    I’m in love with the Neocolor II crayons. Like these, they dissolve beautifully and the colours are wonderfully rich.

      I totally understand why you love the Neocolor so much, they are like little sticks of pigment Dynamite

    The FSC stands for forest stewardship council, means it’s sustainable timber used.

      Thanks, this was a really old video, almost 6 years I think, but I’ve learnt and researched so much more in those 5 or 6 years, interviewing chemists from some of the big companies, talking to CEOs of companies, talking to those working in the lightfast field for ASTM and Blue Wool and especially recently, departments in charge of sustainability, vegan products etc. thank you so much and thank you so much for your support and stopping by the channel, I really appreciate it.

    Glad to see you back! Because of your reviews, I bought a few pencils of the Luminance and Pablos open stock to start with and loved them so much - I bought both full sets. I really rely on your reviews! Also, I am going to subscribe to The Coloring Pencil magazine - it looks awesome! Thanks for sharing and wish you and your family a wonderful new year.

      You are absolutely right I am an idiot I got confused with FSC and the lightfast standard ASTM D4303 (Letter and Numbers corresponding to testing conditions) which is sometimes printed on pencil barrels. I have been asked by a few over the last year to explain the difference between the two standards and although I know a little bit, it is not enough to make an accurate video about. So I have been in touch with the bodies involved to try an establish an accurate account of what exactly is involved in the different methods and why one may or may not be better than the other. I will be making that video once I have all the information collated. I'd much prefer going directly to the companies involved, even regarding my reviews to get information. I feel researching on the internet is not good enough when I am trying to establish accurate accounts for others to read and learn about. The information has to be 100% accurate and as I say, I only feel that can be achieved by going direct to the bodies conducting the standards. But thank you for the correction you are absolutely right.

      No worries! None of use will ever be always right. Afraid I'm a bit cynical about manufacturers claims at times so it's good to see independent reviews.

    I've been eyeing these amazing wc pencils for a year! Definitelly a must have for all artists who love watercolor/water soluble pencils (if they can afford them). The next best choice seems Albrecht Durer ones after all the reviews I've seen. Gorgeous box of pencils! I'm of the similar opinon. It's really nice and "special" to have the box, especially if you're actually gonna keep the pencils in it, but no way I'm paying 50, 100, whatever other sum more for the box, the supplies are sooo expensive as it is, especially for us in low(er) income countries who have to import them, pay even more shipping for the weight etc.

    Happy and healthy New Year to you and your family! One thing I hope you might branch out to do is reviews of some various watercolor brushes. Caran D'Ache makes the best set of waterbrushes that I have used, but other brands are very good as well. These are the types of brushes I suggest using for water soluble color pencils. The artificial hair is just firm enough to push the pigment around and, if the brush is good, the water disbursal is just right for working in pencils. Other brushes are good too. I hardly ever see people working with flat brushes or filberts, but they are very useful especially for water color pencils. Just a suggestion, but I think it would be good so that people realize that it's not necessary to buy a really pricey brush for every use. Two or three decent rounds and a couple more should be sufficient for most uses (so says the person with lots of brushes, but really I don't use that many.)

    I am totally new to adult coloring and I been up all night watching different videos and trying to decide what set of pencils should I get. •Caran D'Ache Museum Aquarelle Pencil Set - Assorted Set of 76,
    •Neocolor II Artists' Crayon Set - Assorted Colors, Metal Tin, Set of 84, •Caran D'ache Supracolor Metal Box Set Of 40,
    •Derwent Inktense Pencil Set - Assorted Colors, Set of 72. I want them all but the price tags of this pencils are outside of my budget. I need to pick one set and would need advice of the professionals like you, or anyone else reading this comment. Thank you .

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 роки тому +5

      Hi there and thank you for your comment and I hope I can help. The pencils and sets that you have listed are amazing pencils. The Caran d’Ache Museum Aquarelle are by far the most superior watercolor pencils I have used and they have excellent lightfast ratings. Now lightfast ratings are only important if you plan on selling your work, so if you are not at that point just yet you could get the Museum at a later date or if you have plans to sell your work get them now and learn with the. I know they are expensive, but once you have the set, you have it for life cause as each pencil runs out you just buy that single pencil to replace it.
      The Neocolor are incredible but I wouldn’t recommend them to learn with because they are best used with a palette as opposed to directly drawing with them on watercolor paper. The Derwent intense are also amazing pencils, but if you are knew to watercolor pencils I wouldn’t recommend starting with them because they are ink and when they dry they are permanent, whereas with watercolor pencils if you make a mistake you can re-wet and lift the Color or fix the mistake.
      If you have the money for the Museum 76, the other set you could look at is the Caran d’Ache Supracolor Soft 80 set, the 40 would be okay as well because whatever set you decide to get, if you buy the Caran D’Ache Palette Aquarelle which I have reviewed bit.ly/2IGV8ut and I completely transforms any watercolor pencil.
      There are other watercolor pencils that are much cheaper just not the high quality of the pencils you mentioned in your comment. They are still really good pencils, just not incredibly high quality. Koh-I-Noor Mondeluz are really nice and their biggest set is 72 at the minute and Lyra Rembrandt have a watercolor set equally good. I have reviewed both of them on my channel if you are interested. This is the link for the Mondeluz review bit.ly/2AKEM49 and this is the link for the Lyra bit.ly/2GlsrCv.
      Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment

    Happy New Year to you as well. Thanks for this review, I'm undecided whether I want to save up for the Aquarelle line or Luminance, to be honest. I do think I'm better off with the Museum Aquarelle though considering they can be used dry and wet and look awesome either way.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  6 років тому

      I think it really all depends on what type of art you like doing. If you love portraiture art for example, I don't think there is a better set of pencils than the Luminance range, the colors in that 76 are amazing. I think you have a really difficult choice to make because both sets are really the very best of their respective groups.

    • @CassPierson
      @CassPierson 6 років тому +1

      I guess it's more a decision of which I get first. I'm only starting out with drawing, at the moment I'm mostly doing colouring in. My first goal is to learn how to draw dragons, but I find it a bit daunting. I think I'm probably just going to have to break it down into smaller items (eyes, scales, claw, etc) before putting it together! I used to think of myself as having absolutely no artistic talent, it took a lot of youtube videos and reading for me to understand that it's a skill like any other and with practise I can become at least good. I'm trying to draw something every day, but I'm failing a bit with taking the time ...

    • @lisathaviu1154
      @lisathaviu1154 6 років тому +2

      If you want to draw dragons, may I butt in and suggest that you go on a field trip to a zoo and draw the reptiles? Or view some videos on reptiles and draw from that. You can always draw from photos, but one reason I suggest drawing some actual reptiles (and possibly, amphibians) is that you will get a sense of the movements they make and the colors they make (and the way those colors shift), in the light. Also, for drawing live reptiles, you might want to keep your drawing tools simple, such as drawing in regular pencil, which can be erased. Working in charcoal or chalk is a good way to draw for a beginner since it keeps you loose, but it is somewhat impractical at home since charcoal is too messy for many people and one needs to work larger than one t be accustomed.

    • @CassPierson
      @CassPierson 6 років тому

      Thanks for the tips, Lisa, I'll give that a try. I hadn't thought about it in those terms yet. The only thing I manage is adding some really simple things in the background if I have something to copy from. I'll give videos and regular pencil a go.

    • @lisathaviu1154

      One thing that might help is that it sounds as if you are trying to draw every day. I started doing that a couple of years ago. I bought a few cheap notebooks and some pens I really liked using and started to draw something, even if it is just doodling, every day. I think it has helped my drawing a lot.

    Stonehenge makes a very decent black watercolor paper, if you have need for some. I THINK IT's only 90 lb. thought but their 90 lb. is nicer than a lot of 140 lb. paper. BTW, I decided awhile ago that these were the very best watercolor pencils, although I haven't tried them for dry work. I just discovered some quite nice and amazingly inexpensive oil-based colored pencils at Amazon (USA)--Schpirerr Farben 72 pencils for under $30!). I buy watercolor pencils largely for the color so have a number of brands. Albrecht Durers dissolve nicely but not as well as the Aquarelle's, IMO.

    Hi Harry, such a great review iv brought these pencils and love them :) can u recommend a sharpener for these please I have a few and none fit, but don't wanna fork out for a caran d'ache one.
    Thanks Nat 😊

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Nat don’t worry you don’t have to fork out for the Caran D’Ache sharpener it is crazy prices. There are a couple I could recommend and I have used them all on the Museum Aquarelle without any issues and they don’t cost the earth.
      The first one amzn.to/3cuOUwK is a hand held one but is probably my favourite of all the sharpeners I’ve used you can buy extra blades, a pack of 10 for about £4 they last a while and they are incredibly sharp. The sharpener itself is from M&R a German company so you know the build quality is incredible.
      Next up is the M&R Handcrank sharpener, same company and you have control to vary the length of point on the pencil. amzn.to/2oH5RyM
      Finally the Derwent Superpoint, they do have a mini Superpoint but I have not personally used that one so can’t say whether or not the Museum Aquarelle fits but the larger sharpener definitely takes them amzn.to/2Tee2jJ
      I did a video a while back showing these sharpeners but it was a while ago and the audio and video is not as good as my more recent videos. bit.ly/2oECehE just click the link to find out more about them and I have added links directly to the sharpeners if you decide to buy one.
      I hope this has helped you out a bit and thank you so much for your question and kind comment

    There are many beautiful watercolor pencils, but these seem to be the best of the best. Haven't seen such a pencil that brings out such a vibrant pigment when activated, there is a *crystal clear* difference between the dry and the activated pencil marks, that I cannot see with other pencils, it's shocking

    Should I go for this the inktense or the albrecht durer??

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 роки тому +1

      Miriam Livian Although both pencils are water soluble they are both very different pencils, but they are both beautiful high quality pencils. I don’t like telling people which product I like best because I want you to pick the product that is best for you and what you want to do with it rather than my opinions. But what I would love to do is help you make that choice by telling you about both products. The first thing is the set sizes and therefore pigment numbers. The Albrecht Durer has 120 pigments and the Inktense has 72 pigments, but the the Inktense also have a set of 72 blocks, same pigment as the pencils, but the blocks give you an extra dimension to your art. The Inktense are essentially Ink whereas the Albrecht Durer are Watercolor. So when you put a layer of the Inktense down, when the layer dries that’s it, it is permanent. The Albrecht Durer you have a little bit of time etc in terms of drying time, removing pigment etc. There both excellent pencils and it is a tough decision to make as to which one is the best. I have reviewed both, but in all honesty I don’t think I did good enough reviews for either product, they both deserved a lot mor than I was able to give them at the time. I will get round to redoing one day

    Is it just me or is anyone else not really a fan of the packaging of these pencils? I don't mean the cardboard packaging (I think that looks nice), I mean the pencils themselves. They almost look like a Derwent pencil or something. They just don't look as high end as Albrecht Durer's or Caran D'Ache's other products.
