Dorian's separation won the day. I was so outraged in 97 when he won over Nasser. I could not believe it. Until I saw them posing on video. Dorian had insane separation that held up even in his worst year. Even with his body being as fucked up as it was, he looked better when looking at them in motion. I hate saying this, I don't think anyone beat Dorian that year. Nasser was a fucking beast, but Dorian looked so much sharper. Bodybuilding is an illusion game. Dorian in motion was unbeatable. In pictures, I completely agree with Lui.

Nobody should win a sandow with a visibly torn muscle. 1994 was either Shawn's or Kevin's (Dorian was 3rd at best). 1995 was all Kevin Levrone with Dorian being 2nd (he actually looked good apart from the bicep), 1996 was Shawn's even though Nasser came in looking his best (Dorian should've been 3rd or 4th), 1997 was a disgrace. He shouldn't have even placed top 6 if we keep politics out of it.

Great video !! I remember this Olympia and at the time was skeptical how anyone could win the Mr O with half of their left bicep missing!!! Now that you put them side by side you can really see the politics of professional BB as nasser was the clear winner. A similar thing happened the last time Ronnie Coleman competed in Mr O -he did so with a piece of his back missing but that time they got it right as JC was correctly awarded (despite having A waist that is just too dam wide to truly deserve the honor) Also, i always thought that Of the three Mr O's awarded to Frank Sane - Robby Robinson should have won at least one of them (go back and look at the photos - it was criminal)
Everyone gives the front lat spread to Dorian but I don’t think he’s close here. Nasser has the better chest, shoulders, and legs in the FLS. I have several guys beating Dorian in this pose, the lats just aren’t as important in the front pose as from the back.
This is a perfect example of why I lost interest in bodybuilding competition in my late teens. I remember this and it just sickened me. Once I woke up to just how much politics played a part in bodybuilding that was me done. I just trained for health and personal satisfaction, but to me, bodybuilding had become a complete joke. I was so angry and felt frustration for the guys that were clearly robbed.

My honest take on it: 1) Dorian Yates is my second favourite bodybuilder after Ronnie Coleman! 2) Dorian Yates DID not deserve to win the 1997 Mr. Olympia, or the second place for that matter. 3) The front double biceps pose of Dorian Yate in the 1997 Mr. Olympia is one of the most disturbing and disgusting poses EVER because of his arms meltdown. (Did he damage BOTH biceps??? I know that his biceps weren't his best muscles but they completely melted in the 1997 Olympia!) 4) I wouldn't call Dorian's gut a "bubble gut"; yes it was larger than other competitors but it wasn't out of control. 5) Dorian's legs were also sub-bar. A new breed of mass monsters had arrived in the shape of Nasser El-Sonbaty that completely outclassed Dorian. 6) Dorian's back was better than Nasser's but it did not completely outclass Nasser's.
This is a great example of why body building can't be in the Olympics from my perspective. Not even talking about drug testing, there's just no way to score competitors fairly without allowing "politics" to effect the scoring.
In order to be an 'outsider' who wins an olympia, you have to beat the champ who is on a running streak ( we know they like their streaks) by probably 105-110%. If you only beat the champ by a 5% they won't give it to you. It has to be VERY obvious, not just kinda obvious

The funny thing is that how Yates looked at 97 was something new and everybody thought he didn't look good. Somehow that look became the norm for alot of competetors in Olympia afterwards =/ So Yates was in the shift of the massmonsters but also in the shift of "palumboism"

...I mean Nasser was a known user of Synthol. So Lui was defending the guy on stage using Synthol. If I recall correctly Yates was recovering from a series of injuries and that was a predominant issues throughout his career; even the reason he was forced to retire. Dorian may not have come out strong in this Olympia, but you have to realize this isn't as much politics necessarily as Marketability. The ifbb builds dynasties for guys to win for a few consistent years and have them market supplements. Dorian was one of the greatest of all time, but like so many others they saw real competition and really they probably had bias from the judges because the judges were making money off of that guy than the other competitors.
Nasser had oil in his delts and biceps in the '97 Olympia. His arms look squishy and you can see the injection bumps in his biceps and delts. Apparently folks don't think judges can spot that from a mile away. Nasser also never flexed his mid back and glutes in any of the back poses either. Poor execution takes away from his physique too.
I live in the uk, and was in Business with Dorian for a number of years. I was at that show and while i was a fan i know that Nasser was robbed. i said as much to Dorian and we never spoke after that.
Kevin Levrone should have won. He was absolutely perfect front to back. I still think Kevin looked his best at this Olympia. His back was better than ever and Nasser just didn't have the back to beat these guys. Kevin's legs were perfect size to match everything this year. You keep knocking his legs bro but to me they are perfect.
Nasser definitely deserved to win the Olympia this year... and the following year as well because Ronnie had such a Crazy Gyno Tittie that he deserved to lose 1998. I love Bodybuilding but there's so much bias that it's absurd!
He wasnt robbed. Nassars back was his weakness, where as Yates back was his biggest strength, Yates was superior to him in this show. But Nassar is a legend though, if he had a better back he might of won a few Olympias.
My uncle works for the ifbb. he tells me that in order to win mr. o. you need to BLOW OUT the current raining mr. o. a slight better physique will not suffice. Nasser El Sonbaty was better in nearly every way on the stage that day. He should have won easily. He was the true Mr. Olympia that year. Same as when Jay Cutler got robbed by a weaker Coleman... even a few vs Arnold back in the day... the judges voted with the household name.

In order to be an 'outsider' who wins an olympia, you have to beat the champ who is on a running streak ( we know they like their streaks) by probably 105-110%. If you only beat the champ by a 5% they won't give it to you. It has to be VERY obvious, not just kinda obvious
It is a common practice to award the Mr. Olympia medal to the pregnant bodybuilder (Yates, Coleman, Phil).

How about You make a video which would present all the Mr O contests in history and the bodybuilders who should win those, without the politics (like Arnold 1980 or Ronnie 2001) I would really enjoy seeing how many of todays Mr Olympias didnt deserve their trophy, when it comes to true Bodybuilding. The funny thing is that how Yates looked at 97 was something new and everybody thought he didn't look good. Somehow that look became the norm for alot of competetors in Olympia afterwards =/

Wow acually going into the video it's very sad to see this. Sure it's a subjective sport but there isn't even subjective anymore. Dorian got objectivly outclassed!
...I mean Nasser was a known user of Synthol. So Lui was defending the guy on stage using Synthol. If I recall correctly Yates was recovering from a series of injuries and that was a predominant issues throughout his career; even the reason he was forced to retire. Dorian may not have come out strong in this Olympia, but you have to realize this isn't as much politics necessarily as Marketability. The ifbb builds dynasties for guys to win for a few consistent years and have them market supplements.
Dorian was one of the greatest of all time, but like so many others they saw real competition and really they probably had bias from the judges because the judges were making money off of that guy than the other competitors.
Nasser had oil in his delts and biceps in the '97 Olympia. His arms look squishy and you can see the injection bumps in his biceps and delts.
Apparently folks don't think judges can spot that from a mile away.
Nasser also never flexed his mid back and glutes in any of the back poses either. Poor execution takes away from his physique too.

I live in the uk, and was in Business with Dorian for a number of years. I was at that show and while i was a fan i know that Nasser was robbed. i said as much to Dorian and we never spoke after that.
Kevin Levrone should have won. He was absolutely perfect front to back. I still think Kevin looked his best at this Olympia. His back was better than ever and Nasser just didn't have the back to beat these guys. Kevin's legs were perfect size to match everything this year. You keep knocking his legs bro but to me they are perfect.
Nasser (rip) smoked Dorian completely. And he was robbed of the Sandow. That's a big shame!

Nasser definitely deserved to win the Olympia this year... and the following year as well because Ronnie had such a Crazy Gyno Tittie that he deserved to lose 1998. I love Bodybuilding but there's so much bias that it's absurd!
He wasnt robbed. Nassars back was his weakness, where as Yates back was his biggest strength, Yates was superior to him in this show. But Nassar is a legend though, if he had a better back he might of won a few Olympias.

My uncle works for the ifbb. he tells me that in order to win mr. o. you need to BLOW OUT the current raining mr. o. a slight better physique will not suffice. The ifbb like legacies and if the current mr. o is has been a mr. o for a while then they would much rather pick him against a guy they don't know that will bring the same package next year. Saluted!

Lui, you like to say what's right is right. Here, you are correct 100%, Dorian should have lost based on established BB metrics. I hope that you apply those same metrics in all your evaluations because recently you made me question your objectiveness during the Jay Cutler vs.Victor Martinez debacle.
Nasser El Sonbaty was better in nearly every way on the stage that day. He should have won easily. He was the true Mr. Olympia that year. Same as when Jay Cutler got robbed by a weaker Coleman... even a few vs Arnold back in the day... the judges voted with the household name.

Just like in boxing, the judging is what I hate most about a bodybuilding contest: the best physique does not always win...:-(
You can always make the argument that ALL of the multiple O winners, Arnold, Lee, Dorian etc. didn't deserve some of their victories. Dorian IMO should have never won post bicep tear. I thought Nasser should have won despite his lack of back thickness, he was the most aesthetic mass monster during that era.
