So nice to see a review on an APSC lens, especially on the a6400 which is my workhorse for sure. Looks like a win/win based on the price/performance. Surprised the in lens stabilization is even better than the Sony. Thanks!
You're welcome! I have another video coming out about it but yeah IMO this is THE lens For Sony APSC and if I still had an APSC camera I would keep it.

Or better than say the a6600 with Sony OSS-equipped lens (which I find great for pics...but not so much for video). Glad to have stumbled across and sub'd your channel today!
I would say it is better with a IBIS capable camera but how much is hard to say. I think it would be noticeable though. I think the difference between this lens and a sony lens with oss is going to be just about exactly the same on the same camera body though. Thanks for subscribing!

Between this and the 18-300 which would be the better pick? I’m mostly aiming to do portraits with my photography as I’m starting out, so I’d appreciate the wider aperture on this, but idk if I just want it to have it but the extra range sounds like it could be fun
I adore your videos, man. Also: thank you for remarking on the fact that the lens works so well in the cold and nasty. We never get enough kudos for our weatherproofing and build.
Very true! Tamron's lenses have put up with some serious abuse that I and Alaska have put them through including a few heavy rain, lots of snow, 22 below zero and more, if you are part of that team you deserve a LOT of kudos for doing a fantastic job!
The struggle is real with trying to speak out in the cold. I'm in northern Illinois so probably not nearly as bad as Alaska, but it is really challenging trying to get clear words out. Nice video!

Have been watching reviews like crazy and am obsessing over one of the three which I think have tossed out the Sony lens but hard to decide between the Tamron 17-70 and Sigma 18-50 as many reviews place them pretty close in picture quality. Looking for help. $250 price spread between the two
I really like the tamron and I haven't used the sigma so I can't comment of the difference but I will say I don't think you will be disappointed with either one
For someone who's budget is tight this will be my next lens. I'm rocking the Sony a6400 so that added stabilization will be a nice addition. Looking forward to all I can create this year.
Thank you for the review Jake - well done. I would grab this lense if I hadn't sold my a6000 and a6600 to buy my a7s3. I do love my Tamron's though - 17-28, 28-75 and most recently the 70-180. These are currently the only lenses I own.
Me too I have the 17-28 and 28-75 for my a7iii, I really like the tamron image quality and value for money, planning to get the 70-180 and also this 17-70 for my a6400 as B camera
The Tamron 17-70 mm is a nice lens, but may be longer, heavier, and is $150 more expensive than the zoom Sony apsc G lens of 18-135mm (also with image stabilization). The Sony lens is much better as a real zoom because it has almost twice the zoom range. As well, you can get deals on the sony lens-I believe I paid under $500 for it. Anyway, I've been using this lens for a year and really like it. Thanks for your review of the Tamron lens.
Jack, Thanks a lot for the great review. I have the A6400 + Sony 1655. I really wish it had the OSS. The price difference between Sony 1655 and Tamron 1770 in the US is crazy. Maybe it is because of the US-China tariffs. Just wondering if the Sony is $100 US more expensive than Tamron, would you still recommend Tamron over Sony? I bought my Sony 1655 for about $900 US in Canada (with all possible discounts I can find) in Nov. 2019. Thanks a lot.
Hey Paul I would still purely due to the extra reach and the image stabilization in the lens is fantastic! if you already have The Sony though I don't know that I would crossgrade. I have a video coming tomorrow that does a bit more of a deep dive in the image quality comparison.
Thank you! But what about the color difference in photos, esp. in skin tones? Sony looked pale and Tamron yellow... is it also your opinion? Imho only the new 7s/7c are good in skin tones... the Tamron is bringing back more soft and warm tone to the skin than the Sony G.... And another story to be told is the comparison to the Zeiss 4 16-70 with stabilisation, isn’t it?
It was really shocking to me to see that big of a difference. I have a video coming tomorrow that will do a bit more of a deep dive in the image quality of each but overall the Tamron def has a warmer color rendering and the sony is cooler
Now if Sony finally comes out with a proper high-end APS-C body that’s what I will get. Don’t care about full frame, but want USB-C, good water-resistance, 4K 60.
How does it compare to 18-104 f4 mm fron Sony? Im thinking that sigma 16 mm f.1.4 for low light + 18-104 f4 for zoom is still a bit better setup than only having Tamron 17-70 f 2.8. It will not give you the low light performance sigma gives. What is your take on this? new Tamron or Sigma 16 + Sony 18-104 as a starting setup?
The sigma will give slightly better low light performance but from my experience is a fair bit worse in it's distortion. It is however an excellent lens. I would still choose this over the 18-104 since I feel this lens is sharper and performs a bit better overall
@@JakeSloan Thanks for your answer. Of course comparing 18-104 directly to Tamron, Tamron wins quality wise I guess. But taking price point into conideration and that combo of SImga + 18-104 is still 25% cheaper than new Tamron. Hm not sure
Hi Jake. Your reviews are great and very helpful! I’m wondering if you have any thoughts on the Sigma 18-50 2.8 (for a6600) in comparison to these. Size and price is compelling vs Tamron but the extra reach and better weather sealing of the Tamron is certainly tough to ignore. Thank you.
I see you used it on your A7C throughout the review. How do you see it’s viability being used on a full frame having both types of bodies. Is this more worth it or having say the full frame 28-75 2.8 being used on APSC. I’m trying to determine keeping my 6600 and getting this lens or upgrading to the A7C so I would love to hear your thoughts.
I would not upgrade from the a6600 to the a7c personally. You have more controls on the a6600 and custom buttons. the only real difference is the flip out screen and full frame. everything else is the same. The OSS (tamron calls is VC vibration compensation) makes this lens a bit better than the 28-75 for APSC shooters for sure especially since you have IBIS as well
@@JakeSloan considering you have both, or at least a 6400 and A7C, That means a lot. Thank you sir. Going full frame to the A7C was more to simply my collection. Just not sure it’s worth it? I would either buy 2 more lenses for my 6600 or sell it and spend the money needed to go full frame and not really need to buy any more lenses.

Jake, don't you have the 18-105 for comparisson? It's not even fair with the G Lens, but would be good to see the difference between them. Anyway, I'm selling my 18-105 hahhahaa
@@JakeSloan I know I can achieve a similar effect with a 24-70 and then using crop mode when I want to go tighter but there's a noticeable delay when switching from crop to full frame on that camera and I end up downsizing my files to 24mp anyways for most uses.
2:55 god i LOVE TAMRON COLORSSSSS THEY FIX EVERYTHING ABOUT SONY CAMERAS In the worst kinda lighting conditions in the world overly bright snow land. The tamron warms up the look of the world and makes everything pleasant looking

Great review on the Tamron 17-70 for Sony APSC cameras! Liked the shot of the eagle! Not sure what you meant by focus breathing, is it the ease of where it slides in and out of focus? Thanks!
Thanks Mark! Focus breathing is where the focal length will change slightly as you change the focus. So as you go from near focus to infinity focus the lens may loose a few millimeters of width etc. Cheers!!
Good Morning! I purchased one but found it strange that her zoom ring is a little stiff. Did this happen to your copy too? From 24mm onwards, it has a greater resistance when turning that even to use it on the gimbal is more difficult because turning the zoom ring forces the motor
@@JakeSloan Hi, Mr. Jake, it’s me again. I just placed an order for this lens with your link. Looks like your review has helped me out most by far. You are incredible. Thank you for your tedious work and for your continued efforts to give us free wisdom and incredible views of Alaska. Hope you get something from my purchase. Take care.
Nice vid thanks! I have the A6400 & I've just ordered this lens as an upgrade from my Sony 18-105 f/4 lens which isn't that great in low light. Looking forward to using this! Are you still happy with this lens in 2022?
I beg to disagree with the Tamron only being 1 mm less wide. The Sony 1655 is already visibly wider than the Sigma 16mm/F1.4, and also you can see this with the Tamron. The Sony is more closer to a 15 mm wide angle lens, especially when you shoot raw file in Capture 1 and go beyond the default crop area. When you do landscape or travel shots in cities, you sometimes just need it a bit wider. Furthermore, in your sample shots it is visible that the Tamron at 17mm f2.8 has rather soft edges, whereas the Sony is crisp sharp wide open. At what aperture & @17 mm does the Tamron become sharp at the edges in your experience?
I have the a6400, and this lens is just what I’m looking for ... cheers 👍✌️

@@JakeSloan I know I can achieve a similar effect with a 24-70 and then using crop mode when I want to go tighter but there's a noticeable delay when switching from crop to full frame on that camera and I end up downsizing my files to 24mp anyways for most uses.
2:55 god i LOVE TAMRON COLORSSSSS THEY FIX EVERYTHING ABOUT SONY CAMERAS
In the worst kinda lighting conditions in the world overly bright snow land. The tamron warms up the look of the world and makes everything pleasant looking
Tamron is putting out some FANTASTIC lenses for sony
great review. I am doubting between the Tamron 17-70, sony 16-55 or 24-70 f4.
If you are an APSC shooter then definitely consider the 17-70, great all around lens but if you need the highest image quality then the 16-55 still cannot be beat.
Hey Jake, thanks for such an amazing video about this Tamron - I have a quick question - I own a Sony A7S III... On trying this lens I got very heavy vignetting... does that mean this is not the lens for me?
That’s correct this lens is for crop (APSC) sensor cameras
@@JakeSloan So I guess this is not for the A7S III? Which is the closest to this for full frame that you could suggest? Thx
I love prime lenses f1.4 GM, but for my a6700 is tamron 17-70/2.8 perfect choice for travel.
agreed
Awesome review! I'll definitely recommend to my friend who shoots on APSC. As an FF shooter, I just want to borrow it 😂!
LOL that sounds perfect
a 100% buy if it's not that i've moved on from apsc system
agreed!!
is this compatible for Sony A7III?
it is but you would be better off getting the 28-200 or 28-75 for the A7III to use it's full resolution in photos
Yub APSC stands for Alpha Professional - Significant Compact
ok
Thanks for sharing sample images you shot......
It would be great if you also provide some small video samples in log profiles....
Would be really helpful for us and your help will be highly appreciated...... ✌
next time maybe
It seems "soft at 70mm" is a common complaint among those who have had a chance to use the lens.
yes but when I say soft I mean only very slightly soft. It's still a fantastic performer overall, stay tuned for my 16-55 and 17-70 comparison coming soon
Excellent review & video... Can you recommend something for sports shooting under floodlights using a A6500?
This lens would be great for that since it has stabilization built in and good low light performance. Another option but it will do less well in low light is the 18-105 with OSS from sony
@@JakeSloan I have the F4 18-105, havnt had the chance to try it under floodlit conditions, i was thinking of having a crack with the Tamron 70-180 F2.8 once its safe to head back into stadiums
Will it be available for other systems and if yes to which?
I don't know if it will be available for any other systems at the moment
Whats your recommendation for sony a6000 and this lens
that would be a great combo
Another review that confirms it's soft at 70 :(.
soft being not as sharp as 17 or 24 or 35 but it's still very good at 70...
Jake, I got my lens because of this review and i made sure to hit your B&H link! Wondering if you have suggestions for classes/courses to take on the sony a6400 and the use of this lens? I am totally new to all of this!
Thank you! are you looking for general use of cameras and lenses or this combo specifically?
@@JakeSloan specifically sony a6400 would be great.
@jakesloan would this be a good lens for my first lens for the a6400 as I am new to photography and getting the a6400. Would this be good for fast action shots?
This would be a nearly perfect lens for that!
@@JakeSloan thank you very much
Another vid of yours that felt so...refreshing ❄! I enjoy seeing Alaska through your eyes. Great review, this seems to be a fantastic lens
well it was refreshing lol thanks a lot
use a7c + 17 70 in movie recording , image quality down , but is it acceptable , idol ? Thanks
you still get full 4k since the a7c uses a higher resolution sensor and downsamples a 6k image. So no quality loss
@@JakeSloan best solution but must have lots of memory cards right . Let's me see , thank so much idol . Hope u have another review about a7c + 17 70..hihi
Nice Jake! Liking the stabilization on it! Thats pretty awesome!
Thanks Kardoso!!
How come you took shots using the a7c as well?
Because it was the camera I had with me at the time.
Have you been testing the macro feature in the lens?
not yet but stay tuned
I guess your insurance doesn't pay for a cracked windshield?
lol I only replace mine about every 2 years as they get chipped and cracked pretty rapidly up here
Thanks a lot man.. it’s inspiring that u put up so much work
THank you
I wanna get one for my A6600… can you post a link to it maybe for B&H or Amazon
it is linked in the description but here you go: geni.us/gCsgJJQ
@@JakeSloan thanks!!!
I love your videos!! So helpful!! Thanks
thank you very much!
Great review! Is that the lens cap that comes with the lens? If not where did you buy that lens cap? Thanks!
Thank you! The lens can is the defender from polar pro.
@@JakeSloan Appreciate it!
Great video!
Im gonna buy this one!
Thanks!
Tamron 17-70 or sigma trio for video?
17-70 because of the stabilization
240+ thumbs up, 0 down? Wow!
yeah I am shocked, I almost always make someone thumbs down within the first 30seconds of a video going live
Big thumbs up for shooting this video in the real world with windchill! Great review.
Thanks a lot Joel
Wait, degrees in Fahrenheit it Celsius? Both are probable in Alaska
I was speaking in Fahrenheit. But yes both are!
@@JakeSloan Yeah, that's really cold. You didn't have that much clothing on in some shots for being that cold, you have to be pretty adjusted to the cold
Thank you sir. You have convinced me to get this lens and sony body. 😊
Good choice!
for real state 17-70 or 10-18 sony ?
10-18 for sure
As soon as it's available for under 800 bucks I'll get this thing.
It’s shipping now but the price is right at 799.99 sooooooo technically under 800.00 lol.
@@JakeSloan in the US. In Germany it’s 850 in most places. Amazon sells it for over 1000.
Thanks for the video Jake, btw your set looks great.
Thank you very much!
Jake, thanks for this very fun review! Here’s my question I’m surprised no one else asked this yet! What’s that AWESOME Lens Cap you’re sporting on the Tamron??
LOL thats the defender from polar pro
@@JakeSloan Cheers! Buying it NOW
nice 👍
is the vc decent enough compared oss
it is fantastic when compared to oss, they perform very similarly
Sweet. My favorite lens is the Sigma 16mm f1.4 on my 6500.
Nice I love that lens too!!
Wonderfull lens but very very wide wiev. Especially not good street photography
Thank you for the great review!
You’re welcome.
Hello, the lense #good for a6000
very good!
Cheers!!
@@JakeSloan Ah, that's makes sense...yes I have seen that happen. Glad your trip was successful!
Thanks for the coffee fund!! We drank some up there and it was fantastic hot coffee in a COLD place with a great view
Love your videos Jake especially because of where you live lol woohoo
Thank you!
Have you compared vs. Sony zeiss 1670/4?
I don't have access to that lens unfortunately but this will perform better in low light and give a shallower depth of field
Zeiss is 7 y old so i guess thats right. With a small camera i want a pretty small lens to match Witherspoon. I think these zooms are tog big
To match with
Good Morning! I purchased one but found it strange that her zoom ring is a little stiff. Did this happen to your copy too? From 24mm onwards, it has a greater resistance when turning that even to use it on the gimbal is more difficult because turning the zoom ring forces the motor
Interesting. I have not found that to be true with my copy
Immediate thumbs up for Jake :)
Thank you so much!
Take care.
Appreciate the tutorial, great work 👏
You’re welcome
You sound so cold. Thanks for the video.
I was cold lol
How does it go with low light?
fantastic did you see the star and aurora photos and time lapses I did with it?
Nice vid thanks! I have the A6400 & I've just ordered this lens as an upgrade from my Sony 18-105 f/4 lens which isn't that great in low light. Looking forward to using this! Are you still happy with this lens in 2022?
Yes I am
What kind of corrections profile you were using? Thanks in advance! Because there is not yet an 17-70mm profile
I was using the in camera correction profile but that was all.
I’m a beginner and just bought the a6000 for my trip to Arizona. Do you recommend this lens for capturing large landscapes or Sigma 16mm f/1.4?
I would get this lens for an all in one and all around lens for sure
I think you would be happiest with the Sony, it does have the edge when it comes to absolute image quality in all settings
Can u plz do the comparison between 17-70 tamron va Sony 18-105 plz
I would like to but I don't have access to the Sony 18-105
