Bass Bites: Practicing Confidence Part 1, using jam tracks and building a bass line
Bass Bites: small, digestible bits of tips, tricks, licks and more for the double bass, in under 10 minutes.
What sets apart beginning players from intermediate players from advanced players from professionals? Experience, sure, but, I think, also confidence. And confidence can be practiced as well as earned.
Here, I demonstrate one use of jam tracks and how to practice with confidence, starting simply by hitting root notes and down beats, then adding other notes of the chord, more complex rhythm, and ghost notes. This exercise uses iReal Pro, but any jam track would work.

Here, we look at several different bass line ideas for a fairly simple chord progression. We start with roots, change...

    Thanks for the tips, very helpful as always. I do have to comment on two jewels I found quite recently that in combination have made my recordings extremely natural and I can not even think of doing without. One is the microphone "Nadine" by Ear Trumpet labs. The sound it has is great, I don't feel like I need any extra microphones, and the position that it's in is so comfortable I completely forget it, there is nothing to bump into (like a mic on a stand) and just plays very well with my two double basses I own. The other is the pedal called "Colour box v2" from JHS, it's made with high quality components inspired by the Neve consoles from Abbey Road. It can do eq and preamp of course, but it can also tone shift which always agrees and fits in very well with other instruments. The preamp can of course be set-up with high distortion in the style of the Beatle's Revolution, but it also is amazing with acoustic amplification with lots of headroom, phantom pass-through, XLR inputs and outputs, and as mentioned, with the mic Nadine is just ridiculous. What I hear in the room is exactly what this pair gets to capture in the recording. Must have for double bassist. So much that everyone should know about this pair and their combination.

    I'm not familiar with the term ghost note, what does that mean exactly?

    • @anneluna6612
      @anneluna6612 27 днів тому

      Great question! A ghost note is an intentionally muted note, so it's more percussive and rhythmic than a note that rings out and is more melodic.

    Nicely explained! Your fingering technique isn't Simandl, what is it? That bass seems pretty killer and has a nice tone in your hands. Not enough 5-string uprights around these days. Respect, Ms. Luna.

    • @anneluna6612
      @anneluna6612 Місяць тому

      Thank you! Actually, from my classical training days and Simandl books, I think this fingering sure follow the Simandl recommendations with half steps between the index and middle fingers, as well as between the middle and pinky when in the lower positions, and a whole step between the index and pinky (and subbing the ring finger up the neck for the pinky). The 5-string is a beast! But worth it, I think ☺️ Thanks for the comment and taking time to check things out here!
