Cass was the true vocal talent in the Mamas and the Papas. So much so that she had to really rein in her voice so she wouldn't overwhelm the other's voices. Even though she recorded this as a solo number, due to contractual obligations, it was released under the M & P name.

Each had their own problems or demons, if you will. But each left us with a uniqueness in their music that we are so fortunate to be able to see, listen to, and appreciate again today. I just read that Mamas and Papas used to sing this song just for fun having been introduced to it by Michelle Phillips whose dad had been friends with the song's writers. Mama Cass was the group member who suggested that they record the song. In the version from Mamas and Papas (which I just checked out), Mama Cass whistles at the end and there's a lot of ragtime like piano. She wasn't satisfied with this version, changed it up and released it on her first solo album. I haven't heard that version but I guess the song featured here is like the version released on Mama Cass' solo album (correct me if wrong).

Some mistaken media reports had her choking on a ham sandwich, leading to the black joke 'If only Karen Carpenter had eaten that sandwich, they would both be alive today.' This a very old song (1931), the days when lovers just kissed 'nighty-night' and dreamed of each other. Another nice one, Dani. You honed right in on her on her skilful contrast of tenderness and vocal power.

Mama Cass was mocked by many for her size, yet she was nowhere near as big as some singers by today's standards. As for her voice - utterly beautiful. She made it look effortless.
I totally agree with you on her style and delivery. I think there is a tendency for some singers (especially today it seems) to try too hard. Using the song to showcase and show off the "virtuosity" of their vocal chords. It's fine to do that in that right places in the right amount, but no overkill. I think it's the stuck in "America's got Talent" syndrome where competition comes into play and I guess it may be appropriate to some degree, there. But the SONG is what it's all about...the melody, words etc. The singer shouldn't get "in the way" of the song. Because you are a songwriter you get that. I really enjoy your videos. Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox! lol
