Awesome inspiration ♥️. I'm a 53 year old nurse, and have been lifting for 8 years. When I started, I never expected this to have such a deep and lasting impact on my life! I thought I was just going to accept the 4 free training sessions I got when I joined the gym, and then be done with them. I never expected to be using actual barbells and lifting serious weight!!! I also struggled through recovering from surgery in 2019 and covid in 2021, and the fact that I had been so strong before those things helped me recover better from both. Nursing is REALLY hard on our bodies, and aging is hard on them, but lifting really helps us build strength and keep going. My nemesis is my squat (darn you, long femurs!), and my favorite is the deadlift. I hope many people see your video and take your words to heart: "just start and trust!"
Don't worry about any particular lift, enjoy the journey of progress, stay in safe technique, and reap the benefits of resistance training. 👍👍 By the way, squat is also my weakest lift due to very long femurs. I can row more than squat 😁😁😁😁
@@joeypeterson3818 I've been there! Trust me haha. It took me about 2/3 years to convince one of them to leave the hydrogymnastics classes and join the gym. Strength training is really a medicine for human body and it's importance rises as we age further. It can really keep the doctors away better than an apple a day.
There's a hidden gem in this video for all the PTs out there (like me). People who have hip replacements (THA) must, at some point, start to squat. For those PTs that are serious about rehab for hip replacements- start squatting early. Start bottom up- proper leg and feet position (as if they were squatting from standing), and standing from chairs, bench, etc. IMO, failure to do so can lead to debilitating consequences after a THA.
we need a huge cultural shift. You have to physically work HARDER as you get older in order to maintain muscle and bone etc. not take it easy and put your feet up.
Congratulations Alexanne! Great job - way to work at building your strength to increase your quality of life and inspire the rest of us along the way. :)
Another example of the unique benefits of weight training. She started out as a typical, old woman. Now she is more man than most men. The capacity for human adaptation until the day you die, is a "miracle" most people never know. Weight training is essential to fight the degradation of the body that Marcus Arelius noted when he said aging turns us into bags of shit. Drop the aerobic nonsense, and pump iron. One impediment exists, however. It requires character, like no other exercise.
As a man in his 30s yeah, that's true, strength training doesn't impact my life very much, actually there are times when I have some nagging gym injury and feel rather diminished compared to baseline. Of course I'm stronger when I have to pick up heavy stuff, but that's a rare occurrence. Recently handled a big AC unit by myself, including going down some stairs, got into full lifting mindset with the valsalva maneuver etc. But yeah that's a once a year event.
Some of the comments on here, good grief. We need to do a follow up Alex’s progress. She’s repping out what she’s shown doing for singles here. Active and kicking butt, injury free. Some of these comments need to be read on “Comments From the Haters”
I like her. However she made the Starting Strength coaches sound understanding and as if they have love? Is Rip giving the entire organization a bad name?
In the olden days of SS back in the early 2010s, you could really see his enthusiasm and energy. He just got tired of dogmatic contrarians and trolls and others who strawmanned him and his organization, and I think that that's made him have more austerity as a whole over time.

Alexanne you're going to have to get to at least 250 if you want to maximise your leverages (really 290 but I don't want to scare you).
