chance to work with this quality product. P.S. I found the Art Gear Guide through Colored Pencil Magazine; and the magazine through a link on the CopyIt app developer's web site. Subscribed and now I'm off to read my sample CPM issue and then buy a couple more I expect!

Hi Harry! It's a nice thing you do review on watercolour pencils as there isn't much of them around as it is considered an undervalued medium (at least compared with oil based pencils) and too little people use it, me among them sadly.
I see another user talkinc about what I call a "scratching palette" for mixing watercolour pencils for that I use an ink mixing block, a thing used by chinese and japanese painting who use black soot ink ( sumi-e it's called in japanese) which works well with colour pencils. Alsosome implement to mixing watersoluble media is in Derwent catalogue, if I remember right.

Hi Harry! Hope I made it for the giveaway in time. If not, that's fine, too. :) I've always wanted to try these. I love the concept of WCI pencils but have never been able to get excited about them. I think it's because all the wc pencils I have are "just so-so." These have always looked amazing, so much more vibrant than anything I have. Anyway, thanks for these wonderful giveaways and even more for all your helpful videos. You do great work.
I was worried about you as I hadn't received any new video notifications from you in a long time. When I went in to check on things, my notification bell had somehow been turned off, lol. Off to catch up and relieved your ok. :) (Teresa)

A great informative review - thank you! I do own a small set of watercolor pencils (not Faber Castell) and I have often been frustrated by the lines of my drawing still showing even after activating with lots of water. I just assumed that was the price you pay for using watercolor pencils! WOW am I happy to see that is not the case. I will start saving my pennies now to upgrade to better quality pencils (and/or cross my fingers to win a set). Thank you!

Thanks for the review and the chance to win! I had not considered that being water based I could blend and create many more colours than I could with traditional coloured pencils, but of course you can, duh. I have some beautiful Polychromos, it would be great to add some Albrecht Durers to my ARTsenal !
