When I started as a trainer over a decade ago, the consensus was that weight training and diet could slow the progress of osteoporosis, but not reverse it. It was only a bit after that we learned that was wrong, and it could be reversed. Not all trainers and doctors have caught up, so this woman's privileged to be at WFAC with Carmen, and I hope she spreads the word. Her life has been changed, and saved, by the work of her trainer and herself.
Thank you for uploading more succes stories! I've been showing these videos to clients to make them understand that strength really helps with almost every aspect of your life.
I love it!!!! Maybe you have educated your doctor. My cardiologist never ever mentioned nutrition and exercise in our very short discussion when I saw him for heart palpitations, was nothing. He cringed when I did which is why it was a short talk. Thank you for putting it out there and your trainer is amazing, you are blessed.
It breaks my heart that a physician wouldn’t be ecstatic over a patient’s recovery from a condition. Especially when some doctors I’ve come across believe in “as little of invasive” procedure as possible to help people get over something. Congratulations on all your success and taking control of your life!
In my experience, being very smart does not necessarily save you from different kinds perceptual and emotional biases. Many of these biases are built right into the human psyche. In this case, it appears the doctor simply did not want to admit she was wrong, a sin of pride if you will. Sad thing is the doctor may have other patients that would benefit from weight exercise but she may simply direct them to the dubious bone drugs instead.
Well done! This is brilliant. So, pleased you have improved. I my self have started this sort of training 2 months sho. I still have a long way to go. But,im loving it!. I have a very good trainer in the gym. I go twice a week. My trainer is on this journey with me. I hope to go for a Rems test in 6 months time. To see improvement. Thank you for sharing this with everyone. We can only learn and help ourselves by this information. Thank you.
Awesome ! Truly love these stories. And I'm not surprised the doctor did not acknowledge the extreme benefits of resistance training to slow down and in some cases, reverse osteopenia. It's happened before . There's just not many known public cases .
At the risk of sounding indelicate, may i ask how old is she and when was she diagnosed with osteoporosis? I have a similar problem and i'd like to start squatting and deadlifting. Thank you!
This is some unpaid real stuff, I can’t believe I will see this in today’s time. Trustworthy ness is gone from the planet earth. Thanks RIP love from Pakistan 🇵🇰 I started lifting in 2017 when I lived in Jersey and since than it made me stronger and more independent. Through out the process of learning I had to sideline all the stupid friends around me. I left US in the biological war aka pandemic. After spending 25 years. Situation in Pakistan is worse but I will survive. I don’t know how to contact rip for his Q@A session.
Great video. Thanks for sharing that. Getting stronger is so clearly the way to better health. It is just great to hear simple and thoughtful messages about how to do things and then people explaining how they benefited. Just overall, the book and the videos and the web-site are so inspirational. Genuine thanks, admiration and respect from me and I suspect many, many people around the planet. What I do find confusing, and something I am struggling with, is all these messages from the haters (not against this post I would add - so as not to offend any people commenting already on this). What on earth is going on? Overall, you seem to have become locked into an on-going public dialogue between Rip (hope he doesn’t mind me using the diminutive) and the haters where he is characterised as some sort of ultra right-wing bad person. Yet when I listen to what he says all I really get is a series of messages showing what a decent, thoughtful, respectful and intelligent person he is - which is reflected in the business you have built. Sure, you obviously believe in independence - well good for you. I mean - look at this video. It’s a tribute to the people working at Starting Strength and the great leadership that has created such a fine business. Back to the haters and amusing though it is to listen to your dialogue with them, my thoughts are that the world has moved on. We live in a post truth world and quite suddenly comments and behaviours can be deliberately taken out of context and used to attack individuals and companies. Haters just don’t get subtilty - as you say, they are stupid. But not that stupid - it is easy to imagine a person with ulterior motives seizing things out of context. I don’t suppose you are likely to back-off from your opinions, so I won’t waste my breath suggesting you tone it down - but just don’t assume the world at large gets the irony of your dialectic. I urge you to place more emphasis on showing the real side of what you do - just like this excellent video. After each SSR “messages from the haters”, why not quickly refer to your latest video where the contra view is demonstrated? Just a suggestion to get your messages across stronger.
My bones are really, really bad...I'm 62, supposedly my spine is in the "80+ years old" range, 45% or so bone loss. I've definitely been babying my back--did some damage before I realized my bones were bad, then did some more trying to get stronger--so my core is weak, and with three inches of height loss, everything is just...different. But I'm not new to weight training--nothing as focused as this, and lots of me is actually fairly strong. I'm just scared of getting hurt. Even attempting to have "neutral posture" is now painful and feels baddd. I want to get better, am willing to put on the work with guidance. The Starting Strength people here say they can help me, but I wonder, is anyone out there as bad as I am, and did this program bring improvement to t-scores/pain levels/posture?
dump that quack, ASAP. if they cant be trusted to help you, move along. this happened to me many years ago, given boniva and ignorantly took it. researched and found strontium would be a better supplement and strength training would help. went back to dr and his only response was '"you know more than me". never went back!
I'm 60 began working starting strength 2 yrs ago. Amazing results. My wife is 57. She doesn't want to end up like her frail mother in the nursing home and knows she needs to challenge her body. But won't. I started pushing this in the beginning and her son jumped in. Still refuses. She's got horrible posture and is developing her mother's hump in her back. Showed her this video and still nothing. I have no idea how to motivate her.
We can only control ourselves and inspire others. Let her be. More she’s pushed more she’ll resist. Do it for yourself same with your son. When she brings her mom just calmly say ‘I know it scares you and really don’t want that either. How can I/we help you?’ If she says an idea good. If nothing/not sure just tell her you love her and you/son are there for her and leave it be and after that when it comes up just say you’re there for her. Her body her choice. She has to want to. Hard I know. Maybe in time with space she’ll come around. ✌️
How does a woman this young get diagnosed with osteoporosis? Her before photo shows her extremely thin, as if by an eating disorder. It's not hard to believe a woman her age would regain the bone mass she should have by weight training and proper diet. Lack of nutrients results in bone loss. I don't want to spoil the party and I believe weight training for all women is crucial for maintaining bone health, but let's not pretend this is a typical osteoporosis case. That said, still an amazing story. It's also horribly disappointing but not shocking her doctor wasn't supportive and even dismissive of her results. My mother was just diagnosed (73 y/o) and no mention of weight training...just take a pill (that erodes the jaw).
Julia should fire her doctor. The doc apparently lacks one of the most important qualities of a physician: academic curiosity. Nothing I despise more than "this is how we do it because this is the way we've always done it." I fired my previous doc for the same reason, though for a different condition.
Very inspiring, well done and congratulations

Carmen- I have watched this about... ten times. I just sent it to three of my clients. EXCELLENT!
Wow... this is one of the best things I've ever seen. Big Up Starting Strength, Carmen and the magnificent Julia 👑
This is a fabulous story and case study. Congrats to Carmen for being a great coach. And to you Julia for putting in the work.
Thank you for uploading more succes stories!

This woman’s enthusiasm is great. I love her excitement about her weightlifting program and not having to rely on medication. Great work Carmen
Carmen is a fantastic coach. Rip has an awesome gym. Julia has worked so hard for this! Great story all the way around!

Hey RIP! make more cooking videos. Or did floral heights only serve 9 items? Really love those videos.
This is such a fantastic testimony on how this training can change not only skeletal tissue, but the skeleton too! Nice job!

More stories like this. Stuff like this is what get us motivated.
Excellent. Excellent. Excellent. Way to go Trainee and Coach!
She looks so happy and glowing - they both do :) - fantastic story and keep on going!
You are truly inspiring! So awesome.
Wonderful story.
What she has achieved with weights is more important than anything thats ever happened in Elite Powerlifting
I’ve recovered from post concussion syndrome and a stroke because of starting strength.
Amazing results! 🎉keep it up.
Great job stay awesome.
Impressive. Well done
Awesome video. Curious how the nutrition changed over time.

Rip needs to get her on TRT
Lol
800 mg a week minimum
@@spaceghost0813 how else will she keep adding weight each workout?
Bravo!!!!
Eating protein will help a great deal, your bones are mostly made of collagen not calcium or anything else.
I’ve read a lot of reports and studies and stay up to date and yes but more complex then that dependent on age, medications, medical issues etc.
you need a different doctor

All doctors should go through the novice LP before graduating Med School.

Why? If you don’t trust your MD you need to find a new one. Good MDs will agree.
Perhaps a new Doctor....
Get a different doctor. It's so hard to get a good doctor and far too many are wrapped around medication.
omg so woke here it hurts. wheres mark?????? omg..
