+Ryu Lord idk about that, maybe your skills were slow, I have this car and I have a friend that has a coupe who smashed on a 2015 mustang in the canyons. besides your brother probably didn't know set the car up.
Yeah. I work at America's Tires and he came in to install tires. He kindly popped the hood for me, and even let me snap a few pictures. Also saw this car run at Laguna Seca.
I used to own one of these, bought it new back in the day, the only problem I had was with the plastic radiators would allways crack, its a good idea to swap out for a brass radiator, it was a easy fix
I knew and aprecciatef this car long before I watched Initial D. Probably my favourite Toyota ever, but why does everybody only "understand" that is a great car because of the anime/manga? It´s been a light, capable RWD car way before the manga was first drawn.
That's a kouki 86-87 model. It is an 1986 model. You can tell the difference cosmetically from the outside from the door decals, front grill, the front corner signals and eye lids, the rear tail lights and license plate garnish.
I don't know how you got 108 horsepower with the 4age blacktop, thats less than the stock 4age on the 86 usdm and jdm, or maybe you mean the sr5 or ae85, which stock had 80+ horsepower, either that you've mistaken an 85 for an 86, or the engine you got is heavily detuned. Either way that is one nice sounding blacktop.
Incorrect on multiple accounts. The US got an AE86 chassis with 4AC motor, it was sold as a Corolla SR5. The AE88 Chassis which was sold as a Corolla GT-S had minor chassis construction differences but had the 16V 4AGE that came in the AE86 chassis in Japan. We got both chassis and motor, they just came separate. The AE86/4AGE combination was sold in Australia/New Zealand, Europe, etc in addition to Japan.
if I could gain back all the $$$ I put in my corolla I would leave the 86 scene but I'm so deep into it that I can never go back. make sure you're ready to commit into these cars before you buy one otherwise look for something else.
That "crossover" is an evolution of TVIS which is toyota's variable intake system. It essentially closes off the long intake runner ports and switches to shorter ports for the shortest path and densest air. I believe Toyota was the first or one of the first to play around with variable timing systems in the production market and TVIS was out in the 80's and then turned into VVTI which has no lift. Just cam timing and phasing. VVTLI is Toyota's VTEC
TechnoToyTuning, and BattleGarage among many other shops either manufacture performance parts for the ae86 in house or can get whatever you need or point you in the right direction to get whatever it is you're looking for when upgrading an ae86. There's also many other shops that I didn't mention, just do research. They are not lacking, just costs money. Trust me, I know!
"My mom bought the car and I'm a snowflake so I drove the car all the way up this road here and then I drove it back up that road and mom said stop so I did and so yeah I have no idea what this car is but thanks."
lots of problems with this car and the owner, first of all this car isn't an 1985 its obviously a kouki "86-87" so that's a major facepalm that the owner doesn't even know what his car is.. secondly the blacktop should have close to 170hp not 110, 4age 16v bluetops "stock engine" came with 110hp not 70... the swap was probably done poorly or the engine is bad, id be willing to bet that this car had more power stock regardless if he admits it or not. sad to see such a nice car made un original. but at the same time at least it wasn't drifted into a guard rail like most.
The car is registered as a 1985. If it's not, then there's an issue with the title before it got transferred from the previous owner. Regarding hp, most Blacktops are overrated from the factory. The Toyota /expert/mechanic who's done multiple swaps informed the owner and me that 108 to the wheels is consistent with what he's seen before. Lastly, this 86 isn't a drift car. It's a track/weekend car.
One more thing. Stock 16v motors dyno around 80whp so 108 is a big step up percentage wise. I've driven the car in bone stock form with 100k miles, it felt much quicker after the swap.
its vey easy to tell an 85 and an 86-87 ae86 apart, first of all zenki "85's" only came in two colors fire engine red, and silver. zenki and koukis also have different decals, interiors, eyelids, bumpers, grills and much more. its very possible that this car was made very late in 1985, but was sold only in 1986 therefore its a kouki. may want to let the owner know this so he doesn't embarrass himself in front of someone. as for where you're getting your dyno numbers i don't know, iv'e never heard of toyota overrating anything, if anything they underrate their cars. and if they did overrate their cars they wouldn't by 60hp... a healthy blacktop should have around 140hp to the wheels. and a healthy 16v should put down over a hundred to the wheels.
+zum I've seen that Blacktops can dyno 130whp but that's with open stacks. This car was running filters which can cause a loss of 20whp according to some owners. It's also running a stock cat despite having HKS catback and OBX headers. Either way, the numbers don't lie and the car achieved 108 on that particular day with those particular conditions. A Blacktop swapped AW11 also achieved 108 on the same dyno, different day. As for kouki vs zenki, that wasn't even mentioned in this video. It's a 1985 according to the records, so no correction is needed.
Zygrene my point is that its an 1986 regardless of the title saying 1985. even if it was built in 85 it should be called an 86. from my research the title should say 1986 anyways, even being built in 1985, must have had a mishap somewhere along.
i owned a 1991 toyota camry dx and it died i will miss my camry that car meant a lot to me i respect ivan ironman stewart hes a retired off road racer who helped toyota sell vechicles and had his own team team toyota
watch all 83 initial d episodes, lol! you forgot hot version too, haha. now, sorry for the novel. i just finished my 20v in my mr2 a month ago. that power figure seems low tho. i ran 116whp uncorrected on a mustang, low-reading dyno at 90 degrees and 5280 ft. my corrected number was 144, sounding close to the factory rating. mine has the stock surge tank (plenum) stock header, etc. i'm running a conversion b-pipe to a 2.5" exhsust, so nothing really modded. my buddy at 3k was 119whp, too. in regards to the final iteration 20v (blacktop), which this looks like you get many things over the 1st gen 4a: - 7 rib vs 3 rib block and different shape block bottom - bigger rod ends 42mm/20mm vs 40mm/18mm -high compression 11.0:1 vs 9.5:1 - oil squirters (earliest availible was 92-93 16v with small port) -more aggressive cams 255 vs iirc 244 on the 16v - vvt is on/off unlike modern vvti which has a lot more range of variability - 16v tuned powerband in the 1st 2 versions of the 16v with Toyota Variable Intake System (had a bigger intake port on head and 2 runners /cylinder. vac operated butterflies in intake manifold would close off during low rpm to increase intake site velocity and open around 4300rpm to improve ve flow) - the blacktop 20v came from factory with a tube header, larger exhaust ports than the Silvertop (ae101 generation vs ae111 on the blacktop), map vs afm, and a ton of rotational weight savings (thin, light rods, machined down flywheel, machined cam lobe backs) - oh and the 1st gen 4a had a 200mm flywheel and clutch where the 2nd-5th (4th and 5th being 20v) were 212mm. also, all 4a blocks got the bigger rod ends and 7 rib blocks late 87
+Bushtail Razorback Thanks for the details, you really know your Toyotas lol. I'm wondering if you ran 116whp because of the MR layout. The FR layout of the AE86 means there's additional power loss through the drive shaft. This AE86 has ITBs, OBX headers, and HKS catback but stock cat, so probably only a few hp gain at most vs stock.
+Zygrene , the 4a and 3s breathe really well. idk how much loss the fr format loses, cuz my buddy has mods done to his 86 and my other buddy drifts and doesn't take as much as his, so there isn't an apples to apples comparison. the 86 is really interesting as its a live rear axle that can handle pretty well. also, Toyota seems to down tune with cams where Hondas restrict intake and exhaust
Bushtail Razorback Yes, it's hard to do a fair comparison with all the variables. And I could feel the live rear axle just a bit in the bumpier corners on partial throttle. Nothing major since I wasn't pushing too hard. Car handles great at 7 or 8 tenths. Let me know when you want to do a video on your AW11!
+Zygrene yeah, i will. I'd have to do it prob next year as I'm in Denver and the passes are about to get snowy. also, it will prob be on a/s tires cuz 3k plus on 200 tw is a set of tires, lol
John Smith Appreciated. I currently don't use any other social media, but I really should. I have an Instagram (fentaun) that I hardly touch but feel free to follow. I may ramp it up soon.
Okay, thanks for the heads up! And alright, if you decide to get more please let us know, lol. I'll check it out, thank you! Looking forward to more videos :D
guys, if you want this car so much but couldn't find one available to buy, here's an alternative: - get a 4A-GE engine like this or 4A-GZE made for 90s MR2 - get a cheap 1986 Pontiac Acadian 2-door hatchback. dump the original engine - replace the Pontiac's grill with a Levin aftermarket one. do the same with the badges & emblems - voila. you have yourself an ae86 nonetheless. you're welcome.
+DIMON1358 +DIMON1358 I didn't say it will look good. It's just happens to be in similar type of platform. After all, Acadian is a rebadged Isuzu, which means an engine swap from an 80's Japanese hatchback coupe to another won't be a problem. If you got a better body shell complete with chassis and drivetrain to house the 4A-GE in similar budget, feel free to mention 'em.
Man i know you were excited to drive that, I know i would have been. I'm from Kansas so its hard to come across an 86 with a 4a in it. The only one I've gotten to drive was a sr5 model with the carbonated single cam lol. In my opinion, The 4a series engine has one of the very best rev notes ever made. i would prefer that sound over vtec any day, though they both make wonderful engines its just something about the 4a that i love. I probably wouldn't own one due to the market for parts around here or anywhere unless its purely a project car in respects of restoring and making it a fun canyon carver. but i would love to drive one. Have you driven a 16v 4a 86? if so how would you compare 20v 4 in terms obvious differences? Either way nice review.
+Edward Andrews Yes, I was the most excited to drive this car. I have driven this same AE86 back when it was bone stock. Stock 16v, stock suspension, wheels, etc. The 20v feels like a big step up, relatively speaking. Still a "slow" car on the straights, but 108whp feels just about right for the size/weight/grip of the car. It's 30-35% more power than the stock 16v, which didn't rev as high and obviously didn't sound anywhere near as aggressive as the 20v with open ITBs, headers, and exhaust. Also, stock suspension was comfy but allowed too much body roll. And the stock brakes were garbage. Fresh rotors, SS lines, and proper pads make a huge difference.
+Art C. While his car was in the shop, Matt and I debated for hours on whether he should get the 4AGZE or 4AGE Blacktop 20v. We ended up agreeing that 8200rpm NA is the way to go for fun power delivery and sound.
+Zygrene good thing you guys went with the 20v , I had a 4agze on my 86 and it was very sensitive to water and air temps. No wonder a lot of people get rid of there SC. Where did you get your wire harness done? I might be going 20v or beams 3sge since they are way cheaper at this point with the 6speed trans
+MrFujiwara AE86 It's unclear whether the chassis code is really AE86 or AE88. Wikipedia says "In North America, the top-spec DOHC 4A-GEC was sold as the Corolla GT-S (with AE86 on the build plate in the engine bay but AE88 in the VIN)"
MrFujiwara AE86 The owner of this car and I also verified it. The VIN contains 'AE88' but the engine bay 'AE86' printed on it. Look at this photo here: scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xta1/v/t34.0-12/12064424_10153829384748243_372460587_n.jpg?oh=fa6ca729b99a196a3c79ecde92f6d2a6&oe=56199434
+Zygrene It's pointless, the nickname comes from the chassis which is ae86 regardless of what DM it is. People act like the "88" is even worse than an 85. Some people might tell you it's important to distinguish them because the JDM 4age made more power, but that's pointless because we don't treat the JDM and USDM S13's differently, and they have entirely different engines.
James Kolanko Techinically you’re wrong because the Ae86 came with two trims. The GT Apex is the sporty 4AGE tuned one and the GT-S is the Economically tuned 4AGE. The GT Apex made 128 HP and I think the GT-S made around 110 HP.
Economically tuned 4A-GE? So it's basically like a 4A-FE. I have a AE101, equipped with a 4A-FE 16v, I really wanted to swap this engine with a 4A-GE 20v Blacktop.
Danny O How much is the AE88? I want a AE86 as a first car but it’s unreachable for me. So the AE88 is the American Model. So it should be easier to find. Because demand is higher on the 86 than 88. How much is the AE88?
Not really interested in the car, i'm interested in that engine. I want to engine swap my 4A-FE with the Blacktop 4A-GE 20v. P.S This car was in NFS:U2 and it was ass when it was modified to the max.
Admit it - you tilted the screen when you watched the part where he's stated driving in this video like you're holding an old Sega handheld. Admit it. You did it. You know who you are. You're reading this now and you're clicking thumbs up.
>Says its an ae86 >Title says 1985 Toyota Corolla GT-S >All ae86 cars were the Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-APEX hatch back models in the JDM market. >The front grill is missing the Trueno badge >It is also left hand drive > "But muh similarities tho >:C"
Believe it or not, i paused this video and watched all of initial D, then continued it a month later.
+DarkNight Two thumbs up for you! Was this video better after watching Initial D?
The video didn't improve but my understanding did. I like your taste in cars judging by what you review. Good job mate
+DarkNight Thanks! Just uploaded a new video so check it out. I've mostly fixed the audio issues plaguing my previous videos.
That's good to know
+DarkNight at what point did u pause it? 10 mins in? I love how Initial D teaches you drifting techniques (the cartoon series did)
The sound of the engine ♥.♥ I really want a corolla gt-s AE-86 but i'm in Mexico, i want to restore one and keep it forever with me.
+Ryu Lord terrible at handling? xD you're a fucking idiot.
+Ryu Lord idk about that, maybe your skills were slow, I have this car and I have a friend that has a coupe who smashed on a 2015 mustang in the canyons. besides your brother probably didn't know set the car up.
at first, i thought this car was absolutley nothing. But now, its my baby girl
Takumi Fujiwara YOUR BABY IS TRUENO NOT GTS AMREICA ARE SUCKS WHY WOULD A TRUENO CALLED AN COROLLA TWIN CAM 16
persnickety demon are you stupid?
Oh shit I worked on this car. I did his tires for him haha.
+Chris Van srs?
Yeah. I work at America's Tires and he came in to install tires. He kindly popped the hood for me, and even let me snap a few pictures. Also saw this car run at Laguna Seca.
Chris Van
you must be a Professional petrol head if you helped him xD
nowadays, old cars are getting harder to get repaired
I had two of these in red. U. First one got stolen, and I bought another IDENTICAL car. Miss it dearly but I love my 2021 ACURA TLX A-Spec now :)
Had a 16 valve, blew it up... And put a 20 valve in?
*Sounds familiar...*
I used to own one of these, bought it new back in the day, the only problem I had was with the plastic radiators would allways crack, its a good idea to swap out for a brass radiator, it was a easy fix
again more lies
I actually watched all of intial D before I watched the rest of the video
+Robert johnson that's amazing. Hope you enjoyed!
Third gen MR2, SW20? Haha…
I knew and aprecciatef this car long before I watched Initial D. Probably my favourite Toyota ever, but why does everybody only "understand" that is a great car because of the anime/manga?
It´s been a light, capable RWD car way before the manga was first drawn.
Because that anime is what introduced everyone to the car.
was not born yet
Nice, I have a 1986 coupe swapping the engine out just want to know how you get the 20v to pass smog?
+francisco campos You can't get it to pass smog, legally anyway.
Same sound as "Initial D".
great videos! Your explanation of the VVT system could use some work. :)
That's a kouki 86-87 model. It is an 1986 model.
You can tell the difference cosmetically from the outside from the door decals, front grill, the front corner signals and eye lids, the rear tail lights and license plate garnish.
ChillDude yup and 85 decals are more bigger

Best bang for your buck upgrade for an older car is fresh rotors/pads and steel brake lines.
I swear to god, everyone who owns this car only cares about the anime.
if I could gain back all the $$$ I put in my corolla I would leave the 86 scene but I'm so deep into it that I can never go back. make sure you're ready to commit into these cars before you buy one otherwise look for something else.
+MistermookS Agreed. The AE86 is not for everyone.
+MistermookS lol sounds like a cult, what ever I want in so gimme a corolla lol.
+Fudge You no!!!! Don't do it!!! It's a trap!!!! Lol
MistermookS lol.
camera is ass tho
Your grammar is ass though...
what final gear?

If you adjust when the rev limiter cuts in on the 16v 4A-GE, it'll quite happily rev to a bit over 8500rpm...
s2000 is way too snappy, ae86 is way more predictable and controllable in corners.

Would love to see an IS300 5 speed review I own one and would love to see your opinion on it.
+BillerProductions If anyone has one, let me know! Been wanting to drive an IS300 for years
Dude the IS300 is pretty special in my book, and has been overlooked for years which is also a good thing. You got to drive it to appreciate it.
Are u the 86 that I took pictures of in San Pablo California one year ago
i owned a 1991 toyota camry dx and it died i will miss my camry that car meant a lot to me i respect ivan ironman stewart hes a retired off road racer who helped toyota sell vechicles and had his own team team toyota
I'd never drive on a road like that my God imagine if something goes wrong and you go off the edge
maybe you should change the front grille of the car that has the trade mark trueno word instead of toyota
japanese model came 128hp american 112hp...
Man imagine putting 250 hp to the crank on that engine much putting 205 to 210 to the wheels
He should install the jdm ae86 bumpers :D
Jordan Park I feel you man I hate mine on my 86 it's like a dinner table on the back
Klassen Kustoms IKR ;D my granpa has one exactly like in the vid, but has a usdm front with a Levin rear
HAHA i been looking for it for a wile
I'm from NorCal I like your videos, do u want to review a foxbody?
Awesome, I've been wanting to review some American muscle! Send me an email at fentonsun@gmail and we'll set up a time.
+BigzeeeN I haven't forgotten about your offer. Your foxbody still available?
+Zygrene yeah it's running good now
+BigzeeeN Nice, can you shoot me an email?

in regards to the final iteration 20v (blacktop), which this looks like you get many things over the 1st gen 4a:
- 7 rib vs 3 rib block and different shape block bottom
- bigger rod ends 42mm/20mm vs 40mm/18mm
-high compression 11.0:1 vs 9.5:1
- oil squirters (earliest availible was 92-93 16v with small port)
-more aggressive cams 255 vs iirc 244 on the 16v
- vvt is on/off unlike modern vvti which has a lot more range of variability
- 16v tuned powerband in the 1st 2 versions of the 16v with Toyota Variable Intake System (had a bigger intake port on head and 2 runners /cylinder. vac operated butterflies in intake manifold would close off during low rpm to increase intake site velocity and open around 4300rpm to improve ve flow)
- the blacktop 20v came from factory with a tube header, larger exhaust ports than the Silvertop (ae101 generation vs ae111 on the blacktop), map vs afm, and a ton of rotational weight savings (thin, light rods, machined down flywheel, machined cam lobe backs)
- oh and the 1st gen 4a had a 200mm flywheel and clutch where the 2nd-5th (4th and 5th being 20v) were 212mm. also, all 4a blocks got the bigger rod ends and 7 rib blocks late 87
+Bushtail Razorback Thanks for the details, you really know your Toyotas lol. I'm wondering if you ran 116whp because of the MR layout. Looks like it could benefit from an upgraded steering rack, lots of steering input needed, love these cars tho, defo high up in my top 10
+John Higgins The steering is pretty slow but since it's hydraulically assisted, it's light and easy to use.
its a ae85 trueno
OMG - one of my dream cars! :D thanks for doing a review on it!!!
+John Smith There should be a review of another AE86 with the stock 16v motor coming in the near future. Subscribe and stay tuned!

Sounds like a B series lol no lie
guys, if you want this car so much but couldn't find one available to buy, here's an alternative:
- get a 4A-GE engine like this or 4A-GZE made for 90s MR2
- get a cheap 1986 Pontiac Acadian 2-door hatchback. dump the original engine
- replace the Pontiac's grill with a Levin aftermarket one. do the same with the badges & emblems
- voila. you have yourself an ae86 nonetheless. you're welcome.
+galihxtreme Or just get an AW11 and have the better car (^:
+galihxtreme Acadian dont looks like "good" car.
+DIMON1358 +DIMON1358 I didn't say it will look good. It's just happens to be in similar type of platform. After all, Acadian is a rebadged Isuzu, which means an engine swap from an 80's Japanese hatchback coupe to another won't be a problem. If you got a better body shell complete with chassis and drivetrain to house the 4A-GE in similar budget, feel free to mention 'em.
awesome video and great machine
Initial D is life
Man i know you were excited to drive that, I know i would have been.
Initial D defines an 86.......
+junekowsky onez What about any Hot Version dvd. Millenials
Where is this road at?
+21cdeguia east of Milpitas, CA
Matt - sue said at first when i saw this in his garage that you wanted to put an sw11 supercharger engine in it.
Fred86 All work was done by Su at Aggressive Performance in Santa Clara. BEAMS is a great match for the car as well.
DEJA VU!
Ae88*
+MrFujiwara AE86 It's unclear whether the chassis code is really AE86 or AE88. Wikipedia says "In North America, the top-spec DOHC 4A-GEC was sold as the Corolla GT-S (with AE86 on the build plate in the engine bay but AE88 in the VIN)"
Everybody can edit Wikipedia...
(USDM ae88 Toyota Corolla GTS)*
Im not telling 88 is worse or not.. But name em correctly...
this is in San Jose right? :D
:)
Looks like Sierra Vista Point.
Omg. I want One
+Alexander Sommer me too. But it is extremely rare car. And as everybody knows: "Rarity leads to a high unit price".
sad, but true
a corolla gts isn't a ae86. it's a ae88 and it's not as fast
James Kolanko well its faster than a jdm stock ae86 since hes running a blacktop
You're reading this now and you're clicking thumbs up.
a first gen cr-x would smoke this toyota shit box
Good car, terrible video !
thats the american spec ae88 not the ae86
its an AE88
Boui thats a ae88
>Says its an ae86
>Title says 1985 Toyota Corolla GT-S
>All ae86 cars were the Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-APEX hatch back models in the JDM market.
>The front grill is missing the Trueno badge
>It is also left hand drive
> "But muh similarities tho >:C"
Sierra road lol
