I would suggest that there were dozens of reasons these great roads eventually failed, or at a minimum had to reorganize. Those would include greedy unions (featherbedding, work rules), tax regulations (local,state and federal), changes in the industrial base of the region, many time just dismal service to customers forcing them to use more trucks on the rapidly expanding Interstate System. ( Just to name a few)
