There has been talk about how Disney executives hated Johnny’s take on Captain Jack Sparrow. If these movies had been played as the typical pirate persona, they would have been horribly cliché and boring. Johnny’s portrayal of the character was what made this franchise such a huge success, elevating it into something unique and monumentally watchable. I've heard the same thing. They saw a few raw footage scenes and asked Depp if his character was supposed to be gay because of the way he walked and just his slightly effeminate mannerisms. They were about to pull the plug on him, lol.

I know a muscular weight lifter guy that is gay but not a flamer, I went hiking and bike riding with him and another friend for a year and didn’t know he was gay for a year until the other friend told me. He said couldn’t you tell, I said no, I guess my gaydar doesn’t work, or may I just don’t care. Me and my other friend are male hetero btw. On the other hand I have known guys with effeminate speech patterns that weren’t gay, so for me it’s hard to tell. One time I did an urban hike in San Francisco on St. Patrick’s day and there was this big muscular guy in a green dress. I definitely though THAT particular guy was gay and one of my male friends was offended because he was of Irish heritage. Well I’m more Irish than he is and I just thought it was funny. I don’t mind gay guys as long as they keep their hands off my knees.
He had Keith Richards as his father and Paul Mc Cartney as his uncle in this movie. No one else but Johnny Depp could pull this off. It was their respect of him as a guitarist, a human being and a really nice guy

It's crazy. When I saw the first film I remember Depp saying how he used Keith Richards as inspiration for the character. When you actually see him talk and the way he moves, you can see he got it down so perfectly it's actually quite scary!
even when he's not acting he's still exactly like a drunk pirate. This speaks so highly of Johnny: Keith Richards and Paul McCartney both acted as relatives of his on the movie, and did so gladly.
It's even funnier when you realise that Keith is more like Jack Sparrow when he isn't concentrating on trying to be more like Jack Sparrow for the film. Depp's mimicry of his mannerisms is impeccable.
