When you said you had trouble getting the bag to fold in a certain way consistently, I instantly thought of that project. That's because the project was located at an institute for bionics and biomimetics, so nature-inspired design. They gave me a bunch of pictures of beetle wings. Those wings are built to always fold in exactly the same way, actuated by only one muscle at the leading edge of the wing. It's a very nifty compliant mechanism powered by elaborate, non-linear folding-patterns. The folds curve in ways that has them pull on each other, so the force of that one muscle on the edge is distributed all along the surface of the wing. Thank you for acknowledging that sewing is a gosh darn skill. Also to everyone wondering: Yes, there is spray on starch that you put on the fabric you're working with and then iron it (a bit lower than the hottest setting) and BOOM stiffer fabric.
There are a group of knitters who create non-euclidian 2-dimensional shapes. I wonder if they could help with creating a bag that could fold out and store compactly.

I love this problem to be solved & the boundaries imposed to solve it in. Very much like your coat hanger problem/solution. The most exciting part is blending Engineering, Physics, Materials, Art, Comfort, & Satisfaction into the void of Creative Reality. Vacuuming your house while it's on fire is actually a very accurate description of the intellectual process required to achieve desired result. Remember, Sherlock Holmes (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) practiced target shooting using the fireplace of his home/apartment to process solutions in the void of criminal analysis/deductive reasoning to discover the unknown. I've worked The Void many times in my life & currently am working The Void to solve Solar Power for my camper van. Thanks Simone for sharing almost 10 minutes of working The Void of this brilliant problem. You know that the work is actually 10 days, weeks, months or more & it never leaves your mind until solved. Ok. Hear me out. This would go AMAZINGLY for gardeners! I am constantly forgetting a harvest bag. But i never forget my hat that protects me from sunburn!
Nice job, nice hat-bag, and nice tip about the corn starch+water solution. Another few sewing tips: Get that no sew, heat bonded, polyamide strips. Bond to one fabric first, remove paper, then bond to the other fabric. Unlike tape, it is safe to sew through and doesn't leave any residue on your needle and thread. It will temporarily stick to even silnylon and silpoly enough that you can handle it and sew it without it coming apart. I like this method better than pins and clips, though, it works less on curves. If doing curves, I do small sections spaced apart, sort of like using pins or clips. The nice thing about it besides not having to remove it like pins and clips, is that it keeps the fabrics more flat than using especially pins, so less distortion tends to happen when you sew. Use an iron with water/steam to fold over edges/hems and get them to stay much better. I sometimes pre wet the fabric first, and then iron it. This tip only applies to synthetic fabrics: Use a hot knife; many times when melting more than one layer of fabric together, they will stick together at the edges, so when you go to sew it, only separate it where you need to. Meanwhile, since you also melted the edges, you don't necessarily need to hem it, unless you need the hem for extra strength. Point is that the individual threads are much less likely to unravel. This is especially so if you do a zig zag, or preferably an overlock stitch, if you have it as an option, on the edge. But yeah, hems are helpful for adding extra strength and durability, so for some applications you don't want to forego it, unless you're going to add multiple rows of stitches (if the fabric is sturdy/strong enough, you can do this). If sewing really thin/light and/or slippery fabrics, put tissue paper underneath the fabric, it helps the feed-dogs get a better grip, and I don't know about you, but when I don't feed my feed-dogs right, they tend to (make me) lose grip on everything from sanity/reality, calmness, and not just the fabrics... Regularly clean out under the inside of the plate (where the bottom bobbin is put) and while doing that, occasionally re-oil with a drop or two of appropriate oil if you have the option. One last and quick tip, and just the tip. You can actually sew lighter to medium weight fiberglass cloth (like 2 to 6 oz/yd2)... _if_ you first siliconize it (silicone caulk thinned with solvent like naphtha and then applied to the fabric with either a brush or soaked in a bag/bucket). Lot's of potential uses for siliconized fiberglass cloth. Sew to the outside of regular fabrics (especially sturdy hemp, flax linen, polyester, and/or nylon) and make cut and fire resistant clothes. Increase the water resistance of clothes while keeping breathability (if you thin the silicone enough and apply it more lightly), dramatically increase strength and durability of other fabrics/garments. Note: It will wear down your needles faster though.

Me too, and yet I still find myself going to the store impromptu and not having a bag with me. I try to remember to leave one in the car, but then I use it to bring stuff in to the house and it never makes its way back to the car.

Great idea! I finally trained myself to bring reusable bags into the store, by not allowing myself to get plastic bags if I forgot. It meant I had to either walk out to the car to get them, or carried groceries out in my arms. That got old, so eventually the habit of grabbing them every time I got out of the car stuck. Love your videos! .
Definitely keep working on it! It may be a little small for regular grocery shopping, but as a bag to have handy for impulse buys it'd be awesome. And hey, it's also a lunch bag you can wear home!
1:37 "And Voila! You've solved a thousand problems... to solve one small problem" and 4:54 "kind of like somebody vacuuming, while their house is on fire..." are the two best maker quotes i've heard 🤣 Thanks for the video, so excited for your next bag/hat type adventure -- Dog hat perhaps? Turn your dog into a nifty hat! Perfect for all occasions!
You want wow factor? The head band of the hat is a metal coil under tension - think pop-tent - they’re held secure until you pull on the brim, separating it and the Velcro-connected pieces of the hat which will become the handles. Structural integrity from the metal frame means you could use a thin silk mesh for the bag itself.
I love this idea especially because inevitably, at some point during the testing process, the Velcro would give out and cause the entire thing to spring outward into bag-mode while it's being worn.
As someone who does lots of grocery shopping via walking and by bike - YES PLEASE! Expandable bags are particularly nice for that because each time you have to expand one it serves as a reminder to be mindful of the remaining space. I have a nice expandable backpack someone gave me as a gift and it helps a ton every farmer's market
That would be excellent to wear for a sudden foraging opportunity, like when you unexpectedly find mushrooms that you have to have as soon as you find them. The mesh would allow the spores of the mushrooms to freely flow out. Maybe the little piece in the middle should be the missing white puzzle piece.
I like that I live in a world that is constantly being bettered by the odd things you bring into it. Even if the things you make prove to be less practical, or even less functional than you had planned, there's always a purely optimistic dream at the heart of every project, which is what makes them so fun to watch. Pure giddy optimism is in short supply these days, so thank you for always being a ready supply.
An idea for a different configuration: The cap is the bottom of the bag. Sew a normal tube bag into the inside of the hat's rim (though you may need a hat without the strap at the back) such that the netting is wider, creating a conical bag with the cap being the narrowest part. Cut out two handles for in the netting near the other end, then roll the netting in on itself. Your hat now has no awkward holes or zippers, but has an easily deployed bag inside of it with no fancy cut panels that require special folding. And best of all, the mesh for the bag can act as a wick for sweat so the hat can keep your head cool in the summer.
I absolutely love this, maybe not the product for me, but the learning from it for yourself and us is really good, it puts into perspective the making of a product and maybe not all the process but a good amount of it... i just love the behind the scenes of stuff.

Hah!!! Love it, maximum functionality. I thoroughly enjoy the Simone story arc from shitty robots to solving real world problems and turning them into products to boot 😅
Brief guest appearance from Laura. I think the end product was waaaaay better than I had anticipated. I think if you keep working on it, you could make a very high quality hat-bag or bag-hat. It's a niche product, but it has many uses. Think about going to the beach, camping, or a picnic, there always seems to be more stuff leaving than when you arrived. Pulling out a bag from your hat would be very convenient.
If you can refine it I'd be willing to buy that. It's a great concept that could really catch on. There are millions of people in the US alone who would used it.
That's actually really incredible as is! I mean, bag form does look a bit wonky but I'm just impressed how good it looked on head after the modifications! I'm always a fan of items that have a secondary function that doesn't negate the looks of the primary function. This feels like a bug out bag no brainer at the very least. If you made it a waterproof hat, someone would use it for an emergency fishing basket, or market it as such...
That soap dispenser has been far and above the most useful of all the kiwico kits my son built. We used it for many years until it finally got retired a month or so ago.
My mom is an avid sewist and calls the starching for assembly purposes "sizing". I also really struggle with sewing as a person who normally works in wood, metal and plastic but it's also super rewarding. Love the video!
To me it would make a lot more sense to use the hat peak as the handle since it's already a rigid part. Having the peak made up of two layers you pull apart to immediately give you the opening of the bag seems a lot neater. Getting the bag double the volume of the hat immediately by building the hat and an identical liner that just pushes in flush with the hat when you put it on would be very simple with no origami at all. It would even be possible to put hand holds through the peak by having stretchy fabric covering the holes until your hand goes into them. The same stretch fabric could hold the layers of the peak together too, so no zips or other fasteners needed either.
Reminds me of the British series “Are you being served?” where one of the characters systematically refers to her cat as her pussy. The times that poor thing got wet...

Simone's quote of the day: "Fuck trying harder, try smarter." 💖

Thank you for acknowledging that sewing is a gosh darn skill. Also to everyone wondering: Yes, there is spray on starch that you put on the fabric you're working with and then iron it (a bit lower than the hottest setting) and BOOM stiffer fabric.
There are a group of knitters who create non-euclidian 2-dimensional shapes. I wonder if they could help with creating a bag that could fold out and store compactly.
I totally thought about crochet as better way to tackle this problem. There are already lots of patterns for crochet market bags that can probably be modified to work with this.

Yessss! I had to do a double take lolll
I saw the thumbnail and thought "oh cool, a hat with a pocket in it to hold a shopping bag". I feel that may have been easier 😂
I also thought this 😅 but I suppose you could forget to reload your bag haha
I think that would work well if it was a hat with more room like a top hat, I dont think you could fit a normal plastic bag into a dad hat like the one Simone wears.
@@Brigand17 You could fit a reusable fabric shopper in if you folded it right
@@lilyfox313 I still get this feeling that it wouldn't fit, but I have never used a reusable fabric shopping bag so I wouldn't know. Would be funny if you could send me a picture/vid of that though, haha.
@@Brigand17 I mean, it would probably change the shape of the hat slightly when it was on, it wouldn't be flat, but it would fit I think. Google the type of bag, I can't send it somewhere like here

nananananana bagman!
This is relatable. About 30 years ago I studied design at the academy of arts. I had a similar idea, and I also tried one that turned into a rain poncho. Neither prototypes really worked in the end but I learned a TON about working with fabrics. It's still magic to me.
The fact that yours works, and still looks like a proper hat (LOL), well, hats off, pun intended :P Great vid!
Great to see how hyped she was after getting the compliment from the cashier. So great to see someone so successful still take joys in the “little” things!
You need to not take it off until they ask you then look around pat your pockets and go, "uh, no" and THEN take it off. Also I love when you do these projects that turn out more serious than what you think going in because I've watched you forever.
I knooow. My mom watched the video and was like "why did you take the hat off before they asked" and I did it because I was SO NERVOUS for some inexplicable reason.

This is, and always has been, my favorite place to work. Nearly impossible to describe to others because it is The Void.
Thanks for the kinship & video.
Ok. Hear me out. This would go AMAZINGLY for gardeners! I am constantly forgetting a harvest bag. But i never forget my hat that protects me from sunburn!
I think I would want a bag that fits into the hat but I could just remove it and keep wearing the hat, though.
Harvest bag? That's what the bottom of your shirt's for! 😆
"It's not the bag-hat I wanted" has probably never been spoken before. You made history, Simone!
I would absolutely buy this if you made it a Yetch product! Also, I loved the reveal that Laura was one of the people filming you at the supermarket. I always love when you make videos together, and it's just nice to see you hanging out!

Great idea! I finally trained myself to bring reusable bags into the store, by not allowing myself to get plastic bags if I forgot.
Was thinking the same thing!
Telescopic top hat as bag?
I love this idea especially because inevitably, at some point during the testing process, the Velcro would give out and cause the entire thing to spring outward into bag-mode while it's being worn.

That would be excellent to wear for a sudden foraging opportunity, like when you unexpectedly find mushrooms that you have to have as soon as you find them. The mesh would allow the spores of the mushrooms to freely flow out.
Maybe the little piece in the middle should be the missing white puzzle piece.

this hat is such a cool idea. Espechially because it is not just one of those keychain bags attached to a hat but because the hat IS the bag.
That’s a great idea! you could also roll it out for a makeshift musquito net
9:15 - Considering you're the only one _in_ the race, I'm pretty sure you did win.
The dramatic music leading up to putting all those apples in your hat was so much fun, but your smile in your great success was priceless!

I'm amazed by how inventive you are. You don't give up, no matter how weird or complicated it is. You're a badass!
Now I have to find out if it’s a cowboy hat, top hat, a trucker hat, a random other guy hat. Those are all the hats. Lol.

"looks awkward, but getting the job done" is probably a accurate description of me 😆
I would buy the hell out of this in 5 different colors, please. Keep it up!
Say "It makes it stiffer and easier to work with." without smiling. Exactly.
Reminds me of the British series “Are you being served?” where one of the characters systematically refers to her cat as her pussy. The times that poor thing got wet...
I vote for "stiffer and more desirable when unzipped..."
