  • Bass Bites: small, digestible bits of tips, tricks, licks and more for the double bass, in under 10 minutes.
When playing over minor chords or in minor keys, although playing a simple root and fifth works, adding the minor third can add dimension and "flavor" or "color", while at the same time reinforcing the sound of the minor chord. In this "nibble", we look at snippets of "Wayfaring Stranger" and "Muddy Water" (Phil Rosenthall) as examples of tunes where adding the minor third can be really effective and give your bass lines variety.

Thank you. Your voice and playing are a nice way to start the day. I used to get a little overwhelmed by arpeggios as a beginner. Now, as an immediate player it’s a fun map. Gamechanger. Helps one feel instead of think.

Thanks! And what a great analogy-arpeggios are a fun map. Exactly! It's a great way to feel, trust, and move with the music instead of overthink it 😃
